Hell to the yeah. This movie is awesome.

Matthew Richson

The whole general premise is just a gold mine. Drop a Predator into any time period and BOOM, you’ve got a movie.

ShoNuff3000

I had one problem with this movie. It should be obvious. Someone told me the gun Danny Glover is gifted end of two, came from this movie.

Happy Hanukkah

Uh... OK: Our father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name....

Balmung

I also recommend Predators

ShoNuff3000

Tons of comic crossovers.

Zero Cochrane

“ If it bleeds, we can kill it.”

Gerald Walker

There is a pretty good Predator vs Batman comic

Byron

IIRC, the director of this was also the director for 10 Cloverfield Lane. Safe to say I’m a fan.

Meggie Doodles

This is such an incredible movie! I watched this before the originals and even so it's one of my top favorites. Highly recommend watching the Dead Meat Podcast episode about Prey since they go in-depth into the making of and the reception from Native communities. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UO-LcKJ8Xa4

This is definitely in the top 3 of the Predator films. It took me by surprise how well done this was because the other Predator sequels have been lackluster. I especially love how they took care to make it a historical piece and to choose native actors. But the story itself was tightly written and well performed by everyone.

Trevor Rotan

They’ve had Predators in lots of comics, like Wolverine went against one. The coolest one I read was an encounter with an architect from Prometheus. I’ll save the details if you’ve haven’t seen those yet.

Jobbe Smit

Fun fact, there is a dub version of this movie that is language accurate.

ShoNuff3000

Yautjas? Yautji? We're a slave race that over came their masters.

David Jenkins

The story continues with the drawings during the closing credits. You miss out on a lot if you don't pay attention.

Daniel Popp

And a lot of people misinterpreted those drawings as the tribe being slaughtered.

ShoNuff3000

Okay here's my issue with the movie. All in all, it was a good movie. Initially, my issue was the technology vs 1791 warriors = short film. As I watched the movie, they did it in such a way that made me think this is possible so that was good. The one part that dropped it a notch in my eyes is when the predator gets its hand around the female warriors neck, body slams her and ends up losing. Yautjas hand on neck of prey that took it's arm...had already overhead pressed a bear...any human head popped like a pimple.

Amber Midthunder was amazing on legion. its an xmen tv series that is just phenomenal. she stands out even among the strong cast on that series. please consider it for your tv watchalong poll.

Zero Cochrane

There are plenty of crossover in comics. Predator vs, Batman, Wolverine etc. But for my money the first Batman vs Predator is a 3 issue stand alone story. It’s one of the best.

michael clarke

some must see indigenous films: once were warriors rhymes for young ghouls killers of the flower moon we were children

Young Blood Priest

I get where you’re coming from but I think it’s a minor contrivance when compared with the overall series of movies. At the end of the first movie the Predator backhands Arnold so hard he flys thru the air without knocking him out. Then he punches Arnold in the face and gut several times. All without breaking ribs, his jaw, or knocking out any teeth. All these Predator movies have things in them you have to except, overlook or laugh at. For instance. The two contrivances I still giggle about: 1) The fact dude couldn’t seem to remember his helmet was the guidance system for the bolts he fired and… 2) I loved the dog and his connection with the main character but…in one scene I think I saw him doing trigonometry. 😂. His intelligence was way over the top. These are all minor things to me and didn’t take away from my enjoyment one bit. But that’s just my opinion. This is still my second fave in the series but I won’t argue with anyone who has it #1 on their list. Not at all.

Legion is outstanding. Should definitely be watched by all, even if you’re not part of a reaction channel.

Jeff Klonowski

I'd like to see a predator in other timeliness.

Patrick

This is my favorite Predator movie since the original. My ONLY complaints, is that the CGI of the bear/deer/mountain lion look pretty damn bad considering this is a newish movie. Also, mountain lions don't "Roar", they aren't even capable of it. I suppose it is way more intimidating this way, but still.

Darin Foat

The best thing in this movie is the dog. And that's not a dig at the movie. It's just a really awesome dog.

Jinyatta

2nd best bear punch on film, after Nic Cage in The Wicker Man.

JBK405

Oh I have been WAITING for this one. I loved this film so much, it is unquestionably the best of all the "Predator" sequels and I'm never quite sure if I should place it above or below the original. I wrote a lengthy piece online when it first came out, but to summarize: The reason this and the original film stand out where the others don't is that they both introduce characters and an independent plotline completely separate from the aliens. You could make a cohesive short film out of the non-predator content all by itself. The original film starts as a story about American interventionism in Latin America and the exploitation of their own soldiers. "Prey" starts as a story about maturing into adulthood and reflexively bucking societal expectations while also growing to meet them. The other films are all about "Let's fight off this alien" right from the very beginning. The craziest mashup concept of Predator has to be "Archie vs. Predator" which is a REAL THING that was officially published. The story of the pistol from "Predator 2" was originally told in a comicbook many years ago, and it does not match up with what we see here. In the comic, "Raphael Adolini" is a pirate captain and he and a Predator are forced to fight side-by-side, before he gifts the pistol to the Predator when he is mortally wounded. They crafted a new story for this film.

Thirty Year Old Mulberry Field

This is a wonderful explanation as to why this movie felt like a proper follow up for this series. Like many others, I was drooling at the thought of plucking a Predator into a random culture and/or period in history and seeing what would happen but to keep that formula from going stale quickly it should be used as an opportunity to explore more with each movie’s subtext and themes. Is your write up on any website that you could send a link to?

David Gallagher

Ah the return of the Edmonton hate. its been a while. As a happy Edmontonian, George's bile somehow fills me with glee.

Wrencher86

You guys doing this review finally motivated me to watch this and, uh, it's not good. It feels rushed, the characters are shallow, the geography is super weird (I live in/near the northern great plains, it doesn't look like that and it sure as shit doesn't change from mountains to plains to forests that quickly), the effects are subpar. Like, the Predator looks cool but this whole thing banks on you knowing what the Predator is and already thinking it's cool. The movie just kind of lurches from one scene to the next without really tying anything together particularly well. The "can't see me/him" thing feels unearned (to say nothing of how quickly the flower petals take effect) as does the targeting thing. She wasn't in a spot where she could view the arrows hitting the dots at literally any point (maybe once, but that guy was facing away from her). The "bleeds/kill it" line feels like a cheap throwback. IDK, man. If other people enjoyed this, more power to them. But to me it felt like a made for TV movie and not a particularly good one, at that.

Grandalf

I agree. Kind of an "excuse to get rid of old popcorn" movie. I know it's a small nitpick, but I can't stand when writers put crap in just because "wow, wouldn't that be cool?". Case in point, ruining a perfectly good weapon in the tomahawk by tying a rope to it. SMH with a facepalm.

PR3M3

Definitely my favorite predator movie.

Godrick

i like that they SLIGHTLY downgraded predators weapons. It's still more advanced then anything we have, but it makes sense their weapons technology improved substantially over 200 years from this movie to arnolds movie

Godrick

To Georges point about fancy gadgets ruining the test- Predator subtlety keeps it fair the whole movie. When he fought the Bear he did it bare handed, because the Bear had no weapons. When he killed the snake he used his blades, because the snake used fangs. When the Comanche used projectiles and spears, so did Predator. He never uses a type of weapon beyond what his opponent possesses, he just has a superior version of whatever weapon his opponent chooses. And to that point, it turns out you never want to try and throw a net at a Predator.....

Lannisen

He also uses explosives after the French burn down the forest, and the net after he was trapped.

Kron0n

@ 19:20 I totally agree. I just watched this film thinking, this is the least honourable game hunting I've ever seen. Like you're bringing nukes to a stick fight. How does this prove anything?

Wrencher86

To be fair (to this movie I don't like), big game hunting typically isn't "honorable". It's a dentist on a guided tour shooting animals that are old/sick/injured as part of conservation management. So the Predator using an advantage is pretty consistent with trophy hunting in general. That doesn't make the movie any better. Just feels like there's *a lot* of other criticisms you could go with.

michael tittel

as for the question of more franchise collaborations in different media, dark horse comics in the 90s had both Predator and Alien IPs, and together with DC Comics made practically any crossover you could imagine between those and DCs Superheroes. There was a pretty nice four issue comic I remember of Batman figuring out what hunted and killed criminals in Gotham City, stalking the stalker ;)

Aaron M

Yeah the hunt is super unfair. I like to imagine that this is the Predator equivalent of a dentist going on "safari" with guides, guns, and a jeep and then coming back with a trophy and a story of how cool they were. Maybe a Predator comes back and shows off his trophies to his mates at the office.

Luis Torrefranca

From Predator 2, the pistol wasn't picked up from a bunch of other weapons. It was in the belt of the predator that gave it. It was a personal gift.

Luis Torrefranca

The detail about the dog casting is so cool!
