When I watched this in cinema I remember being very impressed with myself for recognising the S-Y-M-B-O-L-I-S-M with the colour choice, and was told afterwards that everyone caught that, it was quite obvious and indeed a central part of the movie's aesthetic. I'll have to watch this over the weekend, I don't think I've seen it in over 15 years.

Garin

Let's goooo! About to watch/listen to this while coding.

So happy for Simone getting to see this for the first time. The cinematography, score and (of course) the fight choreography are amazing and blew me away when this came out. The colour theming in this movie is wonderfully used for the story and world by Zhang Yimou. Tarantino was also the one who convinced distributors in the US to bring the movie over which thanks to him is how I saw it all those years ago when it hit indie cinemas Down Under. Also now I have Chad Kroeger “Heroing” in my head hahah

Alexrandom

Didn't know you guys were going to do this! So happy right now. I love this film :)

Martin

Nice surprise. I’ve had this movie on my list to watch for years, but have never got around to it.

SnabbKassa

With practice I think I just cracked the x sound in Wuxia. I move the tip of my tongue from right to left, further back than a sh sound, nearly touching the roof and forcing air across.

JayF

Love that you picked this. Still hoping for a House of Flying Daggers reaction. :)

Stephanie Bedworth

Oh, nice. I love this one and I was not expecting a reaction to it ever.

Bryce Lamkin

I recommend Son's of Anarchy as a show to watch please, it has 7 seasons

Johnny Liu

I remember watching this all the time as a kid back in 2004 lol. So much nostalgia for this. Really great pick for Chinese New Year.

djKENTO

in the 90s QT convinced Miramax to open Rolling Thunder Pictures where he would import small but cool films form around the world. He brought over movies by Wong Kar-wai, Takeshi Kitano, bunch of weird shit from Shaw Brothers… this folded and eventually Miramax started doing it on their own. Iron Monkey and this were two that QT really pushed for. The Matrix was a huge help with Woo Ping Yuen’s work like Iron Monkey. The early 2000s Asian cinema boom on DVD was kinda glorious. Our video store had a whole fucking wall after The Matrix came out. It was awesome.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Very true! Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon had also whetted the curiosity and familiarity with Chinese cinema around this time too. For the studio to be apprehensive over this film’s appeal a year after the former was a huge hit shows how lucky they were to have QT waring down their ignorance for lack of a better word.

djKENTO

Weird that Revenge of the Sith also starts with text about a war, a ruthless emperor and there being heroes on both sides…

Prof. Writhms

Well, now you've done it. You watched "Hero". Now you HAVE to watch "Fearless" (2006). Then go back and see the ultimate Jet Li movie... "Fist of Legend" (1994), which was a remake of Bruce Lee's "Fist of Fury" (1972). So then see that one as well. 😉

Ghost Dog

What a treat. Be asured, the love for these movies is shared and these reaction videos are greatly appreciated.

E. D.

I watched it in movie theatre when it came out - beautiful movie.

Adverb

A very beautiful movie whose overall message is unfortunately pro-authoritarian.

AstralCars

Wong Kar-Wai movies for Chinese New Year please! Chungking Express (1994) In The Mood For Love (2000)

mky

This genre could generate an endless list of well-deserved recommendations, but I'll just suggest a couple for now. It's possible that others have already suggested these... Fearless, a.k.a Jet Li's Fearless (2006, Ronny Yu) House of Flying Daggers (2004, Zhang Yimou) --- And a random recommendation that has nothing to do with this genre: Time Bandits (1981, Terry Gilliam) Cheers!

Martin

From this genre, House of the Flying Daggers is my favorite. Would love a reaction to that.

Odd Thomas

Visually stunning, but rather empty of emotion, particularly when compared with Crouching Tiger. An underrated martial arts movie: The Assassin.

Odd Thomas

Hiroyuki Sanada is the captain in Sunshine (2007) which is one of my all-time favourite sci-fi's. (edit: I thought he played the King in Hero but apparently not!)

Max Krause

I think the Philosopher's Stone thing wasn't about Americans not knowing what a philosopher is, but that they expected Americans to associate it with "boring".

Florian Geyer

Another awsome Jet Li movie, Fearless. Please in the directors cut :)

BlindPanda

This has always been a favorite of mine. Certainly an underrated movie.

benjamin freeman

Please do unleashed such an underrated movie one of my favorites!

Shonnicus

Err my sneaky pick with Jet Li and Jackie Chan is: The Forbidden Kingdom (2008).

Fathervon

Loved this reaction. Been a member for a few months now, may I suggest watching (Mr. and Mrs. Smith), starring Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. I think you guys would love it.

Gary Fixler

I admit, I'm *very* slightly disappointed you didn't release a reaction to Groundhog Day today, acting like you hadn't seen it until a few minutes in, and then being like "Wait, we've seen this... wth?" and then just watching the whole thing over again and re-reacting to it.

Shonnicus

Tony Leung Chiu-wai performance was incredible. I believe it was the hair that got me. The way they lit and shot Maggie Cheung Man-yuk reminded me of In the Mood for Love. The camera does love her. I'm sure George has watched Shadow (2018) by Yi-Mou Zhang. The black and white coloration is spectacular.

droodly

I don't know how, but I guess I missed this when it came out. It was absolutely beautiful! Was the actor that played Broken Sword the same that played Shang-Chi's father? This was awesome!!!

Jacob King

The same with Northern Lights/Golden Compass? I think the real reason is the American publisher after buying an already successful book had to do something to establish that any subsequent success was because of them and not because of Rowling or Bloomsbury. It happens in movies all the time. Harvey Weinstein was notorious for cutting down foreign movies so when they were hits he got the credit. American audiences, in my experience, aren’t really dumber than anyone else. Edit: I commented before watching the reaction - duh, of course this was the context.

Grumblefunk

hmm we do all love Jet Li and guess who co-stars in Lethal Weapon 4.. better finish that franchise!

REDR58

With regard to the leaves, it seems like there was some visual effects enhancements/additions (as with the obvious CGI cloud of arrows). I don’t know how it would be possible to get the leaves to move like that without some sort of enhancement. At the very least, the ones spinning around in the whirlwind. Some of the shots of the army are likewise enhanced, but a lot of it is just many, many extras.

Robert da Spruce

The director, Zhang Yimou, also directed the opening and closing ceremonies for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing. He also directed the 2022 Winter Olympics ceremonies. But the Summer Olympic ceremonies really blew me away with the sheer scale and synchronization of so many performers

Grandalf

Wow, I can't believe I forgot how beautiful that movie is. Thanks guys! Also, it's chilling to hear the masses demanding that their tyrant king be tyrannical and execute Nameless at the end.

Garin

Dropping a request for House of the Flying Daggers :)

Roxolan

Yay yay yay, first time one of my requests get done and it's everything I'd hoped for. It's actually great that George had seen it before and was able to provide support and context, while Simone's reactions were delightful, and the film itself of course amazing.

Jacob King

"...a country without borders." Ugh, heartbreaking. This is such a beautiful film. As an Australian, I am obligated to point out that, Wong Kar-Wai regular, Christopher Doyle was the cinematographer so it was shot by the same guy who did In The Mood For Love. His IMDB is full of beautiful movies, if I was to recommend one for the channel it would be Rabbit-Proof Fence. It's in the heart-shattering range but truly incredible.

Jeff I.

Rabbit-Proof Fence would be amazing to see here! Such a good movie.

Lola Lirola

Oh, it's here, it's here!! Damn, this movie is amazing. Just mind-bogglingly gorgeous in every way. The reaction was amazing, and I wanted more! I would love to know all the inside tidbits I inevitably miss as a westerner. It's also a shame that apparently these kinds of videos perform poorly??? I mean, everyone and their mother has reacted to the same bunch of 80s classics, if I'm here it's because of the unique perspective I can't get anywhere else! (which is also, btw, why I can't wait for Simone to sit George through You've Got Mail) In any case, what a delight this is. Happy approaching New Year!

Astraeos

I'm so excited for this. Just got home, its absolutely DUMPING snow, probably gonna be over a foot very soon, and now its time to watch Hero. I can't wait to see Simone's reaction to this just absolutely breathtaking movie. I actually saw this before I saw Crouching Tiger, right around 2002 when it came out, and this movie just absolutely set me on the path of loving these types of Chinese Epics and Hong Kong movies and all of it. Gonna credit Rush Hour as well, definitely left its impression on my about to be teenage mind. This is gonna be great. I know Simone is gonna walk away from this one with a whole bunch of thoughts

DennisW

If you like the performance and chemistry between Tony Leung and Maggie Cheung, you must watch In the Mood for Love. It's a masterpiece.
