Not a fan of the early XMen movies but if this means we get to Logan at some point then I’m all for this! This franchise is so bizarre, it’s all over the place in terms of tone and continuity. There’s some bangers but there’s also utter shite. When things start not making sense, trust me, just stop trying to make sense of it. The world makes no sense after the second movie.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

This really was a key movie that got comic book movies rolling in terms of being taken seriously, not to mention Hugh Jackman’s breakout role. I’m sure I won’t be the only patron to tell y’all the sequel is as good if not better and well worth watching! Also yes it was written as an allegory to the Civil Rights tensions back in the 60s

Chase Schleich

Well that's out of left field. Haven't seen the original X-men films in forever.

Jeff K

X2 is definitely the best of the original trilogy, I think. They were still finding their footing in this one, and obviously didn't have the same budget they later got so this one looks cheaper and a little cheesier.

jmundt33a

Stronger, less control. Jean’s burden. Skip Last Stand. Others are good until you hit Dark Phoenix Even X-Men Origins: Wolverine. It explains why people were so mad and Ryan Reynolds’ history with Wade Wilson. And HEY! I made the shoutout list again. Interestingly, both Last Stanf and Dark Phoenix are attempts to adapt the same comics arc around Jean Gray. Even Joss tried it and crashed out with Season 6 of Buffy.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Yeah it still had the 90s cheese hangover in places. X2 is what a great sequel should do and steps up the character drama and action even better for sure

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

ALL are good (except Origins) X-Men X2: X-Men United X-Men The Last Stand X-Men Origins Wolverine X-Men First Class The Wolverine X-Men Days of Future Past X-Men Apocalypse X-Men Dark Phoenix Deadpool Deadpool 2 The New Mutants Logan

Jeff K

Wait, was Dark Willow inspired by the Dark Phoenix storyline? Huh. Never realized that, but it certainly makes sense.

michael clarke

i was obsessed with xmen to the point that i was writing fan fiction all the way through school. these movies were both wanted and also felt like a betrayal. just things like wolverine and sabretooth not knowing each other despite their rivalry being iconic. changing the ages of rogue and iceman. lots of little nitpicks that really just shows they didnt respect the lore and just cherry picked what they personally enjoyed. that being said, simones enjoyment of her introduction to it was really delightful. i hope you continue. so many shows to watch, but if you did the phoenix arc from the 90's animated series, i know youd enjoy it. as far as i know, magnetos origin has always been as a child in the holocaust. its getting harder and harder to maintain that though, because his age in present day would be nearing 100. i always wanted nightcrawlers powers. living a life with nothing but destinations. i hate travel. hate waiting.

michael clarke

yes, but george is right in saying that different writers have used it to mean different things. these films was bryan singer channeling the oppression of gay people. hes absolutely vile and the less said about him the better. the point still stands.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Yep definitely interpreted based on which writers take on the material, especially X-Men from what I read in my teens. Also agreed - less said, the better!

Shibby

X-Men 2 is even better which doesn't happen often with comic book movies

Ethan Holgate

Oh this is a surprise the X-Men movies are fantastic hope you enjoy them all if you decide to react to all of them

Ethan Holgate

I actually like orgins despite it's flaws dark phoenix is the weakest one I think but I still enjoy it

Ochnoe123

in my opinion another great Ian McKellen Movie is Apt Pupil hope you will watch it eventually.

JoeNotCharles

Did you catch some of the Canadian (Toronto) location shooting? The interior of the school is Casa Loma, and pretty sure the train station is Union. The hallway where Xavier and Magneto first meet, with all the pillars that look like white X's, isn't a set - that's Roy Thompson Hall.

Elder Lyons

where did they say theyve seen logan? i mean i can imagine george having seen it but simone said she has as well?

Simon Pegged Me

Continuing along the lines of the X-Men comics as an allegory or metaphor for the Civil Rights Movement, Professor X and Magneto represented the two prominent leaders of the movement: Professor X was Dr. King, the one who thought the goals of emancipation and equality could be achieved through peaceful actions, and Magneto was Malcolm X, the leader who believed freedom had to be taken through any means necessary, including violence.

Simon Pegged Me

As far as which mutant I wanted to be, I wanted to be Angel, an heir to a billion dollar estate who could fly. But if the billion dollars wasn't part of the deal, I'd pass on the wings and flight and take Nightcrawler's mutation—teleportation and enhanced agility.

Doug Shore

shit on Alberta all you want, but hey have amazing dinosaurs

Jeff K

I believe Singer pitched the movie to McKellen and Stewart as those characters being parallels of Malcolm X and MLK, respectively.

Jerrett thompson

So George is correct about most comic book characters having different origins over time but Magneto is one whose basic keep his the same. Always a Jewish Holocaust survivor. Incredibly important to his character and to his creator Jack Kirby who was Jewish. It’s why some fans are worried about modern MCU might change it to fit with the timeline since Magneto would be a 100+ years old now. Like Ironman with the Iraq war instead of the original Vietnam War

Wrencher86

This is a nice surprise. The series as a whole is kind of a mixed bag but this, X2 and Logan are great. Logan especially so. First Class and Future Past are good for the prequel series. After that they get a bit... silly.

Jerrett thompson

Also to note about the most damage Wolverine has survived/recovered from. From the comics he has been point blank with a nuke turning him into a skeleton and regened from it. Maybe there has been more but I’m not much of a comic book nerd. I just have randomly a lot of knowledge about some of them

J. Valentine

Can't wait for them to watch Logan one day

jmundt33a

Yup. I thought I heard about him admitting that in interviews later. And he’d apparently been setting it up since Season 3. Tara’s well-founded concerns mirror Oz’s concerns.

Ronnie

Loved the X-Men characters from watching the cartoon growing up and reading the occasional comic. The quality in the films is all over the place and personally I think you can get away with watching X-Men, X2, Deadpool 1 and 2 and Logan and be fine skipping everything else.

JBK405

This movie was generally well-received by fans of the comics, without (much) criticism for the costume changes. Most people recognized that the comic costumes wouldn't translate well to the big screen. The biggest complaint was actually about the lines TALKING about the costume changes, particularly Scott's line about "yellow spandex", since that was viewed as being insulting towards the comics and the fans themselves ("This is SERIOUS, not like the comics you losers like"). A bunch of other comicbook films likewise felt the urge the take digs at the original material to show that they're Grown Up, and it always rubs the wrong way. Magneto's origin has remained more consistent than most comicbook characters, almost always a Holocaust survivor, but even that has changed depending on the continuity and writers. He's usually Jewish, but sometimes he's written as Roma instead, and sometimes they only vaguely imply so he could potentially have been from one of the other groups targeted by the Nazis. But the Jewish origin is so prevalent that it comes back to there eventually. Huge swathes of the comicbook industry was created by Jews, so the comics from the 40s, 50s, and 60s are FILLED with social commentary based on what they lived through and what they observed others going through. The X-Men were created during the African-American Civil Rights Movement in the 1960s, but have been adapted over time to represent a hundred different social, racial, religious, and political groups. It depends on the politics of the time.

Max Krause

Pretty sure they've already seen it, they talked about it in Deapool 2 because of the Logan spoilers at the start.

Hawke

Wolverine regenerated from a drop of blood (that landed on a cosmic mcguffin that supercharged his healing ability...)

Daryl

yes

Tenwyn

there's a very cool episode of the X-Men animated series where Wolverine and Captain America liberate a young Magneto from a concentration camp. Not sure if that was canon in the comics or it was done just for the animated series.

Jeff K

Dang. I was gonna say there was one time that Hulk literally ripped him in half, but never knew he got nuked point blank.

Chase Schleich

Yeah and McKellen saw the parallels that mutants have with gay rights which really got him interested in the movie.

Chase Schleich

Having the character be a holocaust survivor is getting harder and harder as time goes on. In the near future they're going to have to come up with a new backstory for him, at least in the films. Unless they want him to be a 100 year old man at the start of the first film.

Teyon Alexander

Why Toad? Toad was Magneto’s original henchman. His Igor if you will. Including him is a nod back to the original Brotherhood Of Evil Mutants in the comics.

Jeff K

I will be curious to see how the costume looks in Deadpool 3, though, since it's a yellow version and more comics accurate (I do think it's smart they went with the yellow and blue one, and not the one with brown though; I cannot fathom that one looking good in live action). The yellow/blue one looks pretty damn good though in the photos that have leaked out.

Jeff K

Dang, I thought I had watched every single episode of that series and don't have any memory of that one. I need to go back and look. In part because it's still probably the best representation of the X-Men in TV/film (and that theme song... what a fucking banger).

Skyruff

I have to disagree with the backstory piece. Major comics/characters tend to build backstory when they originally didn’t exist or change the character to match a new back story such as all the different versions of the “the flash” but Barry Allen as the flash had a mostly consistent origin. Marvel tends not to play with origin rewrites as much. Wolverine’s backstory for example was never set, only guessed at by fans and comic characters, for decades until they finally set it down in a limited series/graphic novel.

Rob Church

Of course it would be Bryan Singer to cast actors who actually look like highschool kids...

Wrencher86

So why did Simone say she doesn't know anything about X-Men if she's seen Logan?

AJ Lynch

I always pick time travel I mean who doesn't want the chance to save the world and end it just to save it again at the same time?

AJ Lynch

you should stay with the xmen universe for a little while though because it does get crazy

Elder Lyons

Zac the 2 arent mutually exclusive. Logan is about 1 character in the Xmen universe. she could've seen just that movie on its own and know nothing about the rest of the franchise that came before. that movie works as a stand alone film, its not a sequel to any of the story lines and has only 2 characters from the x men franchise in it. both of which she recognized before this movie started. everyone else in Logan were added just for that film and that film alone.

Happy Hanukkah

"Always a Jewish Holocaust survivor." Yes and no. From the time he had a backstory, he was always a Holocaust survivor, but he was retconned from Jewish to Roma, to Jewish passing for Roma*... 🙄 (Hoping this will not start a pointless political discussion: I'm almost surprised it wasn't decided that his family was persecuted because his parents were somehow a same-sex couple.) [ADDED:] * As JBK405 put it: "But the Jewish origin is so prevalent that it comes back to there eventually."

Happy Hanukkah

1:14 "You wanna watch?" "Nah." Shortest "reaction" ever. :-) 4:00 "I would give anything to have Ian McKellen read me a bedtime story." *Phrasing*, George!!! :-) 4:25 "In Alberta or Saskatchewan?" It's all the same place; them cunning prairie people just pretend that there's two separate entities in order to increase their political power. 4:39 "Ti-Ping is not a city in China." Haha. 4:46 You mean it has a woman on it? 11:34 "I feel like immortality isn't all it's cracked up to be." You are correct. Let me tell you, after the first few billion years, things start seeming somewhat repetitive. A short Babylon 5 disquisition on immortality: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0OI4kah6Rp4 [NOTE: I don't think this clip gives away any significant plot points, but caveat spectator.] 21:55 Well, if you're hiring Rebecca Romijn... 27:25 If we're going to get all science-y, then full control over electromagnetism would seem to give you almost unlimited power, as opposed to the common depiction of merely manipulating metal. 29:26 Which might explain why Logan is regularly depicted drinking and smoking. "I bet he's never made any poor decisions..." Seriously, that healing power has made him irresponsible. If you know that nothing can really harm you, why be cautious?

Happy Hanukkah

"Huge swathes of the comicbook industry was created by Jews" See for example the book "Stan Lee: A Life in Comics" by Liel Leibovitz, which purports to show "the deeply Jewish and surprisingly spiritual roots of Stan Lee and Marvel Comics."

Adam Wetstein

the mutant at this time were a stand in for the gay community more so in x2 but also they made a magneto a jew while X is a Christian

Happy Hanukkah

1. Your (second) point is well taken. :-) 2. In an interview, Stan Lee claimed that he originally intended Xavier and Magneto to be brothers. 3. Some fans speculated that the reason for the retcon in the comics turning Magneto from Jewish to Roma was to avoid charges of antisemitism, given he was about to perform (yet another?) heel turn. 4. An article on the general issue: https://www.cbr.com/the-abandoned-an-forsaked-magneto-is-a-gypsy/ Some additional notes for this article: (i) Magneto first appeared in the first issue of the X-Men in 1963. (ii) Uncanny X-Men #150 if from 1981. (Of significance is that Kitty Pryde is a young Jewish teenager.) (iii) Uncanny #199 is from 1985. (iv) Classic X-Men #19 is from 1988.

Happy Hanukkah

For those interested, the episode is "Old Soldiers" (S05E11, 1997). Written by Len Wein. ADDED, after Tenwyn's second comment: Apologies if I misled anyone. The episode I mistakenly mentioned is another WW2 era flashback featuring Wolverine and Captain America, but without Magneto.

Happy Hanukkah

X-Men fan fiction? Kid Dynamo, anyone? :-) Re teleportation, have you seen Jumper (2008)? I remember enjoying the novel it's loosely based on, but I have yet to see it.

Jasper Collins

If you're down with the cheese I'd love to go through all the x-men movies. I lost intrest with the really new ones but there are some real gems in there.

michael clarke

i couldnt afford many comics so id write my own. every time i got one it would give context and id readjust my stories. needless to say, i was really particular about the lore lol. i saw jumper. not since it came out, but i remember liking it. if im remember correctly it was a little redemption for the man who hates sand.

Happy Hanukkah

I can only imagine how it must grate on you to have some of the more lackadaisical screenwriters being described as fan-fiction writers. :-) (By the way, Kid Dynamo was arguably the best-known and most well-regarded X-Men fan fiction. Way back then.)

Tenwyn

Sorry, it was from the X-Men Evolution animated series not from the original one from the 90's. If you're interested it's Season 2 Episode 14 - "Operation Rebirth". X-Men Evolution isn't as good as the 90's series but it does have some very good episodes.

D- Something Something

I think I had an existential crisis when George said this movie was 23 years old....

MikeBdrx

Beginning of the patreon reaction to Deadpool 2 they say they have both watched Logan.

Happy Hanukkah

3:14 "I have here a list of names..." is a blatant reference to McCarthy, whom you encountered second-hand in Oppenheimer.

Korpse

Toad was played by Ray Park, aka Darth Maul so at a few points in the movie you had gandalf and maul sharing screen time 🙌💚

Tomas Gaspar

I saw that on in the cinema and Wow!! I was so blown away allthough I was a bit put off that Magneto was an old man...in the comics he was more like middle Aged...and I am not talking about the other movies like First Class or so...

Thor Melsted

Ian McKellen was 60 when X-Men was shot, which is technically middle-aged, albeit at the tail-end.

Mister_Momus

Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver are both (typically) mutants and both had runs as Avengers. Spider-man is technically considered a mutant in several iterations, though his mutation is from the spider bite instead of natural evolution of an X-gene. Other scientifically generated powersets like super-soldier serum for Captain America, Winter Soldier, Hulk or mystic flower juice like Black Panther could be argued as mutation processes, but generally are not put in the same box as X-men mutants when those storylines overlap.
