Get off my plane... and into my YouTube watchlist!

djKENTO

all time great Gary Oldman villain and a top tier “dad movie”.

Funny That

Truly said. The character never breaks the fourth wall, but he will push every one of your buttons until you want to break-through the fourth wall.

E. D.

Is this one of those surprise movies that was not on a poll? I like it!

Onno Smits

Kid me loved this movie! Adult me watched it a couple of years ago and was severely disillusioned. But I'm sure rewatching it with you guys will make it a heck of a lot more fun!

sarCC

Awesome! Even though this could be seen as Harrison Ford's third Jack Ryan movie(the character does become President in the books), I'm glad you've watched this great, fun movie.

Keerit Thind

I love my 90s Harrison Ford, and his ascent into 2000s/2010s curmudgeoned Harrison Ford. Mid 80s Harrson Ford is my favourite - Witness (1985) and The Mosquito Coast (1986). Oscar-nominated for Wtitness (his sole nomination) and criminally ignored/forgotten for The Mosquito Coast.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

RAID Shadowlegends ads for four years straight and those “gain this thing no one else is doing” take the annoying ad cake for my Youtube surfing lol. Also hope you guys enjoy the film - Gary Oldman’s an awesome villain and the number of explosions outside of Michael Bay’s work are a fun 90s trope it’s hard to get sick of

Astraeos

Niceeee choice! One of my favorites from the 90s. Can't beat Harrison Ford Action/Thriller flicks.

E. D.

I HIGHLY recommend the movie with Ford and Michelle Pfeiffer. I forgot the name of the movie but it is a quite entertaining thriller.

Gath Bard

George, since you asked: It's not just about ads being low effort...I wish! It's ads being outright scams, get rich quick/ponzi schemes, gross ads showing disturbingly graphic images, political ads often promoting hateful agendas, AI celebrity fakes promoting questionable products...all of this often unskippable. it's the fact that youtube pretends to have rules but doesn't enforce them as it should...the whole "people also watched this" spam is gross. The list of horrible ads is too long to even start to pin down the worst one, also it would probably be something gross that I wished to forget in the first place. I support creators I believe in through patreon and stuff, but I also use adblockers and channel blockers. The day Firefox blocking extensions stop working I'll most likely stop using youtube altogether.

JediLounger

More movies involving planes. One of these is really good, others are hilariously bad. And at least one is way better than it has any right to be. Passenger 57 (1992) Executive Decision (1996) Red Eye (2005) Flightplan (2005) Snakes on a Plane (2006) Plane (2023) Honorable Mention to Hijack (2023), not a movie but an excellent mini series with Idris Elba.

Christopher Feiertag

So, now that you have been formerly introduced to the work of Wolfgang Petersen, I‘ll renew my recommendation for watching his 1981 cult classic „Das Boot“. 2 tips If you should follow my suggestion: 1. I believe there exists a dubbed version but for the sake of authenticity, I highly recommend watching it in the original German with English subtitles. And 2.: there are a few versions of this that you can choose from. But only two of them are valid choices. Either the Director‘s Cut or (preferably) the 6-part Miniseries.

Bryce Lamkin

I recommend Son's of Anarchy as a show to watch please, it has 7 seasons

SnabbKassa

Well, "explodey" is a word *now*

djKENTO

Keep in mind when that guy says the VP has little to no real power, they all think that the president is still alive and it’s only a matter of time before they’re in contact with him. if that were to be true then yes, the VP has no real power at the moment.

Tomas

Oooh, yay! I loved this movie as a kid. I have a lifelong man-crush on Harrison Ford. Looking forward to watching it with you guys!

E. D.

I like Passenger 57 a lot. Bruce Payne´s performance was so good.

E. D.

Another great German worth mentioning was DOP Michael Ballhaus, who not only was the DOP of Air Force One but a lot of other big movies (not Das Boot tho). He died unfortunatelly. Aber er war auch nicht mehr der Jüngste.

DM DC

The adds I find the most annoying are when a YouTube Video actually plays as an add. Some of the videos are up to 45 minutes so basically you get a 45 minute add. NO! I refuse, especially when I can just go to that video on YouTube. I would recommend 3,000 Miles to Graceland, it stars Kevin Keven Costner and Kurt Russell

E. D.

I hate it so much when the tab with the movie freezes, then I have to pause everything and match the videos again.. so annoying. It´s not a big deal when it happens once but it happened three times in the first 45 mins, that´s why I´m gonna watch the rest of the reaction later. I wouldn´t be as pissed if my internet connection was dog shit bc I´d expect it to happen, but it´s not dog shit^^

Orphan Crippler

Enough is enough! I have had it with these m*therfucking snakes on this m*therfucking plane!, - Indiana Jones 1997

Aaron M

This movie was ridiculous when it came out. As a teenager I remember making fun of the silliness with my friends, and I haven't thought about it since. Watching it in a more modern context from an adult perspective, the cringe is beyond unbearable. Props to you guys for getting through it.

Haye Zeus

Simone has been wearing that beanie for the past 20 videos so i’m just going to assume they did them all on the same day. That’s dedication

Cincassette

Director Wolfgang Peterson also directed the German masterpiece "Das Boot" (1981). The Directors Cut is 3.5 hours long, but absolutely worth it! I'm always happy to see some non-English/American cinema representation!!

REDR58

Any US Air Force aircraft the US President is on is called “Air Force One” (or “Marine One” if he is on a Marine helicopter). “Air Force One” is the radio call sign for the aircraft the president happens to be on at the moment, not the name of the aircraft itself. (Now I’ve said “Air Force” too much. Semantic satiation!) https://www.af.mil/About-Us/Fact-Sheets/Display/Article/104588/vc-25-air-force-one/

Adam Barry

In regards to the trivia at the end - future models of Air Force One have not had escape pods or ramps, as there have not yet been any new models of Air Force One. The two current aircraft entered service in 1990, although two new aircraft are currently being built and are due to enter service in 2027.

Prof. Writhms

I download their YouTube video to eliminate any streaming playback problems. My copy and theirs, 2 hard files playing back at the same time via the VLC (free) video player. Try that?

beefjerkywizard

Not a YouTube ad but one I also seem to catch while watching any sportsball event is "Kars 4 kids". I have to mute it

Sumner Hayes

The VP has no executive authority whatsoever. Until the President dies, resigns, or is deemed unfit for office*, they're basically ceremonial outside of their legislative role (they get to cast the tie-breaking vote in the Senate if there's a tie, which is very important if the Senate is nearly tied 50 Republicans/50 Democrats). But the moment the President dies, resigns, or is deemed unable to serve then the VP immediately assumes the powers of the presidency, becomes Commander in Chief of the military, etc. So it's a weird “you have no executive power now, but you could have all the power in an instant” job. The Secretary of Defense (who is appointed by the President) is 2nd in command for the military, so if the President is merely unavailable then the SecDef calls the shots with the military. But if the president is deemed unable then the VP takes over and becomes Commander in Chief and calls the shots (and can dismiss the SecDef). "Unable to serve" is determined by agreement of both (1) the VP and (2) a majority of the heads of the executive departments (the Secretaries of State, Defense, Treasury, Labor, Interior, the Attorney General, etc, etc). In real life, no President has ever been deemed unable to serve. *The President can also temporarily hand over the Presidential powers to the VP if, say, they're getting general anesthesia for an operation or something like that. This has happened a few times (George W. Bush had a couple of minor medical procedures, Reagan had a more serious one), during which the VP took over temporarily and then returned the power to the President following the procedure. In such a situation, the VP has the full powers of the President temporarily, and would outrank the Secretary of Defense on military matters.

beefjerkywizard

I hope this opens the door to watching Ford as Jack Ryan in Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger

Odd Thomas

For more Gary Oldman in his 90s villain era: Lost in Space (1998). He doesn't just chew the scenery, he swallows it whole.

Anodyne

'Action President' - Oh Simone, your prophetic soul! Perhaps this one should have been for Cinecringe instead?

Sumner Hayes

Yep, that's the standard policy. Maybe worth noting that it's occasionally deviated from for security reasons. For instance, when Clinton flew to Pakistan in 2000, another plane—without the President on it—was given the Air Force One call sign. The plane the President was on used a "normal" call sign. The hope was any potential threats would be confused about which plane the President was on. Most recently, when Biden flew to Ukraine last year the plane was not designated Air Force One: it was given the more mundane call sign SAM060 to avoid telegraphing Biden's movements.

Odd Thomas

Better Wolfgang Petersen films: The Perfect Storm, In The Line of Fire

Odd Thomas

Kevin Costner is great, you should totally watch more of his stuff: Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves Field of Dreams JFK Open Range Waterworld (it is in no way as bad as you've heard)

Mr. Writhms

George, About Youtube ads reference: I don’t like the ads read by most Youtubers, mainly because I pay for Youtube Premium that blocks regular ads. 😝 Also because most Youtubers read the ads like high school students standing in front of the class reading an essay. I wish they would get creative with their ads, as you mentioned. It doesn’t have to be super bowl ad level creative, but at least make some effort to entertain to keep me from forwarding passed them. Hey, since I only watch your Patreon reactions lately (for over a year now), do you and Simone have a sponsor on Youtube?

ra ra rasputin

oh man youre missing out if you havent seen their adreads lmao. go watch their titan video, YT cut. about 5 mins in theres a babbel ad. all their sponsored videos are fricken hilarious.

Dioskur

I think this movie is a perfect example for the term "guilty pleasure", right? I mean, we all agree its cheesy to the max dont we? But highly entertaining.

Elbinho

Think what the president's phone bill was. A mobile call from somewhere over Eurasia to Washington DC in 1997!

akaTheBARON

🖤I too like the name Xander but don't always like people named Xander. Anytime I watch Buffy The Vampire Slayer these days, vs when I watched it when it first came out, and see Xander on screen doing his whole "Look at me, I'm wish.com Chandler Bing and think I'm funny just because I'm self-deprecating and sarcastic" routine, my inner monologue is always "Shut up Xander...Shut up Xander...Shut up, shut UP, just STF....UP!" lol

David N

I don't know if its me being a grouchy old man but I can never get as excited for things that are more recent as opposed to ones made before 2000 or so. I'm sure nostalgia plays a large role but everything from the writing to the acting seems better in older movies. Love the content, keep it up!

E. D.

I wanted to write I don´t think so but you´re clearly joking^^ I think she´s just wearing it bc it looks good on her.

Anthony Villena

I find YouTube ads so distasteful that it is the only platform I pay for to hide the ads. I agree with you on the fake game ads, and also overpriced mobile asset flips with the high energy speaker trying to do an epic voice over loot box animations.

Astraeos

I've literally done nothing different and my adblocker still works just fine on both Chrome and Firefox lol. I agree ad revenue should be a thing, but commercials are literally nothing but emotionally manipulative trash, and I'm not going to watch them. Especially when they play the same set of three commercials over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over and over I couldn't name a specific ad, literally the only time I see ads are during NFL games, and I tune out during ad breaks and barely pay attention. The worst type that I hate are the overly emotional, sappy, sad, cheesy commercials that clearly are trying to manipulate people through sadness

Astraeos

Also George, the conflicts the US would've been involved in during this time period would be Kosovo and the Yugoslav Wars. Cursory involvement though. Also Chechnya a bit I think? In all these wars it was mostly air support that the US provided

REDR58

No aircraft that has ever carried a president has ever had anything remotely like an escape pod. Other than ejection seats on many combat aircraft, there were a few high speed bombers and a test plane that had “escape pods” that were basically ejection seats that could be quickly encapsulated to protect the crew from being exposed to the environment at high speeds. The F-111 attack aircraft previously used by the USAF and Australian Air Force seats its 2 crew side by side and if they have to abandon the aircraft, the entire cockpit section breaks free and the crew can stay completely enclosed and protected as the unit parachutes down, even in a water landing. That’s as close to an “escape pod” as there is. https://youtu.be/cWoG3ciqFwo?si=bimnj2h9TvaCMS8o

I think it can also be said, that the power of the VP can also rely on the Presidents administration and what kind of role they play in the presidency from powerful Veeps like Cheney, to strong advisors like President Biden during President Obama's tenure. The modern VP is a whole lot different then the ceremonial VP's before the twelfth amendment( up until this point the Runner up in the Presidential election would become VP, there's a whole long spiel on this). And of course, in 1939, with the actual creation of the Office of the Vice President in the executive branch, the Vice Presidencey started to become more legitimate.

p0sthum4n

The vice president has no real authority or power at all. They have two roles: to be the president's understudy, and to preside over the Senate. If there is a tie in the Senate, the VP is the tie-breaker. It is widely seen as a ceremonial position that is a useful role for someone with presidential aspirations, but it is not a powerful position. Dick Cheney — who had previously been Chief of Staff to Gerald Ford, Congressman for Wyoming, the House Minority Whip, and Secretary of Defense under Bush Sr — saw the position as beneath him when offered it by George W. Bush, until they came to an agreement that Cheney would oversee a number of areas that the VP normally has no role in overseeing at all. Cheney was a vice president with an unforeseen level of power. It makes sense for the VP to be close to the president without having any real authority because is no guarantee in our system of government that the two have to be united on their agenda. Prior to the mid-19th century, the two were elected separately and didn't always have the same agenda or platform — you don't want a situation wherein the vice president works against or undermines the president's agenda. The practice of presidential and vice presidential nominees running together on the same ticket evolved around the time of the Civil War. If the president is going to be knowingly incapacitated, e.g. is getting surgery that requires them to be put under anesthetic, they will temporarily name the VP as acting president until they are able to resume their duties. If the president is killed or removed from office, the VP is first in the line of succession, meaning they are automatically made president. If the president and VP were ever simultaneously taken out of the equation for whatever reason, the Speaker of the House is next in line.

DeAndrew Greene

If you guys are looking for a comedy that's condensed but has multiple seasons then I'd recommend Veep. It's about the life of a lady vice president and it's honestly amazing.

G P

Check out the 1992 Bram Stoker's Dracula for another awesome Gary Oldman performance (and Anthony Hopkins)

Robert da Spruce

I believe the reason Secret Service Agent Gibbs was content to not do anything to help the bad guys was because he didn’t actually care about their cause. He probably turned traitor for money. He couldn’t care less about the General or the Soviet Union. When he saw his team was losing, he was content to remain silent. Let them all fail and die. And he would go home and spend his money. And like you guys said. He only revealed himself when he was going to get left behind.

Chase Schleich

The traitor was fucked either way. Either he dies on the plane or he gets convicted of treason and executed. Imagine how deeply the US government would be investigating every aspect of that hijacking. Every single person would be fully investigated. Background checks, bank statements, lie detector test, phone records, trash dug through, literally every aspect of their lives would be investigated until they were cleared of any wrong doing. So yeah, he would have gotten caught soon after. Probably better to just die on the plane.

Korpse

This, Predator and The Rock hold places in my heart when it comes to action movies...that being said I highly recommend Desperado and Bad Boys (Smith and Lawrence) 💚💯🤌🙌

Chase Schleich

They could use what Peterson saw of Air Force One along with public records for reference, but a lot about that plane is top secret so most of it's abilities, defenses, and evacuation plans (like the escape shuttle) are just guesses. That plane could have attack lasers, force fields, and invisibility tech for all we know. It's all kept top secret.

Chase Schleich

Little bit of trivia for you. The plane itself is not Air Force One. Whatever plane the President is currently on is Air Force One. That's why at the end of the film when Ford enters the rescue plane, the pilot says over the radio "We are now Air Force One." The President does have a special plane which is usually used as Air Force One, like the one in the film, but if he steps off of it and enters another plane, that new plane temporarily gets that name. If he were on a helicopter (which he often is for short transport trips), it would be called Marine One. Air Force Two is whatever plane that the Vice-President is on.

MacGuffinStuff

Yeah the Veep is basically just a tie breaker in the Senate until the President dies, in which case they're the first in the line of succession. BUT they also have an electoral significance, they are usually picked to bolster a presidential candidate's ticket, because they're considered popular among a particular set of voters that the campaign wants to attract. Yeah you gotta see Gary Goldman as Dracula, he's awesome in that, Anthony Hopkins is too.

Shelley Lloyd

The "if you give a mouse a cookie" exchange is referencing a children's book called If You Give A Mouse A Cookie by Laura Joffe Numeroff that was part of a series called If You... published in the mid-1980s. I was very popular when I was a kid about how things escalate; "if you give a mouse a cookie he'll want a glass of milk" and then his demands escalate from there.

MacGuffinStuff

Oh by the way, fun fact, in the beginning of the country the President didn't choose the VP, the President was whoever won the election and the VP was whoever came in second, which meant they were technically political opponents. The system was changed by the 12th Amendment, I think in the early 1800s.

Shelley Lloyd

Note: I was a year younger than Alice when the movie came out, so Harrison Ford's character would likely have been familiar with the books from having read them to his daughter.

WastedPo

I have the exact same opinion about ads as George. Advertising used to mean little mini-movies, essentially. They'd be shot on film, have actors, look beautiful. But the "ads" on YouTube are far different. They're cheap, ugly scams. Some of them just use stock footage and are entirely voiced by A.I. And when there are actual humans in them, it's just some random "influencer" talking to you, shot with their crappy cellphone, and selling some dubious supplements or product by some company you've never heard of. And unlike traditional television ads, the ones on YouTube just pop in randomly, so it's like getting mugged.

Alex Ch

Turbulence is a great action movie and worth a watch.

Ricardo Alanis

Also recommend Olympus Has Fallen as another President in Peril/Die Hard-y movie that is a lot of fun. Also, do you earn any money from premium youtube viewers? I hated ads so much I moved to that a while back.

Jesus F Christ

Bull Durham (1988) would be great as both a sports movie and Kevin Costner movie, since you haven't watched much of either. It also stars Tim Robbins (from Shawshank Redemption) and Susan Sarandon, and is about an aging minor league baseball player brought onto a team to mentor an up-and-coming pitcher. Bull Durham is considered to be one of the best written sports movies, is very funny, and has a lot of heart. MLB spring training starts Feb 22nd, with the season opener on March 28th - just in case you wanted to tie in the reaction to the start of Major League Baseball's 2024 season. From there, you could follow the Kevin Costner trail to The Untouchables (1987, prohibition-era gangster movie about Al Capone), JFK (1991, quasi-factual film about the JFK assassination), or Dances With Wolves (1990, epic Civil War-era western directed by Costner - Academy Award winner). Or, for more sports movies, you could watch Samwise Gamgee try to get on the Notre Dame college football team in Rudy (1993), a baseball fairy tale starring Robert Redford in The Natural (1984), or the true story about high school football in west Texas with Billy Bob Thornton in Friday Night Lights (2004). - also FNL has an excellent score by post-rock band Explosions in the Sky.

Astraeos

I literally put on Olympus Has Fallen right after watching this lol. Its kinda silly, but I honestly love that one. Didn't much care for it's sequels. I definitely would recommend Olympus Has Fallen sometime though, it has some damn great action.

Tanx

lol i love getting fake medical advice/supplement ads when watching a video debunking bad medical advice from a youtube recognized doctor. you know those scam ads that always start with "doctors don't want you to know about..." or "this video will probably be taken down soon because medical professionals don't want you to know about..." or "this simple ice trick is guaranteed to make you shed over 20lbs in body fat in 1 week." basically every single fat loss or medical ad on youtube. they are basically all bad advice, a con/scam, or just absolute pseudoscience garbage. Also the fake game ads that are disguised as a "gamer" youtuber (someone that you don't recognize at all but acts just like an influencer or gaming channel host) debunking that it's a fake game are even worse than the straight up fake games. It's so crappy how fast they will strike a channel or demonetize a video over something stupid but basically half their ads are scams.
