Sam Hill

Well this has made my day

Pepijn Schmitz

Did you originally watch the movies on the channel? I thought I saw hints of that, but could never find it.

Elder Lyons

no its like one of the films theyve repeatedly said have seen when it came out and repeatedly afterwards. i think they said during the AMA they tried to do a rewatch like this early on in teh channel and ppl really hated it so they stopped. i gues more ppl have asked for it since.

Ronny Boss

Oh happy day. Will you fine folks be re-watching the other two films as well?

Jon Johns

Okay, 1) Kate Blanchette / warm bath comment... 2) some clever writers / performers need to write a LOTR: Canadian version --> A retelling of the epic tale as if it took place across Canada.

Saddleface

I love that you mentioned Mr Bean. Because I would choose Rowan Atkinson to be Tom Bombadill.

MDvortex

I've been waiting for this! It's great that you're watching LOTR again and sharing it with us :)

JoeNotCharles

Honestly my first two choices for Tom Bombadil are in these movies already: John Rhys Davies and Sylvester McCoy. I guess the Gimli makeup changes his face enough that Davies could play a third role... It's important to get a Tom Bombadil actor who can do silly but also suddenly turn dark to reveal his terrible secret... https://km-515.livejournal.com/1042.html

Jordan Barnes

I literally said “aw yay!” And clapped rapidly when I saw this posted. I’m stoked.

Jordan Barnes

I’m just chillin at home making myself a rug by hand…. So I intentionally look for 30+ min reaction videos but I’ve already watched every single reaction you’ve posted of movies I’ve seen, so this is a lovely way to spend my morning.

Jordan Barnes

So I know George thinks this is a lil awkward but for real I would watch four hours of you watching the LOTR behind the scenes from the DVDs. The BTS footage is such a joy to watch. Sean Bean literally climbed a mountain for filming every day, in costume, because he was so terrified of helicopters.

Spacedone

Have you ever watched any of Charlie Hopkinson's comedy deepfake Gandalf videos where he's watching LOTR (or Rings of Power) with Elrond and Boromir? Worth a watch by any LOTR fan.

Pepijn Schmitz

First line that comes to mind: "Well, I'm back." Instant tears.

Pepijn Schmitz

Simone, you _must_ visit New Zealand, and if you do that, you can't skip Hobbiton. Just think of it as visiting the movie set, not actual Hobbiton, and you'll be fine. New Zealand is a pilgrimage every LotR movie fan must make.

Pepijn Schmitz

Have you guys read the book? You really should, as you especially seem to be enjoying the language, and that's all _straight_ from the book, and there's much more amazing prose (and poetry) there.

Griffin Ardill

Always wondered if you’d make it around to these movies and I’m ecstatic that you love them as much as I do

Ian Hunt

My dad used to read LOTR and the Hobbit to me and my brother at bed time as my grand dad used to so the same with him. I don’t think i’ve ever seen him happier than when we went the cinema together to see them. They mean a lot to me, these movies 🥺

Lola Lirola

omg, that's amazing! three generations of loving this story, it's so lovely!!

Lola Lirola

Me too! I honestly watch the BTS more than the movies, even. They genuinely are like attending movie making school.

Lola Lirola

It is fascinating to think about how to give someone a quick primer on cultural things that you take for granted, but this gap is so very real; when I traveled to Japan to visit a friend, I did feel like everything was 'contextless' for me, and that a lot of the stories, aesthetics, architecture that was familiar to me... simply had never ever happened there. I had to learn a lot of things! Honestly, people just straight up explaining was helpful to me, so I don't think that's a bad approach. I think for your dad, a way in can be how the story is such an allegory of WWII. I know, I know, Tolkien said it wasn't and blablabla, but let's be real: an all-engulfing evil is spreading across many lands, and threatening the peaceful way of life of the English countryside, so a young man has to leave his home for a duty he didn't ask for and doesn't know if he'll be able to carry; comes in contact with people from many origins and great differences, all in the trenches while kings and armies strategize on the sidelines... he gets tested in every way, only to find that the pure brotherhood of his fellow squad and the connection to kind-hearted people like Sam is the thing that stops him from becoming too misshapen by being in contact with evil and horror, like Gollum was. It tracks, and it might be a way for your dad to connect with it beyond the Arthurian references and English myths. Other than that, yeah, like someone recommended above, Excalibur is a great primer on the Arthurian legends and the English identity, but also try Willow, as I said above.

Cubonemaker

OH MY GOD IM SO EXCITED FOR THIS!

Wrencher86

This is cool. I don't know how it would work as, like, a regular thing. But this is a nice treat. And I say this as someone who (Blasphemy Warning) doesn't really care for these movies. They are a technical marvel and expertly made, no doubt. But the books play everything so cool and Jackson really leans into the melodrama. It doesn't help that they cut out Bombadil, who was one of my favorite characters in the books. ETA: I also don't like that they made Merry and Pippin come along as, basically, an accident. They had more agency and dedication to Frodo in the books. First line that comes to mind? It's gotta be, "ALL WILL LOVE ME AND DESPAIR!!!"

tundra

Ricky Gervais for Tom Bombadil?

Jordan Barnes

There are plenty of people whose videos I click away from if they’ve already seen the movie, but there are also several I’ll watch regardless of what they post because I enjoy them as people so much, and you two are definitely in the latter category for me. You could rewatch any movie and I would enjoy hearing your commentary.

Andrew

My college friends and I used to have a ritual where we'd watch all three of the extended cut editions back to back starting on New Years Eve morning. Hammer through a thirty rack of beer and watch until like, five in the morning. Good times.

Daniel Dreffling

My choice for Tom Bombadil would have been Robin Williams.

Dwight Donaldson

Is there a reason you didn't do this as a full length on patreon as well? Would much rather do a full watch along.

Renee MeowMeow Beans

I was lucky enough to catch all of these in the theater. I'm not a huge Tolkien fan, but boy do I love fantasy movies - and it's SUCH a great fantasy movie. The line for me is Arwen, "If you want him, come and claim him!" Just chills! And then Boromir . . . redemption, but such a cost . . . 😓

Tom M

Good question George. Bombadil should be a detached, unconcerned country bumpkin. Woody Harrelson?

Tom M

Simone would like a 90s romantic drama starring Liv Tyler and Joaquin Phoenix called Inventing the Abbotts. I’m a sucker for unrequited love with class conflict.

Zinphad

At the time, I wanted Kevin Kline for Tom Bombadil

Jeff Klonowski

No joke but we should all watch the appendices from the dvds

RawrSaur

Joined just to support this - watching LotR together is never a mistake!

Chris Noble

As a side quest can you guys check out the M4 fan edit of The Hobbit? It's the 3 extended movies cut down into a single 4 hour movie that follows the book more accurately, it's really good. Google M4 Hobbit and you'll find it
