(Commentary & Rewatch) Lord of The Rings: The Fellowship of The Ring - Patreon Version

Comments

Marko T.

Unpopular opinion: Theatrical version of Fellowship is better. Its a perfect movie.

Nemo

Rewatch of LOTR is always a good idea.

Śéáń

This is uncanny, I was just thinking of rewatching fellowship this weekend. I've been meaning to trial my 4k copy. I guess it's set now.

GnolRevilo

You guys have just made my day. Can't wait to rewatch with you!

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Awesome! This is my favourite movie (well all three) of all time and happy you both are doing this for the channel, if nothing else for the hell of it. Had the same thought that I could recite every line from every scene to an obnoxious degree when I watch these films. Easily one of the greatest theatre experiences of my moviegoing life. Curious how Patrons rank these films: personally I rank them Fellowship, Return and Two Towers

Florian Geyer

Are you kidding? OMG I love you so much <3

Marko T.

Movie suggestion: The Lord of the Rings (1978). Animated movie directed by Ralph Bakshi.

GBmain

Never watched it, always been on my list. This is kinda perfect.

Haye Zeus

Wait, you guys already saw this? I would have never guessed since ya’ll rarely mention lotr.

Thexx

I've been wishing for this for so long. I'm almost thinking about calling into work just to watch this. I can tell you right now that I will be re-watching this re-watch a few times over. But I might wait, fingers crossed (and I don't know how you couldn't, the universe would implode), until all 3 are released.

Ph4ZeD

You crazy mofos actually did it, woot

Monica Alarcon

Well there go my afternoon plans out the window. Lol.

JayF

Love that you did this but dagummit now I have to dig through a bunch of moving boxes to find my DVDs. ;)

JoshG

The first line that comes to mind for me is “My Precious” because I first saw lord of the rings when I was like 4 and I remembered hating it cause Golem scared the crap out of me.

JayF

My favorite line is from The Hobbit (book not movie as the movie butchered the wording) “Farewell, good thief,” [Thorin] said. “I go now to the halls of waiting to sit beside my fathers, until the world is renewed. Since I leave now all gold and silver, and go where it is of little worth, I wish to part in friendship from you, and I would take back my words and deeds at the Gate.” Bilbo knelt on one knee filled with sorrow. “Farewell, King under the Mountain!” he said. “This is a bitter adventure, if it must end so; and not a mountain of gold can amend it. Yet, I am glad that I have shared in your perils – that has been more than any Baggins deserves.” “No!” said Thorin. “There is more in you of good than you know, child of the kindly West. Some courage and some wisdom, blended in measure. If more of us valued food and cheer and song above hoarded gold, it would be a merrier world. But sad or merry, I must leave it now. Farewell!”

Jon Johns

What's the first line that comes to mind when thinking of LOTR? "Did you know, in this scene, he really broke his toe?!" 🤣

Jon Johns

I wonder where the trope of "not even saying his name" started? Made famous on Harry Potter, but even here, when Frodo says "Sauron" the ring responds to it? What does this trope represent?

Richard

From Simone's facial expressions, you wouldn't think she's seen it multiple times. George, I had the same question about that Hobbit.

Astraeos

Never a bad time to rewatch LOTR. Is this the Extended Editions? Also, have you guys seen the behind the scenes and making of footage on the Extended Editions? I'd honestly say some of that content is almost worth a reaction on the channel, particularly the videos that involve the cast and more of the specific behind the scenes footage involving them. I rewatch all of that behind the scenes/making of content almost every year, just like the movies. Its sooo good, and so interesting, and so heartwarming to see how close the cast and crew became during the production. I mean honestly, it seems like the LOTR production was one of the most unique things that ever happened in the history of film production, and its so just interesting and awesome to watch it unfold. So eternally grateful for both the cast and the crew for taking such comprehensive footage and looks behind the scenes while the movies were being made.

Jon Johns

Extended editions, or not, this trilogy could have been milked for 3 troligies of 9 films, easily. So happy that didn't happen.

Jon Johns

George, the other element of these special effects I appreciate is the 'proper' use of 'hand held' and 'shaky can't during the fight scenes...

Nathan Jasper, the Artist Formerly Known as Primary

So George/Simone, have you read any more of JRR and Christopher Tolkien's works? Like the Book of Lost Tales, Tolkien Miscellany, Silmarillion? There's a book called The Atlas of Middle Earth that goes into the First and Second Ages as well as the third, the layout of the world and how it evolved over thousands of years... It's fascinating to think how much actual work went into making this world. I hope you keep going with the rewatch, LOTR and Hobbit both.

Jon Johns

Simone, have you played on the Minecraft middle earth server?

MacGuffinStuff

I have to admit, the scene where Elrond takes Isildur with the ring into Mount Doom, I was thinking, "Dude just kill him and throw it in!" Instead he's like, "Isildur! Ah, darn it..." But then yeah, we wouldn't have this awesomeness.

W T

After, you should do Bad Taste or/and Dead Alive to highlight Peter Jackson's penchant for gross but funny things

djKENTO

Every now and then the Alamo Drafthouse theater chain here in the US will do Lord of the Rings feasts. They show all the films in their extended form and they have a 12 course meal that goes with them. They haven’t had any updated videos about it… but here’s the last time they advertised it heavily at their now closed theater The Ritz in Austin Texas https://youtu.be/U-SenvFjWmE?si=opbQXNIPLtLSzL_b

Logan Kerlee

I'm so damn happy that you both reacted to this on here for us! :D THANK YOU!!

Logan Kerlee

I wrote a book of a comment but it's too long to fit as a comment so I'll just say that I'm extremely grateful for this. Thank you George and Simone. :) You both really saved the day, today! This was an excellent thing to wake up to. :D

Mastervodo

I remember watching the Rankin-Bass Hobbit cartoon, sitting on a basketball court in 2nd grade as a little young'n. The spiders scared the crap out of us. I had read the hobbit book before 5th grade, and in 6th grade, I read the rest of the Lord of the Rings, which is like, college-reading level. By 7th grade, I was doing my older sisters' Junior-year English Lit homework that pertained to the LOTR books. Love this movie. Love this series. Love anything Tolkien. I wish I had friends who could marathon these extended edition movies with me every year.

Spacedone

Excellent, now I've got an excuse to rewatch these masterpieces for the 700th time.

Philipp Roensch

Yay! I've just had a rewatch in the cinema last week, but there always room for another! Have you ever seen the 4K HDR remaster? It was good in the cinema, but I don't have that tech at home yet^^.

JLee

This was a nice surprise on a dreary Friday off! Had a nice coffee, practiced the lute a bit, and started making some chicken-veggie soup... all while before we made it to Khazad-dûm. Fellowship is my favorite to just pop on and watch or have on in the background, but I love the Ents and the Rohirrim too much to choose an overall fav.

Odd Thomas

The theatrical cuts have been dead to me for 20 years. Extended all the way. Why swim in a pond when you can swim in a lake?

Odd Thomas

Have you seen Ridley Scott's Legend? It's a fantasy film that was obviously inspired by LOTR. It's not perfect but it is gorgeous and I think you'd enjoy it for this reason. Tim Curry. Tom Cruise.

Jay Davis

I was fortunate enough to see this in theaters when it came out. With my mother. Who used to read me the books when I was a young child.

DM DC

I love this movie. This was fun. I hadn't seen it in a while. When this came out December 19 2001, I saw this 10 times at the theatre (2nd one I also saw 10 times, 3rd one I only got to see 5 times at the theatre, but still 25 times for all 3 films at the theatre. My favorite line from the film is from the scene when they are trecking up the mountain and Frodo slips, falls, then rolls down a bit and Boromir picks up the ring looking at it. "Tis such a strange fate that we should suffer so much fear and doubt over so small a thing. Such a little thing." That is to this day, my favorite scene, and my favorite line of the whole series. These movies are how I envision my world and my games when I run DnD/Pathfinder. The Scorpion King released in April of 2002, Fellowship released December 2001. Armageddon released in 1998. The scene in which Frodo is moving around the column to hide from the cave troll: does anyone else think that there were two good opportunities there to just stab that troll in the face? Every time I see it I can't help but think of that. As to the question which (I guess it was fantasy movie world?) would you want to be in? Maybe the more appropriate way to phrase it would be if you could be an adventurer in a fantasy movie, which fantasy movie world would you want to be in? Middle Earth (from the films) would definitely be mine if I were an adventurer, especially a ranger.

gobmob2000

Love this reaction, two other films of Peter Jackson that are worth a watch is King Kon 2005, staring Jack Black and The Adventures of TinTin 2011, directed by Steven Spielberg and produced by Peter Jackson (Although unofficially he helped Spielberg direct the film)

Michael

“Hangs Friendout” is my porn name.

jeendus

are they doing all 3 films? :)

FischerMax98

Maybe Willow as an introduction to fantasy? Fun to re-watch this with you guys.

ExtraBigAssTaco

It's pretty hard to pick a single line... A couple of my favorites are "So do all who live to see such times." and "ALL SHALL LOVE ME AND DESPAIR!!!"

Lola Lirola

This is amazing!!!! And it had everything I want on a rewatch: some jokes, some memories, comparing it to other movies you've seen, even mouthing lines! Absolute bliss. There's a podcast I'm subscribed to that has done a special Christmas rewatch of Love Actually vs The Holiday *every single year* for literally the past decade, and still find things to talk about, so I wouldn't even object to this being a yearly rewatch on your channel! I would love to know how the movie changes for you each time you watched it: things you never noticed before, things that you now care about more, or that you now don't care for (is there any? can there be?), that kind of stuff. Since we all know it's not a first watch, we can all enjoy the deep-dive! It's interesting, as I was watching you both get so incredibly transported, I had the thought that this is the millennial Star Wars. Because these movies are absolutely impeccable; true unparalleled masterpieces, but I still feel that the OG Star Wars trilogy is more "mine", if it makes sense? Maybe it's the age when I watched each? But there's a whole generation for whom LotR is the singular experience that made them realize that movies could be *that* good, and these definitely stand the test of time. Really the achievement of a lifetime. And where these movies are the comfort watch for so many, the making of extras are *my* comfort watch, almost more than the movies! I often put them on just for inspiration. Hours upon hours of people who know what they are doing, given the time and money to take their craftsmanship to the greatest level... absolutely wonderful to see. And so little of the trite and generic "well, it was a pleasure to work here..." of other making-ofs, these specials are chock full of nerdery, details, nitpicks, careful consideration of choices... aaaahhh, so good.

Monica Alarcon

Have you seen Willow? Cause if not you need to watch it...

Shonnicus

So there was a time when I had Special Edition; Extended DVD and I watched them more with Director, Writers and Actors then the actual movie. So I will enjoy the commentary and listen to what you love and hopefully more.

Skyruff

Unlike "dubstep"... "Simon's Peg" will never die!!!

Cubonemaker

I commented on the wrong one but doesn’t matter. I cannot wait to watch this with you guys when I have the time! Time to nerd tf out.

Alan Kobb

What is it about, she asks? Easy. It's about 4 hours...

Com1xguy

Holy sheet! It actually happened! Time to light up the pipeweed and re-watch along!

Patrick

I appreciate the "Re-Watch" warning, as if George doesn't make some obscure comparison to LOTR in almost every video hahaha :-p

Monica Alarcon

"In 2002 a fake sequel to Harry Potter appeared in China with the title "Harry Potter and Bao Zuolong." The book consists of the text of JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit with names changed to those of Harry Potter characters." I don't know if this counts as a chinese translation of the Hobbit but it's something that exists...

sol stapleton

I would agree with goarge with the 3 2 1 being the order.

Skyruff

To paraphrase the movie “the truth about cats and dogs” … George, it’s great to “love” your movie but not to “loooove” your movie. Take care of that off screne dude. Nuff said.

Shibby

I think that if Elrond took the ring from Isildur by force then he would probably become corrupted by it, and it wouldn't be destroyed either way.

Poddington

Ah just so great to watch this again. I also watch these almost annually. Last year I did a marathon with my friend to watch The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings. I was fortunate to watch these films as they premiered and I hadn't read the books before The Fellowship. I did try, but found them hard to read. After The Fellowship though I watched The Two Towers before the second film and then Return of the King before the 3rd. It's incredible how these films got made and how important they are not just for cinema and viewers, but the actors and production. I think my favourite is Return of King, because like George says it's 4 hours of payoffs, but it always feels bad having to choose. My favourite moment is when Rohan turns up Minas Tirith or "My friends,, you bow to no one"

John

Thank you for this, I hope that you also re-watch the Two Towers and Return of the King. I will suggest Kingdom of Heaven (Director's Cut) as a movie or poll. It stars Orlando Bloom and the act who plays Celebron.

Jared Winn

First line I think of is “you shall not pass”, of course. “Theoden, King, stands alone” “Not alone…” is my all time favorite movie moment/theatre experience and it was only, nearly, topped by Endgame. Changed the movie-going life a little 11 year old and I’ll never forget it.

REDR58

The only visual effects that don’t really hold up for me are the dry-for-wet used for Sam under water at the end. Even today dry-for-wet never looks good. Hair billowing in wind just looks too different from flowing water passing over it. And a lot of the wigs on background hobbits look pretty bad, but that’s just nitpicking.

REDR58

I watched all the commentaries on all the discs and every minute of the other supplements. Not sure when I’ll ever do it again, but it was well worth it.

REDR58

It’s worth watching just for Tim Curry alone! He is amazing as the Lord of Darkness.

Buhr

I think that Fellowship is my favorite overall, but my favorite moment is in Return of the King. When Aragorn turns to the remaining party at the Black Gate, says "For Frodo" and charges ahead. Especially when the next two to charge are Pipping and Merry.

Jack Urmson

My favorite of the three is The Two Towers. I can’t even tell you why. It’s the one I’ve seen the most. Favorite line: “Don’t tell the elf.” 😁 I worked for a theater company when Fellowship was released, and got to screen it before release to the public. The original color & visuals on the 35mm prints and digital sound mix on those were stellar. Fellowship has one of the best opening 8 minutes of exposition I’ve ever seen in a movie. Such a pleasure to watch this again and share in the love of these works of art. 🥲😊❤️ Keep it going! Let’s watch the other two!

Foodassassin4life

I don't know if someone has said this yet but the actor that plays Celeborn is the main villain in The Equalizer

DCray

My vote for an actor to play Tom Bombadil would be Gary Oldman.

REDR58

Am I the only one who thinks that when Viggo Mortensen says “Rivendale Master Gamgee” he sounds just like Robin Williams with an accent? 😄

Foodassassin4life

Hard as I tried to resist I couldn't wait to watch the other two! It's been years since I last watched them and I've never watched the extended editions

Bobby Belanger

Thank you both so much, you literally made my day. Watching the same level of love I feel for this franchise with both of you was fantastic. Thank you, and hope you do the next two. :-)

Jesus F Christ

While Simone & George were thinking of D&D scenarios throughout the movie, I was remembering the hundreds of hours I spent playing LOTRO (The Lord of the Rings Online MMORPG). S&G, did either of you ever play that game? Did anyone else? I remember the Moria expansion being pretty epic. I finally stopped playing about the time they added Rohan and mount combat. Looking at a current game map, it's amazing how much of the Middle Earth map they've actually built into playable areas with quests and storylines. http://lotromap.net/terrainmap/google.html

Lola Lirola

I agree, and I say this as someone who tried to read the books and got bored, and who prefers sci-fi to fantasy every time, but I watched the theatrical cut of this in the theater (duh) when it came out, and I was like 'oh, that was nice' but when I saw the extended version I enjoyed it much much more!! The extended versions made me fall in love with this trilogy, so I would skip the theatricals even for newbies!

Odd Thomas

We also need Peter Jackson's The Frighteners. One of my fave 90s movies.

Ketzalborne

i never need an excuse to watch lotr again

Logan Kerlee

Movie world.. that's difficult! If I could include books as well though - it'd be Terry Goodkind's world from The Sword of Truth series. Either that or World of Darkness.

Logan Kerlee

Ohhhh!! I love Willow so much! That right there was my introduction to Fantasy. I remember watching that at a very young age. Bavmorda creeped me out big time. :) Love when other people know.recommend that movie!

Nemo

Commentaries are underrated. Watched a lot of blind waves commentaries of the classics, including these. No need to worry about talking over scenes and missing stuff either. Looking forward to the other two. :)

JamesJ

The quote I usually think of when I think of LotR is "My friends.... you bow to no one." Favorite is Return, but followed very closely by Fellowship.

Odd Thomas

George I think your dad will totally get LOTR. At its core it's a universal story of good versus evil.

Dioskur

btw you two did see the last unicorn, didnt you?

REDR58

The CG in these movies still looks very good compared to now and yes in some ways better, but the best CG in the trilogy is, I feel, best seen at night and inside caves. It’s not a slight against the quality of the work, there is just a certain something hard to describe about the lighting on the characters. It just looks better in moonlight (as with Gollum especially in TTT) and by firelight. Full daylight, it doesn’t look quite as good. But it does not look bad by any means.

Lola Lirola

...And coming in with a set of recommendations for this sort of medievalist English fantasy movies! I was surprised by the absence of most of these on the channel, considering how much they love the genre and vibe, but maybe it's because they've already watched them all? In any case, let's try: Excalibur - Considered the ultimate Arthurian legend film, this takes the medieval myth and wraps it in 70s decadence, as it rejects the usual formal and reverential versions to revel in all the sex, sweat, fights, family drama, cuckolding and absolute weirdness that everyone else glosses over. Also watch out for Patrick Stewart and a young Helen Mirren as Morgan LeFey! Labyrinth - Once upon a time, David Bowie became the Goblin King, and a thousand sexual awakenings of all possible genders and orientations were born. Kidding aside, this is a fantastic coming of age story of a girl who has to get through a labyrinth on time to save her brother. Jim Henson's muppets make it all magical too! Ladyhawke - The 80s gave us this incredibly odd version of medieval fantasy legend and modern synth music, that shouldn't really work but does. It helps that it stars Michelle Pfeiffer and Rutger Hauer (from Blade Runner) at the absolute peak of both their hotnesses. A couple has been cursed to never be together because she turns into a hawk during daylight, while he turns into a wolf at night. Can they break the spell? Legend - Tom Cruise prances around the forest covered in glitter in one of his weirdest and queerest roles (except for Top Gun, of course) as a sort of pixie in love with a human who accidentally kills a unicorn. Tim Curry also stars as a fabulously horny (in every way possible) lord of darkness. The movie was sadly a flop, but exists as a time capsule of an alternate path that Cruise's career could have taken, and it's fun to think about that. Neverending Story - I'll admit, as a massive fan of the book, the movie was a terrible disappointment for me as a kid, but having rewatched it recently, it has so much magic and charm. Incredible life lessons about dealing with sadness and loss, the power of imagination, and the absolute importance of storytelling and books. And the title song is a banger! Dark Crystal - Jim Henson again, because he really owned 80s fantasy, and my whole generation was raised by his incredible puppetry. In this one, the puppets take center stage, and the whole movie is made of them, they're not side characters anymore. A couple of elf-like creatures has to save the crystal that is their life-source from the clutches of evil before a prophecy is fulfilled… Green Knight - A recent one, that takes a 14th Century minor medieval poem from the Arthurian cycle and turns it into a meditative lonely quest (and I mean this in the best way) about finding yourself, becoming a man, and discovering how the world works. It mixes paganism, medieval christianism and folk myths into gorgeous and colorful imagery. * Princess Bride would obviously have a place of honour here, but they've already reacted to it! * Also, I debated putting the Chronicles of Narnia here, since Tolkien was a lifelong friend of C.S. Lewis, the author of the books, but the movies sort of petered out in quality…

REDR58

I say dive right in with your dad with these movies. I watched some of the Asian market movies your guys have put on here with no background and it’s not at all difficult to follow along.

Samuel Bruce

3,1,2, but I still love them all equally. Best line is King Theodons speech before The Charge of the Rorhirram. I almost thought a younger Jon Lithgow would be a great Tom Bombadil

Grandalf

I really have to thank you guys for this. It's always a great time for a re-living of The Lord of the Rings. After all, my grandpa name is Grandalf. Yes my two hobbits (granddaughters, age 7 & 4) have always known me as Grandalf. I'm just now realizing that they're almost old enough to learn the power of their imaginations and be introduced to the world of Middle Earth!

Korpse

Lines that pop into my head are "my prescious" and "you shall not pass" in that order lol

Korpse

For a good switch in character for Ian macellan is a film called Apt. Pupil. He is absolutely terrifying and menacing 🙌🤌💯💚

MD Simmons

The audacity of them trying to reinvent the game.

FranciscoGios

I would rank them Return of the King after Fellowship of the Ring last but not least Two Towers. Also I’m glad you guys rewatched this, and after time went by you guys took your time to know more of certain characters specially Boromir, I remembered watching this when you guys first watched it and I was screaming on top of my lungs ‘BoroMiR iS a GOod GUy!!’. Also -You Shall Not pass- is my favorite line when I think of Fellowship of the Ring.

Nemo

There are many lines that pop up in my head at random points in daily life from these movies, hard to pick one. 1. “There never was much hope. Just a fools hope.” 2. “My friends, You bow to no one.” 3. “Night changes many thoughts.” 4. “Fool of a took!” 5. “ So do all who live to see such times. But that is not for them to decide. All we have to decide is what to do with the time that is given to us.”

Shibby

Thank you so much for reacting to these, it's always a good day to watch The Lord of the Rings again, and I loved hearing your thoughts about them.

Elvenwitch

For the most part, I don't watch a rewatch reaction. But your love for these films made it a requirement. Thank you for the excellent commentary track. As for who could play Tom Bombadil I cannot think of anyone but Biran Blessed, albeit a 30 year younger Brian. My favorite line comes from RotK so it may be my favorite.

Korpse

I wonder how long we will have to wait for towers now lol

Eric Brown

I like Fellowship the most. It has all the textures of the other movies - epic battles, great lines, memorable performances but it does the heaviest lifting of the franchise. It gives every character a reason for fighting, for continuing onward when the odds are stacked against them. It does that while remaining light, energetic, and charismatic as all hell

Cubonemaker

I can't even begin to tell y'all how much fun I had watching this with you guys. It's been so long since I've watched these with a fellow LOTR nerd. Yes, Simone I think you should give Rings of Power another chance. It's worth it IMO. George...maybe get stoned first? I will always say that what happened to Boromir, would have happened to every other member of the fellowship, except maybe Aragorn and Sam. My favorite changes every once in a while. Two Towers was my favorite at first. Then in my 20s I liked ROTK the most, and now Fellowship is my favorite (because of the Gandalf quote that's voiced over Frodo - tattooed on my chest).

My name is Jeff

To this day, this movie is biggiest dissapoinment i have ever had. Its a great movie, but i was a Tolkien Stan as Kid and i was Part of Tolkien fan club. They did hobbits so dirty and they changed so many things from Brooks. I did read The book 7 Times before this movie and i knew bits and part from it. Its all about My expectations that made me dissapointed, nothing wrong at movie.

Lola Lirola

It's Slow Sam Day (aka Valentine's Day), and I just want to bring everyone into the joy that everybody on Spanish twitter has today! Explaining jokes never works, and I inevitably have to for those who don't speak Spanish, but I don't care, because it's adorable: Today, everyone is sharing posts with a screencap of the moment Sam says 'this is as far as I've ever travelled' in the Shire, wit the caption Sam va lentin (Sam is lagging behind / Sam walks slowly) because it sounds similar to 'San Valentin' (Saint Valentine). It's been happening for 10 years (!!) and it's become such a huge tradition that it reached Sean Austin, who is really amused to be the hero of Valentine's Day in my country, and people share countless variations on the theme, people consider it a yearly tradition and make countdowns and preparations... It's joyous and hilarious. So happy Sam va lentin Day everybody! https://twitter.com/SeanAstin/status/1360789753214377985

China Andronicus

My dad gave me the books when I was 10 and he introduced them to me with his vintage Hildebrandt calendars. I will never forget him describing Boromir as a good man who makes a few mistakes. It’s always so frustrating when people think he’s bad.

Eric Tanaka

I do want to say, in this flood of comments, that I love you both for doing this. It's a gamble when it comes to money because it's a rewatch and it's a looot of work for the edited versions. Had such a a great time watching, can't wait to get to the next one soon. You both have become my favorite patreon subbed reactors, just so you know ❤️

Justin Leone

Hmmm, aside from Brian Blessed?... Maybe Nick Offerman

Pam Nail

Had to wait until I had some time for this so probably no one will see this but who cares. I think Fellowship is the best, but Return is my favorite. And I love all three, but Two Towers is so fragmented -- well done, but still fragmented -- with all our faves so far apart for the entire movie. But Return is my favorite for similar reasons as George -- it's where all the payoff is, and there's so much emotion because we've been with these characters so long. On a much more minor note, Armageddon did come out before these movies -- it was 1998.

Joe

Oh man, rest in piece Ian Holm. His death devastated me. I grew up with him; first in The Borrowers, then Lord of the Rings, then Alien. What a wonderful actor.

Spacecat44

There's a part of me that feels like George is the Frodo and Simone is the Sam of Cinebinge. But there's another part of me that's pretty sure George is Merry and Simone is Pippin.

Manuel Phelouzat

+1 with George, read the discworld, all of it !

Manuel Phelouzat

Between Lothlorien and Rivendell, I'll choos Lothlorien evryday.

Amelie W

My favorite line of the whole trilogy is "What must I do?" Just four small, common words, and I bet you immediately recognize who says it and why. I'd like to live in Rivendell with the elves who welcome non-elves and visitors from all over the world. Feels like Elrond would get my books published and read them with curiosity while Galadriel would keep me under guard to make sure I write about elves she knows, and don't wander around in the woods being a gross noisy mortal. Like she steps up when the world is in danger and all but Lothlorien seems so harshly isolationist in general.

Raven Dark

Oh my gosh, guys. This makes me so happy. I loved every second of this reaction. Before I address your commentary, though, there's something I've been wanting to say for a while. I watch your reactions, I see how much you love certain... things... and every so often, the urge to blurt this out grows stronger. I've held off until now, but having seen this reaction, I can't keep it in anymore. Simone, George, you guys have got to react to STRANGER THINGS. There is so much I want to say about that show to try and sell you on it, but I don't want to spoil, so I will just say this: I held off because parts of ST relies on pop culture references, and, while it works well on its own, you'll appreciate the show more if you get them. I wanted to make sure you had enough of the right shows and movies in your lexicon first before I recommended it. You're ready. *Rafiki voice* It is time. There may be a small handful of references that you'll miss, but I think those will be few and far between, and your viewers will help you when that happens. The show does have scary elements, but, Simone, I think it'll be just the right amount of scary without being too scary. George, you don't seem to be as easily freaked by scary stuff as Simone, so I think you'll do just fine. The final season is coming soon, so now is the perfect time to start it. My ranking for this trilogy is the same as George's--3,2,1, and for much the same reason. RotK is 4 hours of payoffs. My favorite line is the same as the one that stands out most when I think of LotR, and it's also the same as George's favorite quote. "I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you." I think everyone should have a Sam, but I also agree with George--everyone should also be *like* Sam. A little personal thing here. I had a Sam once. His name was James, and he was the only person in my life that loved LotR as much as me. The two people who are closest to me now don't like these movies. One, hubby, just isn't into it, and the other, my current best friend, hates this kind of fantasy (elves, dwarves, heavy world-building) with a passion (yes, it makes me sad). James passed away a while back, and I still can't watch these movies without thinking of him and welling up. Incidentally, James and I were talking about these films, and, a few days before he passed, as he was leaving my house he looked at me and I kid you not, he said, "Raven, I'm glad you're with me." (but he used my real name). That's why when you said that to Simone, George, I cried a little. Thank you both for rewatching this. I'm about to dive into the other two, but I haven't enjoyed this movie so much in a long time. Watching it with you, it felt almost like James was with me again.

My fave line... "Have you been at the Gaffer's old brew ?" - "No... well yes, but that's hardly the point !" This is my fave film. The third would be if it had done the sacking of The Shire and laid off a tad on the over-emotional ending. I would cast Tom Hardy as Tom Bombadil. I would live in Lothlórien as it is closer to Galadriel. It is autumn in Rivendell because the city is in its twilight with the elves abandoning the city to take the boats to Valinor.
