Ted Lasso: Season 3 - Episode 7 - 9 - Patreon Version

Comments

Jeff K

Oh, what a happy day to get three episodes in one drop. Especially since episode 9 is one of my favorites. I knew Simone would be delighted by the You've Got Mail intro, and she did not disappoint. (Simone: did you pick up on the season two reference, with Sam's Bantr name being a play on Tom's and Rebecca's being a play on Meg's?) Also, George saying, "Sounds like a kitchen" (or something to that effect) at the start of episode seven makes me recall: Y'all really should watch The Bear. It's so good, but apparently from what I've seen from people who've worked in kitchens, they jokingly (half-jokingly?) say it triggers PTSD because of how realistic it is.

Sumner Hayes

A first edition Sense and Sensibility in decent shape is currently worth on the order of $100,000, plus or minus (more than twice that if it's near-perfect with original boards).

Paul Davey

Interestingly, the lasso was not invented by someone named Ted. In actual fact the lasso was invented by Native Americans, who used it effectively in war against the Spanish invaders.

Tay Schumaker

This is where the biggest lull in the season hits for me. With plot lines given too much time (all of Keely’s plot could probably have been cut) and manufactured moments. Like Sam’s dad seeing the restaurant. It’s a nice moment, but upon any inspection it makes no sense. He didn’t know the name? And even if he didn’t, it’s literally on the sign outside. There’s almost 0 chance he wouldn’t have seen it till that moment.

Chase Lonnergan

Agreed. So many of the subplots in this part of the show are either unnecessary, tonally inconsistent with the rest of the series, propagandistic, or utterly pointless. And almost all of them are poorly executed. I think they needed to pad the runtime, so they added a bunch of stuff at the last minute and didn't think any of it through.

FWPJR.

I have a question for anyone who watches this show, do you have to know anything about soccer/football to get the jokes and understand the show? I would like to watch it but I don’t watch soccer/football and I know absolutely nothing about it.

Jeff K

Not really. It's not really a sports show, it's just a show set around sports. There might be a couple references that you miss but overall, there's not enough soccer-specific stuff to detract from anything. About the only thing that's soccer-specific that you'd probably need to know is the concept of relegation/promotion, but given it's a show about a coach who knows nothing about the sport, it makes it easier since characters literally explain those things to him on screen. It's basically built for people who know nothing about soccer to enjoy a show about soccer.

When French Richard was blowing kisses about his hairy butt, i fell off my chair laughing.

- This season aired in 2023 (season one was 2020), but unfortunately anti-immigration is always a timely topic. - I know Barbara has been prickly up to now, but there was no way she would (or would even be empowered to) write a statement like that. On top of which, she clearly looks like she hates having to pass it on to Keeley. That's one moment that makes me soften on Barbara. - So the Kenny Rogers singalong was "cringe" a couple of episodes ago, but singing along to "Hey Jude" is all good?! - I'm glad both of you are warming back up to Nate and seeing what's going on with him. SO MANY fans when this season aired seemed OFFENDED at just having to see him in an episode, much less being asked to sympathize with him. EW. - I think most of the stuff with Isaac works on rewatch with him being mad about Colin not confiding in him -- EXCEPT the moment where he doesn't want to touch his hand. That seems like such a misdirect to what we're afraid is going on. - Love that Colin is the hero of that last match, like this great weight has been lifted and he can play like he was meant to play.

Terry Yelmene

Ep. 7 You okay Simone? I think these two really, really 'loved' this one! Ep. 8 Then the bottom drops! But, at least... NO ONE... really had 'Paris'. (And George, Ted can't be replaced - for 'anyone' in his family!) Bye Jack! Hello Jade! Ep. 9 Roy's speech - and - Issac's reasoning - and - Rupert's test for Nate... another great episode.

Jeff K

By the way guys, you've definitely heard Sam's dad's voice: he was in Game of Thrones, as the main dude Danarys dealt with in Qarth in season two.

Andi Herr

The real-life "inspiration" for the home secretary in the series is called Suella Braverman.

Jeff K

Also of interest for episode 8 with Keeley's photos getting leaked: the episode was co-written by Keeley Hazell, a model who Keeley is at least partly based on (she was dating Sudeikis for a while, and then became a writer on the show and also plays Bex). Also, the book Ted is reading to Henry in that episode is by Marcus Rashford, a famous footballer who has also become well known for his activism, and who some of Sam's storylines are at least partly inspired by as well.

Ryan Skinner

The Strings That Bind Us, 3x07, is perhaps my favorite episode of the entire series. It has so many truly laugh-out-loud moments, combined with good development on the football front, and of course one of the most heartbreaking and emotional mini-stories with Sam's restaurant and father. The setup with the bigoted politician and the fallout from her interactions with Sam is so tragically true to life that it hurts (to the degree that the phrase "shut up and dribble" was taken directly from something said by journalist Laura Ingraham to LeBron James back in 2018), and Tojeeb Jimoh who plays Sam absolutely CRUSHES his outburst/breakdown in the locker room (I mean, he crushes always; I can't wait to see more of him in future shows/movies). His dad's advice of "Don't fight back; fight forward." is so great. That scene with Jamie taking the reigns of leading the team during halftime is so wonderful seeing him come into his own as a leader, and even if it isn't in fact #4, Dani was right about acknowledging his selflessness for the good of the team. So wonderful. Nate's moment of growth when he looks at himself in the mirror and doesn't spit is relatively minor compared to everything else happening in the episode, but is also really wonderful and worth pointing out. Basically what I'm saying is hi, I'm also Simone, a blubbering mess by the end of that one. Thanks guys for the reactions. <3

Y’all are spoiling us with the three episode drop! Can’t wait to watch this tonight.

HeyHeyJK

As much as I would love for them to watch "Community" - I voted for it in a recent poll - the show closest to what I think resonates most with this show is "The Good Place". It's in my trifecta of 'feel good' shows - the 3rd being "Schitt's Creek" (which they should be legally required to watch as Canadians) - and the thing all three shows have in common, aside from the fact that they're all hilarious - is that they all knew when it was time to end, rather than drag the series out through countless seasons with diminishing returns and vapid episodes to fill the quota. Plus, they all show us how to be better people without preaching as they lead by example.

Jared Winn

I stopped watching the series a few episodes ago when they originally aired because I was worried about how the Colin storyline was going. I’m glad I’m able to see it now with you all and I’m so happy with how this episode went.

Jeff K

So finally just finished things up: the episode 9 title is a reference to the musical La Cage aux Folles (which is what the movie The Birdcage is based on), which is obviously about a gay couple trying to hide their sexuality. The reason the opening felt like a musical, and then the end song (which is from La Cage aux Folles), is very much intentional.

Mastervodo

Weepy Simone is the best Simone!

Ste Rawlings

Wow Simone really letting Roy off the hook because she fancies him huh?

Travis H

I haven’t watched yet but am glad you watched episode 8/9 together. I have always felt that the way Isaac handles the Colin situation (which is rough) comes off a lot worse when you have any delays between the two episodes.

Ste Rawlings

Roy's speech is great. It's also a great example of why so many people were wrong in completely turning on Nate during season 2.

Terry Yelmene

I REALLY like 'Definitely, Maybe' The Rachel Weisz character 'Summer' was great, however... even tho Abigail Breslin stole the show,, I kinda fell for Isla Fischer's character too! Oh my bad, I guess it was Summer 'Hartley' and it was Will 'Hates'! LOL

REDR58

Totally agree about Barbara. She looks very uncomfortable for having to hand Keely that statement.

Jared Jemison

I've never seen this show, and now I don't think I ever will. To me, it's just something keeping me from Breaking Bad reactions. :p

JBK405

Look I'm not saying I AGREE with Coach Beard calling Jimmy Page overrated, but I am saying that he definitely has a point. Jimmy Page and Joe Walsh have two very distinct playing styles and you don't need to try to choose one as 'the best'. But Joe Walsh is undersold and so many people hype Jimmy Page who don't even KNOW his work purely on reputation. ....anyway... I also love this trio of episodes, but particularly how Isaac's explosion of rage actually builds off the first season. When Ted and the team were still getting to know each other, and Roy was still captain, there was a lot of positive reinforcement for player anger. It was viewed as "passion" and "drive". Nate's motivating speech to the team at Everton climaxed with insulting Roy and telling him to get angry again. Roy in turn complimented Nate when he elbowed a door and cracked the glass. Remember, Roy specifically picked Isaac to succeed him as captain because of an outburst of anger when Isaac smashed a TV by throwing a chair, and Roy even said "keep breaking TVs" when handing over the armband. Isaac's been told for years "You breaking stuff is GOOD" so it's a natural outlet for him. Just like it is for Roy in many situations. And just like that has caused problems for Roy and he's learning to grow beyond that, now it's the same for Isaac. Unfortunately for Isaac, his outburst over the line was public instead of private, so he can't deal with it quietly and emerge a better man, he's got to shoulder the public backlash as well. I was so disappointed in Jack because I absolutely love Jodi Balfour and I WANTED to like her. She is incredibly endearing and I wanted her to be another Rebecca, who was kind and supportive despite being filthy rich. Instead she is just normal filthy rich.

Travis H

Again I love the Colin arc, but I do wish they toned down the Isaac reaction just a bit. As a gay guy they took it a bit too far (especially when he removes his hand from Colin’s in team chant thing) that I was generally worried that they just killed any chance of me liking Isaac again. I had people in my life that made it difficult for me to feel comfortable with coming out and I don’t put up with people/characters like that anymore. Thankfully I think they completely nailed that final Isaac/Colin scene! Special shoutout to the silent interaction between Sam/Jamie when Sam is given the captains badge! I’m really curious how I personally will react to the next episode. I really dislike it but seem to be the only person on the internet with that opinion. I hope I turn around on it, I like liking things.

Jay S

I agree, episode 7 is one of the best episodes in the series

Jesse Coombs

Speaking of songs, here's my humble plea for you to maybe check out "Crazy Ex-Girlfriend". It's a wonderful show with a lot of heart and a lot of hilarious songs.

Ryan Skinner

Hey there! Yeah, I think this might be the first I've seen someone say they don't like 3x10! Don't want to put spoilers in the comments here, but I'll be curious your thoughts come next week, should you decide to comment about what you haven't liked about it!

Persnickity

I'm watching the post video. I hope y'all know the wombo combo is what makes y'all work. George is cinnamon and Simone is sugar. You both brought the buns.... O.O dont make it weird cinnabinge those buns

Onno Smits

Some really great episodes in this set!

Jon

this season is REALLY superior that season 2 (who was not good at all)... glad they finished by taking example of season 1, in term of writing, caracter developing, and story telling....... I don't know what the f%ck happened in season 2 🤷🏻 (new writers? new show runners?)

HeyHeyJK

Great reactions to a great trio of episodes. Keep the tissues handy for the next three as well.

REDR58

“The guy from Cream” that Higgins mocks Rebecca about is Eric Clapton who was the guitarist for the band, Cream.

Ryan Skinner

This is such a strange comment to me! I've never seen anyone speak down on season 2; in fact as a whole it's probably my personal favorite season the three. If anything, I believe there was a staff change in season 3 (Bill Lawrence was less involved, I think?), but nothing major with season 2 (at least not that I've heard about). Anyway, different strokes and all that. But man... season 2 hate, really?! lol :D

HeyHeyJK

You really can't call Jimmy Page overrated. He's simply one of the greatest of all time but, you're right that JP and JW are very different players, and I love them both (hell, I was just playing 'Funk #49' on my guitar last night WHILE I was watching these reactions!). Quick, pick your favorite Jimmy Page solo of all time, I'll go first. "Since I've Been Loving You" is not only one of my all-time favorite Zeppelin songs, but it has the most blistering and bluesy solo by Page ever, IMHO, of course.

HeyHeyJK

So many of those songs were written by the genius that was Adam Schlesinger, most well known as one of the two main members of the great band, Fountains of Wayne. Sadly, he was one of the very first 'celebrity' deaths reported in the Covid pandemic. The issue I would think if G&S tried to react to that show is having to cut the songs down to almost nothing, which would lose so much of the show's content and charm.

MacGuffinStuff

That Cranberries song to me is the theme song to Derry Girls, not that I'm recommending it for the channel I just personally love that show, which is probably pretty weird, a guy in his forties liking a coming of age show about teenage girls in Northern Ireland in the 90s, but it's funny and has a lot of heart. And that "Just a bit outside" comment I think was another nod to Major League, which I do recommend btw, very fun baseball movie. I actually thought at first that this show based it's premise on Major League because it's about an owner's wife taking over a team and intentionally ruining it, but of course the show changed course and Rebecca ended up being a great character. And oh man do I love Hey Jude, I've heard people say they hate the Beatles and I'm like, how can you hear a song like that, or Dear Prudence, or A Day In the Life, or so many more, and HATE the Beatles? But to each their own I guess.

Cubonemaker

Meant to say this when I watched these earlier in the week. If you wanna see a real life example of how cool total football can be, look up videos on “Barcelona tiki taka”. They played a cool variation based on the original concept.

HeyHeyJK

I didn't remember until rewatching your reaction that when Beard is giving his Total Football presentation and he shows the Dutch man's photo and asks if anyone knows who it is, that Isaac says it's Tim Robinson from "I Think You Should Leave" and it really does kind of look like Tim. ITYSL is a hilarious comedy series on Netflix that G&S should really watch, although not for the channel because every entire episode is only about 20 minutes long. It is absurd/cringe comedy at its finest and also features actor Sam Richardson who plays African billionaire Edwin Akufo in TL (and who we'll see again in the next episode reaction). Okay, that's my totally significant and worthy comment for today.

Joe D. MacGuffinstuff

Now I remember where I've heard Jason Sudeikis say "Hush your butts" before, it was in an SNL skit, Maine Justice, the one with Jamie Foxx and Charlie Day, a good one too, I laughed anyway, so ridiculous.

ShoNuff3000

Do you guys remember what part Nate played in the movie Interstellar?

Amelie W

I'm sure Roy could get a gold whistle, but obviously, yelling "whistle" is funnier.

Rav Low

I'm a little late to the party here, but I think it must be said: Dr. Jacob or "Jake" wasn't Ted's Psychologist. He was Michelle's Psychologist, who they then used for couples counseling. Which in and of itself is WILDLY unethical. And then Dr. Jacob MICHELE'S PSYCHOLOGIST began having a romantic relationship with HIS PATIENT after suggesting she take space away from her husband leading to a divorce. It's gross, and it makes it seem like Jake basically sabotaged their marriage to get in Michele's pants. I just wanted to say it because I didn't see you guys comment on quite how gross that part was.

Rav Low

Like straight up on it's face, Jake being in a relationship with Michele is screwed up. There is no scenario where it is okay.
