I don't remember ever seeing anyone pointing out how the screenwriters "give" Lament for the Rohirrim (Where Is the Horse and the Rider?) (and its "introduction") to Theoden and thus frame subsequent developments as a response. "Responding" in reverse order: the sun rises, the horn blows, the horse and the rider charge, his men rally to him... Gee, might Theoden come to realize who he is?
