Rash Bandicoot

Hell yea! I saw this in theaters and downloaded it right when it became available. I have been waiting to rewatch with y'all. Thank you!

Tay Schumaker

Had a feeling this one was coming today. Glad you worked your way through all these. Been a fun rewatch

Spacedone

Just to continue the 'running on top of a train' theme, check out The First Great Train Robbery (I think it's just called The Great Train Robbery in the US and maybe Canada) which has Sean Connery doing all the stunt work himself and apparently nearly died while filming it.

Odd Thomas

If you can get past the hilariously 90s representation of A.I. and just enjoy the smashy smashy action, it's a lot of fun.

Odd Thomas

I want to see a Tom Cruise film where he *finally* does some of his own stunts. Lazy ass Tom Cruise.

Logan Nelson

Considering some of the breakthroughs in the past year or so, this doesn't seem plausible? ☺️

christopher b swanson

I feel like the odd person out........im 52, love Cruise, love this series, started within the theater in 96, hated part 2, and loved the rest.................I really didn't enjoy this movie that much, it is The Spectre of MI, it is boring, paced slow as hell, the opening credits take 28 mins to get to, no good opening, every scene drags, way too much talking, and poor set up of why I should care, they kill off the best character and the new chick is the least interesting worst actor ever...................fall out was 9.5 for me.............this movie is a 4 maybe, it made me check my watch, and I think the big stunt was not very good, the cgi add on made it look fake, and after the hype, it just wasn't a thing.............I hope the announcement to push 2nd one to 2025 will help them fix and correct course................my 2nd least fav of series and not worth a rewatch.......

droodly

Not sure if you noticed this stuff, but Kitteridge was one of the "villains" in the first MI movie who was chasing Ethan the whole time. He was also the one to arrest Max (the white widows mom) at the end of that first movie and presumably make a deal with her. Explains why Kitteridge would comment on knowing the widow as a child. I love that they add these details.

Tay Schumaker

This probably is the weakest story wise. Like it seems to make stuff up to fit the story that doesn’t mesh with the rest of the series. Like all the sudden the IMF is some secret thing that the head of the intelligence networks doesn’t know about? They literally had senate hearings about it in another movie. Why is Ethan so attached to Grace so fast. All the sudden there is a hidden past that got Ethan in the IMF? The IMF is made up of all ex criminals that were given a choice? It’s a lot of retconning. But it’s still a lot of fun

REDR58

I’ll be really annoyed if that certain death isn’t somehow undone in the next part.

Tay Schumaker

Also Hayley Atwell is 20 years younger than Cruise in real life (62 and 42). But I’m not sure if they’ve ever established Ethan is as old as Cruise is

Tenn Seven

Wow, this movie was pretty terrible. Glad I watched it with you guys though.

REDR58

Max is also of course briefly mentioned by the White Widow at her fundraiser thing when Hunt enters the room.

John Lambert

Are you gonna watch Lethal weapon 3 and 4 at some point? Been ages since you watched the second one.

UNC

How many more movies are there? Looking forward to something else soon!

REDR58

This is the last of the existing Mission Impossible movies that are available for at least a year or more.

REDR58

Excellent choice and a fun movie. It came out in 1978 and was directed by Michael Crichton.

Odd Thomas

Hayley Atwell being his daughter would be a great twist. They are both pickpockets, both wear similar outfits on the train etc, but it would be hell of a coincidence they bumped into each other for this mission

Logan Nelson

Alanna is Max's daughter who was the "Buyer" in the first movie where they stole the list from Kittridge...

Jared Winn

For those that didn’t catch the reference in the last movie, the White Widow’s mother is Max (Vanessa Redgrave), the person with info on the NOC list in the first movie. And Kittridge was the agent assigned to bring Ethan in after the initial heist. Ethan blew up the aquarium and got away. Nice way to connect the original movie back to the present day, especially with how far we’ve come from a simple heist movie.

Jared Winn

I like the theory that Ethan is Grace’s father but I don’t think that Cruise is the type of guy to play his age. Atwell is in her 40s so I don’t think that they’d play her as younger than 30, but maybe they will. I also believe that Ethan is the type of guy that will give his life for anyone that doesn’t deserve to die, regardless of how important they are to him. He puts himself in between guns and civilians often, but maybe that’s just how I’m interpreting it. I guess I don’t have proof my way either.

Samuel Bruce

Love all of the Mission Impossibles, each are amazing in their own way, just sucks that the actors strike has delayed the next movie, but patience is the key. Also if we’re electing runaway train movies I nominate Unstoppable starring Denzel Washington and Chris Pine, to continue the “Denzel train”. And maybe that leads to a Chris Pine Star Trek train…….

Odd Thomas

Watching it again it is too long, the whole Kittrich gas scene didn't need to be 10 minutes. Same with the airport scene. The entity is also pretty silly. But it's still a fun popcorn movie for me.

Shane Driscoll

This is my 3rd time seeing the movie, and I still laughed at the reveal that The Entity threw the party. Meaning a rogue AI went through the trouble of hiring performers to grind up against each other while wearing skin-tight leotards. Also, the scene where Vanessa Kirby plays Haley Atwell playing Vanessa Kirby is maybe the best acting moments in the entire franchise.

Shane Driscoll

My own half-baked theory is that she was originally supposed to be Thandiwe Newton's character from MI:2, but she backed out at the last minute due to all the COVID-chaos that (literally) plagued the film's production, so they had to slot in Haley Atwell.

Monica Alarcon

LOL, me and Simone saying "the greater good" at the same time was awesome... (I always repeat it when I hear it because of Hot Fuzz)

Lola Lirola

Me too!! Also, every time I hear "good luck", I complete "...and *don't* fuck it up" because of RuPaul's Drag Race 😂

Superpotroast

Well, the Entity hired her, and the Entity would know if she was his daughter, so not so much of a stretch.. But I'd rather they not do the daughter thing..

ChickensAreRacist

I’m happy for the viewers able to get immersed and enjoy this constant cartoon of a franchise. It’s fun!

djKENTO

“She’s very young”… homie all the women in this movie are 35-40 years old hahah

djKENTO

Don’t know if y’all picked up on this yet or not. The White Widow is the daughter of the arms dealer Max from the very first film. This is why Kittridge knows her mom and her. Their deal and exchange, also on a famous train.

REDR58

Yep, Rebecca Ferguson is currently 40, Hayley Atwell is 41, Vaness Kirby is 35, Pom Klementieff is 37 and Mariela Garriga is 34. Subtract a year or 2 to account for when the movie was filmed.

Travis

I like this movie overall but I will say, seeing this a second time now, one thing that still holds true for me is that some of the exposition scenes are really poorly written. I don’t know what kind of restrictions they were dealing with due to this being shot right in the middle of the most challenging times of covid, but in multiple exposition scenes alt he characters sit very still in very purposeful, semi unrealistic distance from one another. They then proceed to just take turns reading sections one giant monologue that takes no time or effort to translate it through their personal lense. I think there were probably a lot of challenges making this “entity” villain come to life but there was definitely a lot more clunkiness in the written of this film in comparison to the others IMO. Great reaction as always guys.

Jake Dinkel

The studio is blaming the "part 1" in the title for the low box office. They feel that it caused people to think they could just wait until part 2 comes out and watch both at once.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Okay not gonna lie, I enjoyed the previous movies but I wasn't super into them, but this one feels like a payoff, I really liked it. Especially the writing and the concept, very Matrixy to me, AI is the one thing that kind of terrifies me lol (I'm actually a little terrified the Entity is reading this right now, just kidding my overlord 🥹), can't wait to see where they go with this. I thought Pom Klementieff was especially good in this, hope she gets more roles, she's got range. I will say I was a little disappointed in Esai Morales as Gabriel, I know he's a good actor, he's always been great at projecting intensity. For a long time he was Bob from the movie La Bamba to me, and then he kind of disappeared for a while, showing up again as a great villain in Ozark, he's much more intimidating in that. Btw Ozark is a great show, I challenge you to watch that first episode and see if you aren't hooked, very Breaking Bad like, and Jason Bateman and Laura Linney are fantastic together, and of course Julia Garner, she's amazing.

sarCC

Yay! You're all caught up now! Great time to watch the espionage comedy SPY, starring Melissa McCarthy and Rose Byrne, one of this century's best comedies!

Mitchell Bowker

I didn't interpret Ethan saying he cares for her and will put her life ahead of his own having anything to do with Grace being a love interest or daughter. He only just met her and if she was his daughter, he'd have no way of knowing. I saw it more about her becoming a part of the IMF (he was trying to recruit her talking about making a choice), and as a member of his team he will put their life before his life, as he has shown in past movies.

Jacob King

It’s also made clear in the previous movie that the white widow is an American asset

Jacob King

At the start you were asking about Chris McQuarrie and his relationship with Cruise and at the end you asked at what point the franchise shifted into one overarching narrative. McQuarrie and Cruise first worked together on the movie Valkyrie, at that time and for the majority of his career all Cruise movies were Cruise/Wagner productions. Part of hiring Tom Cruise to be the star of your movie meant hiring Cruise’s business partner Paula Wagner as a producer. Her job was making sure all the behind the scenes stuff was to Cruise’s liking; scripts, casting, scheduling, locations etc. When she retired after Valkyrie she and Cruise asked McQuarrie to take on that roll as manager/confidant/creative collaborator hence the exclusive relationship. The Mission Impossible films are the main product of this relationship. Two incredibly wealthy and powerful middle aged men who love stunts and spy movies, who want to travel all over the world having crazy adventures, are making these films primarily for their own benefit. Tom wants to fly a helicopter so Chris writes him a helicopter chase. They want to go to Venice so they design a scene that’ll show off as much of Venice as possible. If they weren’t both great at what they do it wold be gross but I personally think it’s what makes the series work so well and feels different from their competitors. They’re big budget studio pictures with an auteur sensibility.

Brendan Rafferty

Sorry. This one ties with MI:2 for the stupidest of the franchise. ***SPOILERS BELOW*** ▪️Cary Elwes character telling the bad guy only he knows the location of the submarine, after they both agree that they want no one to know, defies common sense ▪️Luther trying to hack into satellites from his laptop like a hacker in a bad 80’s film, furiously clickety clacking away at his keyboard, complaining that the A.I. entity is shutting down access faster than he can mash his keyboard… no shit… just minutes earlier the villain states that the A.I. can perform a thousand quadrillion tasks per second… so yeah Luther trying to keep up is fucking stupid. ▪️recruiting Hayley Atwell’s character because she’s some great thief… yet she is caught every time…. And the movie shows that her character is wanted by interpol for multiple thefts, essentially showing she is actually a horrible thief because authorities always know it’s her. ▪️oh and suddenly Ethan Hunt falls for her just because the writers need that to happen but clearly don’t know how to make it make sense. ▪️if the A.I. is concerned that Ethan Hunt is the only threat to it because Hunt is the only one who wants to destroy it… why toy with Hunt by making him choose who dies? Why not simply order the villain to kill Hunt. Or otherwise kill Hunt countless other ways? ▪️the two CIA agents looking for Hunt just randomly deciding to crash a party in Venice and running into him. ▪️Killing Rebecca Ferguson’s character Ilsa Faust the way they did. We have seen from previous films that Ilsa is a super trained badass fighter. Bad guy has a switchblade… she has a friggin sword… and she loses???? Buuuuullshit

silverarrow06

Well said. I had the same thoughts after I had seen it. Of course we have to wait for part 2 for a final rating, but so far it is indeed the weakest MI movie together with MI:2. 🤔

Brendan Rafferty

George… Early in the reaction commentary, you recognized Indira Varma as having played Niobe on HBO’s Rome. While I’m glad you’ve seen that amazing show… it’s disheartening to know that having already seen Rome means we will never get to see you and Simone react to it. 🙁

Truth

I really like this film like i likes all the others. Its not my favourite but a definite fun filled sequel.

Ted K. had a point

As a huge MI fan, the new MI was a huge disappointment for me. Second worst in the franchise, after MI 2 or maybe worst. SPOILERS AHEAD: Didn't like the new female character played by Hayley Atwell, didn't like her acting, didn't like the bad guy (who looks like a mean fashion mogul from France) and his wooden monologues, the plot was really confusing compared to the other films, they suddenly introduced things out of Ethan's past that have never been mentioned, some of the CGI is dead obvious (unlike in earlier MI films where it's very well done), the old team was pushed to the sidelines in favor of this new annoying thief character by Atwell. She betrays Ethan several times for petty gains, Ethan has no reason to respect her as much as he suddenly does. The car chase in the yellow car was just goofy in a bad way. Didn't like the female henceman either, trying too hard to be edgy. Even some of the stunts were boring (fight on a rooftop of a train, very original) and the better ones had been spoiled in the Behind The Scenes footage. Even the motorcycle jump (however amazing in real life) looked bad because the CGI cliff they used to replace the IRL ramp, would have crashed him instantly. His bike can't gather speed on a surface like that. The worst scene must be the one at the club, where they have some kind of weird staring contest, it was meant to build tension, but it was ridiculous and didn't work at all. I also despise them for killing off one of the best characters (Ilsa Faust) who dies really easily. To make room for this new stupid thief by Atwell. Also the way how the beloved comedic relief, Benji, was pushed to the sidelines, he had almost no funny lines or moments. Everything was done so that this stupid Atwell with her bad acting could take the spotlight. She looks like she's about to laugh in every scene, even when they're supposed to be dramatic. Very weird acting. Even if she has a nice face, she has no place in this franchise. Can't believe TC messed this so badly, after four excellent MI movies and Top Gun. Maybe it was a Covid thing In the end, I started just ignoring the silly plot, and waiting for the stunts. The AI theme is very current and in theory a good idea, but the execution wasn't. Maybe Part II will be better and tie it together somehow, but I'm not holding my breath.

Shreddy

I agree, except with the lot of fun part. It was a nooze fest. The stunts are great as always, but they are a small portion of the runtime, and everyone probably saw them already in the teaser footage.

Chris B

Maybe I wouldn't be this harsh but I kinda agree with everything. I would also add that I miss the "spy" aspect of MI, smaller scenes built on tension, where an expert team executes a great plan. This has been more and more replaced by chaotic action and in this part started going into the "goofy" territory.

Angela D. Mitchell

Great reaction! And I'm with both of you -- they overdid Ethan's weird instant overintensity about Grace, who had done nothing but screw him over every.single.time. Overall, I was frustrated and a little confused by the writing choices in this. It's a handsomely produced movie as always and the performances were great. The stunts were of course fantastic. But oh, man, they really let the characters down! One of the things I've enjoyed about the progression of the series -- especially through the last 3 films -- was its increased and consistent focus on the characters and team. We had Ethan actually get a close genuine romance with Julia in MI:3 (who was awesome), and the movie showed how much he still cared for her in Ghost Protocol and Fallout too (knowing the relationship was over) while he also grew closer to Ilsa, who was seriously his female counterpart in so many ways. The end of Fallout was a nice way to show that Julia had finally moved on permanently -- and really heavily implied that Ethan/Ilsa would finally take the leap on a relationship together, and I was all for it. But the story structure here was just so weird. The first third (after the super-weird "La Femme Nikita" retcon, which I hated), we get the traditional team stuff, we get poor sweet Benji admitting he loves his friends more than anything else while melting down over the bomb/cypher, and Ethan as always does his best to save Ilsa at the last minute while also navigating Grace being an increasingly tiresome triple-crosser. I thought Benji's cypher/questionnaire was going to be the theme/subtext of the entire thing -- that it was a wonderful potential way to get to the hearts of these tough agents and reveal their hearts. And it kind of did that until the midpoint. In the middle section, the movie doubles down on Ilsa/Ethan, we get the hints of romance and the absolutely lovely sequence in Venice -- then suddenly the Gabriel standoff where Ethan looks all tortured at the idea of choosing between Grace and Ilsa (and later they are put on weirdly equal footing again when Ethan flashes to glimpses of each of them plus the girl from the prologue). Anyway, then it all goes off the rails. Poor Ilsa gets fridged (and I agree with everyone who found it weird and awkward and insulting to the character) and literally dies for her replacement female (Grace, who GOT HER KILLED). And Ethan and the team barely blink over Ilsa's loss and are instantly indoctrinating Grace into the team for her big mission. And then there's this instant weird overly intense pseudo-romance energy between Ethan and Grace for the rest of the movie, and I honestly just resented it. It felt forced and disrespectful. I mean, Jesus, Ilsa's body isn't even cold. For me, the odd thing is, aside from the first movie (ugh), I would say that romance has been very well handled across the series. I always believed Ethan's connections with his romance -- with Thandwe Newton in 2, with Julia in 3, the slight "almost-romance" (both of them grieving) with Paula Patton, and then his connection with Ilsa in Rogue Nation and Fallout (and again, without abandoning his bittersweet feelings for Julia, which I thought was such a nice touch). I've always felt like while the romantic aspect was usually not front and center in the series, it has been nicely handled overall, and there have been some nice moments as Ethan and his friends and flirtations managed the nihilism, shifting loyalties, and tensions of their work. I think the bummer is, this movie sort of started off pretty heavily implying that Ethan and Ilsa's three-movie slow burn would sort of be a focus or culmination here. We sort of got that -- it was implied that they were an actual item here, and the lovely little moment of intimacy in Venice implied that further. But Ethan's reaction to her death and afterward was such a misfire from Cruise -- I just didn't feel much from Ethan about the moment. And while I love Hayley Atwell, and she did a great job here overall, especially with a physically demanding role -- I just really did not like Grace. To echo George here, she screws Ethan over every single time they meet -- every -- single -- time! Why should he care so very much? It made no sense. Her entire storyline just consisted of her being kind of a jerk who double-/triple-crossed Ethan over and over again (even when it became increasingly clear that she was hindering him in a "Save the World" situation). And then of course directly resulting in Ilsa's death. So by the time we got the big train situation -- her reversal was too unbelievable to me. Suddenly she's remorseful and begging for support? Why should they trust her for a single moment? Despite the incredibly cool stunts and action sequences with the train at the end, I didn't feel any tension because I didn't care if Grace died or not (sorry, I know that's cold) -- and I knew that Ethan wouldn't. This was a big letdown for me. I thought Cruise brought his usual dynamism and energy, the stunts were amazing, and I loved the team at the beginning, but by the end, the movie had become the Grace Show and I just didn't care. I still can't believe they fridged Ilsa. Sloppy writing, and I don't forgive them. We'll see how Part 2 goes.

David Lonewolf Wright

I never thought of her as being his daughter, maybe the daughter of that woman killed by the "stabby guy" before he joined IMF... but being his daughter too could be interesting. I would also say that Ethen has routinely been identified as the person who would not sacrifice 1 for a million, so it could be just his natural instinct in a situation where an "innocent" has got themselves involved in something over their head. Funny thing about the title, they think the part 1 in the title impacted the box office performance, so they are dropping it and going with a different name... though at this point you would think leaving it as part 2 would be the draw as I believe the home sales and rental numbers have been pretty good.
