horrible

Is this lore?

Byron

Huh. This was … unexpected. Of all the action movies that came out in the 90s, this was certainly one of them

michael clarke

i also had a "what?.... why?" reaction. i saw this in the drivein as a child and even then was like... huh... ... ...

Jeff K

Great, now I'm gonna spend the rest of the day growling, "Get off my plane!"

Deserana12

Yeah gotta agree with some others, I’m definitely on a cold streak with their reactions recently, some strange choices when there’s way better 2nd place Poll movies from last year that haven’t been done. I love this channel but the main thing I wish they did was some kinda explanation as to how the movies are picked. Oh well, it’s just a taste thing, I’m sure there’ll be a few soon that are more my speed.

Byron

I mean, on some level I get it. They haven’t seen the movie. It’s Harrison Ford and Gary Oldman. Action movies do well, 90s movies are popular, there are reasons why they might be interested in this. I just get snarky about it because holy crap did I hate this movie when it came out. But watching their reactions to some stuff I didn’t really like back then has made me appreciate those films a little bit more. But Kindergarten Cop better be coming soon 😜

Joe

Fuck yeah! Wasn't expecting this one. It's so much fun.

The VP is, for the most part, a completely useless position in the US government. The President can give them authority to oversee certain things but the President still has to sign off on everything. They do act as the tie break vote in the Senate if the need arises but that's about all they get to do.

Jeff K

George, you’re not wrong about the ‘90s being about high ideal presidents. That’s not even including movies like Dave and The American President (both are great, you guys should check them out) and obviously the West Wing debuted in the ‘90s as well.

thomas king

Always thought 2 cameo roles in this movie would have brought the house down. After the US fighter jets saved the President from being shot down by the MIGs they should have had Tom Cruise be the pilot that communicated with him. And have Val Kilmer pull along the other side of the plane.

Da Big Appa

Love this movie, seeing the one Russian actor it made me think if either of you guys watched October Sky? If not I think you both would love it.

Jeff K

Love that movie. Highly recommend as well. (Of course, I had forgotten he was in October Sky; the only thing I ever think of when I see him, and I know I'm not alone, is "RENT!")

Henry Sanchez

I’d love to see you guys react to The Town (2010) and Hell or High Water (2016)

Teyon Alexander

You should watch The American President that was probably peak presidential rom com .

Jeff K

They should definitely watch that, as well as Dave. The epitome of high ideal fictional presidents. And two really good rom coms, at the same time.

Doug Stevenson

I love this movie, so happy to be able to re-live it!

Jeff I.

Along the same genre, I think Good Time with Robert Pattinson would make for a great reaction too.

Happy Hanukkah

This is far from my favorite movie, but I have no problem with it. I *am* amused by the following: "Randy Newman was initially hired to write the film score; however, Petersen considered his composition to be almost a parody and commissioned Jerry Goldsmith to write and record a more somber and patriotic score." 27:03 The problem with playing along and only retaliating after all is over is that the movie's Kazakhstan has nuclear weapons. If Radek regains control of the state apparatus, retaliation becomes difficult. (This answer only strengthens the objection to actually releasing him.) I very much enjoyed the "Internationale" scene of Radek's release and comeuppance. The edit in this reaction does not do it justice (and is in fact quite poor), presumably due to copyright concerns. Too bad. 28:08 Crime... 32:05 ... and punishment.

Jeff K

Wait. Hold on. Randy Newman? That... that cannot be true. Randy fucking Newman!? If that's accurate, who in the world ever thought that'd be a good idea???

AlimonyMoney

A Vice presidents role is 2nd in line to command. They are there in case the president gets killed or out of action they take over presidential duties. Think of it as an understudy to the president.

Fathervon

When are you guys gonna watch Saltburn? I'm sure you'll like it :D

Happy Hanukkah

I'm reminded of "heir and spare." Trivia: In the original American system, the VP was the presidential candidate who came in second in the Electoral College vote. I leave the reason this was soon changed as a not particularly difficult exercise for y'all.

Steve Mastric

It’s really time to make a case for a reaction to True Romance… here’s the sales pitch: Cast: Christian Slater, Patricia Arquette, Dennis Hopper, Val Kilmer, Gary Oldman, James Gandolfini, Samuel L Jackson, Brad Pitt, Christopher Walken Director: Tony Scott (top gun, Crimson Tide, Man on Fire) Written by: Quentin Tarantino. (End of sales pitch)

RandomNevermind

Gary Oldman's Russian in general is pretty good. He clearly has an accent though. His "F***k!" in Russian sounds very authentic.

Ginger

"Action President" could also be the translated title of a cheap bootleg version of the film. xD

Josh B

GET OFF MY PLANE!!

Lachlan Smith

haha Simone's excited "OH I KNOW!" at figuring out the foreshadow to leak the fuel just made my day

Daniel Bjork

In the US what the Vice President does is mostly up to the President. The VP doesn’t have many actual constitutional responsibilities, so some VPs are more powerful/involved than others. Their only real duty is to act as President of the Senate, which allows them to cast a vote in the case of tie, which has actually come up a few times in the last several years. From a military standpoint, in a case like this where they don’t know the status of the President, the commander in chief role does not pass to the VP, instead it passes to the Secretary of Defense. If it were confirmed that the President was dead, then the VP would be sworn in as President and then take the Commander in Chief role, but in situations where the President is alive and still the President and simply unavailable, the VP’s authority is extremely limited. This was a major issue in the US on 9/11, where its very likely that the VP at that time Dick Cheney actually gave military orders to shoot down any remaining airplanes even though it was illegal for him to do so.

Happy Hanukkah

[JOKE:] My favorite airplane hijacking movie is Executive Decision (1996), which features what is undoubtedly Steven Seagal's best performance. Steven Seagal versus Hercules Poirot with Mrs Trump looking on, who could ask for more?

James Falato

A Thrilling Ride... And Gary Oldman was a Great Villain... And the Traitor didn't look to kill the Pres because once the Pres was killed the Russians would be notified They wouldn't need to release Their Political Enemy... Also, Simone, would You have the Courage of Glenn Close to NOT SIGN YOUR NAME TO AN ARTICLE 25 POLICY THAT WOULD HAVE YOU BECOME THE FIRST FEMALE PRESIDENT OF THE USA?!?

Simon Pegged Me

I disagree with the section about the commander in chief role not passing to the vice president. I know the secretary of defense is referred to as the "deputy commander in chief" and that he has direct control over U.S. military forces, but in a national emergency in which the vice president is acting president, the vice president would also assume the presidential role of commander in chief, the secretary of defense becoming her cabinet member and deputy commander. The secretary would not assume any constitutional powers of the presidency unless the other 5 officials in front of him in the line of succession were dead or unable to assume the duties of the president. The issue with Dick Cheney giving military orders on 9/11, in my opinion, is that the president was not incapacitated or unable to perform his duties at the time, so the vice president had no authority as vice president to command the military. President Bush was away from Washington, but he remained in control and in communication with the rest of the government.
