The rat scene is why the blu ray is banned in the UK, Cameron wouldn’t cut it for home release

May I suggest you watch 'Under Pressure: Making the Abyss'. It's available on YT, will give you an insight into the hell the production went through to get the movie made!

Matthew Johnson

This movie is Cameron’s divorce movie, the writing and making of it heavily influenced by his marriage and split from Gale Anne Hurd. In a lot of ways it’s his most personal movie and I think that’s why I will always have such an emotional response to it, even more than his others. GREAT reaction guys, this movie had you and it was a joy to watch.

horrible

Heart monitors, yes. just yes

Dan

It was a bonkers movie to even attempt, and the fact that it put everyone through hell certainly speaks to that. Still, you really have to marvel that the movie actually turned out amazing, when most movies that have those kinds of behind-the-scenes horror stories usually end up being abandoned or edited into a huge flop for nothing. It's a mind-blowing film, and I'm glad we have it for all that it cost. And respect to Ed Harris and the others for managing to turn it into a success despite their traumas.

Zero Cochrane

This is hands down my favourite James Cameron movie.

James Cameron is such a difficult director to reckon with…I loved this movie, so much, as a kid. And then followed by Terminator 2? Plus Titanic/ Avatar/ Aliens, etc. What an unbelievable body of work. But I’m also a big believer that someone doesn’t have to be an asshole to be a genius, creatively, and that coddling tyrannical directors has to end…even harder for me to reconcile than Kubrick, given the technical scope of his projects.

Rob Parry

The behind scenes stories from this movie reminds me of a joke from Amy Poehler at I think the Golden Globes when James Cameron's ex-wife Kathryn Bigelow was nominated for best director for Zero Dark Thirty. "I haven't been following the controversy surrounding Zero Dark Thirty," Poehler said name-checking director Kathryn Bigelow. "But when it comes to torture, I trust the woman who spent three years married to James Cameron."

Jonny

Would love you two to wear heart rate monitors..... but I don't want an awkward moment during a sexy scene and George's heart rate goes up hahahah!!

lmao considering the guy worked for years in the porn industry i doubt tame sex scenes in movies would have any effects on him... Simone on the other hand hahaha. that being siad a heart rate monitor def sounds funny.

Meggie Doodles

My dad showed me this movie when I was 11 and it sparked my lifelong love for survival horror/thriller stories. I hope you guys can react to Society of the Snow (2023) on Netflix soon!

Hearing George and Simone talk about how they'd trust Ed Harris with anything just made me think of the How Did This Get Made episode for Geostorm, when Mantzoukas says, "No one has ever been safe with Ed Harris!" And it also reminds me: George and Simone should really watch The Right Stuff for more Ed Harris goodness. (It's also basically a perfect movie.)

Up to a point, you can include Hitchcock on that list. In the later years of his career he could be a cruel person, even more so when he basically tried to rape Tippi Hedren after making "The Birds" and then went on to intentionally destroy her career.

I have loved this movie ever since I was a kid. The effects, the lovable characters, Cameron’s ability to shoot in claustrophobic settings, and the amazing acting made it one of my favorites. Then after I saw the behind the scenes accounts and read about the filming, I felt so guilty. Mary Elizabeth(Lindsay) walked off set while screaming at Cameron during the filming of the revival scene because they did over 40 or so takes while she was freezing and topless. Ed Harris nearly drowned when they fed him oxygen down the wrong tube one time, and the drowning scene that George mentioned. This was an arduous filming process, and to his credit, James was right there in the scuba suits along with them. Though he has admitted after the fact that he “lost perspective” while filming this movie. The filming underwater was done in two massive tanks constructed for the film at an abandoned nuclear power plant project. The water was kept dark by putting a layer of black beads that floated at the surface, and a black tarp was draped over it. Also yes, Armageddon was a total ripoff of this film.

Yeah, Ed is another actor who has a horrible reputation in the business. Private film crew Facebook groups often have threads of what a nightmare he is to work with and that he's just not a nice guy at all, which is just sad. He's an amazing actor though, so that's what counts the most at the box office. Also agree on "The Right Stuff" - fantastic film.

HeyHeyJK

Okay, first of all, since you're both fans of Ed Harris AND medieval-y stuff, PLEASE look on YouTube for the trailer of a film called "Knightriders" from 1981 (look for the one on Shout!Studios channel). It was directed by George Romero of "Night of the Living Dead" fame, and it would have been an amazing film for George's now defunct Cinecringe channel. If you watch it, I'd love to hear what you thought. Moving on ... Yeah, this is another film that makes me sad you couldn't watch it on the big screen (or at least a big TV). Those underwater scenes really had more impact in a dark theatre and a large screen. And that scene where they revive Lyndsey still makes me cry, every time. It's one of the most emotional scenes ever and so perfectly acted and directed. Great reaction though (of course) and so glad you watched it. Cameron's reputation as an asshole was well earned by all accounts, and I don't really believe that the ends justify the means - especially when it comes down to how you treat people (he was an asshole to Kate Winslet during the "Titanic" shoot by calling her names because of her weight, for instance) - you can't deny how amazing this film came out on the technical side with all the real underwater sets, cinematography, etc.

Ma enough ny famous directors are accused of having 'God complexes', and I've read enough anecdotes about James Cameron to be open to believing anh horror story I hear if it involves possibly harming actors (or animals) to 'get the shot'. I can understand some actors never want to work with him again, while others take the approach 'it didn't actually kill me & the movies a mega=hit - so they keep returning. I feel badly for the tortured cast & crew, but it IS one helluva cinematic experience.

Pam Nail

Ed Harris and Mary Elizabeth Mastrantonio both disowned this film and refuse to talk about it in any way to this day. They did some press and promotion when the film first came out because they were contractually obligated, but nowadays they pretty much pretend the movie never happened. Which honestly is probably for the best for their own mental well being. I love this movie a lot and was very happy to get to finally see it in a theater late last year, but I do feel a bit guilty for loving it (perhaps the best use of the term "guilty pleasure") because of the hell everyone went through on set.

Jason McCloud

Ed Harris is one of my favorite actors and the scene in the pool is top tier from him.

Dan Holmes

Lots of great films only exist through hardship and abuse, not condoning it but it's true. Aliens, The Shining and this one. You should still research behind the scenes cause it's incredible what James Cameron pulled off and how they shot this, even if it gave almost everyone a mental breakdown lol

Happy Hanukkah

Of course I'm a cork-licker! How else do you judge a wine in them hoity-toity french restaurants? Come on, have some savoir-faire, you plebes! (Do so, and I guarantee that the sommelier will be so intimidated by your obvious expertise, he will attempt to avoid you henceforth.)

REDR58

While the “USS Montana” submarine in the movie is fictional (at the time the movie was filmed), it is portraying an Ohio-class Navy submarine and those are about 560 feet long. There is now a real submarine named “Montana” but it is of a different class.

Byron

I would suggest that it’s not that lots of great films only exist through hardship and abuse but rather lots of great films were made in an abusive environment. There might be a correlation, but that doesn’t mean there’s causation. For example, a visionary director with a specific vision and perfectionist tendencies may also be more likely to be abusive and more likely to be forgiven for it. It doesn’t mean that the movie couldn’t have been made without the abuse.

The line "A Spkinter Factor of 9.5" was relating the Panic Mode to a serious Earthquake wurg a Richter Scalre reading of 9.5 where the Scale has never reached 10...

James Falato

And isn't it interesting that Ed Harris Stared in "The Abyss" in 1989 about Dangers going to the Bottom of the Oceans and the 1995 "Apollo 13" about Dangers going to the Moon...

Darin Foat

If you love Ed Harris, you guys should watch The Right Stuff.

Jeremy Charlie

I am so glad you're doing this. I remember when movies were an event.

Phillyman!!

Another Ed Harris movie you should watch is Gone Baby Gone.

Shpadow

No. What? No. It's a different way of saying "pucker factor" which is talking about the fact that when you're stressed or nervous, your asshole puckers. Because it's a sphincter. Pucker factor is 1-10 because "everything else is so why not," not because earthquakes. It's stating a feeling - or asking about the room's feelings - and simultaneously phrasing it with color to feel better about the situation.

Crystal

the music/ singing as a team bonding thing is so true. I used to work at a motorcycle shop, and we could only play certain bands that everyone could agree on, all coming from different backgrounds. the ones to make the cut: Johnny Cash, Beastie Boys, Radiohead, Tom Waits & The Clash

John Richards

the song in the movie is Linda Ronstadt's cover of "Willing", written by Lowell George and first recorded by his band "Little Feat"

Renee MeowMeow Beans

If we're recommending Ed Harris movies, we have to include Romero's Creepshow - 'cause we get Ed Harris disco dancing. That alone is worth the price of admission! (He's great of course!) 😆

Renee MeowMeow Beans

OMG I didn't know if anyone else knew Knightriders - I kind of love it, probably because of Tome Savini and Ed Harris. I think I saw it on Freevee. It's so wild. 😁

romeo-a-go-goat

George: There's just something about Ed Harris that I trust him implicitily. Me: Clearly you've never watched Westworld

Rachel W

wish they's have watched the theatrical cut-which is much better than the silly preachy alien version, imo.
