Bonafide classic. As someone who doesn’t even like romantic comedies. It takes one to be super well written for me to like it. Which this one is. Plus amazing performances from Cuba and Tom. All the women in this flick are great too. Cameron Crowe killed it with this. Almost famous is a slight bit better film. But this is definitely my most watched Cameron Crowe film by far.

Jason Pratt

Yay! For more TC I recommend Cocktail and CGJ, Men of Honor with Robert Deniro

Funniest sex scene nomination... Team America

OMG this movie is so good. Great to see you having the same reactions as those who were old enough to watch it the first time around, but so many years later, yes: the leaving scene is so awkward, yes: the kid is so cute.

michael clarke

glad i got to revisit this movie this way. it was so impactful when it came out that the satire kinda overshadowed the film. felt like everyone was running around joking on "show me the money" or "you complete me". seeing it win the poll i kinda eye rolled, but yeah, i can remember why it was so significant. romantic comedies typically there isnt any reflection on how insane it actually is. the film is somewhat self critiquing just by having the characters be aware that their choices are fucking nuts. i looked up Jonathan Lipnicki (the kid), all i can see of note when he was around that age was stuart little and stuart little two. no idea if either are worth watching because i havent seen them.

If you wanna dive into “Tom Cruise: Actor” there’s Rain Man, the Color of Money, Born on the 4th of July, and Magnolia. He did another Cameron Crowe movie, Vanilla Sky, but it’s pretty flawed. Tom Cruise did a Stanley Kubrick movie: Eyes Wide Shut (although it was posthumously neutered). Legend is considered an 80s fantasy classic. Personally, I’ve always had a big, inexplicable soft spot for Ron Howard’s Far and Away.

Jason Pratt

When Rod hit his initial contract and his wife said reject it and become a free agent. Him telling Jerry to bet on me like I bet on you- if he got injured his career would be over, no contract offered by anyone. She was telling him to work without a net and prove he was worth more $.

michael clarke

plus one for eyes wide shut, magnolia and vanilla sky. yes i only like tom cruise when hes in something fucking weird. lol.

A Red Mage Named Blue

Just FYI, your First Blood reaction is currently unavailable on Youtube

Cinebinge

sadly that video has been taken down by the studio with a forced strike, a 'remove in 7 days or channel is taken down' kind of offer. not much we can do. its just gone for ever :/

- I know Tom Cruise the Action Star is an institution these days, but I miss this Tom Cruise, who wasn't afraid to be silly and vulnerable. He did so much more of this in the 80s and 90s. - Jonathan Lipnicki is also in Stuart Little. (He's been in a lot more stuff, including recently, but Stuart Little is him when he's still this little cutie patootie and it's probably his biggest role apart from this.) - Yes, it's that Clarence Thomas. I don't know how much you know about the sexual harassment allegations against him by Anita Hill, but that was a big story just a few years before this movie. We all had to hear things like "Long Dong Silver" and "there's a pubic hair on my coke" every night on the news. - Cuba Gooding Jr. won an Oscar for this, and I highly recommend looking up his acceptance speech. - "Show me the money" was a pretty huge meme at the time, and I'm not a bit surprised "You had me at hello" sounded familiar as it's become one of the most famous romantic movie lines of all time.

One of the best romantic comedies of the 90s. Cruise, Zellweger, Gooding, and Lipnicki give pitch-perfect performances and fully-realized characters full of dimension and weight that’s complimented by whip-smart dialogue. I don’t like watching romantic movies or sports, yet this is a great example of how perfect writing, acting, and directing can make me fall in love with movies like this. Definitely consider putting Crowe’s Almost Famous on a future poll. Probably his best film.

TechPriest

Favorite thumbnail work thus far. It's perfect.

Jeff K

Not to mention the "You had me at hello" (not to mention "You complete me") were referenced in the Ted Lasso episode in season two when Roy comes back to coach the team. First, Ted says, "You complete... our team." And then at the end, obviously, Roy says, "Shut up. You had me at 'coach'." There's another Jerry Maguire reference coming up in season three, so I'm glad they watched this so that they'll be able to spot it when it happens.

Jeff K

"work without a net" - that's a good way to put it. Jerry wanted him to take the guaranteed bird in the hand, because doing otherwise was a big risk in such a violent sport where anything can happen.

One of my favorite things about this channel is watching Simone react to great love stories - she really digs into them with her whole heart. It's so sweet. So I definitely recommend the following romantic films for the channel: - Brief Encounter (1945) - Doctor Zhivago (1965) - Harold and Maude (1971) - Mississippi Masala (1991) - Chungking Express (1994) - The Before Trilogy - Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004), Before Midnight (2013) - The English Patient (1996) - Shakespeare in Love (1998) - Love & Basketball (2000) - Portrait of a Lady on Fire (2019)

CD

+1 for Almost Famous; and Say Anything… (it’s stylized like that) is also worthy. (I love Singles, but it was so “of its time”, I’m not sure how well it translates)

JoeE

Would also recommend almost famous and go

Henry Sanchez

Movies I’d love to see make a poll and win - Blindspotting (2018) - Glengarry Glen Ross (1992) - Hell or High Water (2016) - Little Miss Sunshine (2006) - Shutter Island (2010) All of these are in my personal top 40 movies of all time and I’d love to see your guys reactions to them.

CD

And…after all the controversy in the poll……they LOVED it! Already looking forward to Amadeus. (Does YT block Classical music, the way it does Popular?)

CD

I’d pay $100, if they could de-monetize Glengarry Glen Ross; so it wouldn’t be, 20 minutes of *bleeps*…lol.

A Great "Rom Com" That "Guys" Enjoy... A Film Where "Show Me The Money" Meets "Show Me The Love"...

What? What the heck is this?! I was promised Jerry McGuire, not this cheap knockoff! Boooo! Refund!

If Simone sees the Before... trilogy, I imagine her heart is going to explode. Not sure that's a good idea ;) They are also a very quiet and meandering movies in the vein of 'Lost in Translation', only even more so. Not the most action-packed reactions. That being said, I would love to see G&S react to 'Before Sunrise', at least. To my mind one of the most romantic movies ever made.

Jeff K

Hmm... that's a good question. Mozart's music is in the public domain, but does that cover the versions done specifically for a movie that still falls under copyright laws? I assume not, but I'd never really thought about that.

Happy Hanukkah

Indirectly related to this. We have Cuba Gooding Jr in this movie, and we recently saw Brian Dennehy for (at least) the second time on this channel in Tommy Boy. (After the late departed Rambo First Blood, of course.) I was reminded of the 1992 film Gladiator (no, not the famous one) featuring both of them. Gladiator is a movie set in a world of underground boxing featuring a 53-year-old Dennehy as a promoter, CGJ, and James Marshall (from Twin Peaks, in his one opportunity as a leading man). [THESE CLIPS CONTAIN SPOILERS! (The entire movie is very easily available, nudge nudge wink wink*.)] I'm not sure which of the following is more bonkers: 1. A short clip of Dennehy interacting with CGJ: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ldJbu1RIA4c 2. The climactic final fight: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7_BdZawlxUU 53 years old, dude. (* This is not a recommendation of the movie itself, hence my providing clips.)

Jeff K

Seeing others throw out some movie suggestions so I'll throw a couple too: Breaking Away - incredible coming-of-age movie, sports-adjacent, with some brilliant writing (it won an Oscar for the screenplay) and a great young cast with some faces y'all will probably recognize. Defending Your Life - in my opinion, the best "afterlife" movie ever made, starring Albert Brooks and Meryl Streep (and written by Brooks). IMO, possibly Hank Scorpio's best work. LA Story - this one would be fantastic for February/Valentine's Day since it's definitely a rom-com, but it's a rom-com passed through the absurdist humor of Steve Martin. Great movie, hilarious, bizarre, and beautiful. The Right Stuff - in my opinion, a perfect film. It's about the Mercury Seven, the first people recruited to the astronaut program by NASA, and the space race in general. The cast is absolutely LOADED. It's a long film, but it's great. Also highly recommend the Tom Wolfe book from which it was adapted.

Jeff K

Man, I forgot about Gladiator. I used to watch that movie a ton when I was a kid since it was a cable TV staple. George and Simone have also seen James Marshall in A Few Good Men. I never watched Twin Peaks, so A Few Good Men and Gladiator are the only things I've ever known him from.

Happy Hanukkah

Given the result of the last poll, it behooves me to point out that Bonnie Hunt, who plays the sister here, previously starred in Beethoven :-) (She also shared a scene with Tom Cruise in Rain Man.)

Stugotz

I like Simone's OMG counter, if I could make a suggestion it would be funny to see a George "Okay" counter. He says "Okay" A LOT!

Jeff K

I was thinking, they need to add "OMG" and "Outrageous" merch to their store.

lmaooo the thumbnail 🤣👍

CD

Speaking of RomComs: I’ve been curious, for a l o n g time. I’m sure it MUST have come up somewhere (though I read many, but not all, comments…and I’ve yet to see it). Simone FAMOUSLY loves You’ve Got Mail; but I’ve never heard her mention Sleepless In Seattle?? For people my age (56)…YGM was a pale imitator when it came out (absolutely no offense).

Happy Hanukkah

After watching this movie, I am left with one question. Was the girl 16 or 17?

Phillyman!!

For a future poll. Definitely consider putting the movie Seven Psychopaths. 💯💯👍👍. Great reaction btw 👍

Dwight Scarn

Great movie loved seeing his character constantly struggle but refusing to give up. I always liked comparing how he played Lestat in interview with a vampire and how he played Jerry. Shows his range as an actor.

Adam K

Did they confuse Happy Gilmore with Billy Madison? Says something about Adam Sandler movies. And Clarence Thomas famously and publicly was accused of sexual harassment during his nomination process. It was a pretty, pretty big thing.

BoredLittleLady

This kid is in so some of my favorite childhood movies: Stuart Little (1999) The Little Vampire (2000) Like Mike (2002)
