Went the cinema to watch this with an ex. She went to the toilet just as Di Caprio and Damon get on the elevator. Came back and bagpipes were playing. Absolute clusterfuck trying to explain what she’d missed

Mr TV Eye

Good movie, though IMO somehow overrated, if this can be said about any Scorsese movie (so I put the bar up very very high here). He won an Academy Award for this one, and he IMO clearly has quite a few movies that would have deserved it way more. Nicholson rely a little too much on his "crazy bad guy" stereotype for my taste, I liked the somehow more nuanced performance by Eric Tsang more. And I just think the original movie tells the basic story and the inner conflicts (not even Leo beats Tony Leung in that) better overall. Would have loved to see you react to "Infernal Affairs" first and than watch this one - even though George has seen it already.

i thought it was an interesting question so i looked it up. bagpipes are traditional at Scottish and Irish funerals. when they immigrated to the us they took jobs considered "dirty", so they were firemen and police officers. watch killers of the flower moon. ive heard people call it his master piece. its almost four hours long but you dont feel it, and when it ended i wanted more.

Love Your Reactions... Honest and Meaningful Even When There's Hardly Any Meaning...

jmundt33a

Disagree. The Irishman has sections that drag. Goodfellas is overrated. Gangs of New York is an interrogation technique disguised as a film. THIS is excellent.

paul rai

Would second that sentiment on Killers of the Flower Moon. Such an amazing movie. But that is definitely much more bleak and saddening than say Simone & George’s other Scorsese watches.

I always get a genuine thrill when I see new people watch The Departed and we get to the elevator scene. Such a jolt of WTF-ism that never fails to make me happy. Great reaction to (what I think) is great Scorsese. For future Scorsese watches would highly recommend: Casino, Taxi Driver, King of Comedy, and The Irishman. The man just pumps out masterpieces on a regular basis.

Joe Baldwin

If you want to see Ray Winstone even more terrifying, watch Nil By Mouth

Wrencher86

I would like for as many people as possible to see Killers of the Flower Moon, so I am in favor of a reaction. However, I would politely ask George to abstain from a goofy thumbnail on that one.

Wrencher86

If you want to see Ray Winstone more in general, "Sexy Beast" and "The Proposition" are both excellent.

Wrencher86

Some people say this movie is overrated, and I get that it doesn't really have anything grand or profound to say about the world or the human condition. But there's something to be said for a master filmmaker just doing a straight ahead crime thriller with skill and talent. Since we're talking about Scorsese movies, my personal favorite of his is Bringing Out the Dead. Nic Cage, Ving Rhames, John Goodman and Tom Sizemore as EMTs/ambulance drivers in NY. It's a fucking trip.

Wrencher86

I don't really care for Gangs of New York but it's not *that* bad. Plus, you get to watch John C. Reilly, of all people, nearly steal scenes from Daniel Day-Lewis.

Byron

Yeah, I’d agree this is maybe the Fifth or Sixth best Scorsese film, and the Departed has its flaws, but still a must-see

Martin Roca

Now you need to watch Blood Diamond, mega hyper good movie with another impeccable acting from Leo.

Timothy Hedrick

@32:26 the envelope Farmiga's character was handed by DiCaprio contained the CD she later played with the conversation between Jack Damon and Nicholson's character. Love watching people see "that" scene for the first time. Always total shock! Great reaction guys.

theedgeinshow

If you look closely at the opening scene of Buckaroo Banzai, you can see Leonardo DiCaprio is not in the film

I love this movie, but (and this isn't exactly a hot take as plenty have said the same thing) I've always been a little disappointed that Marty (we're tight, I call him Marty, and it's in no way because I can never remember exactly how to spell his last name) went with the most unsubtle metaphor imaginable with that final shot.

Mr TV Eye

To be clear, I have yet to see a bad Scorsese movie. I didn't care to much for Gangs of New York, and yes, The Irishman could probably be 1/2 hour shorter. Again, still both damn good movies. Goodfellas on the other hand to me is - together with The Godfather ofc - the epitome of a Mafia-movie, and and absolute classic. A "perfect movie" if there is such a thing. Casino is very close. And than we got stuff like Mean Streets, Taxis Driver and Raging Bull. Oh, and I love After Hours.

Mr TV Eye

Bringing Out the Dead - completely forgot about that one. Loved it when it came out. Definitely needs a re-watch after all those years.

Wrencher86

Marty (he's my pal too, funny that you and I've never met while hanging with him) is not one for subtlety in a lot of cases. Killers Of The Flower Moon has a theme running through it that at one point is so blatantly expressed on screen that it may as well have been the Ralph Wiggum "the rat symbolizes obviousness!" bit from The Simpsons. But that same theme, and many others, are also shown so subtly through set design and costuming that it's very easy to completely miss them. So it's not like he can't do both.

VariantsWatchMovies

Another Scorsese film you could check out is Raging Bull with Robert De Niro. That got me thinking about some other films from the 80's you haven't gotten to yet: Blue Velvet (a mesmerizing performance by Dennis Hopper) Dead Poet's Society (Academy Award nomination for Robin Williams) Drugstore Cowboy (Great character study and a young Matt Dillon) Heathers (Dark Comedy with Winona Ryder & Christian Slater) Less Than Zero (1980s excess and a pretty compelling performance by Robert Downey Jr.) Ordinary People (Oscar winner with an amazing cast and directed by Robert Redford) Risky Business (Tom Cruise's breakout role) River's Edge (Young Keanu Reeves and an all around disturbing film) Ruthless People (Fun dark comedy with Danny DeVito and Bette Midler, and one of my favorite lines from a movie ever… "This could very well be the stupidest person on the face of the earth. Perhaps we should shoot him.") Taps (Young Sean Penn, Tom Cruise, and Timothy Hutton). The Big Chill (A great ensemble cast – but also a great soundtrack which might make it difficult to edit for YouTube, but one of my favorite films from the era). The Falcon & The Snowman (True spy story also with a young Sean Penn and Timothy Hutton).

Jeff K

I think that's what frustrates me most about it: we know that Marty (great guy, I'm surprised I didn't see you at the holiday party) can do subtlety beautifully. So when he goes heavy-handed, it stands out even more.

I have the weirdest relationship with this movie. I was in a film group where we were partnered with a random person that would recommend us to watch a movie we hadn’t seen and write a review on it. My person recommended Infernal Affairs so I watched it and thought it was outstanding and thought it was one of the best films I had seen from that group. Coincidentally I also had tickets to see The Departed the next day and had no idea that it was a remake of Infernal Affairs. So I’m watching The Departed the next day thinking this is weirdly familiar and eventually realizing it is a remake of the movie I watched the night before and that most of the big plot points are taken directly from Infernal Affairs. So I am stuck in a theater for 2+ hours basically rewatching a movie I had watched 12 hours prior bored out of my mind. I can see that The Departed is a good movie, I just can never truly enjoy it because of my experience. (and the rat at the end is dumb)

Andrew

I thought I'd mention, since you just watched Braveheart, that the actor who plays Fitzy (Costello's thug with the deep voice and Irish accent) is the same actor who played the crazy Irish guy, Stephen, in Braveheart.

Rachel W

I'd like to suggest a truly brilliant Scorcese film--and complete departure from his familiar gangster focus-the gorgeous, "The Age of Innocence", set in the Gilded Age of NYC and based on the Edith Wharton novel. Absolutely heartbreaking and beautiful starring Daniel Day-Lewis and Michelle Pfeiffer. Simone would really love it.

L77045

I was so confused when I saw the Departed in theater. Was part of the way through when I realized I'd already seen the movie, but it was a brand new release. Took me a few minutes to connect it to Infernal Affairs, then was like...ah, well...I know how this ends.

thomas king

This is also loosely based on Whitey Bulger

Jesus F Christ

The rat at the end symbolizes obviousness.

RandomNevermind

Since George were talking about phones as the part of the plot here are two heavily underrated movies where phones and phone calls are weaved into the plot even better (I think): Cellular (2004) - Very straightforward movie that is full of competent characters using logic and doing things competently Phone Booth(2002) - Slightly unbelievable plot with pretty unique set for action thriller and beautiful Colin Farrel's performance Also, thank you Cinebinge. You are the best as always.

Kris

Okay, but seriously Simone... How long can you continue to come up with unique video intros 😂😂

Chris Bruneau

OMG! I hated killers of the flower moon, way too long and boring. Not in same ball park as other Scorsese films.

Wrencher86

You're out of your gourd if you think KOTFM was "boring". Everything, and I mean everything, that happens in that movie serves either the plot at large or character development. It's an astounding piece of film-making and a devastating (true!!!) story.

Adam Wetstein

The original police were Orangeman of Scotland and Ireland so bagpipes were ceremonial

Ari

The CD comes from the letter costigan (di caprio) sends to Sullivan (Damon). Not the letter he gives her. The letter she is given is a yellow envelope with no writing on it. The cd comes from a white envelope addressed to Sullivan with costigan’s info at the top. We don’t get to see what was in her letter but since dignam (Wahlberg) knows about Sullivan by the end, we can assume the letter explains to her who costigan really is, that Sullivan is a rat and that she should find dignam to tell him that info.

A

Holy cow! Please give it a rest about "what it's based on!!"

Darin Foat

You know, George - Looking at that thumbnail, you could totally pull off that haircut.
