Jay Davis

Really happy you guys are getting to see this. Along with Alien(s), The Terminator, First Blood, The Transformers The Movie (and some John Hughes movies I would never have admitted to back then), Beverly Hills Cop was a big part of my formative years. Enjoy!

JayF

Great classic movie. 2nd one is pretty good then it drops off sharply after that. I still don't know if either of you have seen Breaking Bad but there's someone who is a pretty big part of that show in this movie. No spoilers but I hope you consider watching the show if you haven't seen it.

JediLounger

I would be interested in you guys watching some of the other Martin Brest movies of note. Meet Joe Black (1998). Scent of a Woman (1992). Midnight Run (1988). Just don't watch Gigli (2003).

Guthwulf

Beverly Cop 3 is not as good as the first two, but still worth watching and entertaining enough. The 2nd one is the best in my opinion.

Dr. Funkenstein

This is GREAT! But everyone always skips over Murphy's first movie, which was excellent... "48 Hours" (1982). Please poll this one at some point?

Tenn Seven

That instrumental is called "Axel F" and yes, it was written for this movie.

8bitAndy

I miss the days when George would describe the poster to Simone. 'Twas a good bit.

Martin Nicholls

Before I've seen the reaction - Gilbert R. Hill who plays Inspector Todd was an actual cop and commanding officer (homicide) in Detroit at the time these movies were made. Suspect it's a R. Lee Ermey in Full Metal Jacket or Jon Iles in Mad Max Fury Road kind of situation where he was on set as an adviser and instead landed himself a part in the movie. He's really plausible and I guess that's what comes from using somebody who does the job IRL in a role like that.

Eddy V Ruiz II

The Serge character was so liked they made a tv show for him

Spacedone

I think part of the reason why the tone of the film felt a bit odd to you is the weird path it took in development. The original script was written in the late 70s and was written as a straight cop action movie without humour, then went through several rewrites that added in humour (including Stallone's), and had a load of 80s actors approached as the lead including Harrison Ford. Just before they started shooting they got Eddie Murphy to sign up and he again rewrote the script to add in more humour that fit his style. Frankly, if anyone else had done this movie other than Eddie Murphy I think it would have been long forgotten.

redddfer44

Stallone's Cobra was directed by the same guy who made Rambo 2. One of the more overtly political maverick cop films.

Young Blood Priest

The commanding officer in Last Action Hero was a parody of several characters, one of them being Inspector Todd in this movie. The others were the commanding officer in 48 hours and Captain Dobbie in Starsky & Hutch a cop show from the 70s.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

The sequel was pretty good too. The third was meh, imo. Eddie Murphy still has one of my favorite skits in all of SNL, Mr. Robinson's Neighborhood, a parody of Mr. Rogers but in the ghetto. Funny coincidence, Bronson Pinchot plays the funny art dealer guy with the weird accent, and he plays a small role in another crime movie about someone from Detroit who comes to LA: Quentin Tarantino written, Tony Scott directed, "True Romance", you guys gotta watch it, just for the insane number of cameos in it, so many actors, plus it's a really cool movie.

sarCC

Midnight Run is one of the most perfect films ever made. Easily my favorite DeNiro performance.

Opti_Frog

Axel is actually a fairly common name in Sweden. We have more than 58,000 Axels with ~18,000 using it as first name.

MrCAL

And the reason why they may have recognized it, is 'Crazy Frog' from the early 2000's sampled it.

Alan Kobb

The name of that song is "Axel F", so yes, it was the theme to this movie and became a big hit. By the way, George. I saw this movie on the opening weekend way back in the 1980s. You think that melody will be in your head for weeks? Ha! It will be in your head for the rest of your life! Simone-- Please move Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid onto the must-watch list and get it on a poll!!

Jesse Coombs

"Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid" is well worth a reaction. A classic post-modern western. (The Sting is also another amazing Paul Newman/Robert Redford pairing.)

Jesse Coombs

If you're looking for more Los Angeles buddy cop movies, you can't do better than "Kiss Kiss Bang Bang" and "The Nice Guys". Both are written and directed by Shane Black, who wrote the Lethal Weapon series, The Last Boy Scout, and of course, Last Action Hero.

Thats the doctor from stranger things

Loved this. Not only did I get a movie I have been campaigning for for months, which is also one of my favorite movies of all time, but I also get my favorite part of any videos: George mispronouncing my name.

SilentBobFather

I am watching 2 things at the same time: Beverly Hills Cop on one TV and Cinabinge on the other.

KnittingHaven

This came out during my senior year in high school, this soundtrack was so good for high school. Excellent year for movies, this one, Footloose, The Karate Kid, Ghostbusters. The 80s weren't perfect, but it was a fun time to be a teenager movies and music wise :). ETA: I really like the 2nd movie, too. The third one isn't so good, but I enjoyed it for getting to see more of Eddie as Axel.

Odd Thomas

Martin Brest has made some good movies: Midnight Run and Meet Joe Black

beefjerkywizard

I love that "art is crime" made an appearance

FranciscoGios

Simone I hope your new place is coming in together, and is it just me or does George have a perfect face by hitting all those poles when being distracted while eating his sandwiches? Oh well….. great reaction guys to this 80s movie.

JLee

+1 on KKBB and The Nice Guys both. And May I add "Midnight Run" for a follow up Martin Brest recommendation.

Odd Thomas

Planes Trains and Automobiles is coming! Yasss

djKENTO

is it a hot take to say Beverly Hills Cop II is better? I love the way Tony Scott shot it. It's a gorgeous 4k blu-ray.

Gary Fixler

Paul Reiser ("riser" not "ricer") was the husband on a very popular sitcom in the 90s - Mad About You - and his wife was Helen Hunt, who later built the Dorothies and chased tornadoes in Twister. I watched that show for years, so in Twister, Aliens, etc., it's always weird for me, because I know them way more from a comedy TV show. Mad About You aired alongside Seinfeld on NBC, and even took place in the same universe. Here's Paul's character on Mad About You visiting Kramer, across the hall from Seinfeld: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5HYoHiTzuGE They even had a revival miniseries in 2019: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XebAJuXlx6o

Young Blood Priest

I don’t think I’ve seen anyone react to either of these movies and it’s a shame cause they’re both good films.

sarCC

A similar 80s vehicle for a big SNL actor is FLETCH, starring Chevy Chase. It's a crime mystery fueled by a standout, comedic lead performance.

David Zabel

Yes, I hope George and Simone react to that movie too, and the music was done by the same guy. I have no idea why Fletch is not reacted to more. It's such a great film.

Alex Funnell

You will have probably picked up the song from crazy frog which used the same riff

Gary Fixler

I like how the chief made up a story where Axel was only there as an observer. Meanwhile, bodies all over the estate are riddled with bullets from Foley's gun, with about 20 alone in the big bad.

JayF

George, I have to disagree about the scene in PT&A. They weren't just "cuddling". The man had his hand all up in Steve Martin's ass. Thus the "those aren't pillows!" line. I don't think they overreacted.

Chase Schleich

Of course it's possible to watch two things at once while paying full attention to both. I'm doing it right now and basically every moment I'm home lol. I'm playing video games, watching you, and watching the movie all at the same time (I have 3 TV's and a laptop in front of me). If I do just one thing, I get bored.

Jack Urmson

This was the movie that took Eddie Murphy from popular comedian/actor to mega movie star. Beverly Hills Cop held the record for highest grossing R rated movie for nearly 20 years. Passion of the Christ is the film that knocked it off. 😐

The thing is though that he was a bad cop. He was corrupt and involved in some crimes.

ExtraBigAssTaco

Victor Maitland's house, where the final shootout takes place here, is the same house where they have the final shootout in Commando.

Kevin B

The man who murders Mikey is the same actor who plays Mike in Breaking Bad

Logan Kerlee

I'm genuinely happy that you both enjoyed this! This is a movie that I remember watching as a kid and getting tons of laughs! Now, as an adult II understand a lot more of everything that's going on - I enjoyed it far more. I'm hoping that ya'll continue along with the series. :)

Brendan Rafferty

To answer your question at the beginning… those were not extras and the film makers did not need permission. The law in the US allows anyone to film anyone, without consent, so long as they are outdoors in public

Deadly Ramon

And they just released Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F a few days ago as a Netflix exclusive. Can't wait to see you review the rest of the films in the now quadrilogy.

pinkdino99

RIP John Ashton (Taggart) whom passed this week. Beverly Hills Cop 2 is well worth the watch (Tony Scott directs). Surprised you did not recognise Ronnie Cox (Robocop, Total Recall). Judge Reinhold (Billy) was a superstar of B-movie comedies in the 80s, the best of which is Ruthless People with Bette Midler and Danny de Vito about inept kidnappers.

pinkdino99

There is another film from this era that has similar tonal whiplash called Stakeout which has cops Richard Dreyfuss and Emilio Estevez staking out a house with some outrageously funny comedic beats which then jumps in and out of this really gritty and grimy thriller about an escaped killer. Cult classic.
