Ah yes, “The Depah-ted.” Definitely one of the best Korean remake/retoolings and one of Scorsese’s best shot films for sure. Wahlberg kills it in this movie and do agree it is weird watching this if you see The Other Guys first and not the other way around lol

christopher b swanson

The departed with coffee and my crew with my cinebinge coffee cup in hand...............perfect Saturday morning

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

De Niro actually turned down Martin Sheen's role, and he turned down a part in Gangs of New York (highly recommend by the way), I don't know why though.

Conner

He just didn't feel like it IIRC. Like Scorcese asked him "Hey i'm doing X, you wanna do x?"... "Nah"... "okay."

christopher b swanson

this was the best "I'm so glad I saw at home" movie.........spring 2007 with my first blu ray player and i had to rewind elevator scene, i would have been pissed in theater not able to lol

Patrick

I love "YIFY"...If ya know, ya know...

djKENTO

I hate this movie but I love you guys enough to sit through it and see what you think.

Śéáń

I've always meant to revisit Infernal Affairs, I've only seen the first two films in the series (the two that this film is adapted from) I remember not liking The Departed as much in comparison when it came out, because I was in a very anti-american-remake mindset at that age, but it really is a brilliantly crafted film in it's own right.

djKENTO

I just don’t like a single character in the film. I find them all to be terrible human beings and I can’t root for a single one. Watching terrible people swear too much and casually drop slurs while they all treat each other terribly is not my idea of a good time. I’m more of a Bringing out the Dead type of Scorsese dan. Or King if Comedy. Or Raging Bull. But this is just so over the top.

Christopher Feiertag

A suggestion for another movie that takes place in Boston: 2015’s “Spotlight”, the peak of movies about the press.

Bryce Lamkin

I recommend Son's of Anarchy as s show to watch please, it has 7 seasons

Patrick

I forgot how much you have to constantly pay attention to this movie to catch every detail.

Jay

Anyone else think of Bojack Horseman watching this 😂😂? Speaking of which, TV recommendation for Bojack Horseman.

Ph4ZeD

George, the Patriot Act was law passed in the US following 9/11 which gave law enforcement more surveillance powers. So Alec Baldwin's character was saying that he loves it!

Robert da Spruce

Farting cell phone case? Sure. We believe you Simone 😉

Paul G

I really feel like this movie is more of a "inspired by" Infernal Affairs than a straight remake. The basic setup is the same but as George pointed out the characters are very different. The Frank Costello character is actually based on the real Boston mobster Whitey Bulger. A lot of the finer details of The Departed are purposely left ambiguous and open to interpretation but, I think the insinuation with the baby at the end is that it was actually Costigan's and not Sullivan's and he realized that when he saw her crying at the funeral. Although I think the abortion take is a real possibility too. Sullivan's character is also really open to interpretation. When the movie first came out there was a lot of speculation that he was a closeted homosexual and there is a fair bit of evidence to suggest that but, at the end of the day it really doesn't help push the plot along so why include that? I've never really bought into that theory. As someone who has lived his entire life in the greater Boston area this movie has been both awesome and terrifying for me - it was one of a handful of movies from the late '90s through mid-2000's that really put Boston and Massachusetts as a whole on the map for movie destinations but, it also really shined a rather dim light on the city.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

The cast is obviously great but there are a lot of minor characters that are well casted too. The guy who played De La Hunt, yep, he was in Shawshank, but he was also one of the Colonial Marines in Aliens. And Fitzy was Steven, the Irishman in Braveheart. Ray Winstone, Mr. French, is always great but he was awesome in Sexy Beast with Ben Kingsley and Ian McShane. Vera Farmiga I'm hoping you guys will see more, especially in the Conjuring movies. Oh yeah, and the FBI liason guy was played by Mark Wahlberg's other brother, the one that runs their burger chain. And I thought it was funny that Kevin Corrigan, Billy's coke head cousin, was making fun of Puerto Ricans when in real life he's half Puerto Rican. I do love this movie although I did think it was odd that Scorsese got the Oscar for this and not Goodfellas or Casino, but you know how that goes. That said you got another Scorsese great checked off, still Casino, The Aviator, and Gangs of New York, oh and of course Raging Bull, oh yeah, Taxi Driver, and I'm sure I'm missing several more lol

theedgeinshow

It is well known that Martin Scorsese considers this film "his Buckaroo Banzai"

Truth

To be fair this is not a Disney style movie. Its about gangsters, corrupt cops etc so its expected that it will have horrible people in it who swear constantly and do horrible things. Personally i like these more realistic gritty films.

Michael Robayo

Presumably, the baby was William's because Colin had trouble getting it up. Also, Scorsese was pretty right, his films are more situational and do not have a real central plot throughout. We are experiencing the characters' lives and what happens to them more than a central ongoing narrative. Like in Raging Bull, Goodfellas, Taxi Driver., etc.

djKENTO

What a cool response about my personal opinion on a film. I really love the condescending nod to Disney movies. Do you feel cooler now? I hope you feel so cool and it helps you get through your day. 👍

Bartos Marcell

In my read the child is Costigan's (Leo), that's why she just walks away. She tried to tell him something when he gave him the envelope, they slept together and it's reiterated that Matt Damon's character's "equipment" doesn't function properly.

Tay Schumaker

Great movie, but that rat running across at the end is so bad

James B

My biggest disappointment with this movie is that this is finally when the academy decided to recognize Scorsese's work. He was snubbed so many times it was frustrating. Now I don't care much for the academy at all, so it doesn't bother me as much.

Mr. Writhms

[Simone farts] "It was my cellphone case! No, really!"

Michael

Great movie, also I like the color of that hat.

tullius cicero

i always interpreted it that she was carrying leos child, not damons. Great Movie

Justin Wolford

The therapist doesnt know who the father is 🤣🤣🤣

AstralCars

Taxi Driver (1976) for the next Scorsese movie please! 🙏

Stephanie

1. Anthony Anderson's character did not just know Billy from the Academy. He was there when Billy came in to get the money and his identity back. He knew that Billy was the undercover cop because Sullivan told him right before he said "I can't believe it...I know him from the academy." 2. The guy on the picture with Costello was the FBI guy who participated in the meetings at the beginning. 3. The envelope that Billy gave Madeline probably included instructions to give information about Sullivan to Dignam (Mark Wahlberg). 4. I think Dignam was suspicious of Sullivan and he did care for Billy and for Queenan. That's why he treated Sullivan the way he did and attacked him after Queenans death.

Trevor S Bright

It's actually implied that the baby is Billy's, so when Colin asks her about the baby at the funeral, she was like "fuck it, it ain't his anyway".

Trevor S Bright

Scorsese did do a remake. His 1990 "Cape Fear" was a remake of a 1960s "Cape Fear", a thriller that was made more horror-ish when Scorsese did it.

Logan Kerlee

Yeah! This one has a STACKED cast! This movie's excellent! I'll be shocked if you both don't wind up enjoying this. :) I don't think that I've watched the original ever - but I may've. LUL, thanks George for saving that 'til the end. :) lmao, I loved the blood spatter from that woman! You could see her brain matter splode from the other side of her forehead! lol, I love the soccer game! lmao, good job George! Happy that you recognized that. The song is excellent, for sure! Did you two miss them saying "the departed" in this scene? Saw/heard no reaction so I'm not sure. His character is MEGA charming, yeah. :) lol, as long as you're able to enjoy yourself, Simone it's cool. I'm 100% with you George on her being dreamy. She's perfect. Patriot Act allows them to survey and watch without notice or involvement with the law at all, which means they didn't need to clear anything with the courts beforehand. lol, you're actually a little past halfway through the movie at that point, George. lmao, I juat stopped commenting on this1 Normally I'm better at keeping up with it all as I watch but this movie just wrapped me up in it and held my attention. I really enjoyed watching this with you both! It's awesome that you watched the foreign edition of this movie already, George. Glad that you both enjoyed this, though! This movie's awesome and it's really cool how it all played out. :)

akaTheBARON Tokyo Drift

🖤 Just one of those comments I make during the intro before the movie even started but... Sureeeeeee Simone... it was "the phone case" that made that noise.... (WINK WINK)

Odd Thomas

Not a fan of this one. I do however love Scorsese's Shutter Island. Absolute masterpiece.

Tenn Seven

I don't know if it's a remake, but it's a lot more than "inspired" by Infernal Affairs. It copies a lot more than mere "inspiration" could credit, though I don't think it's a copy either. A "remaking" or "re-imagining" would be closer to the mark.

Daryl

Super rad anecdote i got from the internet! Great reaction!

Patrick

This is why she needs a dog instead of cats, easier to blame for farts.

Patrick

I'll 2nd that. Shutter Island might be his most underrated movie. It's wild how many times Scorsese works with Leo, but I suppose that's typical when a director finds an actor they love working with. The ending of that movie is literally perfect.

akaTheBARON Tokyo Drift

🖤I think... I THINK... the implication for the pregnancy was it was Billy's baby. Not Colin's. Her and Billy had their affair. Not sure if it was a one-off fling as far as the knocking of the boots aspect part of it goes. They were meeting each other constantly to talk but I'm only certain they slept together the one time. All it takes is one time tho. Also Colin was dealing with E.D. (aka "Cookie Dough PeePee) that they made references to one or two times. Also why he was quick to over-compensate with the "Oh its wurken... OHVA TIME" line. So that's my take. I don't think the baby was aborted, I think she kept it because it wasn't Colin's kid anyway. That looks she gave Colin at the funeral was more knowing what a monster he actually turned out to be. There was even that part where she was going to tell Billy something and he said "wait 2 weeks and if you still want to tell me tell me then" THEN it cuts to her telling Colin Sonogram/ultrasound. And she wasn't shy about how she isn't above lying to keep things on an even keel. So she may have figured Billy may have not been in the best place to be a father, and she ended up deciding not to leave Colin so just decided to tell Colin the kid was his. I could be wrong. Would love it if someone can point out (politely) concrete proof as to why this isn't the case, I very well could have missed something. But I've seen this movie 10+ times, that's always been my take.

E. D.

I watched this the first time with you guys now and I like it. Almost thought there´ll be an Arlington Road ending.

E. D.

A shame is that The Color Purple was nominated for 11 Oscars and won none. Whoopi got a Golden Globe at least.

akaTheBARON Tokyo Drift

🖤I would encourage them to watch Shutter Island as I can see why people like it, and I did... for the most part... but... DO NOT WATCH the trailer XD. I don't think they make a point to do so for most of the movies they watch. I know sometimes one or both of them only know the title and not much else until they start recording. But I'll throw out the warning anyway. I watched the trailer and it spoiled the movie for me on accident. It wasn't their intention but it primed my thinking going into the movie to think a certain way and it robbed me of what could have otherwise been a great movie-going experience. I recall others having the same gripe. Can't get into any of the specifics, and I'm not saying it outright spoils the movie... Just don't watch is XD. Side note, since George mentioned Blood Diamond, that's also a solid flick. I've seen it recommended multiple times already so I think it's on their spreadsheet somewhere. But another solid Leo flick.

Koonce

Patriot Act was some malarkey the US Feds pulled after 9/11 to increase their surveillance powers.

Koonce

Other good movies with Vera Farmiga include Running Scared and The Conjuring. Loved the reaction!

Michael LaPorte

I imagine Scorcese's joke about this being his first film with a plot is about how his movies tend to be more character studies than sequences of events.

Bennett Holleman

Scorsese's movies have always been about characters driving the story rather than the story driving the characters. That's what he meant about this being his first film with a plot.

FranciscoGios

For being a member for 2 1/2 years I swear I thought you guys already reacted to this masterpiece, I forgot to put this on that pole. But for the sakes of Hollywood If I may to Leonardo DiCaprio turning down the Oscar for that year I think that every actor/actress could only get One supporting Oscar per film & per year. I might of read that Mark Wahlberg played an Irish cop that helped takedown Irish/Italian gangsters 🤓, in what years? I might of forgotten.

Wrencher86

Bringing Out the Dead (great movie, highly recommended) features plenty of swearing, too. That's a very... strange criticism for an R-rated film about Boston gangsters. What were you expecting? And how is Will a "bad person" just because he swears? The slurs, sure. But it's Boston in the early Aught's. Again, what are you expecting?

djKENTO

Wow you convinced me! I now love this movie and rewatching it today was the best experience of my life. You did it! You changed my taste which has been cultivated over 40 years of watching thousands of movies at different developmental stages of my life. All with one comment! Is that what you expect when you try to debate a personal opinion? Stop doing this. Nobody likes it. I’m allowed to not like the movie for literally any reason and it’s okay. You’re not wrong for liking it either. Love it. I don’t care. Just stop to debate personal taste. It’s tedious and leads nowhere. It doesn’t affect you.

Wrencher86

You OK, buddy? Pointing out that having an issue with swearing, of all things, isn't exactly a deep or useful critique of a film hardly justifies getting this defensive about your personal tastes. You offered your opinion on a film in an open forum, some of us responded. That's called a discussion. If you're not open to discussion, maybe don't post in the first place?

djKENTO

I already made it clear that I wasn’t interested in defending my opinion. Then you asked me to do that anyway. Just because it’s an open forum doesn’t mean you’re entitled to my time or that I have to do what you want or respond how you want. I hope you have a great rest of your weekend.

djKENTO

I blocked him but got one last notification that said “you must be fun at parties” I don’t go to parties where people debate why a stranger is wrong for disliking a 20 year old movie. That’s not fun anywhere. Especially at parties.

Mitchell Bowker

On Mark Wahlberg's character Dignam, something I only just realised is he isn't being an asshole just to be an asshole. Queenan and Dignam are doing a kind of good/cop bad cop routine, and Dignam's insults and taunts are very specifically utilised to break down Costigan's defenses. Probably necessary with the type of hardened closed-off people raised in those rough neighbourhoods needing a bit more of a harder push to open up. If you go back and watch again, you'll notice once Costigan has dropped his defenses and comes to a point of vulnerability then Dignam softens his tone and can level with him directly, no bullshit.

simon brouillard

Great reaction 😀 another movie that I love about an undercover agent: Donnie Brasco with Depp and Pacino, also Lawrence of Arabia😉

Jesse Coombs

If you want to see more of Matt Damon being a really good liar, I highly recommend "The Talented Mr. Ripley". It's a really good, sexy thriller. Also stars Cate Blanchett, Jude Law, and Phillip Seymour Hoffman.

ChickensAreRacist

The Patriot Act was/is a controversial law giving the government rights to tap everyone’s phones and violate other privacie. It’s all as a result of America’s fear of another 9/11.

Jacob King

The other thing you need to understand about Dignam is he’s an ex-undercover guy. He’s there to show us what’s going to happen to Billy if he survives. His mind is, um, not going to work so great. The reason they all respect Dignam is they sent him to hell and he came back.

Jacob King

Police in America and the commonwealth countries have bagpipes at funerals because it’s a military instrument in British regiments and because they’re super loud and intimidating. Also in the colonies the work of policing was typically done by Scottish and Irish people. The stereotype of an American cop in 19th and early 20th century America always has an Irish accent. Whitey Bulger the Boston gangster Frank Costello is based on was an FBI informant. He was a pure psychopath who got away with a lot of violent crimes thanks to his fed connections. He was also a victim of the MK-ultra programme but I don’t think the two facts are related. You noticed the rat at the end but I don’t know if you saw that every time some is about to die there is a red cross (X) on screen. There are lots of fun gags like that throughout. My favourite Scorsese. Shipping up to Boston isn’t even the best Dropkick Murphys song. Also the other great Boston Crime Movie of the 2000s is Gone Baby Gone. It’s phenomenal. Amy Ryan was Oscar nominated, Michelle Monaghan will break your heart, Casey Affleck’s second best work. Truly a great movie.

Taylor Stuckey

The subtle implication is that Matt Damon's character is gay. His repeated gay jokes, trouble getting it up, other little things.

Ricardo Alanis

This is one of the few movies I’ve seen in theaters and instantly knew it would win the Oscar for Best Picture and deservedly so.

Ricardo Alanis

I think the impression I got is that the baby was Costigan’s because they had alluded to Sullivan’s performance issues.

Keerit Thind

Personally, I found Vera Farmiga rather wooden in The Departed. She was also in Running Scared the same year where I fell in love with her. Sooo insanely hot. Running Scared is also Paul Walker’s best movie imo. One of the most underrated genre pics of the last 20 years.

Wrencher86

+1 for Sexy Beast. Winstone is great in it but Kingsley does legendary work as one of the most terrifying psychopaths ever put on film. McShane is plenty scary in it, too.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Definitely, Kingsley steals the show, it's crazy how he could play GANDHI, and one of the scariest gangsters ever. And Ian McShane is great, but I think I'll always know him as Al Swearengen from Deadwood and Mr. Wednesday in American Gods.

Opti_Frog

It's quite rare for me to not remember anything from a movie i've watched, and it's a pretty clear sign that i didn't enjoy it much. I've only seen The Departed once, and the only thing i remember is some hullabaloo in or around a lift. I'll be interested to see if this film makes more of an impression this time around.

Philipp Roensch

One of my favorite movies and a great reaction from you guys, great time! I'll do a rare thing and defend Mark Wahlberg's character with my take: he is such a competent cop, from scene one with Leo's character, he sees not the cop but great rat Billy could make. While for Matt's character Colin, he does not trust ever. Making Dignam the most rightfully correct cop in that whole unit. He plays a sweary racist bastard though, so that is the joke.

Eric Hernandez

I agree with Ricardo, the fact that the baby was Costigan's was implied by the "performance issues" of Sullivan. She obviously couldn't tell him when she presented him with the sonogram that it wasn't his, since at that time she planned on a future with him. I think that was Scorsese's way of showing that a part of Costigan lives on with her. Also, it has been a long time since I watched Infernal Affairs but I remember the elevator scene pretty close to what happens in The Departed, right? I actually saw Infernal Affairs and loved it and when The Departed came out I had no idea it was a "remake" until I watched it. As I was watching it, things started to look familiar and then it dawned on me. I know there was the added ending of Dignam getting revenge on Sullivan, where as Lau gets away in the end, but the hero dies in both and it is revealed that there was another rat, who also ends up dead. I could be completely wrong so please let me know if I'm remembering things incorrectly. I'll have to do some work on the old Google machine to find out I guess. lol

ChickensAreRacist

Bag pipes. I googled and it made sense, saying back in the day (1800s forward) many Irish and Scottish immigrants could only get ‘dirty’ jobs, and very many became cops.

ChickensAreRacist

I do buy into the theory that Sullivan was a closeted homosexual. As you said, there are numerous inferences. To me, those inferences add up to why he’s ’a good liar’, cuz he’s been hiding/lying his whole life. That’s not very far into helping the plot along, but I think it helps.

DennisW

Patreon from Hong Kong here! Someone's probably answered this already but the HK film name "無間道" actually refers to the "Endless Hell" which is the lowest level of hell in Buddhism where one would be stuck there and be never able to live another live. So it kinda fits the "Infernal Affairs" English title, which is also a wordplay on "Internal Affairs" as in the police devision; most importantly it summarizes the situation of the 2 main characters perfectly, even in the context of a traditional religious background of HK triad gangs and the police department. (Sidetrack -- interestingly, both the triads and the police worship the same god Guan Yu which was based on an ancient Chinese warrior who symbalizes loyalty, bravenss and strength.) For those who love The Departed, I'd highly recommend to watch Infernal Affairs. The armcast breaking, laywer scene, Queenan's death right in front of Billy, rooftop scenes, even the "she's ignoring us she must be a cop scene" are classic scenes in the original. Even some of the music was heavly inspired by HK version, especially those moody electric guitar solos.

Carlos Hurtado

You two should check out There Will Be Blood (2007)

Khalayx

Maybe it's just me, but the shot of Vera Farmiga walking past Matt Damon without a word is so reminiscent to me of the final shot of The Third Man. Which is one of my favorite moments in cinema. Incidentally, probably not quite popular enough a classic for these two, but I wish they could do that one.

Khalayx

Aye, this. I think it's why it comes up at least two or three times.

Khalayx

@Taylor I had never considered this, but will the next time I watch this. Interesting / makes sense.

Flori85

Yeah, that'd be great and a movie you both could enjoy I guess

Astraeos

Random movie suggestion that just came to me watching this now. Up in the Air (2009). Has George Clooney and Vera Farmiga, and its kind of hard to classify as a movie. Its genre is Drama/Romance, but its got a lot to it. Its really good actually, and deals with a lot of different themes. I'd highly recommend it. Also, if you really wanna see Jack Nicholson in a totally different sort of role, and also a really young Jack Nicholson, you really need to pencil in both Easy Rider and One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest. Both highly, highly culturally significant movies, and also both really really good.

Al Karnov

When he says I'm your only friend he means it! He basically walked off the job rather than give up the names

China Andronicus

Always here for the works of Graham Greene. Brilliant author. The Quiet American is another of his that didn’t get much notice but is equally excellent, starring Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser.

China Andronicus

They honestly should have suspected Matt Damon when he shut off the camera when he went in to pretend to be that guy’s lawyer. It was just so his men couldn’t see him while he told the other man to warn Costello. That should have been a major tip off. Why prevent your men from seeing your interaction?

Scott Pearson Eberly

Scorsese had never worked with Pacino when making The Departed in 2006. In 2019, Scorsese’s The Irishman they finally worked together when Pacino played Jimmy Hoffa.

Paul P

Such a great film! Wonder if you would watch The Boondock Saints

pinkdino99

Infernal Affairs is actually a trilogy in which there is no Dignum character, and Sullivan's character completely gets away with it. IA2 is a prequel and one of the best movies I have ever seen. IA3 is a sequel, which is impressive as everyone is dead. More like this.. CopLand - Robert de Nero, Sly Stallone (in a proper acting role), Harvey Kietel (Mr Wold), Ray Liotta (Goodfellas) and John Spencer (West Wing) in a James Mangold (Logan) thriller that is really special. The King of New York - Walken, Larry Fishburne and David Caruso (CSI Miami) in arguably their best roles with Wesley Snipes and Steve Buscemi in a grimy 90s crime thriller

Redrum Ritual

I completely disagree with George about Mark Wahlberg's character Sargant Dignam . George is using that word "unlikeable" very loosely. Dignam was very likeable. A lot of guys like that are really likeable by their peers and others around them. Dignam is a bad ass who wasn't intimidated and uncorrupted. Billy had family members who were criminals and Queenan and Dignam are seeing if Billy is like his family or is he the good egg so to speak. Just because George didn't like him for some reason. If you go back and look for the X easter eggs. Every time you sae an X by someone, they were going to die.

Naturekitty5309

Leo is an acting prodigy. If you need proof check out whats eating Gilbert Grape?
