YESSSSSS I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO THIS ONE!!!

Marko T.

Yes! This is my favorite Batman movie after The Dark Knight. I hope you watch Batman Forever too.

djKENTO

Christmas in February! This movie was so dark that the over correction killed the franchise and nearly all comic book movies.

JakeyShakeyBakeyBoy

Ay nice! Glad to see this one followed up. Pfeiffer is still the ultimate Catwoman and Tim Burton’s off-the-wall style is at his best here. The soundtrack for this movie is awesome too!

Odd Thomas

This is the best of the original 4, but please watch Batman Forever too, it's so much fun.

Odd Thomas

Sleepy Hollow please! The best Tim Burton film imo

djKENTO

The Penguin is just a rich crime lord and his gimmick is mostly high tech umbrellas that have weapons in them. He’s just a weird shaped guy in a tux hence Penguin. But Tim Burton is a maniac who doesn’t actually like comics soooo here we are. But Burton’s influence is undeniable on the character from this movie forward, especially how “freakish” he looks. In the Arkham video games instead of a monocle he has a piece of a glass bottle stuffed around his eye socket. It’s pretty rad and gross. The man who plays Penguin’s father is Paul Reubens aka Pee Wee Herman. He’d play the role of Oswald’s father again on the TV show Gotham like 20 years later.

Lola Lirola

A detail Simone is going to love: The penguins in this movie were some of the best treated animals in the industry: They had their own refrigerated trailer and swimming pool with half a ton of fresh ice being delivered every day, along with fresh fish coming direct from the docks. The set was kept at the temperature they preferred during filming, even if the cast and crew felt freezing. They were so comfortable and pampered, the crew started finding eggs! So there are several penguins out there who are Batman Returns babies.

djKENTO

Traditionally Catwoman does not have any super powers. She’s just a great burglar. No movie has quite captured it just right. Somewhere between The Dark Knight Rises and The Batman is closer to the right vibe. There is the Halle Berry Catwoman that does have supernatural powers and is insanely camp. That movie is a great cinecringe pick. I think Catwoman here is dealing with PTSD and literal head trauma from being pushed out of a building. I don’t think it’s really meant to be magical or super or anything. Just really on the nose with symbolism.

Ethan Holgate

"I'll show you my French flipper trick" great line 😂

Paul Davey

The theme of Batman is mental illness, and where's all the bad guys in the Batman universe have had a traumatic event that flips them do bad, Bruce Wayne's traumatic experience flips him to do good. But if you dissect all the characteristics and personality traits of Bruce Wayne, each piece is represented by one the bad guys. Essentially they're the embodiment of him fighting his demons. In the case of Penguin: he represents corruption from wealth. Just because you can afford to be Batman, doesn't mean you should be Batman.

Odd Thomas

For more Michelle Pfeiffer I recommend What Lies Beneath and Stardust

JediLounger

This movie is so bonkers, very much a comic book on film. This version of Gotham also seems to be the primary inspiration for the city used in the second Arkham game. I’ve never read up on it, but visually it’s very similar. Keaton did indeed do another Batman role, but it was in The Flash movie that came out last year. That movie has a lot of baggage surrounding it, but I also did not hate it, the movie does work in some ways. You guys should check it out once you have seen more DC movies, there are constant jokes and references to the various DC eras. Would be a good reaction.

djKENTO

Hey George, to answer you question about Batman and his villains and who the biggest threats are, Penguin is rarely a serious threat. Also you’ve encountered the penguin before in The Batman as the owner of The Iceberg Lounge, which is closer to how he is in the comics over the past say 25 years. After Joker you got Ra’s Al Ghul, (Ra’s is pronounced RAYSH) who you’ll remember from Batman Begins as the character Liam Neeson uses as a puppet. In reality Ra’s is an immortal who uses a magical pit of goo called The Lazarus Pit to continuously resurrect himself. Ra’s is also the grandfather of Batman’s son Damien Wayne. Yeah Batman has a son and yes he’s a Robin. After Ra’s and Joker the playing field evens out in a lot of ways. The best Batman stories aren’t necessarily about one villain or another but often have them all intertwined. The run of comics called The Long Halloween which was the inspiration for The Batman has SO MANY characters. Carmine Falcone, The Joker, Poison Ivy, Calendar Man, CatWoman, Mad Hatter, Two-Face, Penguin AND Riddler and a ton of NEW characters too and it just works cuz all the characters are equal in the comics in many ways. Anyway really hope you continue DC… I really want you to get through the Snyderverse just so we can get to James Gunn’s Suicide Squad which is so good. I also really love Birds of Prey and think Simone will flip her lid for it.

E. D.

"Jackette“ lol, I would‘ve named the cat Jacky

E. D.

WLB is such a good thriller, as far as I can remember.. and I still hope they start watching some great Adrian Lyne movies one day

FWPJR.

Heck yes, I’m so glad you two are reacting to this. It’s my second favorite Batman movie, I’ll be watching this reaction asap

Hey errrmmm I know its the wrong place to ask but Patreon support doesnt answer me so I dont know where to ask this: I got a number showing up next to the "community" link on the left side of the page. And it is counting up, like it is with unseen notifications and such. But I have no way to get rid of it because if I click the "community" button it shows the number next to "chats" and if I click that nothing happeneds because I have no onbgoing chats. Someone said there exists a smartphone app for patreon that has more options but I dont want patreon to have my number so thats not an option. Maybe I'm acting a little autistic here but its driving me mad to have this obvious "CLICK ME CLICK ME CLICK ME" thing on screen! I have nine channels subscribed and I am seriously considering unsubscribing from all and leaving Patreon because this thing is there ruining my experience ALL the time, like an itching you cant scratch! Did anyone have that problem and found a way to fix it? You'd make me a very happy man! Thanks in advance and sorry for abusing this chat for tech support!

DM DC

If it makes you feel better about it Simone. When I was younger I saw Jaws 3, Conan the Destroyer (sequal to Conan the Barbarian), and then I saw Jaws 2, and then I saw the first one. It happens.

Logan Kerlee

I've always preferred the original to this. Joker's just the top notch Batman villain in my book.

John

Two really good Danny Devito movies to consider for a poll, Twins and Other People's Money

Opti_Frog

Screw The Dark Knight. Batman Returns is the superior Batman movie. Michelle Pfeiffer is amazing. Danny DeVito is hilariously grotesque. The whole thing is borderline experimental. It doesn't have a sexual subtext, it's just the text! If you ever get a chance to read the Tim Burton/Batman Returns interview in the July 2022 issue of Empire Magazine, do it. It's hilarious. Empire Magazine: Legend has it that Danny stayed in character on set. Michelle Pfeiffer said that if she looked over at him he'd just grunt at her. Was he always like that? Tim Burton: Pretty much. People would walk by him in the make-up chair and he'd try to bite them. But you know, seriously, you're sitting there for fucking eight hours and you're looking at yourself turning into a giant slug. It's gonna be hard not to, in a funny way. For another great fantasy movie with Michelle Pfeiffer i recommend Stardust.

Poddington

As our resident cat lady I just want to let Simone know that she is the best secretary / PA and probably makes a great cup of coffee :D

punterjoe

OMG, the "promiscuous penguins" story is my new favorite Hollywood tale 😁 I think before Tim Burton, Penguin was just a posh villain with a monocle, top hat & tux ("penguin suit"), and Catwoman was just a gymnastically adept cat burglar.... though she always had a wicked wit - even as portrayed in the silly 1960s TV show by Julie Newmar,& others. Although Michelle Pfieffer was gleefully over the top and is arguably one of the most iconic Catwomen. I can't wait for you to get to the non-Burton Batman films. 😏

Chase Lonnergan

To answer George's question concerning whether Catwoman awakened anything in people... SHe may have been one of the reasons that I spent 7 years as a BDSM instructor.

Jesse Coombs

Now that you've seen the two Michael Keaton Batman movies, it would be fun to see y'all react to "Birdman". It's a completely different type of movie, but very entertaining. Keaton plays a movie star who used to be in a big superhero franchise preparing for a play...

Pam Nail

I always thought that, after the first fall, when Selina was surrounded by all those cats, that she was somehow imbued with the ... essence(?) of the cats, given that the only power she seems to have is the nine lives (which, obviously, real cats don't have, but this is a fantasy world, so whatever). Kind of similar to how vampires make other vampires. Penguin's original plan was to kidnap the firstborn sons -- that's what he was doing in the hall of records, writing down all the names. He just got lured by Max's offer of power temporarily.

Alex Ch

There are three movies with Tim Burton, Danny DeVito and circus performers. The best is Big Fish.

E. D.

Now promise us to put The Game (1997) and Falling Down (1993) on a poll in the near future..

REDR58

An excellent and thoroughly depressing movie with an even younger Christopher Walken (and Sean Penn) is “At Close Range” from 1986. Check it out! At the time Batman Returns came out I recall there was quite a bit of press about Michelle Pfeiffer and the catsuit. Incidentally, Pfeiffer did a good number of the stunts herself, including some of the whip work where she knocks off the manikin heads in one take: https://www.giantfreakinrobot.com/ent/michelle-pfeiffer-catwoman-stunt.html

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

If I’m not mistaken Christopher Walken’s character was named in honor of the actor who played Count Orlok in 1922’s “Nosferatu”. A lot of Burton’s look and style references the German Expressionist films from the 1920s.

George, If you were with me, you wouldn't be here in this strip club shaking it for dollar bills!

🖤The Penguin, while he does come off as a joke or a B-list villain sometimes in the main canon, he is actually one of his top-tier villains as far as what threat he poses when you consider the infinite universes. He's not physically a threat obviously like Bane, but what he builds via his crime empire and smarts. The Batman who laughs said that on a lot of universes he's been to Penguin more often than not is the one Batman has to end up having a final showdown with, when people assume it would be someone like The Joker or Ra's Al Ghul. Sometimes Batman wins these showdowns, a lot of times The Penguin has. Either he gets everyone to turn against Batman, or he forces Batman to have to resort to stooping down to his level (So batman wins but he's ruined as Batman), ect. So when you count tallies across the many many universes where there is a Batman and his rouges gallery, Penguin has some real points on the board.

George, If you were with me, you wouldn't be here in this strip club shaking it for dollar bills!

🖤Fun fact not included in the trivia, the fish Danny Devito was eating was real. Just raw fish from the market. Likely from the fish stock they were feeding the penguins with LOL. Don't know if he swallowed any but definitely was taking real bites and chewing it. Also, of these 4 Batman films, the first 3 are all worth watching. You've seen Batman, and now Batman Returns, so I highly recommend Batman Forever next. It's a lot of fun. These next two are not directed by Tim Burton (tho they sort of keep that Burtonverse vibe the best they could) and Batman is played by Val Kilmer and George Clooney respectively in the next two. Some die-hard fans say only the Burton/Keaton ones are worth it, but Batman Forever was enjoyable. Jim Carrey as the Riddler is off the rails. Maybe it's just because I watched it as a kid so I have that connection with it, IDK. You can totally stop at Batman Forever but I think it'd be funny to watch Batman & Robin for a Cinecringe watch. I know George already covered the movie on his Cinecringe channel but you two roasting it here would make it worthwhile I think.

REDR58

A good dramatic Michael Keaton movie is called “Clean and Sober” from 1988. Check it out.

Bennett Holleman

The name Max Shreck is a reference to the actor who played a vampire in Nosferatu.

Jacob King

I’ve seen that suit in a museum exhibit and the thing that stuck is how incredibly tiny she was.

Jacob King

I enjoy this movie but it’s worth pointing out that Burton is making a dark and gritty adaptation of the 60s TV show. Penguin runs for Mayor is even a plot from the show. The most recent movie, The Batman, is the most comic book feeling media adaptation. Which is just a way of saying trying to work out Catwoman’s deal from this is a dead end, though it did inspire the Halle Berry movie. Burton had planned to complete his trilogy and the legend is McDonalds and the toy companies were so mad that it wasn’t a kids film Warner Brothers took it away from him. I don’t know how true that is because the next two are very tonally and structurally modelled on Returns rather than the more successful Batman ’89. Jim Carey’s Riddler in particular is Catwoman redux. The two super villains and one normal villain thing is copied in all subsequent Batman movies.

Matt

Now you guys should check out BIRDMAN 2014 also starting Michael Keaton and kind of references his batman films, its one of my favorite movies ever won the academy awards that year for best film, director, screenplay and cinematography

Skyruff

The whole 9 lives for cats is very old. No one knows exactly where it came from... but influences are thought to be .... 1) Egyptian myths of the sun god taking the form of a cat and having eight children. 2) Eastern myths about nine tailed foxes (transferred to cats a favorite animal of the tribes) brought to Europe via the migration of what are refereed to as Gypsies from northern present day India. This cultural wave brought a wholistic change to European superstitions. 3) Christian/Jewish nine choirs of Angels and Demons where cats are believed to be able to see those beings around us. Thus they have a paw in nine worlds. There are many more myths that could have played a part. The oddest part is that Europeans have always seen dogs as there closest pets but even in pre-history, they kept friendly with local cats to help defend from vermin etc. More myths and legends have been invented about cats then all other domesticated animals. The reason generally given is that we never "feel" like we domesticated cats. We seem to just agree to live together with some basic ground rules. Given this, cats always "appear" to have a sense of mystery.

Joseph Bateman

My 3 favorite Batman movies were Batman, Batman Returns, and Batman Forever. That was my childhood. Right after this movie was released Batman The Animated Series started and that was just a great time for everyone. How about Danny Elfman with the score! Amazing. I have 2 suggestions: Dick Tracy & Edward Scissorhands both from 1990 those are 2 other movies scored by Danny Elfman and E.S. is another Tim Burton film. Dick Tracy is from a 1930s comic strip about a detective trying to bring down a crime lord and they all have crazy names like Prune face, The Brow, Lips, Big Boy, Flat Top, and they all look like their names lol

sarCC

I really, REALLY hope you watch The LEGO Batman Movie and Mask Of The Phantasm: they are both so, so great! I'd also recommend Batman Beyond: Return Of The Joker; I don't think it's terribly necessary to have watched the Batman Beyond series beforehand. The movie gives you the jist of the show's premise adequately to be able to enjoy the film's standalone nature.

MD Simmons

I know your instincts are telling you to watch the next 90s Batman movie, but the best experience would be to watch the movie from the 1960s starring Adam West.

Theoshin

Birdman please

Michael Green

I genuinely like this movie a lot, but it's such a bizarre thing. Batman doesn't function as the protagonist in a lot of respects; those story beats are shunted to Penguin and Catwoman. It's a strange and lumpy movie, but by God Devito and Pfeiffer are absolutely killing it and sometimes the vibe is enough, you know?

Jared Winn

“Fell in a vat…of cats” lmao George and I made the same joke like 2 seconds apart. The thing to remember with “is this the origin of Catwoman” and “is this what really happened to Penguin” is there’s like 90 years of history for these characters so the answer is almost alway yes and no lol, just like Marvel.

BangDroid

We had a cat when I was younger living at home, step mum was told it was a girl by store and named it Mia. Later the vet confirmed it was male but we kept the name. Mia was a beautiful Russian Blue purebred, a very unique personality with so many quirks. Several years later when we moved he sadly disappeared, just vanished and we never could find him. Mia was loved by us all and still missed.

BangDroid

The similarities between Penguin and what Rudy Giuliani became is striking.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

I feel like that’s why I’ve always had mixed feelings about Keaton’s take on Batman. Not that he isn’t trying but with the first 2 movies in particular either Burton or the studio seem much more interested in highlighting the rogues gallery and Keaton’s Batman got the short end of the stick.

G Lam

we had a male Cockatiel for a few year called "Lady" for exactly the same reason

Smooticus

I developed a few kinks, thanks to this movie

Com1xguy

Paul Reubens as Mr. Cobblepot is one of my favorite things of all time.

David Lonewolf Wright

I am not a fan of the direction they took with The Penguin in this movie and felt his initial plan of killing all of those children was a bit too dark. On the other side, I think they did a great job with Catwoman. Loved that scene when Bruce and Selina recognized who each other were. I would say this rewatch has improved my feelings on it, but it still sits in 3rd place of the initial four Batman movies.
