Lmfao Simone’s holy grail of films is finally here 🤣

beefjerkywizard

Sweet Sassy Molassey! Perfect Sunday movie

beefjerkywizard

Sleepless in Seattle next? Or Big? Or Turner and Hooch?

Jon

.... I suspect Simone wanted to start CineBinge JUST to watch this movie one more time lol

JayF

Obligatory "The Shop Around the Corner" (1940) request.

dieselbeast

"Tom Hanks..... Meg Ryan..... They get mail and stuff" 😂 Simone knows where that's from or at least she should lol

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Well I guess we get to see the moment of truth from George if the man enjoys it haha. I’ve always enjoyed this film since seeing it back when it came out but haven’t watched for years lol. As an aside Nora Ephron (rest in peace) was an excellent screenwriter: definitely worth checking out When Harry Met Sally for a great example of her screenwriting, and of course Billy Crystal and Meg Ryan’s brilliant chemistry.

JayF

As a dude who is not really into the genre I can say that WHMS is the best of them I've seen.

Michael Green

The prophecy has been fulfilled.

Odd Thomas

An underrated Meg Ryan film: City of Angels

Ginger

OH MY GOD YES! ❤️❤️❤️ I love this film so much. I used to watch it all the time on DVD, actually learning english from that one (and A Knights Tale) almost more that in school. I just saw "sleepless in Seattle" for the first time two days ago and am looking forward to watching this one again. :) I always forget that David Chappelle is in this. :D

Tay Schumaker

So happy you guys did this one. Rom com Meg Ryan cannot be beat. It’s probably been mentioned before but you all should give Joe vs the Volcano a watch. Same stars, but a very unique movie

UnSafeStu

Never crossed my mind that George would not know younger funny Tom Hanks as that's how I know him best. Let's start with Big (1988) and from there. Didn't realise Parker Posey was in the movie. I mostly know her from Blade Trinity (2004). Now's the time to round off the trilogy. Cheesy but some classic Ryan Reynolds.

Odd Thomas

I must confess one of my comfort movies is Nora Ephron's Bewitched

Tay Schumaker

Mine too actually. I was shocked by how much I enjoyed it. Nicole Kidman and Will Ferrell have surprisingly great chemistry. I’m not sure it’s a good movie, but I enjoy it

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

That’s a fun way to learn a language for sure. Also if you enjoyed Sleepless it is worth looking into An Affair To Remember from the late 1950s which is what Sleepless in Seattle was based on/inspired by 😀

Patrick

LOTR is to George, as You've got mail is to Simone. P.S. - I know you're self deprecating by nature George (as am I), but dude you're lookin' good. Idk if you're working out or lost some weight, but your hair looks silky smooth and you look lean. Whatever you're doing, keep it up brother.

Elder Lyons

ngl the frame captured as thumbnail for this version looks like George is in pain while Simone is giddy lmao.

Deco

Turner and hooch would be great

Joe Lazarus

You guys should add "BIG" starring Tom Hanks to the list.

JayF

Jean Stapleton is a nice surprise. I can't remember seeing her as anything except Edith Bunker.

JayF

Seeing a few suggestions for young Tom Hanks movies. I'll add "The Man With One Red Shoe" (1985) to the list.

Sumner Hayes

Curious as to whether Simone has seen The Shop Around the Corner (Jimmy Stewart) or In the Good Old Summertime (Judy Garland). Both of them are earlier adaptations of the same play that You've Got Mail is based on (Parfumerie); the latter is a musical. EDIT: And as soon as I post that, Simone says that she hasn't seen The Shop Around the Corner.

Odd Thomas

When you were talking about a horror version of this it made me think of Wes Craven's 'Red Eye'. It starts off as a meet-cute situation but turns into something more sinister.

Superpotroast

One of my only favorite Romcoms(?)..Very often quoted in my family.. I don't know if you've seen LOST but in the scene when they get out of the taxi, right before they get stuck in the elevator..You might recognize a familiar sound in the background..

Brad Lowry

With that actor that both S&G HATED in Die Hard 2. The guy with the thickest Chicago accent playing a dirty New York Cop in NYPD Blue. But in City of Angels you get to see he is a nice person and a very good actor. That guy's name is Denis Franz.

Brad Lowry

Like Shawshank and Big Lebowski, more beloved after initial "flop" by Hollywood standards.

Josh Sewell

Really enjoyed this reaction and the post-film discussion about optimism/pessimism. I think you guys nailed it that the early era of the internet held so much promise compared to what it ultimately became. From an American perspective, it’s also important to remember this was the last couple of years before 9/11, when the national mood was a lot less angry and cynical. Finally, I was curious if either of you has seen That Thing You Do! - it’s also from this era of Hanks and he directed/wrote it. There’s another funny performance from Steve Zahn too. (Pretty sure that’s how he ended up in You’ve Got Mail.) I think it would make for a great reaction.

REDR58

Cool, this will be a first time view for me! Looking forward to it.

Brad Lowry

I think that Simone would LOVE "Sweet Lorraine" [1987], but oops! that was Maureen Stapleton! Looking it up just now, it also has early roles for Carmello Soprano (Eddie Falco) of the "Sopranos" and Gus Fringe (Giancarlo Espisito) from "Breaking Bad", things that make you go "Hmmm..." Although I can only remember a little bit, I have the strong memory of it reminding me of working as a waiter in the Adirondacks in the summers.

Lola Lirola

Red Eye is super fun!! A great 'bottle movie', and one of those mid-budget but well crafted ones that sadly don't get made anymore. Plus, Cillian Murphy before he got serious!

Brad Lowry

Since Simone knows every frame of this movie, I think I'll pass on an amazing movie with an amazing performance by Jane Adams... the TV interviewer of the boyfriend/writer Frank. Wonder Boys It also stars Tobey Maguire, Frances McDormand, Robert Downey Jr. along with a guy named Michael Douglas. Bob Dylan won an Academy Award for Best Song too!

beefjerkywizard

It's funny how in real life Tom Hanks is obsessed with typewriters

Monica Alarcon

Finally!!!! And it's perfect, I was feeling in a rom com mood

Zach McBride

this movie is one of my guilty pleasures. if i see it i watch it.

JayF

I've been requesting it for a while but she is being stubborn (is my theory). ;)

Monica Alarcon

for younger Hanks check out Splash and Bachelor Party

BangDroid

Simone Simone Simone... Everyone has that one book, or film or series that manages to seep into every fabric of their being, this is totally it for you. I know it's kind of parasocial to say because we don't really know you but I have to believe the Simone you present is as authentic as can be. While I haven't been a member for super long, I can see how much this film is THE film for you. It was so fun to experience and a great reaction from George And hey hey hey not everyone on the internet is horrible to each other, look at 99% of us!

Brad Lowry

OK, George, I've watched you watch so many touching moments and so many painful realities and so many joyful comedies... you ain't foolin' anyone... you just ain't as cynical as you espouse yourself to be. That you are a realist or a skeptic doesn't mean that you are a heartless skeptic. Indeed, one of the last scenes is Meg Ryan bringing down the rolling iron gate that all stores in Manhattan must have to prevent rampant criminals from looting any unprotected store. That was Meg Ryan, the most wonderful and beautiful woman in the world realistically dealing with the crime in NYC. I spent money today to rent this, because I wanted to see the two of you together share this movie. We expect that Simone would be delightful, which she was, but George, you've got a heart too. I thank you both for this wonderful Sunday Morning!

ChickensAreRacist

The wife loves this movie so we watched it first thing this morning. We enjoyed the reaction as usual. However! Simone, on the ‘no one could play that role except Tom Hanks’, I’d say a younger Jack Nicholson could. And without spoiling it, As Good As It Gets is a good example imo.

Jay Davis

So... he's finally seen You've Got Mail. Next, Simone finally sees Hitchhiker's? Is that the story arc?

Brad Lowry

Didn't know that! I do know that one of George's hero's and mine, Stephen Fry, is also obsessed with old typewriters, and I think that Conan O'Brien is too...

Chris Henderson

Can we get Hangover part II next weekend?

Daryl

God, i remember Simone talking about watching this a few years ago. xD loved this movie. I'm not big on rom-coms, but this has always been my favorite

JLee

FINALLYYYY!!!

Manuel Phelouzat

I really love this movie, partly because my mother used to own a little book shop (that was around a corner). It's not that this movie was made for Simone, it's that this movie made part of who Simone is !

David S

Tom Hanks? "Road to Perdition"... please.

Daryl

The last glance before she closes the store always breaks me 😭😭😭😭

Anonymous Groucho

This is apropos of nothing and more of a plea. Can you put Tootsie on a poll? It's a classic from the 80s that no one ever does. And it ultimately IS a romcom (no spoilers about how it gets there).

George, If you were with me, you wouldn't be here in this strip club shaking it for dollar bills!

🖤So Simone's grandparents clearly watched the movies as they taped them since they stopped/restarted the recording to not record commercials, but it would have been funny for your Robocop reaction if Simone was like: So this movie is only new to George, I've seen it. My grandparents had cable and would record movies and send them to us. Yeah, they clearly didn't watch it as they recorded it because this was NOT an appropriate movie for me to see at a young age XD The reason Robocop came to mind for that, of all movies, is because I saw Robocop as a kid. I guess I pushed the memory of the movie in the back of my mind because I barely remembered it when I rewatched it as an adult and was like "I saw THIS movie as a kid?!?!?!" (I never forgot the acid guy tho, that stuck with me...)

JLee

I had two older sisters and I was constantly vetoed on watching Davey Crockett: King of the Wild Frontier and/or Star Wars for the millionth time... and bc of this I now can quote this movie nearly verbatim. As wells Sense and Sensibility and My Best Friend's Wedding and many more. As fortuitous result, I get to count these as some of my favorite movies. The song they sing around the piano will forever be an inescapable earworm song for me, until the day I die. That fucking horn is so forlorn.

BlindPanda

you could clearly see George play solitaire a few times during the reaction lol

Ben

As George mentioned that he associates Tom Hanks with his later roles, I think it would be great to react to his "roots" in 80's comedies/rom coms. With that in mind, some suggestions; Splash The Burbs The Money Pit When you're looking for something lighthearted and fun I hope you keep these in mind.

REDR58

I remember stopping and starting recordings on a VCR years ago. I’m so happy I don’t have to do that anymore.

REDR58

For more Meg Ryan in “older” comedies look for “Innerspace” from 1987. It has Martin Short and Dennis Quaid, and is a very funny sci-fi comedy movie.

Logan Kerlee

Great watchalong! I really enjoyed myself. :)

windyWin

Two romantic-comedies that I watched when I was a young-tween dude were Kate and Leopold, and Blast From The Past. Just thought I'd mention it. I don't know how well they hold up. maybe, I dunno. :)

REDR58

Ah, I well remember eagerly anticipating with bated breath actual emails from certain people back in the late 1990s/very early 2000s. The “Pride and Prejudice” book Tom Hanks was reading had the photos from the 1995 miniseries which was absolutely huge at the time for people who are into Austen. It’s an excellent miniseries to check out.

Skyruff

I only recently found out this movie is a remake of a Jimmy Stewart movie called “Shop Around the Corner”. Thus the shop’s name in this movie. It’s even in the credits and I missed it all the times I have seen this. And you of course caught it first run there George.

Shelley Lloyd

There is another great Nora Ephron movie called Mixed Nuts that I think Simone would enjoy if she hasn't seen it already. Parker Posey and Jon Stewart play an insufferable yuppy couple who keep showing up and it has a stuck elevator as well. It stars Steve Martin, Rita Wilson, Madeline Kahn, Liev Schreiber, Adam Sandler, and Juliette Lewis.

REDR58

Well that was a lot of fun but I honestly excepted he was going to buy the shop, reopen it and work there with her.

Bryce Lamkin

I recommend Son's of Anarchy as a show to watch please, it has 7 seasons

MacGuffinStuff

Okay, shit, I loved it, first time watch, definitely not last, left me with a big smile. I'm not generally into rom-coms but the list of rom-coms I love is growing, it's now this, Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil, Shaun of the Dead (kind of joking, but they are technically rom-com-horrors lol), and three you guys probably haven't seen: Defending Your Life, As Good As It Gets, and Joe Vs. The Volcano, which is kind of like Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan meeting in an alternate dimension.

ExtraBigAssTaco

Defending Your Life is a classic favorite of mine, and I think they would love it. Same with Joe vs the Volcano, both unique and somewhat overlooked.

Paul Peavler

If George hates the Manic Pixie Dream Girl trope, then I have to recommend 500 Days of Summer.

Grandalf

Best RomCom ever is Crazy, Stupid, Love. MUST. WATCH.

Grandalf

I may be a 50 year old, 245 lb. powerlifter, but I love breaking stereotypes, so since Crazy, Stupid, love is off the table, let's go deep into my catalogue of RomComs for Say Anything with John Cusack. I just want to hear George say, "That's what that's from!" when he sees the iconic image towards the end.

Patrick

You should really check out "Always be my maybe". It will put you through the ringer of emotions and nostalgia. Ali Wong is a hell of an actress. Speaking of which, after Ted Lasso is over, you should watch BEEF. It won a bunch of Emmy's and only has 1 season out so far. It would be a different change of pace for you guys to react to a show that is still running.

Teyon Alexander

I worked at Barnes and Noblenon 82nd nd Broadway when this was filmed. Tom and Meg both came into the store in separate occasions. Everyone freaked when Tom came in (and that store gets a lot of celebrity walk ins). We all knew they were filming one thing but didn’t know what until the film came out. The fact that it’s about a giant bookstore taking over from smaller book stores - epic.

Renee MeowMeow Beans

This was fun, though I prefer Shop Around the Corner. 🙂 I'm fairly immune to romantic comedies (being a bitter & cynical Gen Xer 😆) but I get why people love them. There are some that are delightful to me, mostly when they're having fun with tropes. One I think is underrated, is Down With Love (Renée Zellweger & Ewan McGregor, with great support from David Hyde Pierce and Sarah Paulson). It's a pastiche of 60s romantic comedies and so it's played way over the top -- but it's so beautiful to look at and it's hilarious.

darkmoobs

Would love to see you guys watch They Came Together. It’s a satire of trope-y rom coms staring Amy Poehler and Paul Rudd. I think Simone would really appreciate it.

sarCC

Is it weird to say it always sounded dumb to hear "you've got mail" because it's supposed to mean the same as "you have mail" but it's redundant and longer to say?

Brad Lowry

Ditto "Blast from the Past"... Now with Three Academy Award Winners! Sissy Spacek, Christopher Walken, and Brendan Fraser (a Canadian Citizen, BTW). Plus that Kid in the Hall, Dave Foley (also, of course, a Canadian). Of course it's a fun Rom Com that is tangentially about American History.

Brad Lowry

I think I'm not alone in having "Shop Around the Corner" on my list. I couldn't help but think how fitting it is that Simone commented about what a terrible person Joe Fox is in reality, so that only an actor as likable and charismatic as Tom Hanks could play him. I think that she is correct, of actors alive. Another actor that is as likeable and charismatic as Tom Hanks in his day was Jimmy Stewart. Indeed, as Tom Hanks was on his way to his current status as "National Treasure" there were many that compared the two for those qualities. Perhaps Noah Ephron had that in mind.

Brad Lowry

Another Rom-Com recommendation... Since everyone loves Alan Rickman, deservedly so. And since both Simone and George loved him in both "Die Hard" and "Galaxy Quest", deservedly so. I humbly recommend "Truly, Madly, Deeply" which has been described as a British 'Ghost'.

Brad Lowry

Thanks. I'm looking for "Down With Love" if they don't get to it! I love Rene Zellweger and Sarah Paulson. I don't think that Rene Zellweger is given enough credit as an actress. I cannot think of any other actress that could have pulled off "Nurse Betty" and keep it believable!

Michael Kemmet

Another person here requesting The Shop Around the Corner(1940). I like You've Got Mail, but I love Shop so much more. And I'll also echo those that recommend Joe Versus the Volcano(1990). It's extremely quirky, but it's an experience.

Lola Lirola

You know what, I kept thinking about it, and the list of big-time romcoms I made was really too white and straight, and that is a mistake on my part. So I'm going to add a round of non-white romcoms, and a round of queer ones, because the genre is mostly white-het, but we don't have to be. Here we go! Always Be My Maybe - Ali Wong takes all your favorite romcom tropes and gives them her own Asian-American specificity. Plus a Keanu cameo where he clearly relishes making fun of himself! Rye Lane - Directly influenced by When Harry Met Sally, but updated to the modern era; it doesn't remake or pay homage so much as ask 'how would a meet cute actually work today?' It shows a London full of life, art and dreams, and the lead couple is cute as hell. Like Water For Chocolate - A wonderful example of Mexican Magical Realism, where life and emotions are heightened to the point of impacting reality (sort of like a Latin Wuxia?). Here, a woman is forbidden to marry the love of her life, but finds that all her longing, lust and sadness transfer to the food she cooks for others. Bonus mouthwatering food porn for George! The Big Sick - The real story of how Kumail Nanjiani and his wife Emily first met, and how she got life-threateningly sick, sounds like a drama, but it's a sweet and warm story of commitment and an interestingly asymmetrical getting to know each other. Just Wright - Queen Latifah stars in this reliably charming story of tomboy physical therapist meets all-star basketball player when he gets injured and she has to bring him back to life in every possible way. It has all the expected tropes, but it's so comforting and cute, you won't want them any other way. Monsoon Wedding - A huge international hit with star-crossed lovers, big family drama and stormy revelations, Bollywood style. Love and Basketball - A great peek into the decades of loves and ambitions of two professional basketball players. Gina Prince-Bythewood said her goal was "to do a black When Harry Met Sally", and she made a true classic of the genre. BONUS: My Big Fat Greek Wedding - I mean, Greek people are white, but they weren't always considered such, and this one is full of culture clash when shy waspy Ian meets a woman… and her whole boisterous, loud, dramatic and ample Mediterranean family.

Lola Lirola

And here's the queer round! The Birdcage - Robin Williams stars in this camp queer superfun masterpiece, as one half of the sweetest couple goals ever. But his world gets turned upside down when his son gets engaged to the daughter of a conservative Senator… The Half of It - The classic tale of Cyrano de Bergerac has had a million remakes, but this queer, Asian one is particularly sweet: Chinese-American girl Ellie gets hired by himbo football player Paul to seduce the girl of his dreams, but she ends up falling for her instead as she keeps writing her letters. The Wedding Banquet - Before Ang Lee became the filmmaker of repressed British emotions, he did this sweet, queer Chinese-American comedy: A gay Taiwanese immigrant gets engaged to a Chinese-American woman to placate his parents and get a green card, but his plan backfires when his parents arrive to help plan the wedding. Fire Island - Gay Jane Austen! That really should be enough recommendation, but this fun, raunchy, gay, screwball version of Pride and Prejudice really works much better than anyone thought it could. But I'm a Cheerleader - A camp classic. Natasha Lyonne and Clea DuVall are absolute queer icons who get sent to a gay conversion camp run by totally straight Christian counselor RuPaul. But it doesn't seem to be working as intended, because all the attendees are delighted to be sharing rooms together... Go Fish - The 90s lesbian scene gets a group portrait in this indie series of vignettes exploring the relationships and struggles of Max, Ely and their friends as they fall in and out of love. Boy Meets Girl - An explicit but incredibly sweet and sensitive trans love story. In small town Kentucky, openly trans girl Ricki wants to find her place. Most people are accepting, but she has big dreams for her future and can't decide if she is falling in love with cute best friend Robert or newly arrived Francesca. BONUS: My Best Friend's Wedding - This one only has a queer supporting character, that's why it's a bonus. But Julia Roberts was at the peak of her romcom prowess in this antihero story of a woman trying to stop his best friend from marrying Cameron Diaz. It's a really original twist on the 'he had been there all along' trope!

Lola Lirola

Omg, Splash! Yes!! I always wanted to turn scaly after a long bath, and I now see it sounds awful, but the mermaid transformation felt magical to me!

Stephanie Bedworth

Two of my favorite RomComs both star Simon Pegg. Run, Fatboy, Run, and Man Up.

Philipp Roensch

I've got no romcoms to recommend, but if you like comedy in a book shop, Black Books is the goat series. Could works a bumper between serious shows^^. Surprisingly, nice movie, well done and a thicc layer of romance to not get too complicated. "I've done cybersex and always got a busy tone." could also be a valid Simone intro to the show :D

simon brouillard

That was great. Nora Ephron is awesome, I’m assuming Simone saw those but when Harry met Sally and Sleepless in Seattle are great, the first one she wrote. All the president’s men and before The post would be awesome, about watergate and the first is about the journalists who discovered watergate, one of them being Carl Bernstein who was involved at the time with..,,, Nora Ephron

Jesse Coombs

That was lovely. I think we all get a warm feeling when a movie we share and love is enjoyed by you guys, and it's really nice to see Simone get the same feeling. It was also really fun to see George share "Crouching Tiger" in a similar way.

Jesse Coombs

Also, I really hope you watch the best Tom Hanks/Meg Ryan movie: Joe Vs. The Volcano. It's a bizarre, fun movie. I was about to describe it, but it's better if you go in blind.

Jesse Coombs

Innerspace is wonderful. Directed by Joe Dante who did "The 'Burbs" and "Gremlins".

Jesse Coombs

I really need to go to bed, but before I do, one of my favorite romantic comedies that's actually recent is the movie "The Worst Person in the World". It's a Norwegian movie about a young woman who discovers love but also who she really is. It's heartbreaking, funny, and very poignant.

kbobravo

They Came Together is legitimately one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. David Wain brings out my perfect kind of humor.

Angela D. Mitchell

This was one of the reasons I signed up for Patreon, darn it. Because as I mentioned on YT -- finally -- someone who loves this movie as much as I do! Thank you Simone for this wonderful reaction (it was so much fun to see your favorite moments, and how sweet George was about them). I love that New York feels like a fairy tale (the Upper West Side setting also helps with that). The soundtrack is perfect. The bookstore setting is so lovely. George, I see how Joe's subterfuge in the final third could be seen as cruel, but for me I'm okay with his deception because he did go to meet her in person, and she was (understandably) cruel to him and unable to see past his "evil corporate" persona. So he stepped back... then took a breath, broke up with his GF, and went back and openly asked for her friendship. He used that opportunity to try to show her his other side, but I do think it was clear that he was always going to tell her who he was, which makes it okay to me. So I'm with Simone on this -- I think he had to do that simply for her to see him as a person. She couldn't see him as a person before he showed up when she was sick. I also love how many bit actors here who went on to find major success, like Sara Ramirez (the cashier clerk), Michael Badalucco (the elevator guy), Reiko Aylesworth (Thanksgiving guest), Chris Messina (the Fox Books sales guy), Jane Adams (the talk show lady), etc. Everyone loves "Sleepless" but I think this one is so much better and more magical (not to mention less toxic and creepy). I've loved it ever since I saw it in the theatre. Meanwhile, for other romcom suggestions, mine would include: The Big Sick Bridget Jones's Diary Crazy Rich Asians Doc Hollywood Enchanted In Her Shoes And I agree with everyone on the special wonderfulness of JOE VS. THE VOLCANO! Hanks, Ryan, and a really sweet, funny, uplifting story from John Patrick Shanley.

Jenny MacRunnel

Its completely legal to videotape a movie on your TV. (What Simone's grandparents did) This started happening in the 80s, and it actually went to the Supreme Court, which deemed as long as you weren't reselling it, it was legal. We all did this, we all made our own videotapes.

Jenny MacRunnel

Your conversation at the end--I also agree with Simone, that if he had revealed himself in the coffee shop, they never would have gotten together. Because Joe was PISSED after that confrontation and hated her, called her a witch, etc., and seemed to want to ignore her. But after she sent him that message and he got the inner workings of her mind, his anger faded and he felt bad about it, you could see that on his face. I don't think he ever would have made an effort with her unless she sent him that message, and she wouldn't have sent it if she knew who he was.

Jonathan Eaton

Like Simone, I too had a special first viewing of this and have seen it many many times since. I was a single dad with 4 kids and the power went out during a big storm. My laptop was fully charged and I had just bought this. We all huddled around the screen and watched it twice before the power came back on. Good times.
