Man, I hope that finally getting George to watch this isn’t gonna make Simone go, “Well, that’s it. I’ve reached the mountaintop. Time to hang ‘em up.” Also, I swear every time I watch this movie, I end up playing The Cranberries on repeat the rest of the day.

mojo shivers

The third best Ryan-Hanks pairing, but it’s still a winner. Now all you have to do is watch Joe Versus the Volcano to see them both of them at their best in showcasing their chemistry. They also get to play around the most, with Meg Ryan playing three separate characters.

MPH

I'm glad Simone finally gets to show George her favorite movie.

Matthew Johnson

I love the moments in this reaction when George sees Simone in this film. You guys have such a great friendship and that's why we all love coming back to this channel.

Ricardo Alanis

Another great film by Nora Ephron is "When Marry Met Sally" and "Sleepless in Seattle". Greg Kinnear (Meg Ryan's boyfriend) was also in "As Good As It Gets" with Jack Nicholson and Helen Hunt and I also recommend that.

Helly R

Have they not done When Harry Met Sally yet? Well they can now they've seen Casablanca. Best rom com of the past 40 yrs.

michael clarke

for more parker posey check out dazed and confused and more tom hanks being silly, check out big.

Dirge Girl

Som'ore "younger" essential Tom Hanks flicks to consider: The 'Burbs (1989) A League of Their Own (1992) Dragnet (1987) The Money Pit (1986) That Thing You Do! (1996)

Jeff K

It’s wild that there are people who are only familiar with Hanks as a serious actor, given he started out as a goofy and often manic comedy guy, and the big shock was when he showed his dramatic chops.

RogueRN

I'm not much on the rom-coms either, but one that I did kinda like (another with Meg Ryan) is French Kiss. it's been years since I've seen it, so I don't know if it holds up...but I enjoyed it at the time.

Zinphad

Didn't remember that Hanks was again a Joe, and with a Patricia (ala JvV). A bouquet of freshly sharpened pencils sounds menacing to me.

Jeff K

I haven't seen it in years either, but everyone could use some more Kevin Kline in their lives. And on that note, also: Dave.

Lola Lirola

Here to second A League of their Own and The Money Pit! (As someone going through a remodel soon, the Money Pit situation is very much in my mind lol!)

Lola Lirola

Seeing how delighted the comments are so far, I hope they do many more romcoms! 😄

Joits

how many years after the events of this movie before Fox Books goes out of business?

Pam Nail

- The backspace/delete button has always been where you can just hold it down -- even on typewriters (at least as long as I've been alive, i.e., the 70s). I think they were just making Joe look like an idiot. - I would highly recommend both of the other Ryan-Hanks movies -- Sleepless in Seattle (my favorite romcom of the 90s) and Joe vs. the Volcano.

Happy Hanukkah

Waitaminute! It's supposed to be three separate characters?! Damn, the movie starts making more sense now!!!

Shreddy

You should definitely do "Before Sunrise" and maybe the whole trilogy. Doesn't matter if George saw it. Simone needs to see it, she'll love it

Daryl

What even is this thumbnail xD

Hamesque

Simone is clearly surfing the world wide web. Check your mail for an AoL CD and you too could be unlocking the power of the internet!

CD

Still waiting on an answer: has Simone ever seen Sleepless in Seattle??

Oliver piercey

Has anyone suggested to you guys watching the silence of the lambs prequel and sequel , especially the prequel red dragon

Rachel W

I beg you, Simone, to watch "The Accidental Tourist"(1988) if you haven't seen it. Based on your love of this film, you'll love AT. You and George both would-such beautiful film and hilarious characters.

Seahag

Surprised nobody mentioned Big for younger Tom Hanks

Brandon Meng

I would be baffled if Simone hasn't seen Sleepless in Seattle. The two movies draw endless comparisons for obvious reasons and to this day I would say is still widely considered the consummate rom-com. My personal list of favorite rom-coms, roughly in order: Forgetting Sarah Marshall About Time Midnight in Paris Love Actually Silver Linings Playbook Lars and the Real Girl Sleepless in Seattle 500 Days of Summer The Wedding Singer Punch Drunk Love Along Came Polly The Heartbreak Kid I'd have Jerry Maguire, Eternal Sunshine, There's Something About Mary, and now You've Got Mail somewhere in that list but of course you've already seen them. And to throw in some left-field Tom Hanks, The Terminal is sadly one of his most underrated films and definitely a side of him you wouldn't expect to see. Cheers!

Simon Pegged Me

I hope you will watch The Shop Around the Corner.

All my annotations in one easily-skippable comment! 0:07 "We're finally doing *this* movie." I've finally met a worse salesman than me! 2:14 Clarence Thomas' ears perked up. 2:42 Who is this person Simone mentioned? I can't help but wonder. 4:09 "An old boyfriend of mine gave me a bouquet of newly sharpened pencils..." ... and I gave him a free acupuncture. 10:08 "You're the Julio-Claudian dynasty." Hey! I didn't come here for highfalutin historical references! If you want to spout that kind of stuff, why don't you start a history channel? 12:12 https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VisjGPx5GTQ&t=1045s 15:15 This actually reminds me that another "place" to experience Parker Posey is her memorable guest appearance on Louie. 17:17 "Close that tab?" As in a bar tab? I don't get it. :-| 18:27 Bastards! 18:49 So Chappelle was going behind enemy lines to gather material for his show and getting paid for it. Sweet! 20:16 "Everything is a joke to you." I truly don't get this, maybe one of you can help me out. She's paying him this wonderful compliment, but she's delivering it as if it were an insult. What's going on here? 20:32 Say, that fellow looks like an old-school French nobleman, someone who would have a name like "de Bergerac"... How inexplicably out of place! 23:28 "You feel like a big fat failure now." Jean Stapleton also had a delightful small role in the 1996 Michael, written and directed by one Nora Ephron. I still chuckle at her abashing of Andie MacDowell. 29:04 "This movie definitely highlights for me just how pessimistic I am." Nonsense, George! You are but a realist! :-| And I'll wrap up by sending some love to the Big Iz, Israel Kamakawiwo'ole, and his rendition of Somewhere over the Rainbow: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1bFr2SWP1I

Simone, you have great taste. This was one of my favorite movies back in the day and I must've watched it 200 times. Factor in that I also owned (and re-watched many times) the box set of the Gilmore Girls series on DVD, and I have to give you credit. Great reaction guys, that was fun.

Kinokind

When I order in coffee shops I often echo the "legal addictive stimulants" line and I, too, had a girlfriend who I told made "coffee nervous". Parker Posey was great in this. As for early Tom Hanks, I always lobby for the holy trinity of Tom Hanks comedies from the pre-Philadelphia, Private Ryan era: The Burbs, The Money Pit and Joe Versus the Volcano.

Kinokind

I get it! "Surfing the internet". Good thing I looked at it again! Kudos, George.

Alexander Sparf

Completely forgot Parker Posey is in this! She's lovely.

Happy Hanukkah

[Obscure reference, because this is the special gift that I share with youse:] Sure, her character might make coffee nervous. On the other hand, she makes sheep count *her*.

Byron

Respectfully, the Burbs and Joe vs the Volcano never clicked for me. I think maybe I was too young to appreciate them when I first saw them? I remember there being a darkly comic edge to them, and black comedy is really hit or miss for me. But I could be totally wrong. I like Turner and Hooch, Big, and The Money Pit for my early dosages of Tom Hanks

Teyon Alexander

People came into Barnes and Noble so much during the holidays after this movie came out asking for “the shoe books”. I would just quote the movie when they asked and point them in the right direction

Kinokind

I had never heard of them before this. Based on the movie reference I bought them for my daughter (but at Border's).

Terry Yelmene

Okay... okay... this... was the sweetest CB reqction of them all!

Luis Torrefranca

George is George and his name is George! Get thee to the Nut Shop! (where it’s fun)

Luis Torrefranca

Parker Posey’s performance on “Josie and the Pussycats” is amazing. The whispy feathers deserved their own credits.

oldcdog

Has Simone seen Tom Hanks in “Larry Crowne”? You should both check it out. And there is a manic pixie dream girl but I think George will like her part in the movie.

Happy Hanukkah

One of my favorite Parker Posey moments is this exchange from the Craig Ferguson show: PP: "I do watch television. I was a big Idol fan, and Planet Earth [2006]. I heard you were a fan of The Planet Earth." CF deadpan: "I like the planet Earth; it's the only one we have." PP earnestly: "No, the TV show." :-)

Erin Russo

more rom coms! =) they make me so happy

JustALilTired

Please watch Shop Around the Corner with James Stewart and In the Good Old Summertime with Judy Garland! Both are versions of this story and both are delightful!

Anonymous

I am a thirty-something (can't remember, need more coffee) year old British guy and this is one of my favourite films. I just think it's a nice story, though if you put some eerie music over it and recut it you could easily turn it into a thriller about a dangerous internet stalker.

m0lika1 .

If you guys are looking for some good earlier Tom Hanks movies my personal favourites are 'The Money Pit', 'Turner and Hooch' and 'The Burbs'. 'Philadelphia' too but that one came out in the 90's

Deadly Ramon

My favorite early Tom Hanks film is Bachelor Party. It is quite unlike any of his subsequent films, particularly the most successful and critically acclaimed ones.
