Hernani

The remake is surprinsingly quite good, one of the most brutal mainstream horror movies of the last decade.

Jay Davis

I dunno about a snake hawk... but I DO know a story about a lady hawk. Ladyhawke (1985) js

Jimmy H

Back in college we had an Evil Dead drinking game. Every time Ash gets hit in the head, take a drink.

PIG

The remake of Evil Dead is one of the very few remakes that I actually like. I like it a lot, actually.

Readster

There are quite a few films which are remakes that are better than the originals. (The Thing, Ocean's 11, Scarface, The Mummy, etc etc) Generally when the remake is better than the original you never hear about the fact that it's a remake though.

redddfer44

Good choices! I really like Scorsese's "Cape Fear", but both movies have their own strengths and the Scorsese version was wise enough to reinterpret the concept. I've yet to see The Departed, but I think it's one of the most well-regarded American remakes of a non-American film.

Einherj

A good excuse to watch the first one again. I think I've only seen it once before. I used to watch Evil Dead 2 over and over with my friends as a kid. It was the most amazing thing we had ever seen.

redddfer44

6:36 George lol <3 Sam Raimi is one of my favorite directors. He followed this film with a zany crime comedy "Crimewave" that's co-written by the Coen brothers. It almost ruined Raimi's career. I'm a big fan of "live action Looney Tunes" vibes and Raimi's shenaginans, but that movie is such a stinker.

Diiirk706

Evil Dead 2 is actually a Requel; it's the first movie again, but done G R E A T, AND with a better budget, arguably the best in the franchise. Army of Darkness is so Damn good too, and important as Hell to pop-culture as we know it. Ash vs The Evil Dead is such a God Damn fun Ass Live Action cartoon, and pretty well written with some great lore expansions to boot....

Michael Robayo

Awesome! Please watch the trilogy! Evil Dead 2 and Army of Darkness.

Einherj

Army of Darkness is basically Sam Raimi throwing stuff at Bruce Campbell. It's great.

dieselbeast

first one straight up supposed to be horror/ second one horror/comedy, third ones straight up comedy, whoever said the second one was better couldn't have meant straight up horror better

Harold Wright

The remake of Evil Dead is great, I'm of course talking about Evil Dead 2, not the new one ;) Can't wait to see you guys react to that one, love this series.

MacGuffinStuff

Oh yeah, Sam Raimi, the Coens, Frances McDormand, they were all friends, at one point I believe they shared a house in Silver Lake (suburb of LA).

Middy

Depends what you want from your horror. If you're only expecting to be scared then of course, nothing else matters. Evil Dead 2 isn't just funny, it has a better story, better visuals, better dialogue...

Middy

I feel like this franchise is confusing to newcomers, with the tonal shifts, Evil Dead 2 technically being part remake, then an actual remake over a decade later... etc, etc. To break it down though: Evil Dead 2 has comedy elements and is the movie most fans consider best represents of the franchise as a whole. It's the one they think of when you say Evil Dead. Army of Darkness (the third movie) and Ash vs. Evil Dead (the TV show) both continue the comedy aspects. A lot of people will say AoD is their favourite, while others enjoy it but felt the comedy got a little too silly, losing the fine balance we had with ED2. Evil Dead (2013) and Evil Dead Rise (2023) are a full on reboot of the franchise. The comedy is almost entirely gone in favour of raw brutality. Evil Dead received "okay" reviews, but felt a little stale and uninspired to some, while Rise gave us a fresh setting and an interesting new direction that a lot of people reacted positively to.

Bill Campbell

why are we doing all these horror movies in August and September? This is October stuff

Haye Zeus

I used to be in the camp of thinking Evil Dead 2 was better. But I always went back and watched this one more and more. I just love the atmosphere in this film. It’s so quaint but I still think it’s effective. The second is a lot more fun and truly represents Evil Dead moreso. But I love this franchise. Even the remakes I have enjoyed.

Johnny Liu

To answer the Coen bros question, yes they were friends with Sam Raimi back in the day and I believe were roommates in college or something like that. The whole trilogy is a must watch. Evil Dead 2 is a schlock masterpiece I cannot wait for that reaction!

JokerDanny

Evil Dead Rise is one of the best horror movies of the last 10 years

Monica Alarcon

Because they are awesome and do horror all year long, unlike most reactors who only do them in October...

David N

I always remember enjoying the remake of dawn of the dead. Its very different from the original but its fun regardless. Also people talk about (judge) dredd being good but ive never seen it.

Chase Lonnergan

This is one of those cases where we LOVED the remake. The 2013 Evil Dead was AWESOME! If it has Evil Dead in the title, you should watch it! Unless it's Italian, don't watch that one.

simon brouillard

Sam Raimi, the Coens, Frances McDormand, bruce campbell holy hunter and kathy bates lived together for a while

simon brouillard

I would suggest to anyone who loves that movie to listen to the podcast blank check and their episode on the evil dead (they did the entire raimi filmography)

JediLounger

Just finished the movie with you guys. Wait till you watch Evil Dead 2. That movie takes non digital effects to the absolute limit of inventiveness and technique to create some of the most incredible in camera effects ever made. It’s also absolutely hilarious, Bruce Campbell showed himself to be the king of physical slapstick comedy. Watch it as soon as you can.

Joshua Stewart

I'm super glad you guys enjoyed this movie as much as you did! In response to your questions about remakes as an avid Friday the 13th fan I hafta say the remake from 2009 is pretty good. It isn't better than the original BUT it was in my opinion a great movie none the less. Can't wait to see whats next!

Rob M

All of the Evil Dead movies are worth watching. This and Scream are easily the most consistent horror franchises

IncredibleBulk

as a fan of the entire franchise, including the tv show, honestly i liked the newer films. evil dead rise was really good and i hope you get to it

Tenn Seven

Bruce Campbell, who played Ash in this, also played "Ring Announcer" (for the wrestling scene) in Spider-Man and "Snooty Usher" (the guy who doesn't let Tobey Maguire into the theater to see MJ's performance) in Spider-Man 2, the two Sam Raimi Spider-Man movies you both have reacted to.

Dioskur

I'm born 1980. At like 10 years old I watched this and me and my friends were scared for years. Its one of my defining movie experiences

howtocookazombie (Stan)

🧟‍♀️ Please please also watch also the second movie and "Army of Darkness" too, which is the third movie. "Army of Darkness" is different from it's style but it is also very good and had more budget. 🧟‍♂️

FranciscoGios

The practical effects in this movie are Top Notch 👍, Part 2 and Army of Darkness next!?

Odd Thomas

I think I've only seen this once, whereas I return to 2 and 3 quite a bit. 2 is basically a remake of 1, but better

Ludovic Ligot

Sam Raimi's first feature film was "It's Murder !" (1977, 70 minutes), shot with a Super-8 camera. Then "Within the Woods" (1978, 32 minutes) was made to validate the Evil Dead concept and it convinced producers. Like many people, I would say : watch "Evil Dead 2" + "Army of Darkness" + the "Ash vs Evil Dead" series (it's totally over the top and brilliant) !

George, If you were with me, you wouldn't be here in this strip club shaking it for dollar bills!

🖤 Something to note about the remake George referred to. Its not really a remake. Kind of but not really. More of a soft reboot. Every movie in the Evil Dead franchise is essentially a sequel to the one that came before it. Some of them, while sequels, are also considered soft reboots as well. Evil Dead 2 is a sequel/soft reboot of The Evil Dead, and Army of Darkness (Evil Dead 3) is a direct sequel to Evil Dead 2 (not a soft reboot whatsoever just straight-up sequel. The next Evil Dead movies that came about two decades later are in the same category. A soft reboot of the franchise, kind of yes, but they're still sequels, And the TV show is connected to the movies as well.

Odd Thomas

I'll give remakes a chance. The Ring, Insomnia, Vanilla Sky - all better than the original imo. The 2013 Evil Dead was really good - not seen Rises yet but it's coming to Netflix soon. The Ash vs Evil Dead TV series is great too!

JayF

Remakes that are better that instantly popped into my head when you asked - True Grit (2010) The Thing (1982) Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978)

Odd Thomas

Bruce Campbell has cameos in most Sam Raimi films. The very first thing I ever saw him in was Darkman, Raimi's first superhero film

Jay

So weird hearing you refer to him as Ashley 😂

Logan Kerlee

Very happy that you both really enjoyed this one! I've been a big fan of this series for a long, long time! My favorite of them all is the third! Army of Darkness is SUCH A RIDE! Definitely looking forward to watching that with you guys. lol, George has my support! Horror/Freaky movies can be watch ANY TIME! What the hell, you two?! xD hahahaha, loved how this came to a close.

djKENTO

All Evil Dead is good Evil Dead. The 2013 “remake” (which is not a remake and is actually in the canon of this franchise as a whole), the recent film which is yet another sequel, army of darkness the 3rd film also rules and so does Ash vs the Evil Dead the TV show. Fans like it all. It’s all good. it’s all worth your time.

Monica Alarcon

I agree with most, the whole Evil Dead franchise (5 movies, TV series, videogames, comics etc) are good, you should give all the movies a watch up to and including Evil Dead Rise...

sheriffjt

2 & 3 are my faves, but I love all of them, even the new ones

Chase Schleich

Actually just watched a documentary thing about this movie a couple months back. From what I remember, the crew literally found that cabin while scouting for shooting locations (how fucking lucky is that?!). It was just an old abandoned cabin in the middle of nowhere. The entire crew lived in it during the shoot and it was freezing. They would burn wood in a trash can in the middle of the floor to try and stay warm. Bruce Cambell and Sam Rami described it as hell. They were all young and having fun, but were also just miserable day and night. Fans of the film eventually found the cabin and would stay there, until someone accidently burnt it down.

Opti_Frog

Regarding the remake and the follow-up: As a fan of the first two Evil Dead movies, and enjoying the third, i think the 2013 remake is fine. Not spectacular in any way, but a worthy inclusion in the franchise. But Evil Dead Rise was absolute garbage. I could not believe they put the Evil Dead name on such a hot mess.

Opti_Frog

Here is the context of the Stephen King quote, from the review he wrote after seeing The Evil Dead at the Cannes film festival: "When I met Sam Raimi at the Cannes Film Festival in May of 1982, my first thought was that this fellow was one of three things: a busboy, a runaway American high school student, or a genius. He wasn't a busboy, and Raimi finished high school some time ago, although he has the sort of ageless sophomore looks that are going to keep bartenders asking to see his driver's license or state liquor card until he is at least thirty-five. That he is a genius remains unproven; that he has made the most ferociously original horror film of 1982 is beyond doubt. The only problem is that you may never see it."

Dazzler & Em

There is a short video on you tube with Bruce campbell explaining the link between Evil Dead one and two. Only a couple of minutes long but easy way to avoid any confusion. The first trilogy is very good, the remake is excellent and brutal and Evil Dead Rises may well be a sequel to the original 3 films as it concerns a different book of the dead(the film states there are 4).

Wyatt Nuxoll

The snake hawk story was hilarious , ..... which leads me to ask a question, because I remember simone saying she doesn't go outside a lot ........ so my question is ...lmao. simone, .... were you the women in the story? , did you get attacked by a hawk and a snake all in the same day ? Hahaha lmao As for the 2013 remake evil dead which I saw in theaters, I have to say I think they did a great job it really is a good remake . However , the gore and blood that is in it along with the brutal grotesque scenes . Would permit me to say that it's a hard watch for simone , definitely, I know George would make it through the film OK but simone probably would be haunted by scenes in this movie and would need a vomit bucket

Wyatt Nuxoll

I remember watching something about this too , I also remember something about in the scenes when the demon is rushing towards the cabin or into it ... it was literally just a cameraman on a pedal bike or something like that because with the low budget they had to get creative , but man , this movie made a massive profit

Jacob King

A slight tangent to the Evil Dead franchise is Drag Me to Hell. It’s not part of the canon but has the same horror comedy vibes as Evil Dead 2. Any Evil Dead fans who missed it, I remember it underperforming on release, have a real treat ahead of them.

Gary Fixler

Good movies are good anytime, sure, but it's about setting the mood, or like pairing the right food with the right wine. The food and wine are great on their own, sure, but isn't the right combo even better? I don't know; I don't drink alcohol :) I wouldn't enjoy scary movies as much outside in broad daylight, though. I want to wait until it's dark out, get cozy, etc. I had an amazing experience diving into the first Harry Potter book during a raging, all-night thunderstorm that took out the power right away. I set up a bunch of candles, got in my recliner, and finally dove into that book series my friends wouldn't shut up about (which was only up to book 4 at that point), and I read it to flickering candlelight, while Florida tried to tear my apartment building apart, and made constant flashes and booming thunder sounds. It was so intense and fun. That's why I like scary movies in October (haunty types, not like killer thrillers, which work whenever), and Christmas movies in December. They just pair well. It's fun to finish up a Child's Play (w/ Chucky), and then return to a house full of spooky Halloween decor to keep the theme going. Visiting Japan is great whenever, but especially so when the cherry trees are in bloom.

Jon B

On a side note, did you guys watch Battlestar Galactica the TV series? If not, I think it would be a fun journey to follow along with you. It's one of those rare shows that have space battles, good acting and it also poses some serious questions regarding man vs. machine.

Chase Schleich

I think doing the TV show after they're done with the movies would be cool too. I've seen that a lot of other react channels have done the show.

Kinokind

So, here's the deal: "Evil Dead 2" is a remake of "Evil Dead", except with a bunch more money. Raimi had so much success with "Evil Dead" that he was able to come up with better financing, and re-did the same plot only more extreme - including the slapstick. Imagine if the Three Stooges made "Evil Dead". And then "Army of Darkness" is a sequel to that. They should all be seen, and in that order. The TV series "Ash vs. Evil Dead" is fun, too. Years later we get to see what has become of Ash (Ne'er do well, dissolute womanizer, badass)and since it was not network there is just as much blood and gore. Hey, I've always had a couple issues with this and the tribute "Cabin in the Woods". Why would anyone go to the massive trouble and expense to build a steel truss bridge that only goes to a small cabin? And in "Cabin in the woods" there's an entire tunnel through a mountain that only goes to a small cabin. . . What the heck? Also, in this picture, where does the electricity come from? They don't have a generator, are they trying to tell us there's power grid out there? I'm not serious, just picky. I love the film. In fact I was working as a volunteer at The Redford Theatre, in a Detroit suburb, back in the 80s when "Evil Dead" had its world premier there. Raimi, Tappert, Campbell, etc. were all from the area and rented the Redford (which is/was a classic film theatre) for the premier. They rented it again later, for another film, and I got to sit in the auditorium a few rows behind Raimi watching dailies for that film. Don't ask. We were all in our 20s then . . . Sigh.

Noe Ramirez

Sam Rami is the king of camp! Idk how to describe it but all of his movies just have a certain tone to them. They're serious enough that you get invested in the characters and feel what they're going through, but goofy in a way that gives the movie a fun energy. I love his movies! Drag Me To Hell is a ton of fun as well as gross and creepy.

DM DC

As I understood it, Evil Dead 2 is both a reboot and remake. If I recall hearing Sam Rami couldn't get certain rights from the 1st one and so he redid the whole thing.

Great thing about this channel is seeing a movie I loved as a teen, maybe didn't appreciate so much any longer, then see somebody else love it for what it is. Fantastic. If you do the sequels. Second one they had rights issues, so they kind of re-do the first movie as an extended recap to start off. Whole thing is played more for comedy, and they had a bigger budget. Third one is off the wall, and made even my non-horror pals happy when dragged along to watch it.
