Breaking Bad: Season 1 - Episode 5 & 6 - Patreon Version

Comments

Jay Davis

George, Simone, Coffee and Meth. Not a bad way to start a Tuesday.

J.R.

great idea going onto season 2 before potentially breaking for ted lasso, given the writers strike back then that led to season one not technically ending until season 2 episode 2 it would feel weird to break after s1 episode 7

JayF

Ah yes the f________ m______ scene. Can't wait to see the reaction to that moment.

redddfer44

Oh, you're curious about jury duty? Good thing the excellent classic, "12 Angry Men", currently at spot 5 on IMDB, is just about that! (It's one of the three films of the Top 20 that you haven't watched yet.) Considering your comments here, it'd make for some really interesting conversations in the reaction. Or after it.

JayF

Assuming they don't go into more detail in this episode, pseudoephedrine "pseudo" is needed to make meth. It's an ingredient in some over the counter drugs. In the early 2000s, the US government passed a bill requiring pharmacies to keep track of sales which made it much harder for meth cooks to stockpile it.

Jeff K

100%. An all-time great film with an amazing cast. Also they should supplement that with the TV series “Jury Duty” if you ask me.

Mati D.

Welcome Heisenberg.

Jeff I.

Glad y'all are enjoying the show so far! Also good to hear you're going straight into season 2. You might have a hard time not going right into season 3. Each season of the show gradually ramps up the stakes/danger/tension/emotions/etc more and more. :-)

David Dotting

I love how real Hank feels as a character. He's rough around the edges, and he's crass and rude, but he comes across as a real human being so well and I put that squarely on the actor.

Jeff K

Dean Norris is a really terrific actor and he just nails this role. Cranston and Paul (rightly) got all of the plaudits, as did a few actors who haven’t been introduced yet, but Hank was always an unsung MVP. One of my favorite things about him is that he comes across as a blowhard and a bit of a doofus, but he’s actually very, very good at his job.

Dwight Donaldson

Whenever you guys get back to watching Ted Lasso, I highly recommend you rewatch season 1 right before you do. There are just a ton of little threads and references that carry through if you're paying attention. (Not trying to rain on BB, just wasn't sure where else to post this)

Charlotte Drolet

Remeber those meals? Yall had parents? I grew up without parents. Mother died 2 months after my birth and father was in prison and later died. Never knew either. My meals was way cooler. Watching tv shows while I ate.

Kasa

idk if they'll be able to go back to Ted Lasso once they finish season 2 of this.

David N

Man, I never thought I could be appreciative of our legal system. Corrupt law makers and judges are better than simple dissapearing so I guess its a sign of progress.

Christoph Plank

Werner Heisenberg got the nobel prize "for the creation of quantum mechanics" and formulated the uncertainty principle. Not exactly a lightweight. He's no pushover, Dude.

ChickensAreRacist

Nice, George. I didn’t know anything about Heisenberg til I saw Oppenheimer. And damn that’s sad about your grandfather (?) or uncle? Sorry don’t remember. But yeah that’s horrific. I’m sorry.

ThePVO

In The US most cold medicine is kept behind glass or the counter in pharmacies because it can be used to make street drugs. Is it not like that in Canada? You guys import all your meth?

Keith Jones

That intervention scene really gets me every time. Having went through chemo years ago it just hits me right in the feels. Knowing now what it's like, if I were in Walts shoes where his 5 year rate is like 15% I'd probably skip it as well. Thankfully, my particular cancer had a 5 year rate in the high 90s with high chance of full cure. Chemo is a shit show...but so is death; so you gotta choose between the shit sandwich with or without mayo.

Jeff K

Glad to hear you’re doing well! My grandfather had cancer and I remember seeing him literally about a week before he died, and he was just so tired and disoriented and clearly just in so much pain. He was struggling to stay awake and aware and confused about who was who. It was heartbreaking but I was also only 14 so I didn’t know what to do around him. That was Christmas 1994, we were back for the funeral January 1995.

Mr TV Eye

The whole intervention-scene is peak television writing and acting. What starts as a pretty cringe, almost funny thing turned so layered and deep seamlessly, and you feel like you're sitting next to them in the same room the whole time. And it hits extra hard if you have some kind of similar experience. I was only 9 when my mother died of cancer, so way too young to fully understand what was going on in the month before. But the whole atmosphere that was present all the time, this mix of hope, despair and "how to deal with the whole situation", was perfectly condensed into that one scene.

Jonah

Simone teasing George for having interest in jury duty only to have that bomb dropped. The contrast in emotion in her face in a matter of a second or two. LOL!

OldBeardedGuyReacts

After this, if you want to watch another Brian Cranston show that's amazingly well written and will make you cry your eyes out, watch Your Honor.

TGrimace

Scarface coming up? Oh, that is just awesome! I can't wait! Oh, and don't worry about Jesse. I'm sure it's nothing but good things for Jesse from now on. Everything will be coming up Jesse!

redddfer44

I always thought that Walt picking Heisenberg had to do with the uncertainty principle: "we cannot know both the position and speed of a particle, such as a photon or electron, with perfect accuracy; the more we nail down the particle's position, the less we know about its speed and vice versa." (Thanks, Caltech Science Exchange, for putting it into words that a guy like me understands, too.) I think the show's already done that, in a way: it either moves along at breakneck speed in a sort of "why the fuck is he acting like that?" or it's really slowing down to examine Walt's inner life.

Reynaldo Lorenzo

That's why I find it stupid what they do. They watch so much content when they pause a show and start a new one, and with Breaking Bad in between, they will forget so many callbacks and stuff that will make it annoying when they go back to Ted Lasso, and I don't know why they would do that. Ted Lasso is so easy to binge-watch, just like The Bear and Barry. I subscribed to their Patreon for Ted Lasso, and I was so mad when they didn't go straight to S2.

redddfer44

Also looking forward to seeing your little friend that I can say hello to!

Jomero

If you've played the Final Fantasy VII Remake, you may recognize Badger's voice as "Wedge." As for why Walt isn't a part of Gray Matter, they do address it eventually.

UNC

Haven’t watched yet so sorry if this was addressed in the intro, would love to get 1.7 and 2.1 next week if possible.

Ludovic Ligot

Similarities : Walter H. (White) ----> Werner H. That could be enough... And Heisenberg was a real genius in physics, like Walter is a genius in chemistry. Heisenberg had a dark side too (his behaviour towards the Third Reich) !

Jonah

Welcome to the brilliance that is the writing and acting of breaking bad. Emotion provoking to the highest extent.

Jonah

It's dope that you guys have so much appreciation and fascination with the cold opens, this show does a really good job of cliff hangers, cold opens, teasers, time skips, flash backs and a LOT of cinema magic that just makes you WANT MORE. hahaha.

Ben

Personally, I'm one of the people that thinks this show just gets better and better as it goes, but having said that, episode 5 is absolutely one of my favourite episodes. The "talking pillow" scene alone would give it that edge, but everything related to Gray Matter and Walt's feelings of regret add a lot to that. Basically, there is a lot in that episode! I consider episodes 4 and 5 kind of a pair, in that they're much slower than the previous episodes, but they contain so much. I'm writing this comment just after I finished your reaction to episode 5, now to watch episode 6, which feels like the beginning of something in itself!

Jeff I.

Yeah, Breaking Bad has a pattern of having two or three episodes in a row that are slower and more about character development/insights followed by one or sometimes two episodes in a row where some insane stuff happens that really moves the overall plot and character relationships in a new direction.

Generators

they explain it in the video that they are doing ep 7 next week as well as season 2 episode 1.

The scent of film and TV is all over this RUM. Smells like freaking tee ah WANNA

🖤Something weird just happened. I just started episode 6 but had to pause it just to throw this out in a comment. When Simone said in the very beginning of ep. 6 "Making the meth" I sang to myself "making the meth downtown" just like any Weird Al fan would do, and George sang the exact same thing right after. Low-hanging fruit if you know that song I suppose but still. Taken aback I was. Aback I tell you XD

Sarah

Heisenberg has entered the chat :D

Jay

This show really is low key hilarious. Hank with the talking pillow😂😂

William Moffett

Yeah, Sudafed is sold OTC but if you buy too much from one store, it throws up red flags. It's an ingredient in meth if you're making it without proper ingredients apparently.

Gary Fixler

About 10 years ago I was driving past a park in North Hollywood, and there were at least 20 dudes with those signs, all flipping them in unison, and one guy leading them at the front, like a workout video. I looked it up later online, and learned about Aarow. https://signspinnerads.com/los-angeles-sign-spinners/ It does work, mostly, I think, because it lets you know that something exists. In LA especially, you pass by hundreds, if not thousands of businesses on your daily commute, and never see most of them. There's too much to see, and too much traffic. I had one almost work on me, I think for a taco place. I was like "Whoa, there's a taco place over there?" Then I thought about tacos and got hungry whenever I drove past that intersection. There are also competitions. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fBFiUtLqnG0

One of the greatest things about this show are the countless memorable characters that are introduced through the 5 seasons. I’m giddy thinking about your reactions as they are brought into the story.

Shane Driscoll

I love the scene at the end where gets in his car and lets the adrenaline rush take over. Ironically, he feels more alive than ever did before the cancer diagnosis.

Vwlss Nvwls

This show does an amazing job with all the characters, and telling their stories. And also keeping you constantly on the edge of your seat, and in awe of what you are witnessing. You are in for one crazy fun ride.

David Vicari

I know at this point it is hard to believe... but the show keeps getting better and better. It ends as strong as it starts. Obviously you'll want to watch the movie and the Better Call Saul series too!

Travis H

I really wanted to comment on stuff but I realized all my opinions on the show are influenced by what comes later. I’m going to continue watching because the show is amazing and I haven’t ever rewatched it fully, but probably won’t be commenting much just in case my opinions come off as spoilers. Enjoy the ride!

Gary Fixler

Simone has heard the name Heisenberg before, being a TNG nerd. Heisenberg's eponymous Uncertainty Principle states that we cannot know both the position and momentum of a particle, and the more certain we become about one, the less certain we end up about the other. It's a problem for Star Trek transporters (and maybe replicators?), because those need to rebuild things at the particle level, so they'd need to have control over such properties. To get around it, there's an unexplained "black box" in the bowels of transport systems called the Heisenberg compensator, and it's one of the bits of technobabble that shows up in episodes of Star Trek. O'Brien, Barclay, LaForge, Data - they sometimes had to work on it, and they even built it as a prop for the show for at least one episode.

Grand Moff Slackin'

Javelina is a kind of wild pig. Javelina is a common spanish name for them. They're also called peccary in english.

Astraeos

Can't wait for that Ted Lasso Season 2 soon! I gave up on my independent rewatch of it, just gonna wait for you guys. Probably gonna rewatch all of Season 1 right before too. The show just hits perfectly right now in this miserable, trash world.

ChickensAreRacist

Simone what’s up with that bucket of a coffee cup?! What kinda coffee?

Actuarial Lurker

George and Simone- This takes place in New Mexico- so the drug making in the van is on the indigenous reservation , and the arrested janitor is a Native American

Actuarial Lurker

The other actors were NOT informed that he was shaving his head s the shock at breakfast was REAL from Skyler and Walt Jr

Danika Silva

Woooooo!! Yeah!!! I don't care if it's pink yellow, blue....just bring us more of this stuff....🩷💛💙

Ludovic Ligot

I'm watching the show for the FIRST TIME these days, Finally ! Already watched 4 seasons and I think it's totally brilliant. 😎

JoeySnowyNoey

I got selected to be a part of a jury, but at the first trial the defendant didn't show up at all. She got a warrant for her arrest, and we were all dismissed from the trial completely. Didn't get to find out what it was about or nothing. Just sat for 30 minutes with some strangers. Lol

Brant

You should start looking at the titles of the episodes in the pre-show

Reid Mclellan

I bet we'll find out whether or not they do read the titles when we get to who-you-better-call's episode I imagine George might say something I should clarify obviously they read the titles but maybe they could discuss in the pre-show what the titles mean

Jobbe Smit

The acting in this show is just so good.

GuillermoPerez

TIGHT…TIGHT..TIGHT YEAH!!!! 10 years ago today; 9/29/13; the final episode premiered! Good times, GREAT TIMES I get to relive it with George & Simone 💯

Logan Kerlee

Book of a comment, will be in the reply to this. :P

Logan Kerlee

lmao, wow Simone! How insensitive to his people's history! xD Milhouse's dad, 100% someone to look up to, George. :P He doesn't want to be a burden on anyone. That's why he isn't wanting to accept charity. Pride is very important to someone who's fallen ill. It's one of the final things that they can control. This is coming from someone that's disabled and is in a wheelchair. xD Those buddies of his.. yikes! Fucking assholes. Ditching him at that moment is harsh as fuck. :P Walt Jr.'rs words hit HARD but he's speaking from the heart. Marie's words are also honest and her husband joining her side in the end only makes sense. Walter's wife is ONLY wanting her husband to be well. That's all that she's focused on. I've been a burden on others with my disability. My mother is well on her way to being in the same boat as she has HIV. I have no idea what she's going through physically but I can't imagine what it's like for her mentally. 100% George! This was his choice. That's a HUGE thing for people in that situation. xD Hank had his heart in the right place! He's using sports analogies to make sense of his feelings. xD I'm VERY glad that George can see this from Walter's POV! Obviously not for what happened but yeah, George can understand why he's the way he is. The talking pillow is 100% that, yeah, Simone. I really admire the show for having her character behave the way she is. NEXT EPISODE lmao, you two are great! The way this episode opens is pretty crazy. Walter's sickness while going through chemo is brutal! It's also very accurate. My ex wife's mother went through chemotherapy and it was a brutal time for her. VERY disheartening and tough for everyone involved. I've got no idea how it was for her but yeah, had to be very difficult. She's the only person that I've known personally that's gone through chemotherapy. Heisenberg doesn't take shit. He means business. Very happy that you're both enjoying this. Jesse's character will evolve and change throughout this series. I'm looking forward to seeing both of your takes on him and the rest of the cast as the show progresses! Looking forward to next week's episodes! :)

China Andronicus

Jesse is honestly too good for everyone else on this show. He breaks my heart every time I watch it. I'm REALLY interested to see how your perspectives on the storyline evolve as this show goes on and evolves.

Brad Lowry

I think "Heisenberg" is more about the Heisenberg Uncertainty Principal. I mean what is more uncertain than Walter White?

Hexon66

Is Simone incredibly petite or is she drinking out of a flower pot?

Hexon66

I think George was spot on with his assessment of Walt's 'choice' speech. I think everything Walt didn't say explicitly to his family, was meant to be understood implicitly by the audience. At this moment in the series, I think I did recognize he regrets giving up his place in Grey Matter, (feeling compelled?) to marry Skyler, and though he'd never voice it, having a son with CP.

Michael Short

i've seen one of those human signs before, my thought was more, I should never shop at that business again...

Dan Holmes

George: "There's no perfect judicial systems" Simone: "Oh God" Me: "Oh the irony"

Samedi

Psuedoephedrine - you break it down into ephedrine which is one of the main components of methamphetamine. It's found in cough syrup and cold medications, it's the reason you can't buy a lot of cough syrup in the USA. "Home cooks" or idiots as I call them, use it to make drugs. The "home cook" process is ridiculously dangerous, both in the toxins and the fact it can explode at any moment because it's highly unstable. Also to get a 99.1% pure methamphetamine like Walt makes in the show, you need a controlled lab environment, it would be near-impossible to do the way it's shown in the show.

Thall

The way it's shown is absolutely false anyway. There is no way to adopt it to make it work, because it's complete fabrication. Thankfully.

Thall

The actor for Tuco also played in an Episode in DS9, the one where they are fighting against the dominion in an entrenched position. Forgot what its called
