"Joe, you'd be up into mischief in no time. Truth is, you wouldn't be able to change any more than me." - Marlo, S5E4 Marlo has more money than he'll ever be able to spend, and he has the connections that would forever keep him rich. He has what everyone else wants....and it means nothing to him. He can't change. Almost nobody on the street knows who he is. Omar's dead, but everyone on the street knows who he is. As Marlo once said, the ones who got to wear the crown are dead, "but the point is they wore it". The one thing that matters to Marlo, the only thing he has ever wanted, is for his name to ring out. And it's the one thing he will never have. There is no possible outcome worse than this for Marlo. He will be forever obsessed with the one thing he will never have. "My Name is My Name". And nobody cares about it anymore. He's in hell. A very special hell designed specifically for him.

Travis H

Can’t wait to watch! Because of the final shot with Duquan I now get sad whenever I see horses, so that’s fun for me!🤣

8bitAndy

Don't think I can do a full re-watch of Breaking Bad tbh, but at least this will clear the way for a Better Call Saul watch along in the future. *Prays to Cinebesus that it will happen

Jeff K

“My name is my name” is also just excellent subtle writing because it’s a callback to the end of season two, and encapsulates the difference between the Greeks and Marlo. At the end when the walls are closing in, Spiros says to the Greek, “All they have is my name. And my name is not my name.” And he remains free and doing business as usual. Marlo is too volatile and full of pride, on the other hand.

You should absolutely put Doom Patrol on your TV list.

Stu84

It was great to rewatch the whole show with you guys.

Jeff K

So just one quick clarification from the wrap up discussion: Mike probably COULD have gone to Cutty, but if you'll recall, he chose not to because he thought he was "too friendly." So he decided to go to Chris instead. Imagine how different things would have shaken out if he hadn't been so suspicious of Cutty?

fallingupdownthere

You should try and fit in We Own This City. It's a 5 episode mini series on HBO. Same writers, much of the same cast. It's based on the Gun Trace Task Force in Baltimore.

Jeff K

So, George and Simone: now that you've finished The Wire... do you feel like it lived up to the hype? Came up short? Surpassed your expectations? Very curious. Also, that scene in NA with Bubbles just really hammers home how freaking good Andre Royo was, and what a crime it is that he never got so much as a nomination for his performance. I genuinely believe it's one of the greatest performances in TV history.

Jay

I'm gonna miss Wire Tuesdays:( If you ever want to go back to David Simon and B-more, I'll also recommend The Corner. He spent a year with a family living in Monroe and Fayette and wrote a book about it, which eventually became The Corner. It's a true story, only 6 episodes and you get to see the likes of Lester, Norman and Marla Daniels playing drug addicts, on top of countless other Wire cameos. If The Corner hadn't been a big success (unlike The Wire, it actually won an emmy, for best mini series), we probably wouldn't have The Wire:)

PIG

I’ll miss this too. A lot.

Jeff K

I'm glad you mentioned "the fuck scene." I had never really thought about it, but the thing that was the key to starting the dominoes falling (or one of the keys, anyway) in season one was Jimmy and Bunk finding the bullet inside the fridge door. And here, at the end, what brings down Marlo's crew... is something they find hidden inside a fridge door. With this writing staff and David Simon at the helm, I cannot imagine that's coincidence, even though I'd never really thought about it before.

TibrisG

If there ever is a time you want to slip back into the worlds of David Simon shows, with that good ol’ The Wire feel, I would suggest doing a future Poll with just his shows. Treme Generation Kill We Own This City Show Me A Hero The Plot Against America The Deuce The Corner

Jeff K

Treme has one of the absolute best theme songs in TV history. Great cast, too.

The first time I watched this season, I'd just bought it on DVD that day, the first week of it being for sale on DVD, and I had the intention of only watching one episode per day to savour the final season of my favourite show with my favourite characters. Around 11pm I decided to watch one episode before going to bed... 10 or so hours later I was finishing the last episode, a huge smile on my face, having done an all-nighter. The happy conclusion of Bubble's story, Jimmy's wake, Slim Charles taking out Cheese, the last montage of Baltimore. Grinning from ear to ear. Thanks for giving me another excuse to watch this fantastic TV series all over again with you.

Shonnicus

Alright my Mt. Rushmore of characters. I'm cheating by doing a "good guys" and "bad guys". 1. Lester Freamon. The brains of the show. My overall favorite character who was the guy in the corner who seemed to be one of the humps just crafting his wood carvings. Found out with his intelligence and due diligence he was Natural Poleece. 2. Reginald “Bubbles” Cousins. The heart of the show. A person who persevered and in the end turned himself around. Actor, Andre Royo probably the most deserving of some award even though so many great actors. 3, Howard "Bunny" Colvin. The man who legalized drugs. Snuck in season 3 but was the driving force in season 4. A man who was tired of the same old policing and decided to legalize drugs. He was morally an upstanding man, but did all his intentions were the best? 4. William “Bunk” Moreland. I just loved The Bunk. A great character who was Natural Police but sometimes went to the dark side with McNulty. While a minor character he just shined when he was on tv.

JP

I accidently cut the Wire folks, we will get a repairmen in stat. Idk had no creative comment so this is what I have lol

MacGuffinStuff

Oh shit, Breaking Bad? For some reason I assumed you guys had already seen it, this is gonna be awesome. The Wire is a truly great show, honest and real, but Breaking Bad is transcendent, that's not even an exaggeration.

Parabolica

I know you already have TL lined up as your mini-break but if you’re looking for another between season of BB, Generation Kill is only 7-8 episodes long and produced by David Simon. Follows a group of recon marines going into Iraq in 2002 and is awesome. You might spot a face from the wire in there too ;)

Shonnicus

"Bad Guys" Mt. Rushmore. 1, Omar Little, The backbone of the show. The character who let viewers get on the streets and be in that grey area of good and bad. The quintessential street smarts character "A man must have a code". 2. 3. Frank Sobotka. The character who I believe was introduced to give the mostly white viewers a person they can see as the "good guy" trying to save his union dock workers by committing crime. Good and bad, Frank was a force. Actor Chris Bauer carried Season 2. 3. Russell “Stringer” Bell. I'm not the biggest fan but I give credit to how well the character was written. A street drug dealer who believe there was a better way to deal drugs. In the end he too was betrayed by the game. The Game is the Game. 4. Prop Joe. The CEO. The man who could have been anything I wrote about what he could have been if set on a different path. A minor character which sets him back but I give him the respect I give Lester Freamon.

Shonnicus

Yes. That is the whole show pretty much. Now for me I'm not the "pull yourself up by the boot straps person" I am more of the where is your Spawn Point and sometimes the choices you make or not make decides your future. Especially the more obstacles you face.

DeAndrew Greene

I love the compromise in Levy's office because even tho Marlo is positioned as the big bad of the season it shows that he's just another cog in the overall corrupt system that everyone plays a part in. The masterfulness off the wire is that it showed that there's corruption in every institution if you look beneath the surface.

Richard Copping

Thank you. It was truly a delight rewatching The Wire with you guys.

The Maestro

where's the tv show poll?

Jeff I.

They already did it a couple weeks ago. The first season of Ted Lasso won, and then they'll start Breaking Bad after that.

Jay

I wouldn't mind a eulogy from Jay Landsman. Remember Prop Joe talking about his grandad being the first black man to own a house in the neighbourhood, and how proud he was? Here we get Cheese's final betrayal, putting the house up as bail. I'm glad Slim was the one who put an end to him. Also glad Kima got to leave on a positive note with Jimmy and Lester, that Jimmy confronted Scott (at least we saw him squirm a bit). And only a psychopath could begrudge Bubs walking up those steps. This show couldn't have a happy ending, it would have flown in the face of everything that went before it. But that doesn't mean we can't have a few satisfying moments:)

Mitchell Bowker

Amazing show! I was glad to be able to watch it again with Cinebinge! Also, not sure if you have gotten there yet, but Season 1 of Breaking Bad is only 7 episodes, so if you feel like going straight into Season 2 after you finish Season 1 that will be understandable.

rkhc

Deadwood is WAAYY more serious than Breaking Bad, by the way.

AmaruKur

hey I really loved yalls reaction to this series and really enjoy watchin yall but i just dont see a whole bunch of reactions to movies i enjoy. no disrespect but i think it would be dope if yall added some more color to what yall watch. I cant speak for all black folk but i like watchin things with more black folk in it an yall dont got much of that. Yall have the wire, friday and training day if you want to count that. thats no disrespect an i love watchin yall but i was jus hopin yall could get some color in yalls lineup. maybe if one of every 10 or something like that was black folk movies. Crooklyn, clockers, Mo better blues, malcolm X, juice, judas and the black messiah, queen and slim. please dont take it like im not enjoying yall cause i am or that im tellin yall what to do cause im not, im just hoping me sayin sum could help. anyway, thanks for ya time.

Charlotte Drolet

Marlo is like Avon was. He is a soldier thru and thru. I think the scene clearly shows that he enjoyed it. Part of his pride is being that soldier. That is why he got so mad when he found out what Omar was saying on the streets. His crown is his name ringing in the streets. He didn't care about the money or the drugs it was more of a means to an end. Remember when Avon and Stringer talked about how they started out in season three? Stringer wants the store and Avon wants the Ak. Same as how Avon didn't care what the war with Marlo was going to do to his drug business. He wanted his name to ring. Just like Marlo. They were true soldiers.

Loved watching The Wire with you two, i consider it the best tv show of all time (but LOST is my favorite). Anytime I rewatch this show I struggle with Bubbles (who is my favorite character), rewatching him go through everything he goes through (especially at the slower pace) is hard to watch and I was thankful that I could always jump ahead and watch him walking up those stairs. Some Wire related movie recommendations if you are interested: Spotlight, and Shattered Glass are great movies about reporters. The main character of Shattered Glass was an inspiration for Templeton and was mentioned in the show. Also “Gone Baby Gone” stars both Amy Ryan (who almost won an Oscar) and Michael Kenneth Williams in a smaller role.

Khan1001

Really enjoyed watching The Wire again with you guys, its probably the best written show ever & most realistic, right down to the finale itself, bittersweet but very true, it shows how everything repeats itself with the next generation of people until the system changes which it wont of course. I strongly recommend you watch this youtuber and this video, https://youtu.be/tlYDCuJ-c8s he does a great breakdown and analysis of why the show is so good, he also has a bunch of videos on The Wire, well worth watching. Look forward to watching Breaking Bad with you, A lot of people have that as the greatest show of all time and I cant really argue but The Wire would be right up there as well.

Jeff K

And on the note about Templeton, since you also mentioned Spotlight: the actor who played Scott wrote the screenplay (and won the Oscar) for Spotlight.

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

TV reactions I'd love to see at some point in the future. The End of the Fucking World, Wednesday

Scott Elsasser

i would absolutely love to see you guys watch Justified.

Boyan Konov

I hope you add the wire to the recap videos or make a separate video about all the thoughts you had about the series. feel like the last 15 min wasn't enough.

dys

Thing about Daniels being fine on a lawyer's salary, it seems like he became a junior Assistant District Attorney which doesn't pay all that well, probably far less than he would've made as police commissioner.

Avon Barksdale

Have you watched "The Wire: Prequel" shorts? It would be a great way to end this series - Avon

John Richards

Daniels is seated at the defense table beside a defendant. He went to private practice.

ThePVO

Really enjoyed watching you guys watch this. Was the third time I've watched the series all the way through. it remains the most comprehensive portrayal of modern society and it's achievements and failures. Sadly, in the nearly 20 years since it aired, I can't think of a single aspect of life that has improved from a sociological standpoint.

Śéáń

I've put off watching this for a week now because I don't want the show to end. I'll catch it at some point this week, but just want to say thanks guys, for giving me an excuse to revisit the series. Genuinely a highlight of the week to carve out time for it every Tuesday.

Michael Handy

Marlo just wanted to taste the streets again.

Running red

I liked it. Marlo lost. Everybody know Avon and Omar. No one knows him and he can’t be in the streets anymore. The game is the game yo

Adam

The way I always like to describe The Wire is "deliberate". They weren't writing it to get approved for another season, they were writing it to convey a message, through some of the greatest characters ever written.

Ribking

I made it to the end again! Thanks for watching with me. Really enjoyed hearing your takes on things. Did you two ever find and watch the 3 Prequels? Pretty sure I remember you mentioning them....

Jpsynergy

Finally finished this up and loved it despite seeing it many times before. My favorite show for sure. Just holds a special place in my heart.

Angela D. Mitchell

I think it's a decent ending to a solid season (not the best, but solid). I do think this season was a great cap to the show because all of the themes intertwined and they all asked the question of what people were willing to do -- for ambition, for justice, for gain. Omar was safe and living a fantasy paradise. He didn't have to go back. Marlo has $10 million here and still can't leave the streets. At least we get to see Jimmy, Lester, Daniels, Ronnie, Kima, and Bunk go off and do what they love to do. Meanwhile, honestly, if I were Beadie (who is a saint), I would never touch McNulty again unless he had visibly bathed in Purell and then covered himself in a body condom for a month. Just thinking about standing in an elevator with him would make me gag. So happy for Bubbles's happy ending, and Herc can burn in the fires of a thousand suns for what he did to poor Randy and Bubbles and those they love. Ugh. I definitely think the ending is foreshadowing Marlo's downfall. Unlike Stringer, he didn't really want out. The only times we saw him lose it, were when he felt his "name" and rep were disrespected. He can't handle fading away. He'd rather die with a crown. Amazing show, and thanks for the rewatch!
