A Red Mage Named Blue

A great horror movie is a film called Host, available on Shudder. It was rated as the scariest horror film ever.

Emptysea93

Next time you both are in a horror mood, I highly recommend some elevated horror films like "It Follows", "The Babadook", "Get Out", "Us", "Nope", "The Lighthouse" or even "Midsommar." Popcorn horror movies like "Paranormal Activity" are fun, but some of the best and most terrifying horror movies are the more elevated horror films, and I think they make better reactions too.

I've been waiting for Midsommar! A couple of really underrated horrors are The Empty Man (2020) and Session 9. Both have smaller budgets but are really good.

The intro has the poster for paranormal activity 4, FYI.

The single horror movie that scared me the most upon first viewing. I was a little paranoid crossing the parking lot at night after the film. And my sleep wasn’t right for two weeks. I don’t know—there’s something about unknown entities effing with you in your sleep that pushes a button for me. It’s totally dirty pool to mess with folks when they’re that defenseless.

Nick Scholz

I would also recommend Unfriended. Similar to found footage type horror but with the twist of being all shot via a laptop.

If you're interested in more found footage horror, [REC] and Lake Mungo are the two best. Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum is pretty popular, too. A lighter, more fun one is One Cut Of The Dead, which is easily one of the best films this century.

Lake Mungo is a gem that seems to be getting more love in recent years. And REC is the greatest found footage movie ever made IMHO.

I remember watching a different cut of this film when it just came out. This version is the canon ending, since it does tie in with the sequel, but personally, I liked the "original" ending more, since it was less hammy with the demon-face towards the camera and more grounded in... well... realism might not be the right word. SPOILER FOR THAT CUT: It plays out more or less the same, but Micah is not flung towards the camera. Instead, Katie walks back into the bedroom with a knife in her hand and blood on her shirt. She then does the demon swaying until morning (I think she sits down though), after which you hear a woman enter - can't remember who - she calls out and starts screaming, having presumably found Micah's dead body downstairs. Then more time passes and you hear police officers enter the house and calling out. As they come upstairs, Katie seems to snap out of her possession and starts walking quickly towards them - still holding the knife. The officers do the police thing and she is killed. The end

In the found footage genre I would also recommend The Poughkeepsie Tapes.

I despise this movie. It's like watching paint dry. Can't wait to see your reaction!

Great ghosty film you have to see is "Poltergeist"(1982), written and produced by Spielberg

Ryne Mclane

Thanks for explaining that, I thought maybe I was remembering a sequel or different movie bc I swore cops killed her

Odd Thomas

Blair Witch wasn't the first found footage horror but definitely the first to hit the zeitgeist and do decent box office; mostly down to clever marketing claiming it was a true story. I saw it in 1999 and it was a unique experience but not sure how it would hold up today

djKENTO

yeah I believe Cannibal Holocaust (piece of GARBAGE racist trash movie) was the first.

Middy

A sure sign of a great ghost movie is people claiming "nothing actually happens". These are the ones I consider most "realistic". No sharp-fanged movie ghosts flying at the camera, but just enough subtleties to send my imagination into overdrive. You need a creative mind to get the most out of these.
