Ack ack indeed. Let’s see if Simone can set a WTF record. I’m guessing she can.

Den Radar Ryan

You guys are spoiling me with all these Tim Burton/Danny Elfman movie reactions. 😁 Beetlejuice, Batman, Nightmare Before Christmas, etc. Keep goin' eh? P.S. I'm a Maritimer so I basically do say eh...eh lol ♥️🙃🇨🇦🐦‍⬛🤘🍿👾

JediLounger

Gilmore Girls Simone! Dropping out of Yale left and right!

Vellu

Another Tim Burton movie you don't know about (or haven't reacted to) is "Ed Wood" (1994) starring Johnny Depp.

christopher b swanson

The funny thing to remember.........this was released to theaters only 4 months after independence day..............

djKENTO

Shockingly not the first movie based on really grotesque trading cards. That “honor” goes to Garbage Pale Kids. But look up the origianl Mars Attacks trading cards from the 1960s. They were pretty violent for the time. Very cool retro sci-fi ray gun gore.

Justin James

I just now realised that this is an actual movie and not just a strange nightmare I had when I was a kid...

christopher b swanson

nevermind, u mentioned it lol.............im a dumbass for not waiting lol

Spacedone

The term 'flying saucer' was coined by newspapers in 1947 after Kenneth Arnold reported seeing unidentified flying objects that were saucer or disc shaped. After that, it was picked up by every scifi b-movie maker in Hollywood.

Hans Olav Sletnes

Not to beat a dead horse, but I once again encourage you to watch Ed Wood. While I don't mean to belabor the point, it does strike me as weird that you've been avidly exploring Tim Burton's work– what is this, the fourth Burton film in a year? –, and never getting around to seeing his most personal and critically acclaimed movie (the only Burton movie to get an Oscar, I believe). It’s a bit like exploring Christopher Nolan's body of work while overlooking The Dark Knight.

G P

You need to check out Ed Wood soon, one of Tim Burton's best

Keerit Thind

Burton has gradually become hit or miss for me. The gothic Victorian emo stuff tends to get a bit long in the tooth, his best of that genre is definitely Sweeney Todd. When you goes outside the box and out of his comfort zone, he is fantastic - Ed Wood, Big Fish, Big Eyes are some of his best.

E. D.

You haven‘t seen an Arnie movie for a while. I suggest Red Heat (1987)

Big.Bad.Mr.Mustard

This movie is an homage to the kind of movies made in the 50s-60s as well as the type of pictures director Ed Wood used to make (Plan 9 from Outer Space). If you were to turn down the color saturation & watch Mars Attacks in black & white, the movie actually looks better.

Your intro about driving and learning it and stupid young people: I am from Germany, everyone drives stick and few people ever see automatic. At least thats what it was at the time of the stories I want to tell regarding that subject (mid/late 90s). Things my stupid friends did... example A: There is one long and tight street between the fields and hills and forrests that leads from the north into our town. We were driving that road and eager to get home because we had just done a short trip to the Netherlands and wanted to get extra cozy with hippy music and cake, it was a great summer day so far. A tracktor was driving in front of us and due to the high crops on the fields sight was limited and overtaking was impossible. The slow tracktor was very annoying. At a traffic light we had to stop. My friend who was driving shifted into neutral gear looked over and said: I cant take it any more, I'll just crash into him now! And he steped on the gas and crashed into the tracktor... because he didnt shift into neutral because he was a fool. He just wanted to make some noise with the engine and be funny but was an idiot. Obviously noone was hurt and no real damage was done because it was like a 2 meter gap so the car couldnt reach any speed. it was hilarious but a clear sign of how stupid kids make stupid jokes that could be dangerous. example B: We, 5 people in a small car, on our way to a music festval. The car was way overloaded with our camping stuff and unreasonably large stockpiles of beer. the last stretch before the festival was a looong very mild curve with trees on both sides, curving very lightly to the right. we had been driving for some hours allready, it was hot and we wanted to get there, but now, not unlikely the 1st scenario, we were stuck behind a small delivery truck from some brewery. So our driving friend begins to go to the left because he wants to pass the truck. At that point two things became clear: The small car way struggling to get any acceleration going and it wasnt one truck but three in a row. The smart choice would have been to just forget the idea to pass them. But smart wasnt on the menu. So he started to pass anyway. And after a suprisingly long time on the left side of the road trying to overtake all the three trucks because there was no space between them, somewhere next to the 2nd, we saw that there was a car coming towards us. Now, the not suicidal choice here would have been to hit the breaks and go back behind the trucks. Nope. He decided to pass and he sticked to it. Obviously we made it, because I can still type this, but it was action-movie-like close. I mean blink of an eye close. And the whole car was silent afterwards. After like 10 seconds the driver said. "What? It worked didnt it?" and we all punched him while he was still driving, risking an accident the second time. This is a good example of a lack of experience leading to bad decissions. and last, example C, very briefly: Me and a friend at bar, get invited to share drinks with three girls we didnt know, made out at the bar for a bit, got invited to party at home, say yes. While sitting on the back seat I realize my girl is not there with me and learn to my surprise that shes the one driving, after drinking with me for a few hours. An example of puberty leading to bad decissions. If you say you and your friends were allways resposible I come to think that we are opposite sides of the spectrum :) My experience is that allowing young people to drive cars is one of the worst ideas ever!

David Martin

"Is he a famous person" is Jim Brown. He is usually #1 on all lists of the greatest NFL football players of all time.

Odd Thomas

Better Tim Burton movies: Sleepy Hollow and Edward Scissorhands

E. D.

If I had to choose who I like the most in this movie I‘d always say Michael J. Fox. I like him in any movie. G&S never watched (on screen at least) M. J. Fox as a main charscter besides BTTF, it‘s about time they start doing it. I suggest they start with one of my favorite comedies The Hard Way (1991).

simon brouillard

Jack Nicholson wanted to do a “peter sellers”” and play a bunch of roles, they settled on 2

Vwlss Nvwls

OMG!!! When my daughter and I saw this, we were walking around the house for weeks going "ACK ACK!! ACK ACK!!" We drove her mother crazy. :D

Odd Thomas

Speaking of Michael J. Fox, you guys still need to watch his best film (outside of BTTF), The Frighteners, directed by Peter Jackson!

Young Blood Priest

True that. He also set some first in Hollywood like the first interracial sex scene he did with Raquel Welch. He was also a civil rights activist he mediated cease fires between crips and bloods in L.A. and help instruct people in achieving financial independence.

Tenwyn

I enjoy when you read the trivia from movies, wish you'd do that more.

Vidal (BillyG!) Gomez jr

This movie was based on a popular trading cards fron the mid 60s of the same name. As a kid, it freaked me out!

punterjoe

While it riffed on clichés from tons of 1950s & 60s B-movies, the REAL inspiration was from an early 1960s series of bubblegum trading cards. (The attribution is at the very end of the credits). The cards totally matched Burton's style & sensibilities and I think they wrote the story around that. Awkward coincidence that Independence Day hit theaters the previous summer - pushing the release date of Mars Attacks into the Christmas season. Funny how those things happen - like Armageddon & Deep Impact hitting theaters at nearly the same time. Thanks for watching Mars Attacks! It was an ACK-ing good time. 😁

Monica Alarcon

I remember going to see this with some friends, I was so excited because I knew about the Mars Attacks cards before and I loved Tim Burton, so I had a great time and my friends hated it because they were expecting another Independence Day and they gave me crap about for a long time afterwards...

REDR58

He also starred in the classic action war movie “The Dirty Dozen” from 1967, having had to leave his NFL career with the Cleveland Browns to star in that movie after the owner of the football team forced him to choose between being an actor and playing football. Well worth a watch.

REDR58

The best thing Burton has been involved in lately for me is the Netflix series “Wednesday.”

Joe

I love this film. It's batshit insane.

Logan Kerlee

lmao, love the intro bit to this! hahahaha, seeing your shocked and amazed takes at the cast list! I've watched this multiple times in my life. Fun stuff! :) Just got finished watching and 'i had a blast. :) This movie was good stuff, for sure. A movie of it's time. I'm glad that you both enjoyed it as well. :)

Patrick

The irony of George complaining about the driving teacher trying to get the attention of his students, while failing by telling a boring story...while simultaneously trying to keep Simone's attention by telling said story...is...amazing.

W T

Think about the stupidest shit you ever have done, car or not, and then realize that everyone has those moments... exacerbated by external factors like, uh, cyclists on the road, your girlfriend just having broken up with you, and you driving drunk because "what's the worst that could happen" That's every single one of us. Everyone has a lapse of judgment at some point, getting hyped by friends (or people pretending to be), and all the experience in the world isn't going to help you when you end up blasting at 160 mph through a tiny city with your girlfriend and her girlfriends in the back. Kind of sucks to survive that experience, but people die and suffer for it so, so much - innocent ones, most of all. Germany is so much more convenient, of course, at least public transit isn't a huge problem, and, in many cases, a brisk hike will get you home from smaller affairs - but cars (or just bikes for that matter) are freaking murder machines and I wish there was some mechanism in place that would account for all the idiots using their phones while on a busy road. Or in between a bunch of pedestrians. Even folks just honking for any reason at all except most dire circumstances get my blood boiling, ironically, because it takes so little foresight to anticipate what a bleeding loud noise could do to anyone on the road, and how much immediate danger you radiate thereby. Love Germany, but the amount of bullshit people willingly suffer in that country and how much leeway is given to not only attempted murder, but straight-up manslaughter - on a constant basis no less - is off the charts. A slap on the actual wrist would be an actual punishment, compared to what you can get away with here. That is, unless you get tested for arbitrary threshold of THC metabolites, because woe is you if you smoked weed at some point during the last six weeks.

Vwlss Nvwls

I am not sure, but I think this movie is meant to mock all alien and sci-fi movies, especially those of the 50s and 60s, which is the basic style of all the equipment you see in this one. It had all the tropes they used to use in the old sci-fi movies as well.

Patrick

George " I wonder where the first description of a disk shape of flying saucers started from?" First hand experiences, George. They're literally in Renaissance paintings and I can say for a fact, that I've seen one. I don't even care if people believe me or not at this point. I was with 4 other people who all saw the same object.

Patrick

For context, the Black guy is Jim Brown, one of the best NFL running backs of all time who wanted to get into movies.

ChickensAreRacist

Ah yes, Tim Burton. Known for being a ‘visual director’ as opposed to other film directors.

John

The Aggressive General was played by Rod Steiger. I highly recommend one of his most famous movies and co-starred Sidney Poitier (In the Heat of the Night) Steiger won an Oscar and It won best picture in 1968.

Jacob King

Different not better. Mars Attacks is 100% the movie Burton set out to make so any issues are with the audience. I’d recommend Ed Wood as the follow up because it’s a movie about movie making and Burton’s philosophy of creativity and art. You can obviously see a lot of Ed Wood aesthetic in Mars Attacks. Sleepy Hollow is definitely my favourite Burton.

Chase Schleich

Don't hide your set up. Use it to promote the channel in class lol

Salvatron

Any chance of adding Brotherhood of the Wolf to a reaction poll? I haven't seen any reactors watch this flick.

Jesse Coombs

Here's hoping for Pee-wee's Big Adventure, Batman Returns, Ed Wood, or Edward Scissorhands...

REDR58

I enjoyed the reaction, but wow, I hate to say it, but this movie was one of the worst I’ve watched in a while. Yeesh. I’ve never seen a more glaically slow and boring invasion movie. Yes, it’s a comedy/spoof but how did it turn out to be so unfunny? How do you have a movie with Martin Short and Danny DeVito turn out so deadly dull? Some of the alien stuff was fun and a few other bits, but there was a lot of pacing problems with this to say the least. Lots of standing around with nothing happening. The first hour was such a slog, and the remainder wasn’t much better. The music was good though, and I liked the giant robot.

Grinznmore

This had strong elements from War of the Worlds and The Day the Earth Stood Still.

Jacob King

I’m really glad you enjoyed this one. It’s not a specific movie parody but a genre parody which is why Independence Day hits so many of the same beats. I saw both of them in the cinema but not back to back. It feels like an adaptation because it’s based off the Topps trading cards. Burton initially wanted to make a Dinosaurs Attack! movie but was talked out of it because of Jurassic Park so it’s ironic that it came out next to another alien invasion movie. Nicholson is in two roles because he wants to be Peter Sellers. The origin of the flying saucer myth is a misunderstanding. A witness described a UFO as moving like a saucer when skipped across the surface of a lake. Travelling fast but also bouncing up and down. This got interpreted as it looks like a saucer and it stuck.

Crunkljack

Independence Day and this. I got to see these movies back to back in a DRIVE-IN! The best!!

gobmob2000

Another comedy recommendation I reckon you two should watch is Rat Race 2001.

Brendan Rafferty

My friends and I had a blast seeing this when it came out. We knew what to expect from Tim Burton and we knew it was going to be campy and absurd. But a lot of people didn’t know that. Mainstream audiences knew Tim Burton as the director of Batman and Batman Returns. This film also came out the same year as Independence Day and a lot of people went to theaters expecting something more like that. As we left the theater, still laughing, talking like the Martians… Ack. Ack. ACK! Ack. …we overheard other audience members on the way out, bitching and complaining because they were expecting something more serious and totally missed the humor and tone of the film. The fact that other people didn’t get it and were even angry about it made us enjoy the experience that much more.

Brendan Rafferty

The flying saucers in “Mars Attacks!” are exactly copied from the flying saucers in the 1956 Ray Harryhausen film “Earth versus the Flying Saucers” This is a youtube link to the trailer for the 1956 film and you can see that the flying saucers are exactly the same. Tim Burton’s computer animated saucers even exactly mimic the stop motion spinning effects from the 1956 film. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=3kbkA0_Zwz8&pp=ygUfZWFydGggdmVyc3VzIHRoZSBmbHlpbmcgc2F1Y2Vycw%3D%3D

Ph4ZeD

I can completely relate to your driving story George, I went back to university in my late twenties and everyone seemed so young and I really stood out!

Brendan Rafferty

A joke many people missed. When they examine the gum the Martian was using to breathe, they say it was N2O… nitrous oxide. Nitrous Oxide is better known as the sedative laughing gas. Of course the Martians breathe laughing gas.

JediLounger

I to know what it is to watch shows many times over. Gone through Gilmore Girls at least 3 times.

LT

I think I like this movie PURELY on nostalgia, I was maybe 9 or 10 when I first saw it. Grew up in the 90s with that "You were good this week so you can rent 1 video game and 1 movie from Blockbuster on Friday." energy. This was one of those weird ones that I picked up off the shelf, likely because there was no Jackie Chan movie in stock and thought it was WAY better than it is because I was high on adrenaline and gummy bears. Watching as an adult - oof. It misses the mark often, still some great satire here and there though.

sarCC

Oh, no, George! I need to tell you that "ironically" making a dad joke is exactly the same as sincerely making a dad joke(this goes for all other types of jokes, too).

Jesse Coombs

Ed Wood is a masterpiece. Hope you guys check it out soon.

Patrick

My internet cut out briefly, literally just as this movie ended and you guys started laughing before the credits... Fuck you Tom Jones... Fuck you.

Patrick

I can tell you in private message or something if you're genuinely interested.

Rachel W

How is it you've now seen Mars Attacks but not Spielberg's sci fi classic "Close Encounters of The Third Kind"(1977)? lol

Odd Thomas

Just realised this is one of two Natalie Portman movies where Parliament gets blown up, heh

tgriexterminator

I'm not going to make any Canadian or Asian driver jokes George.

Shpadow

I'm incredibly confused by the idea that the aliens in Independence Day are intergalactic anything. They came from the moon. Earth's moon.

Astraeos

Wow. George mentioned how beautiful Pam Grier is, and not a single mention of Jackie Brown in these comments. Incredibly, incredibly disappointing. George and Simone, you guys need to pencil in Jackie Brown. It is Tarantino's most underrated movie, and it's personally in my top 3 of his movies. It's so good, such a great soundtrack, and an amazing, amazing performance from Pam Grier and Samuel Jackson.

Tanx

lol the driver's ed videos the government makes. too bad they didn't show you the old "Red Pavement" style videos like we had to watch back in the day. kind of like watching an 80s style action B-movie with gratuitous blood splatter and bad acting.

Gary Fixler

The president's final speech to the aliens, ending with "can't we all just... get along?" was very much a Rodney King reference. I remember the whole movie theater laughing when he said that, because we laughed at terrible things back then. King's quote from a news interview was quoted by everyone for years, like if two kids got in a scuffle on the playground, another kid would have to say "hey, hey! Can't we all just get along?" And everyone would laugh.

Michael Nemo

Mars Attacks is a lot smarter than Independence Day.
