Ted Lasso: Season 1 - Episode 1-3 - Patreon Version

Comments

Kameron Webb

Let's gooooo! About to arrive to my office and watch this!

Onno Smits

Oh my god, so excited for this! This show is right up your guys' alley, I feel! 🤩

Matthew Richson

Sweet! Gives me a reason to watch the show again!

Anthony Harris

Was trying to decide what to do tonight and this popped up so I am watching this.

Jeff K

The Wire is my favorite show of all-time, but given how dark and depressing it can be (even with all of the humor), there's really not a more perfect palate cleanser than Ted Lasso, quite possibly one of the most wholesome TV shows ever made.

Byron

The actress playing Rebecca was the “Shame” nun in game of thrones. So….terrifying is correct.

Denashi

Oh hell yes! One of the best shows I've ever seen... and I don't even like football! XD

JediLounger

Watching the first episode with you guys now. You guys are going to laugh, cry and fall in love with this show, I promise. Don’t prejudge anything and just roll with it, and it will work out in the end. Edit: Simone your Lego shirt in episode 2 is amazing lol.

Jeff K

And somehow, erotic still works too. But maybe that's just because we've now seen how gorgeous Hannah Waddingham is, so the Shame Nun becomes erotically terrifying in hindsight.

JayF

Holy shit this better be good with all the trouble I just had getting set up with an account to watch it. I hate Apple. Edit - After two episodes, I can say that I'm pleasantly surprised by this show.

Jeff K

The show is great but yeah, Apple TV is kind of a nightmare.

mojo shivers

A little late to the party, but I’m glad you’re getting to watch this as it’s one of the best shows on television. So sweet and dramatic in turns.

Edward Smyth

Roy is definitely one of my favourite characters. so glad to re-watch this with you both

Rasmus Kristensen

"that whole thing i Messi" - I see what you did there ;-)

Pam Nail

For some reason, "if we see each other in our dreams" was when I melted and fell for this show. So glad you're enjoying it so far!

Tall Paul

So happy you are enjoying the show. One inside joke - Ted's "Lets get out there and show Crystal Palace whose house this is" team talk is a nod to the show being filmed at Crystal Palace's stadium

Jeff K

I'm just gonna quote Simone in their wrap-up discussion, when she said, "It makes no sense to turn your nose up at something that makes people happy."

Jeff K

Ted gave Sam "Ender's Game." You can google lists of the books he gave the players and the significance; it might be mild spoilers but I don't think so, really.

ZP

Simone needs to watch this show with tissues. The tears will come.

Jeff K

Oh also, George and Simone: the actor/writer who plays Roy, Brett Goldstein, has a really entertaining podcast called "Films to be Buried With" where he brings on guests to, essentially, tell their life stories through the medium of film (what movies mean the most to them, what is the first movie they saw, etc). Highly recommend. But I'd also recommend avoiding last week's episode and the one coming out tomorrow, because it's a 2-parter with Brett and Jason Sudeikis and they obviously talk about Lasso and LOADS of spoilers for the full series.

Jeff K

Happy tears, sad tears, all kinds of tears. I love this show so much. I just recently re-watched season three because Natalie Gold was doing it, and I don't at all get why so many people think it fell off. Yeah, the episodes were much longer but re-watching it, every episode had so, so many good moments, and I just loved it. It's kind of like season five of The Wire in that regard; for some reason it got some backlash but when you watch it again, you realize, "Oh hey, this is actually REALLY good."

Denashi

By the way, did you notice the second episode was directed by Zack Braff?

Tomas

Ugh... While I do think Ted Lasso is a GREAT show and well worth watching, how do you guys always manage to overlap the shows you watch with the only other reactioner I follow? Guess I shouldn't complain and it's not like you're at fault for anything, but it's like you're some kind of espers in picking shows/movies that I just finished watching xD

Paul T Hewes

"Cougar Town" was underrated, and it took about 4 episodes to figure out that it was a bad premise and pivot to the good premise that was very entertaining.

Jeff K

First season had some bumps because they didn't seem to know what it was (evidenced by the fact that Bill Lawrence REALLY regretted the title and felt boxed in by it a bit). Once it evolved and became a "hang out" show, it was great.

REDR58

It also seems like the books get shared between some of the players later.

REDR58

Can’t wait to watch the reactions later. I think you are both going to have a great time with this series!

Boyan Konov

Im glad your getting a break after the wire. Its just a shame that this show is not for me at all. I find it horrid. Just pure schmaltz and bad jokes that makes a mockery out of football by people who have little idea about whats going on inside a club. Hope you enjoy it more than me and I cant wait for BB.

Andrew T

It's a good day when you've been looking forward to a Ted Lasso reaction and you learn you can binge (see what I did there) three episodes in one sitting.

Tenn Seven

Whatever, George. Stephen Wilhite, the creator of the GIF and definitely NOT a wanker, was adamant that it is pronounced with a soft G.

Princess Mia

the next ep is my fave of the whole show, roy is also my favourite character i love his grumpyness so much! (keeley is a close second)

JoeySnowyNoey

I watched the first episode of this show and couldn’t understand why it was so popular. I just didn’t get it. 😂 gonna try again with you guys and hopefully I’ll see what the fuss it about!

Michael Kang-Beats

Killing with kindness does work. It's a much more enjoyable way to live. We are so used to being cynical because we are constantly met with cynicism, irony, and "dunking-on" in our culture. Give it a try. It is something that can be learned. :)

Maarten Martens

Same here, I watched the first three and I couldn't get into it. I'm hoping it will work for me this time around. I've seen plenty of series where the first episodes were not really representative for the rest, so I'm trying to keep an open mind.

MJH

George was right about the English coming up with the term first. They invented the name and popularly used it for around a century. Saying America and Canada (among others) are incorrect in calling it Soccer is gaslighting at a national level. Oxford students came up with the name Soccer (from the name of the sport at the time, Association Football) and it was common use in Great Britain for about a century, before it suddenly wasn't. Upper class English have a historical habit of using language as a way to show their betterness to the lower classes. The entirety of England, upper and lower classes alike, got on board with deciding that Football was the correct and proper name and use of Soccer by Americans, Canadians, and others, was improper. American and Canadian troops learned it as Soccer during WW2 in Great Britain, beginning to grow the sport as troops came back home. Americans and Canadians knew it by the popularly used name of Soccer for around half a century before the English began to stop using it and eventually claiming it was improper (despite it still being used in England in some aspects to this day). Soccer is not the only instance. There are quite a few words that Americans and Canadians use which are deemed improper by the English, but actually came from the English. Spellings as well. The English have a habit of changing language and claiming everyone who didn't magically change with them is now speaking/writing improperly.

Jeff K

Great breakdown. And the TL;DR version: Association Football gained the slang term “assoccer” which became soccer. So, the term soccer, as you say, is a British invention.

Tay Schumaker

Sam’s book is Ender’s Game. You can see it in a smaller font under Orson Scott Card

Jeff K

Stephen King is adamant that the Steven Weber made-for-TV version of The Shining is better than Kubrick's version. Doesn't mean he's right.

Maarten Martens

Funnily enough I've been a longtime listener of the podcast and I've heard him talk about Ted Lasso all the time, but I've just seen his face for the first time seeing episodes 1-3 and his character Roy is the reason I'm going to keep watching. He feels much more '3-dimensional' than the rest, but that's probably because I already know him. Hopefully I'm going to warm up to the other characters as well.

Jeff K

I've watched this show many times at this point, and I knew they used Crystal Palace's stadium, but I still never picked up on that joke. That's great stuff.

Andrew T

Anyone keeping a record of Simone yawning whenever a character on screen yawns?

Logan Kerlee

This show here is fantastic! I'm a huge fan of this one. Already watched the entire series, so I'll be re-enjoying everything and I'm STOKED for it. :) I'm very much looking forward to future episodes.

Cubonemaker

Very much hoping you guys fall in love with the show enough that you jump straight into seasons 2 and 3. It’s a 3 part story, and only gets so much better!

Jeff K

I'm very curious to see what happens after Breaking Bad season one, since it's such a short season. Like, it feels like barely a season, so would they lump it together with season two? Or will they go back to Lasso in between?

Gary Fixler

I'm so glad you're watching these, because everyone I know has said I should, and now I will.

Matt Young

Will there be YouTube versions of this?

Wirenfeldt

Just a few thoughts I wish you would have uploaded this season in 4-3-3, since that happens to be a popular foot-soccer-ball formation.. And might also mean that I would not need to put in a biblical effort not to just binge watch the lot.. .. Although the last one seems unlikely.. Keep em coming.. The wait is killing me..

Travis H

Ted Lasso is one of my favorite shows of the last few years. It manages to be feel good yet also has stakes. It also makes the supporting cast not be one note characters, any other show Keeley would be the dumb bimbo, and Higgins would just be a stooge.

REDR58

Add “All That Jazz” to your list of movies to watch (referenced in episode 1)!

ChickensAreRacist

You really went outta your way to try and make it political, all merely due to the red and blue seats that spell Ted Lasso. Well then.

Grant Parker

SO happy y'all are watching this show. It is so special.

Monica Alarcon

I freaking LOVE this series, I hope you alternate watching the seasons of both this and Breaking Bad... the series finale left me in TEARS... I don't mind at all watching it again with you guys, in fact I'm loking forward to it...

Joits

oh hell yes!!!

Young Blood Priest

I wish I still had appletv cause I’d love to watch this with you guys. 😔

Will Moffett

I think the timing of the release of this show was absolutely perfect, since it was the beginning of Covid. With everyone feeling so lost and down, it was a nice lighthearted show that put you through the ringer of different emotions. If a show can make me laugh and cry within the same episode, I'm hooked. The characters are great as well. Seasons 2 and 3 have longer episodes.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

It's a really great blend of British and (North) American humor, I'm loving it! I also love the soundtrack haha. Btw it was actually the Brits who first called it "soccer", but then they changed it to football, which I agree makes more sense, and American Football should probably be called something else because the foot only comes into play at kickoff, field goals, and punting, but good luck changing Americans' minds on that.. Speaking of funny shows that mix British and American humor, "The Increasingly Poor Decisions Of Todd Margaret" was hilarious, doesn't have the heart this one does (I really love Ted, I try to be like that in my life, I dont see the point in being negative, the world has plenty of that as it is, right?) but it was funny as hell.

Martin

Btw, Simone and George need to take Roy’s advice and react to the funniest movie he’s ever seen: Stepbrothers.

Senec

@George I get it. Shes got big Lady Dimitrescu energy.

Kangdarius

Ehh during the pandemic I thought this was a decent show. After I could walk without a mask I found the overly joyous vibe of the show to be annoying lol. Completely dropped it in the middle of the 2nd season. I think

HeyHeyJK

Your loss and/or that's too bad. A show I'll rewatch so many times.

Keith Bishop

I believe you’re the 1st person I know to reference Todd Margaret. I have never met another person who watched it - all my friends and coworkers go glassy eyed when I try to describe it.

Nathan Hill

Best show in years. Major Parks and Rec vibes - it’s corny to say this but it makes you want to be a better person

Gary Fixler

I did not recognize the shame nun, but I did recognize the bar owner as the Slitheen woman from Doctor Who.

HeyHeyJK

Simone's statement of "I don't think my heart can take this show" is actually wrong. Based on what we've seen of her heart in so many reactions, this show is made for her, and both of their hearts have already felt a glimpse of what's to come. Keep the tissues handy because, for as funny as this show can be, there are some moments that will hit you hard in the feels, usually when you don't see them coming, and they can be happy or sad tears. You're both going to fall in love with almost everyone on this show and there are amazing character arcs ahead. Like another commenter said above, it's a show that makes you want to be a better person. I'm so happy to get to rewatch the whole series with both of you.

Darin Foat

My god, George. That is a massive mug.

John Rybock

Brett Goldstein, aka "Roy Kent", was hired as a writer on the show, and did a Hail Mary to ask to play Roy. He's pretty much the opposite of Roy - look up his Muppet Christmas Carol show.

NOT Chase Lonergan

I really hope you do all three seasons. It's just such an oasis of goodness and nothing makes me happier than seeing simone on the verge of tears of joy every episode

Astraeos

Yeah I'm definitely with George on the Jamie Tart thing. Simone is very lucky to apparently not have met people like that? I dunno, maybe it's a guy thing, or for my perspective, more of an American thing. But honestly almost every guy I met before turning like 30 was pretty much just like Jamie Tart. Just emotionless, shallow, egotistical children. As a guy whose very much not like that, its pretty tough trying to make male friends.

Michael Short

they should have the british actors speak british english. They say Jumpber, not sweater. lol

Khan1001

Love watching this show with you, been meaning to watch this for a while but never got round to it, also can you please add 'Afterlife' (Netflix) to your list of shows to watch, its also a British/comedy/drama series, thanks

Amelie W

"He thinks he's mad now, just wait till we win him over." Probably one of the greatest lines in TV history. And of course, Ted's absolutely right.

Justtired

Wonderful reaction, as usual. I have to say, your laughter is infectious. Thank you for bringing a smile to my face. And since you asked…bear in mind, I’m 53 lol First concert: Lionel Richie/Tina Turner. Best Concert: Metallica/Queensryche/Faith No More/Soundgarden

djKENTO

as a man who deals with pretty bad anxiety and is also autistic, i watch a lot of things over and over again for comfort viewing. I like to watch with you guys because honestly… I’m lonely and it’s hard for me to make connections. I don’t want to admit how many times I have already watched all three seasons with you guys… I mean all the way through start to finish full rewatches. Don’t even want to say… And here I am… 2:19am about to start another full rewatch just to stay up until Hellboy 2 is posted.
