That movie is the flip side of Independence Day. Those are the two best “alien invasion” movies

Not to beat a dead horse, but I once again encourage you to watch Ed Wood. While I don't mean to belabor the point, it does strike me as weird that you've been avidly exploring Tim Burton's work– what is this, the fourth Burton film in a year? –, and never getting around to seeing his most personal and critically acclaimed movie (the only Burton movie to get an Oscar, I believe). It’s a bit like exploring Christopher Nolan's body of work while overlooking The Dark Knight.

The Inedible Mattman!

So this was a huge spoof/homage to the old alien invasion films from the 50's. The trailers bascially spoil the entire movie, but that wasn't the point ... it's all about the names that were in the film. I remember seeing it in the theaters when it came out, and I don't think i STOPPED laughing the entire time. It was perfect. Incidentally, if you liked the asthetic of this, then you should try playing the game "Destroy all Humans". It's a video game where you play as the Martians attempting to destroy humanity in the 1950's. You never get tired of setting cows on fire!

Doesn’t it have to win a poll rather than just get fast tracked to being watched?

Jack Nicholson played two roles because "the executives" told them they couldn't kill Jack Nicholson (As The President) so they gave him another roll so they could kill him twice. The film is a general parody of the entire genre of alien invasion films from the 40s, 50s, and 60s. Individual sequences do riff on specific films, but as a whole it's "Let's get it ALL!"

while watching your reaction i remembered a strange fact about this. they stole the entire premise from the howard stern show. right down to how they kill the aliens with that specific singer. he confronted tim burton about it who claimed they came up with it independently, but howard was not convinced and no one should be. it was blatant theft.

It’s Not Unusual is my karaoke song of choice

In "The Adventures of Buckaroo Banzai Across the 8th Dimension" it isn't Martians who attack earth, but evil, inter-dimensional Lectroids (using YoYoDyne Propulsions as their cover). But Team Banzai, with the help of his Blue Blazer Regulars thankfully saved our planet from infamous Lord John Whorfin's plans.

Watching this has given me an idea. I don't know how meta you guys want to get, but I think you'd enjoy Mystery Science Theater 3000: The Movie.

Danika Silva

As always, nobody recognized Natalie Portman 🫣🥺💯🇨🇦🤭

Ed Wood is my favorite Tim Burton movie. But had he lived, could Ed Wood have appreciated its brilliance?

Michael

Literally my favorite show ever (tied with Deadwood); just look at my profile pic=) Probably hard to react to though since it, in a way, has built-in reactions already lol...but I'd love to see them try.

Da Big Appa

Look at George looken all skinny.

Hans Olav Sletnes

That's a fair point. I think they could add it to a poll at least. Either drama, comedy, or random/miscellanous. Either that or just do a Tim Burton poll.

Wrencher86

Yeah, I don't even know if it would work. But A) I think it'd be fun to try and B) it's a really funny movie that I think they'd like.

The direct inspiration for “Mars Attacks” is the Topps trading card series of the same name from 1962. This was a post sci-fi boom homage with a definite edge: one notorious card is simply “Alien Destroys a Dog” where the Martian is blasting some kid’s pooch while the terrified child looks on and screams. It had a darkly humorous mean streak that the film manages to capture while still being relatively light-hearted. The fact that the movie was structured like a late 60s/early 70s disaster film coupled with the fact that most critics weren’t interested in a feature-length joke from nerdy counterculture meant that it flopped pretty hard.

Jinyatta

A good companion to this film would be Battle: Los Angeles, similar theme but a whole different direction

Feignorance

Lol fun fact the older kid that Pam Grier stopped to get from the arcade is an uncredited founder of the Kardashian Empire, Ray J.

4:00 What if their ships approached with gun ports open? (Babylon 5 reference.) 4:47 Wikipedia: "The fireside chats were a series of evening radio addresses given by Franklin D. Roosevelt, the 32nd President of the United States, between 1933 and 1944." (Address further requests to Joseph R. Biden.) 10:03 "As the flying saucer landed, I couldn't help but wonder..." 13:22 Well, George, shooting lower is contra-indicated. 23:12 For shame, Simone! What a mean cheap joke! :-P

Happy Hanukkah

A channel willing to really commit to the bit could post (on April 1st, natch) a reaction to this movie entirely in this style. I'd be there. (Faute de mieux, it could just post an "excerpt" from the reaction.)

Zach D

sorry to be that guy but i’m still butt hurt that this beat Tommy Boy

Happy Hanukkah

I was surprised when I took a look at their respective IMDb scores. Still haven't changed my mind, though. :-)

Brandon Meng

More Natalie Portman please! BLACK SWAN!! Closer Garden State V for Vendetta Jackie Phenomenal actress, so many great movies

Who Are These People

Yeah George this references/spoofs 50's sci fi movies as much as Tim Burton's Batman referenced 50's and 60's Batman comics. Check out 'The Day the Earth Stood Still' (1951) (and catch a reference used in 'Army of Darkness') and 'War of the Worlds' (1953) (and catch a plot device spoofed in 'Independence Day')

Happy Hanukkah

I'd probably go for Beautiful Girls (1996) for the ensemble cast. Even Rosie O'Donnell (!) gets a funny scene, though what makes it work for me is Matt Dillon and Timothy Hutton 's reactions.

John McLeod

I watched this when it came out and when Jack did his presidents speech to the aliens, I was the only one in the theatre laughing. When the alien cried I couldn’t control myself. I must’ve sounded insane.

Who Are These People

I've heard of it, never saw it. I'll look right now to see if it's available on a reputable, licensed broadcasting service or whatever. Update: Made it 15 minutes. I don't mind low-budget and sometimes low-brow but this fucking sucks, trashy racist shit. I had to stop and cleanse my palate with 'A Night at the Opera'.

Grinznmore

War of the Worlds (1953) cornerstone alien invasion movie that still holds it's place in my list of favorite films.

Happy Hanukkah

Apologies for making you endure this* 😂 and congratulations on your good taste. I was referring solely to the denouement: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OsxwwhJ6GrY [I'd say SPOILERS!, but I doubt this tomato can spoil. :-) ] I trust this one-minute clip explains my comment, which, despite appearances, was not meant as a recommendation. :-) (* I only read your response after the update.)

Peter Dillard

Independence Day had a better speech because they stole it from Henry V :-)

Jordan Barnes

Unrelated to this video, but a nomination for Cinecringe: The Room, the brain child of Tommy Wiseau. It would be an absolute joy to behold, and you’ll never say the name Mark the same way again. It’s historically one of the worst movies of all time, and you’ll absolute hate it in the best way.

I'm from Las Vegas and it killed me seeing the Landmark Hotel destroyed in this film for real. RiP, Landmark now and always.
