I wanna recommend “A Time to kill” and “prisoners”. Both dark but great movies!

JediLounger

Wes Craven skipped Elm Street 2-6(he wrote 3) but he wrote and directed the last one, Wes Cravens New Nightmare (1994). You guys should absolutely watch at least that one. I promise it’s worth it. In terms of this movie, what really holds up for me is the physicality of the stunt men who play Ghost Face. The absolute horror of what’s happening, crazy nut bag trying to stab someone, is broken up by the hilarious stunts of getting smacked in the face with a fridge door or hit in the crotch with a beer bottle. Just how goofy they play it, flailing around in the costume cracks me up every time.

Odd Thomas

Ok stay calm people, it's happening!

Odd Thomas

Nowadays everything is meta so it's hard to appreciate just how game-changing Scream was. Yes, we had meta films like Last Action Hero and New Nightmare before it but people didn't really 'get it' until Scream hit big. I recommend you watch the first 4 Wes Craven Screams as they're all great - after the director died and others took over the franchise it just hasn't been the same imo. 6 was so frickin' ridiculous it may as well have been an SNL skit.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Definitely get caught up I Know What You Did Last Summer before jumping into Scary Movie if you want the full depth of references :)

djKENTO

My Scream Story: I live where this was filmed and it’s based in my county. Woodsboro is in Sonoma County California just north of San Francisco. In fact at the end credits there is a call out to the high school I went to for NOT letting them film there. There was an agreement made that it would be filmed at Santa Rosa high school but parents groups protested because there was a real murder of a young girl here 3 years earlier. You may have heard of Polly Klisaas. She’s the reason the US has the “three strikes law” I also worked at the video store featured in this film, Bradley Video. This is quite literally my home town horror.

DeAndrew Greene

If I remember correctly this movie was originally called Scary movie funny enough but I think the studio thought it was lame

djKENTO

also it was Drew Barrymore on the cover. in fact it’s one of the greatest hollywood bait and switches ever. She’s on all the marketing. There’s a poster of everyone in profile and Drew is the biggest. The opening was also used in nearly every trailer. So when she dies it was genuinely shocking for everyone who saw it.

Martin

Meh, Cabin In The Woods did it much, much better.

djKENTO

seconded. New Nightmare is the only movie in the franchise other than the original that I think is any good. It’s also a precursor to this with how meta-textual it is.

droodly

This was great. During your southpark video, you noticed a poster above Satan and Saddam's bed and wondered who that was. It was Skeet Ulrich, Simone's new creepy cute crush. Also in the way back mobile phone networks were called "cellular". Mobile phones were "cellular phones" or "cell phones". I'm not sure if the technology now is still technically cellular, but my fairly recent iPhone still has an option for cellular data? You guys make me feel old sometimes.. :P

Logan Kerlee

lmao, that end!! xD That was a great watchalong. I of course already watched this many years ago, back when it was new and I was 8 years old. Craziness! Big like that you both enjoyed this and recognize why we told you to wait! xD This movie's up there for me when it comes to horror movies. A classic for sure! lol, a classic that makes fun of the classics.

Elder Lyons

i think theyre laughing at the fact that people used the full word unnecessarily even though the short hand already existed. hell the characters even say Telephone instead of just Phone, and it was 1996 not 1896 haha.

Logan Kerlee

Scary Movie plays on many other horror franchises. I can't remember everything that's covered in the first one off the top of my head. I'll have to check it out and report back.

Orphan Crippler

Movies that Scary Movie Spoof are - Scream - I Know What You Did Last Summer - The Matrix - Halloween - The Sixth Sense - The Usual Suspects - The Shining - The Exorcist - Election - American Pie -Kazaam - The Blair Witch Project.. You can skip kazaam tho.. It's not really a horror movie unless you consider Shaquille o'neal trying to act "horror" then it's pretty scary

Odd Thomas

Scary Movie is a parody of a satire which never made any sense to me.

Odd Thomas

Something I just realised having seen this film a million times: (SPOILER OBVS)) Assuming Billy's plan had worked, wouldn't the cops be like 'if you were stabbed once in the hip why do you have 6 other holes in your shirt but no wounds on your chest? Also why are you covered in red corn syrup?" So they were never going to get away with it, lol

Śéáń

One thing I really like about this one (besides being a really fun movie overall) is just how human the killer is. Ghostface keeps being knocked back, or kicked, or struggle with a lock, or hit in the crotch with a beerbottle while chasing after the victims. It adds a nice scrambling energy to the whole thing, rather than an unstoppable force of nature a lot of that slashers often have their villains be.

FischerMax98

Very fun reaction. Any plans to continue with the next one?

Brandon Scott

The actor, Jamie Kennedy, playing Randy, screaming at the actress Jamie Lee Curtis playing. Laurie strode to look behind her is the most not-talked-about-meta-moment in this movie.

Grand Moff Slackin'

At the MTV movie awards back in the day Chris Rock was presenting and he introduced Johnny Depp as “the rich man’s Skeet Ulrich.”

Carl Noraas

Ok, for my money Scream 1, 2, and 4 are all equally great. It's hard to decide which one I prefer, honestly, they're all fantastic! Scream 3 never quite worked for me, it's the odd one out, but I definitely recommend seeing the first 4 movies (the Wes Craven ones) as one continuous arc. Scream 5 and 6 disappointed me hugely - boring IP cash grabs.

djKENTO

Wes sadly passed and couldn’t direct Scream 5 or 6. The reason 5 is called SCREAM is that it riffs on reboots and legacy sequels. It’s aware that it’s a stupid name. As for continuing the series… PLEASE DO. They’re not all perfect. I think 3 and 4 are mid-tier, but I think 5 is a brilliant resurrection of the series and 2 has some of my favorite moments.

Chase Lonnergan

Simone's "I can do a pretty good Batman" sounds exactly like Keeley's Roy Kent impression. And now you can't unhear it.

djKENTO

okay and for the last question: Scary Movie as a franchise spoofs SO MUCH. Honestly I think for the first one you’ll have probably picked up most of the references from what you’ve seen or through pop culture osmosis. It’s a fine comedy, but going through and watching a bunch of movies just to get the jokes… not necessarily worth it. Of course this is just my opinion.

Chris Servais

High energy. Fun red herring-ful mystery. Laughs. Killer soundtrack. And Neve Campbell's terrifically down-to-earth performance anchoring the otherwise larger-than-lifeness of everyone else. This series is just a five star recipe for a fantastic time. If you are questioning whether to add S2 to a future poll, I'd say hell yeah. Most of the series is excellent. S3 is the only one that fumbles (hard). Thanks for this, Cinebinge!

Tay Schumaker

Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer are the two main ones. And it will ruin the ending of The Usual Suspects. The rest of the references are pretty minor.

Truth

Watch the Scream 2 and The Blair Witch Project before watching Scary movie. You shouldnt have any issues after that.

Dazzler & Em

Have to give credit to George as he did guess that there was 2 killers and also Simone has a great reaction to the last jump scare.

DM DC

I would see the Usual Suspects if you haven't seen that. Also as far as the Scream Franchise, I would watch them all. They are all fun. Scream from 2022, is what is referred to as a soft-reboot. It is still in the continuity of the original movies (has the same characters and stuff) but also starts with new chararacters. From 5 and on. I would watch those too. They are good.

Tenn Seven

She opened the garage door a little and closed it just to turn the garage light on so she could see where she was going. Good Batman!

Rob Parry

One funny moment I don't think mentioned here that I remember getting a laugh out of the audience when I saw this in the theater was the Obnoxious Reporter that asks Sidney how she feels about almost being killed when Dewey drops her off at school. That reporter was Linda Blair the little girl from the Exorcist in an uncredited appearance.

Ph4ZeD

Loved all the screams from Simone :D Maybe do Scary Movie next, perhaps I'm a child but I find it very funny!

sarCC

YAY!!! Happy you managed to get this in before so quick! Scream 2 is OK(but does contain one of the best, most tense scenes ever), Scream 3 is Cinecringe worthy, Scream 4 is surprisingly good, with two great performances from new cast members. 5cream and Scream 6 are really good, mostly because the new cast of regulars are all great characters with great actors behind them.

Keith Jones

The first time I watched this movie I was happy to see Matthew Lillard and said "Cool, it's Cereal Killer"...how right I was.

TGrimace

When George said "What if there's two killers?", my heart sank. I thought for sure he was going to figure it all out halfway through the movie. I was so thrilled when he dismissed his own thought and didn't bring it up again. Definitely continue with the franchise. I think it's worth it!

Brendan Rafferty

Scary Movie is unfunny. You mentioned Airplane. Airplane was a spoof of the “Airport” franchise films of the 70’s and had some great original humor. Scary Movie was, unfortunately, one of those spoof films that just thinks recreating scenes from horror movies is all you need and the jokes will write themselves. They did not.

JokerDanny

You definitely have to watch the rest.

Ballsac McGee

I know you guys watched Friday the 13th to get an idea of slasher tropes before you watch scream but you didn't really need to because this movie is basically a rip off of halloween. In fact, I think you should've watched psycho because I think that would be better preparation for scream. Furthermore, if you're gonna watch the friday the 13th movies, I think you need to watch more of the franchise because you haven't actually experienced the actual draw of the franchise, which is jason himself. The jason we all know and love doesn't show up until part 4, the final chapter, which imo is the quintessential friday the 13th movie. It took the filmmakers that long to figure the character out. and then 6 is the first one that shows us jason as this horror icon. I don't think jason would be as recognizable and as ubiquitous in horror pop culture without 4 and 6 so you should definitely check those out if you want to continue with the franchise. 2 is pretty good too, especially the ending but it's got the same problem that all of the earlier movies have which is they are extremely aimless and formulaic, and jason just keeps killing them one at a time. 3 is the worst movie ever made, 5 is one of the trashiest movies ever made. It's a taste thing but depending on your capacity for sleaze, you might enjoy 5. 7 is also really lame and for the first 2 thirds of the movie because it's the same, wandering around aimlessly with the teens getting picked off one by one. 7 also suffers from interference from the MPAA who forced the filmmaker to remove the gore and violent bits which is the whole fucking reason people watch these movies. It's also especially disappointing because 7 has the coolest ideas for kills, you can tell from the set ups but the pay off is always deleted. However 7 is redeemed by an awesome ending, probably the most exciting of any of these movies. 8 is again trash but has a few cool set pieces. 9 is an ok horror movie on its own but it's a terrible friday the 13th movie. jason x is a big joke, no one takes that movie seriously. Depending on your mileage, that movie is either really funny or really embarrassing, or both. Either way, that's my guide to friday the 13th. I def think you should check out 4 and 6, even in isolation, maybe even 2 because I think you are missing out on what this franchise and what jason as a horror icon is all about without those movies. It's not like the continuity matters anyway because they keep retconning and adding new crap to the lore that makes no sense to the timeline or the story.

Monica Alarcon

Just watch I Know What You Did Last Summer and you're good for Scary Movie... I would say "watch The Haunting so you can watch Scary Movie 2" but The Haunting is a terrible movie so skip it... You're good for Scary Movie 3 though...

Pearl Jam

The main ones you’d need to see before Scary Movie are Scream 2 and I Know What You Did Last Summer. You’ve already seen some of the other big ones, but honestly, there are just so many that it’s fine if you don’t watch everything it references. I still haven’t seen everything they spoof and I’ve seen Scary Movie so many times.

ScotchBeard78

Please, please do the whole Scream series. They get more meta, and some are better than others, but all of them are a good time and definitely worth watching.

Jonah

So, off your assumption/guess in the beginning about the movie being in a universe where those movies exist, I'm not sure if you meant "they exist as movies" or if you meant "the movies were based on real events in that universe". Therefore led me to need to recommend a movie. 'Behind the mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon', is a movie where those killers from all the classic tales, were actual serial killers of whos tale was told and embellished a bit through film. Jason, Freddie, Michael Myers, were all real stories. It's an incredible and SUPER unique movie it has comedy, classic slasher, suspense, twists, it's a bit of a mockumentary, some first person camera work like Cloverfield, and Blair witch. VERY well done. And all SUPER realistic. I love the movie, but it's not well known so it probably wouldn't win a pole if it were against classic and loved movies. But you guys REALY should check it out. You'd really enjoy it, and you might help get a bunch of people to find an old mid 2000's GEM. It's not as meta and self-aware/comedy based as scream but scream is probably the closest thing I could think of to compare it to genre wise.

Jonah

how dare you guys spoil the ending to a 1970s movie in your reaction video to another movie. for shame.

Cincassette

You guys should definitely continue this franchise!! Like "Final Destination" there are certainly some worse instalments, but they are all fun and worth watching, and their meta exploration of movie tropes is consistently entertaining. The first time I binged through these movies it was almost like playing bingo with the filmmakers for me, in terms of how they were gonna twist and play with the tropes. The recent revival of the franchise is also excellent!

Middy

Scream is definitely one of the few franchises that manages to stay fun the entire way through. You really grow attached to the characters and the constant throwbacks and references (both to its own franchise and other movies) keep things interesting. The fact they're still managing to throw new twists into the formula they started almost 30 years ago is impressive. Personally, I'd call Scream 3 the weakest point as it was affected by major script changes and a whole lot of Hollywood bureaucracy due to events that happened in real life. It's a lot more tame than the others and it shows, but it's still a good watch. Just don't make the mistake of thinking that once the quality dips, they're going to stay like that, the newer movies got enough of a positive reception to have their sequels greenlit almost immediately.

akaTheBARON

🖤It's funny how Drew Barrymore was practically the poster child for this movie but people were surprised she was only in the very beginning. It wasn't a super tiny part or anything but the marketing made it seem like she was going to be a major character throughout the movie LOL.

akaTheBARON

🖤Been a while since I've seen the sequels, and haven't seen the newer two. So I can't give any tips on whether any of the sequels spoil other horror movies. But I would definitely be cautious. Imagine if you didn't get warned about Friday the 13th before watching this LOL. If you start watching the sequels and put them on a poll, you're covered because people will warn you in the comments. If you plan on watching them as your personal picks, I would maybe make a post that you're planning to watch Scream 2 soon, and ask viewers if it's super spoiler-heavy just to play it safe. Maybe people have already brought you up to speed (or speed 2) on Scream 2 spoilers, IDK. But just something to think about.

Mitchell Bowker

All the SCREAM films are at least good and worth watching. Also, another Horror film you need to watch before seeing the Scary Movie spoof film is I KNOW WHAT YOU DID LAST SUMMER.

China Andronicus

You should definitely add Psycho to the list, if you haven't seen it. It's an amazing film and while this definitely didn't ruin it for you, you'll appreciate it's usage in this film far more once you've seen it. As far as the rest of the Scream series goes, most of them hold up pretty well until the most recent entries. Those last two are just decent, but as a whole it's a pretty damn good series.

Chase Schleich

Scream is the very rare series where every sequel is good. Everyone has their favorites, but there's not really a bad film in the series. The latest 2 are requels (you'll get the definition in the films themselves) and in my opinion are the best of the series since the original.

Chase Schleich

Get through Scream 2 before watching Scary Movie. I believe Scary Movie came out after Scream 2 so it parody's both. Oh and as someone else mentioned, you still need to see I Know What You Did Last Summer, which Simone will LOVE because it has Sarah Michelle Geller (Buffy in Buffy the Vampire Slayer) in it.

FranciscoGios

Okay now we can say you guys are on track for slasher/suspense/ thriller/horror movies, can you guys check “I Know What You Did Last Summer” (1997) 😎 before you guys continue with the Scream franchise. As for A Nightmare in Elm street my favorites are part 3,4 and Wes Craven’s A New Nightmare(1994); there’s also a 2010 movie of Krueger but I don’t remember that one as much.

Grandalf

You guys might not have recognized Mathew Lillard, who played Stu, but he's been a guest on Critical Role and he's an avid DnD fan.

akaTheBARON

🖤The janitor "Freddy" was played by Wes Craven. Not sure if ya'll caught that or if anyone's pointed that out already.

Readster

Some of the jokes in Scary Movie have aged very poorly but I still think there's a lot of fun stuff in it

Jay

Scream is comfort viewing for me, I could watch this film on Christmas Day. Looking forward to this. Skeet Ulriich, who plays Billy, was the guy in the poster above Satan's bed in South Park. Big heartthrob back in the 90s, my first girlfriend also had posters of him on her wall:)

Patrick

I hadn't seen it in ages, but I recently re-watched it and still think it's a fun movie. The constant gay jokes from (one of) the Wayans guys gets pretty old though. Not really offensive or anything, it just becomes hacky at a certain point.

Patrick

"Jamie, turn around..behind you!" The actor's name is Jamie Kennedy haha

Vincent Arfeux

I think Scream was a bit like a parody/hommage of slasher movies. And then Scary movie was a parody of a parody. But Scream 2 and 3 are still very good, even 4.

REDR58

Neve Campbell was 23 at the time Scream was filmed, Drew Barrymore was 21. Rose McGowan (Tatum) was 19. Not THAT far off from high schoolers.

sheriffjt

I think the highest rated one has a 50% from Rotten Tomatoes, the lowest has a 4%. Really not a franchise worth the effort...

REDR58

George as far as “Tatum“ being a woman’s name, probably the most famous woman in Hollywood named Tatum, is Tatum O’Neill, who won an Oscar at age 10 for the movie “Paper Moon” which was released in 1973. She also was in “Sex and the City” so Simone might recognize the name.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

I’d say Leatherface from the Texas Chainsaw series already fits that role though. Admittedly I’ve yet to see the series past the initial 2 and the 2000s reboots, but he’s a fairly grounded slasher with believable skills, strengths and weaknesses. To add, TCM, Night of the Living Dead and the later entry of Scream 4 are some excellent examples of how underappreciated horror films are as social commentaries.

Jacob King

Yeah, Billy is less obviously the killer in context of his 90s celebrity image.

Jacob King

There was a famous murder case in the 1920s where two wealthy teens murdered a neighbour kid without a motive, Léopold and Loeb, Billy and Stu are based on that archetype. The moral panic pendulum in America swings between “save the children”/satanic panic/stranger danger and super predators/gangs/kids today are alien monsters. The big difference between the 80s and 90s slashers was in the 80s parents were freaked out about outsiders coming into their nice suburbs and in the 90s parents were scared that there was something wrong with their own kids. Gale, as a tabloid reporter, slips this fear into the final shot of the movie talking about how Woodsboro is far away from the crime and danger of the big city. Scary Movie is probably more notable for kicking off the second wave of spoof movies in the same way as Scream kicked off the second wave of slashers. Most of the humour is references to recent pop culture. It’ll definitely spoil that one Budweiser commercial or whatever…

Lola Lirola

Of the trashy, campy, Kevin Williamson-like teen horror movies of this era, a great forgotten one is Urban Legend (and sequels) I recommend adding it to the list!

Oliver piercey

You guys gotta watch scary movie now , it's hilarious

Gary Fixler

The company that made the mask made some $$$ https://www.slashfilm.com/637496/the-origin-of-the-ghostface-mask-in-scream-is-delightfully-mundane/ > the mask was not created for "Scream," it was an existing costume mask sold by a company called Fun World and designed by a woman named Brigitte Sleiertin. "Scream" screenwriter Kevin Williamson had this to say about finding the mask: > "No one could agree on a mask and I remember we were in a location scout, and we found Ghostface... in a box of stuff in a garage... Wes [Craven] immediately looked at it and said, 'This is like the famous Scream painting.' And so we took that to our production and we said, 'Riff on this... make something like this.' They must've done 20 different designs. Every one of them was rejected by the studio, and finally we were like, why don't we just get the rights to this mask?" > The mask was created in 1991 as part of the Fun World "Fantastic Faces" collection, and Dimension Films was able to reach an agreement to use the mask. This proved extremely profitable for Fun World, who owns both the mask design and the name "Ghostface." Since the production of "Scream" in 1996, the Ghostface mask has become the most worn and sold costume for Halloween in the United States. Yes, that does include that awesome blood-pumping Ghostface mask we all owned in the early 2000s.

David Crabtree

Scary Movie (2000) heavily spoofs Scream, Scream 2, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Usual Suspects, as well as other things like The Blair Witch Project, The Matrix, and Dawson's Creek.

KnittingHaven

Just wanted to add my vote to you watching all of the Scream movies. As much as you liked this first one, I think you will enjoy all of them. Some are better than others, of course, but they are all a lot of fun as well as being pretty good slasher films. I also like all of the I Know What You Did Last Summer films, if you ever start that series.

Foodassassin4life

Linda Blair was in the movie as the reporter that came up and asked "So How Does It Feel To Be Almost Brutally Butchered?" When Dewey is dropping off the girls at school.

Max Krause

I would add to that that not all of those movies are spoilered in Scary Movie. The Scary Movies series always takes the main plot of 1-2 movies (which are therefore spoilered), but only references scenes from the other movies. In Scary Movie 1's case that's Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. So definitely watch the latter first. For example, I watched Scary Movie before The Usual Suspects. It didn't spoil it for me, I just went "Oh that's where they got that from" when I finally saw TUS.

Katrina Richelle

So happy about this reaction and I think all the Screams should be watched just because! I admit I am a Scream 3 apologist but it holds a special place in my heart because for some reason I saw it first as a child, not as scary as the others, you do need to suspend your belief (more than a little) but it unexpectedly hilarious and entertaining...to me.

Princess Mia

god i love this movie so much its CINEMA!

Princess Mia

and george you're absolutely right about real life true crime being inspired by movies, in fact there was a true crime case where the killers were inspired by THIS movie which is crazy ironic

Kevin Bartelen

Scary Movie does a bunch of movies, but primarily is focuses on Scream and I Know What You Did Last Summer. With the remaining spoofs being more of a comedic reference so I would say you only need to make sure you've also seen I Know What You Did Last Summer

Choi_Yujin_Stan_Account

I think all the Screams are worthwhile...I personally wouldn't' skip any of them

Tanx

MrBallen did a video about the events that inspired Scream as did as a few other youtuber true crime folk. it was a real life serial killer in Florida that killed a bunch of college students. The Gainsville Ripper(had to look up his real name, Daniel Rolling). I believe it was more the atmosphere that the killer created in the community that inspired the screenplay rather than how he actually killed his victims, but he did stab his victims to death and he did some other stuff I won't go into detail about that could be similarish. guy was an absolutely horrible evil being. Also the way they promoted the movie was such a great idea. Drew Barrymore was going to be the lead and it was going to be the type of slasher people expected. Drew being the front and center of the poster and the big part of the trailer, then 5 minutes in...boom she's dead. saw this movie multiple times in the theater. that reaction from the audience was worth the price of admission. Got the VHS the day it came out. And I wasn't even a big slasher or horror fan, usually was led to watch them with all my friends at sleepovers late at night when the parents went to bed. Scream was just so different. Also, pretty much all the Scream movies are worth the watch, especially after 3(3 was the low point, but I enjoy it more going back and watching it now that I don't have the high expectations I had after 1 and 2). But watching a few other popular 80s slashers will add to the references and stuff. The in universe lore for this series grows pretty big. As for Scary Movie references: Scream, I Know What You Did Last Summer, The Exorcist, The Shining, The Blair Witch Project, American Pie, The Usual Suspects, Halloween, The Sixth Sense....can't really think of any others. been forever since I watched it but I remember most of the big jokes. Pretty sure there is more, but think those are the biggest ones. For Scream 2 I would watch a couple Halloween movies(1 and 2 probably enough), and maybe a couple others. But Halloween is kind of the big one for slashers that follow standard tropes. Nightmare on Elm St 1 and 2 is another. there are several movies referenced, a lot of non-horror popular movies as well, but they mainly do it in a way you can understand without seeing them. the main point is just to understand what horror/slasher movies tend to do in sequels compared the first movies. those two will honestly give you plenty to go on for what it's worth. I mean it's not necessary but just adds a bit of humor and helps when looking at motives. oh also Tori Spelling is the actress Sidney said would probably play her if they made a movie about her life and basically was saying it in a very negative way. she is the daughter of Aaron Spelling(famous producer-90210, Charlie's Angels and a few other big shows) she wanted to act and she was cast in 90210(huge teen drama from the 90s). a lot of people just thought she was only cast in anything because of her dad and she wasn't a good actress. kinda like a spoiled "my daddy is important so I get to be in this movie." type reputation. I'm not really sure since I didn't really watch her in anything, but there was kind of a negative connotation to being compared to her as an actress.

An Inanimate Fucking Object

Lol you guys missed that the guy screaming "Jamie, he's behind you" is, in fact, Jamie Kennedy

Truth

I recommend watching I know what you did last summer, Scream 2 and The Blair Witch Project before Scary movie if you want to get all the jokes and references.

Poddington

By the time Scream came out horror movies weren't very popular. They were cliche and tired and with the rise of CGI and higher budget blockbusters many fell flat. Wes Craven wanted to update horror movies and had some success with Wes Craven's New Nightmare a couple of years before Scream. This was updating Nightmare on Elm Street and was fairly successful, but still seemed to be a last gasp of a dying genre. This is why I think Scream really works. Wes turned the genre on it's head. It played into the tropes and cliches and did something new. It let audiences feel like they solved the puzzle only to flip it and then flip it again. "Oh the Boyfriends the killer, obviously." oh he didn't do it... "oh the boyfriends the killer obviously" oh he's just been killed... "oh wait the boyfriend IS the killer. It's very self aware and knows that you know all tricks and it doesn't shy away from thos tricks and puts them out there for all to see and yet still keeps you guessing until the end.

Poddington

Answering the question on Scary movie... With Scary Movie I would say the same thing I'd say to most parody movies. You'll only get 80% to 90% of the jokes and you'll be lucky if half are actually funny and that's ok! Scary Movie started a trend and anything after Scary Movie 2 is awful, but in terms of referencing other films there are many you likely wouldn't have seen. I'll post the movies it pardodies below: I Know What You Did Last Summer - Main Parody and itself is a really good film. You should see this before watching it. Scream - Main parody as well Scream 2 Scream 3 The 6th Sense - I don't know if you have seen this, but this film doesn't spoil anything. You'd just likely not get the reference and move on. The Blair With Project - This film is terrible and the parody is gross. I wouldn't bother watching this film, but it did start the trend of shakey cam low budget films that led to films like Paranormal Activity so there is that... Halloween - I mean you can't have a parody without the scream queen classic Friday the 13th - Personal favourite of the main horror franchises, you've seen this one anyway :) The Shining - It doesn't spoil this movie so if you don't watch this first you'll just get the reference when you do. The Matrix - So. Many. Films. did bullet time, because of the matrix. This movie does too. It's so fucking funny though. Like the killer in Scary Movie and the way they move is hillarious. Doesn't spoil the Matrix though. The Usual Suspects - I would say if you haven't seen this watch it first. While the reference without context wouldn't spoil the movie, the part it does parody is such a huge cinema moment it'd be a crime not to see how it was done first. Psycho - The reference is from near the start of the film if i remember correctly, but for how Psycho starts this moment was quite a surprise and again it'd be a shame not to see it done the original way. Candyman - I don't recall the reference, but this film is one of the only horror films that creeps me out just thinking about it. It's such a great film.

Nice post...but I'd have to strongly disagree on The Blair Witch Project... I get that it is a very polarizing film...some hate it but also many do love it...I respect if you feel like it is terrible but hope you realize and can acknowledge many do not feel that way (myself included)... I've never requested because I acknowledge it isn't the best film to watch on streaming...but it was a wonderfully fun shared experience in the cinema. I also felt Paranormal Activity was such fun as a shared experience in the cinema and less so on streaming but it is what it is.

I feel like I need to send Wes Craven a Christmas card this year just for the gift he gave us of Simone' face after the last jump scare. I haven't laughed that hard in a good while. That face needs to go into the dictionary next to "f--- right off". ;)

This is my favorite horror movie franchise by far! Most horror movie franchises them have a good amount of stinkers or ones that I would skip, but this one is so fucking solid. Even the lesser films of this franchise are still solid fun movies. Even the new ones! My favorites are probably 1,2, & 5 but honestly I like all of them!

Glass (+ the Machines of God)

That's a terrible batman, and if your cat has trouble jumping up either you need help or that cat does

Donna Castellano

So many people crap on Scream 4 but it's my second favorite after the original. I tend to skip when reaction channels hit Scream 3. I just don't care for it. The behind the scenes chaos is heavily on display the entire movie.

Forget Cabin in the Woods making fun of the tropes, THIS movie is making fun of them. Scream is a spoof.
