MY Island!! Cracker of a film.

Kangdarius

Great movie. Take nothing as fact though lol

Emptysea93

This is definitely a historically inaccurate film... but that doesnt make it any less fun. I think it is definitely better to view this as a fictional period piece like "The Last Samurai" as you mentioned. Its great fun, and an emotional story, and as one of my favorite philosophers (when summarized) says, never let the truth get in the way of a good story or a greater truth.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

This movie really showed that Mel Gibson is an outstanding director. To quote smarter folk than me: “Say what you want about Mel Gibson but the son of a bitch knows story structure.” Also this movie has a wonderful original score by the late great James Horner (RIP sir)

Michael

I’m here for the Steamed Hams shirt

Michael

What was particularly notable when watching this in theaters on release was how bloody the battle scenes were. There really wasn’t anything comparable in AAA films up until that point.

Anthony James Marshall

I am Scottish so this movie is massive here. We know it’s inaccurate but we don’t care. The funniest is that the big battle he wins was not in a field but on a giant wooden bridge so was a bit more epic

Anthony James Marshall

To give you an idea how big this was my great uncle who saw this in his 60’s in theatres loved it so much he was buried with merchandise from the film. That’s how loved it was in Scotland

MPH

Did you know this movie is not historically accurate?

Jeff K

One more pretty big inaccuracy: the Princess was a literal child in real life for most of the events of this movie. Like, she was 3 when the Battle of Falkirk was fought. So, the entire subplot between her and Wallace was fabricated and, given it’s a romance between a grown man and a person who, in real life, was a toddler kinda makes it a little ick too. (It’s still a highly entertaining and enjoyable film of course.)

Christina Doxstader

There are 2 major inaccuracies and the rest aren't terrible given what was known about Wallace's life at the time, The first thing is the princess, she was a small child during the events of the movie and obviously wouldn't have even met Wallace much less has an affair with him and the second is the battle of Stirling Bridge. While it was a major victory for Wallace and the Scots the actual battle took place on a bridge and not an open field.

Kamil Kydlicek

funny thing that you mention highlander because actress who plays princess was girlfriend of Christopher Lambert that played Highlander

Kron0n

Attacking force needs to have 3:1 advantage.

Joe Williams

I really enjoy Braveheart, but it definitely works best if you view it as very loosely-inspired historical fiction. Also you might have recognized Hamish's dad from Trainspotting, where he plays Renton's dad and from Game of Thrones as the commander of the Night's Watch.

jmundt33a

Sophie Marceau was gorgeous. Later a bond villainess

Lee Meehan

You know what's funny aswell it wasn't even filmed in Scotland, it was filmed in Glendalough Ireland. Still love the movie along as you treat it like fiction.

Byron Abrahams

The World Is Not Enough is my favourtie Brosnan Bond movie, purely because of Sophie Marceau.

Jacob Lantom

I've been to Scotland. Hit up Edinburgh and go drinking with a Scotsman. It's bucket list material

Lalalenski

I think "Apocalypto" is potentially the most underrated historical film (also Mel Gibson) well worth a watch

Lalalenski

Also Last of the Mohicans is incredible Daniel Day Lewis film!

Kangdarius

I remember watching this one David spade movie with her in it when I was a youth. She was like a harp player or some shit. There was a scene with her playing the instrument with a dress on with this looooong slit. Think I hit puberty that day.

HeyHeyJK

Absolutely agree. While they had to blend a few different eras of Mayan history, it's a remarkable film, and not at all a film that I would ever expect from Mel Gibson as a director.

James MacDonald

Can't wait until they get to my favourite scene where he goes "Rahhhhhh!"

HeyHeyJK

While it takes place a few centuries later, I prefer "Rob Roy" as a Scottish historical film. Starring Liam Neeson, Tim Roth, John Hurt, and Jessica Lange. Unlike "Braveheart", it was actually shot in Scotland and some locations could only be reached by helicopter, so the scenery is breathtaking much of the time.

Jeff K

Last of the Mohicans is amazing. And it has one of the best original scores ever.

Aaron Stinson

Y’all should watch the other films that Mel Gibson directed, including Passion of the Christ. That one’s a bit controversial, but still worth a watch for its cultural and historical significance, religious or not.

Thomas Hilbert

Great reaction! But please don't to the camera-follows-your-face thing, it makes me feel kinda nauseous... :-/

Byron

(Forgive me, but I can’t pass up an opportunity to bang my Glory drum): Glory also has an epic James Horner score

Rachel W

"Rob Roy" starring Liam Neeson and Jessica Lange and Tim Roth is the better Scottish hero film from the same year, imo. It's fantastic .

JBK405

If we're tossing out other Historical Epics, I'm going to recommend Ridley Scott's "Kingdom of Heaven" (The Extended Director's Cut). I won't give much detail so you can come in blank, but it's a fantastic film that uses its changes to history to enhance the story they're telling (And not just to make sure the bad guys are Obviously Evil).

Happy Hanukkah

Given Lambert's profound myopia, what a waste! (That was a joke. He he he. (That was a joke.))

Kamil Krawczak

I'm in love in Sophie Marceau...25 years now. Such a stunning woman.

Happy Hanukkah

1. I understood that reference. That was Christopher Walken upon meeting Mr. Mojo Risin'. 2. "I wouldn't be surprised, medieval Scottish people fighting" Now now, George, don't make me lecture you about racism again. :-) 3. It is self-evident that all those Bruces would not have been so gung-ho for independence had England been headed not by a king, but by a queen. Someone who was a good Sheila, and not at all stuck up. 4. I am well aware that this movie went to painstaking lengths to be historically accurate, and received well-deserved plaudits for it, but still, there is one thing I have trouble getting over. Brian Cox as a military leader?!

Happy Hanukkah

Looking at the thumbnail, am I to understand that Simone has decided to re-make Kenneth Branagh's excellent 1989 Henry V (which I hereby recommend) as a one-woman production?

Skinny_Obelix

Yes, there are still knights in most European monarchies. Funny and absurd story time, but I'm a Knight in the order of the Belgian Cross under the protection of His Royal Highness King Filip of Belgium, which is I bet is the thinnest knighthood in the history of the world. I literally ended up with it because I built a website for a Duke... Every year a council of high and low nobility comes together to go through a list of possible candidates who excelled through deeds of courage, self-sacrifice and philanthropy. Usually reserved for people who go beyond their civilian responsibilities, like saving someone from a burning house. The problem at the time was that the council was filled with 90+ year olds, making meetings become a pain in the ass. I was taking notes during such a meeting and a few of the older members didn't show up, giving my boss a majority of the votes. So he thought nothing better than to seize the moment and install me as a 17 year old in the council. I was awarded the Bronze palms of Humanity, the lowest rank in the order of the Belgian Crown, and got a seat on the council. The thing he hadn't foreseen was the fact that since members of the council were already landed nobles, that usually this title was a secondary title. But in my case it was a primary title, and because I was on the council that low rank would upgrade every few years. It didn't matter that I didn't do anything, and I quit a month later, I still get an increase in rank. So that is how earlier this month I was promoted to Knight. It comes with a few weird things, like I have to pay a heraldic designer to design a coat of arms. I also have to pay for the actual medals, I just get the paper that says I'm a Knight. Now that I'm a Knight, however, I'm supposed to get invites for Royal events, but haven't got one so far. For me, it's just a fun thing to explore and see in what trouble it can get me, but it's kinda embarrassing when you see people who saved lives, so I'm never wearing those medals, or even buying for that matter.

Shreddy

Against a city 10:1. At least nowadays (I read this in an article regarding the war in Ukraine). A castle would be closer to a city I think. Or worse

Hondo the Cat

That is very cool and interesting - genuinely. Especially that they make you pay for your own medals! And it is mental that you got the knighthood for making a website for a duke. That's both brilliant and hilarious. But I honestly must ask, have you ever said... "Ni!" ? :)

Hondo the Cat

Rob Roy is a FAR better film. I admit that's an element of taste - Braveheart is action and big emotive gestures. It's an excellent example of that *sort* of film. But Rob Roy is just so intense and more believable. And Tim Roth... is both brilliant and horrifying in that film. I honestly think it's his finest role and that's saying something.

DG

A lot it’s fictional But the general idea and the battles aren’t

thomas king

From Screenrant.com How do Scots feel about Braveheart? Originally Answered: What do Scottish people think of the film, "Braveheart"? They love it. As a scot I can say we watch it in unison every Christmas. It's a tradition, the whole family gathers round on Christmas day and yells "freedom".

Marcel Anacker

When I asked a scot friend of mine about Mel Gibson, he just said We don't don't mention that name here.

michael clarke

i cant see you doing it, because its so obscure, but theres a similar story called Riel. its about louis riel the metis leader. he lead the last revolt against the british here in canada during the british take over of the french colony. extra points because its introduced by william shatner lol. im metis. its been a while since ive seen it, and since have done a lot of research into my families history (we are descended from his brother), but from memory it includes a lot of the major points. it can be found in a bay thats been known to host pirates. https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0079810/

theedgeinshow

If you want to see a film that is historically accurate you should totally watch Buckaroo Banzai

Lex Kuzma

Except its a movie, and in the movie the two characters are adults. Yes, a completely different story where she's a child but the same events happen would be gross, but nobody told that story on purpose.

Dk

Not sure if you realized it or not, but Hamish's dad is Lord Commander Mormont.

Lex Kuzma

I love this movie so much. I'm glad you guys enjoyed it. And yes, James Cosmo as Campbell (Hamish's dad) is indeed one of the most badass characters ever. Prima Nocta was definitely not a thing in Scotland at that time, but there is a healthy debate about how real it was in other times and places: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Droit_du_seigneur

Jobbe Smit

Don't worry Simone, nobody understands Hollywood battles. Back in my day we didn't run into battle, that's exhausting. You walked in a vaguely orderly formation towards the enemy and tried to keep a clear understanding of where your friends were. You didn't want to be surrounding into a chaotic brawl. Hollywood battles are to real battles what bar fights are to a martial arts contest. Sure they're vaguely similar but a lot less organized and generally a lack of skills by those involved.

Eversharpe

Another historical tidbit, Scots didn't wear kilts till about 300 years after Wallace.

Steve Doyle

Really enjoyed this one. Although massive parts of the movie are fictitious for the sake of a gripping story. The mood and tone definitely captured the brutality of the English empire which continued to both neighboring countries and beyond for many centuries after this. If your interested in more modern examples, check out The Wind That Shakes the Barley or Michael Collins. Both focus on Ireland's play for independence from British rule in the early 20th century.

Darin Foat

If you're in the mood for a great Mel Gibson action flick, absolutely check out Mad Max 2 (which was released in the US as The Road Warrior). It's by far the best of the original Mad Max trilogy. And you don't really need to see the first one to follow it. It's got one of the all time best car chases in film history, and my all time favorite screen performance by a dog.

Ancient_Red_Dragon

I really dont like how they presented Robert the Bruce aka the guy who betrayed Wallace at the end (Which he never did) if you want a good movie about Robert the Bruce watch the movie The Outlaw King.

James Falato

William Wallace's actual nobility better explains his knowing Fluent French and Latin... Robert the Bruce acknowledged the Drawing and Quartering of William Wallace as a Rallying Cry to Fight For Independence...

Wrencher86

I'm definitely not a history buff (especially English) but I'm pretty sure England has been ruled by quite a few Kings who weren't English by blood. King Richard (the "good" King in Robin Hood Stories) was actually pretty shit and spent most of his time in France or on crusades. Only went to England a handful of times in his entire life.

Eivind Johnsen

A The forest playthrough with the both of you would be good fun! Uncut so its easier and stuff

Andrew

Wanted to add to the recommendations for Rob Roy. Great movie with a stacked cast.

Some of the best scenes in movie history happen in this movie, and here's a hint to the trend: they all happen when there's no dialogue. Little Murron giving little William a thistle (a thistle!) at the funeral. The bride surrendering herself to the Englisg noble with all of her dignity. William kneeling before Murron's father which has taught me personally about how to make an apology more than anything else in this world. William almost killing Robert before he sees who he is killing and then both of them having their worlds turned around. Hamish throwing William's sword. It's such a great movie. Shame it's built on a pile of make-believe pretending to be historical. But if you take it for the fiction it is, it's marvelous.
