Oh I'm so ready to cry my eyes out with you, let's goooo

Oh no...

Since you’re probably gonna react to the Odyssey (once it’s available on platforms) I wanted to petition for you guys to react to Troy (2004) first, personally I like it more than the Odyssey, but I’m saying it because they are technically connected (one is a continuation of the other) so I think it’s a good idea so that you can have the story clear and in chronological in your heads. Troy is not super canonical with the original story but I really want to see your reaction to it.

Crispin

Is it being 5am gonna stop me watching this? No, no it is not 😆

No matter how many times I watch this movie I’ll always end up crying! It’s such an emotional rollercoaster, and I think the production team did an AMAZING job handling serious themes like bullying, mental health, loneliness, etc… I used to struggle with social anxiety in high school, and when I first watched this movie it genuinely changed the way I thought. Even if they cut some parts from the manga, It turned out beautifully! Thanks for reacting to it!

JoyBoy69

Amazing movie Sub makes it way more impactful and emotional but that's fine

Azmoz

I love this movie, so glad you guys did this reaction. Surely this time I can make it through without crying, right? 🥲

TheMilkMan

Fun fact: in the English dub version, they actually hired a deaf voice actor for Shoko Nishimiya. As much as I love the Japanese sub, I have a huge respect towards the dub for going the extra mile and getting a real deaf person to play a struggling deaf child.

Time to break out the tissues

Ana

I’m hoping for musical the do epic also

Miki - the blond girl - was very much a bully, just like the others, but she was very manipulative trying to pretend to be good/the victim. Another detail that is hard to get on a first watch is that Shoko's mother doesn't know sign language, probably because the father is not around and she is the solo breadwinner. Shoko's way to think about herself is also because she considers herself a burden for her mother and sister.

I'm Batman

So on Crunchroll right beside the rating it says there's suicide so from the time of Shoka trying to off herself till the end of the movie it felt like an anaconda was wrapping around my chest thinking either her or Shoya was gonna off themselves. When I started this movie last night I was a bit worried that the whole movie was gonna be about the bullying but I'm glad that wasn't the case and from early on we see Shoya trying to be better. This movie really got to me, seeing the regret of Shoya and the effect it had on him that he couldn't look people in the eyes, that really speaks to me because I'm the exact same way. The patheticness I see myself as I don't really look people in the face anymore, it's just easier for me to do that rather than anyone see the look in my eyes of defeat and feeling sorry for me. I'm glad Shoya was able to overcome his regret though, that's one of the hardest things anyone can do. And man, this movie had me in tears quite a bit. Think this might be my #1 movie I've seen this year. Last year my #1 was Infinity Castle and now another anime is my #1 again so far. Easily a 5/5 for me!

Mara

I'd LOOOOVE for them to watch EPIC: The Musical!! It's amazing!

Hazzel

Alright, time to cry again

Aleister Crowley

Yeah very much a bystander or like a bully on the side, but as soon as she thought anyone was calling her out she started crying and trying to elicit sympathy. Even with Shoya quietly asking her not to tell people about his past she made sure to cause a scene and tell everyone how he was a bully and she was innocent and a good person.

spishi

it makes me so happy to know you guys really enjoyed this movie as much as i do. this was my sign to those around me that i was not doing good at all mentally and was planning to go through what shoya was going to do in the beginning a few years ago. both the movie and i were brushed off the shoulder and that was my final straw before i landed in the mental ward for a few days right on my 18th birthday. i still fight to see a new day but you guys are honestly ones that get me excited to wake up and watch something along side. after waiting years for you guys to react to this movie, i feel more seen by three strangers on the internet. thank you :,]

Aleister Crowley

I agree Oak, the teacher was very apathetic and then only says something now that admin is involved. could've reprimanded them at any time but he didn't , could've brought her up to the front with him to keep an eye on her, had a parent teacher meeting, etc. Not only that but Nao was offering to take notes for Shouko and she was struggling to take notes for herself/learn which made her resentful of Shouko and turn on her. He could've provided her with copies or just made sure she could learn since she couldn't hear him.

Rena Unnie

They got me the first half, I really thought this would be a bad ending or something lol.

Christian Holler

Thank you for this reaction and the great commentary at the end. When it comes to these darker subject matters, Oak is always the one who really nails it for me. But I really love all of your guys's commentary on this one. I cannot describe how much I love this movie. Reason for that is, that I've been in both situations as our MC has been. I was bullied in grade school pretty extensively for 2 years. To the point i've been thrown to the ground and multiple kids stomped on me. But then, in middle school I became a bully myself for 1-2 years. I get goosebumps every single watch and cry pretty much every time. And I normally don't get that emotinally invested in movies/tv-shows. Movies with heavy subject matters like these are so important, and this is probably the most realistic movie I'll ever watch, and I'm so happy you guys watched it. Again, thank you so much. I know it's kinda parasocial, but it really means something to me.

Artem Dmytrenko

Wow, talking about hard to watch movies, huh?

Cherrie

Amazing reaction! I truly applaud Oak for giving this a five and I think had you watched it in sub instead of dub, it would have been even more impactful and it would have absolutely brought Answer and Mason Quinn to a 5 rating! The problem with dub is that they try to make it more American and that takes away something from the meaning of people's responses and actions. And the translations also take on a different meaning than what they do in the original language. That being said, I'm glad you guys finally watched this. I've been asking for almost 2 years now. I hope you do watch it a second time in sub and pay attention to people's eyes because that's when you get a true meaning behind some of the actions that they take. Especially Shoyo when he's bullying her in the beginning. Anyway, I'm so glad you watched it and your reaction did not disappoint. Amazing guys! Thank you for sharing this episode with us! 🥰

Erlacine

The teacher SUCKED in this. Like bro did not care enough

Hal Perry

Exceptional animated film.

rin

I totally agree with the oak about the teacher being negligent because I lived that exact experience. Teachers knew I was being bullied amongst other kids and it only became an issue when the principal talked to my mom and gathered the teachers. Then suddenly they wanted to be all supportive of me and my health issues the most performative thing ever 😭

Hikka

time for my yearly cry to a silent voice

Dylan Hearts

I can’t thank Oak enough for his thoughtful output in the reactions to heavy subject matter, and always providing the honest examples from his personal life, making the story even more relatable to us, and I really don’t think it’s oversharing with us, complete strangers, on the contrary, it’s the trust in our capacity to understand and accept his life lessons in the right way, it’s not preachy to actually care about people, it’s adult and responsible thing to do. Anyway, thank you, guys for reacting to this movie, I appreciate all your thoughts. This is easily one of my favourites after years watching it for the first time.

Ashley S

No idea what this will be about but looking forward to learning!

Jess

I was thinking the same thing

Jess

I got distracted by the polls but I'm here now and *big breath* I'm ready to rewatch. Will the anime movies also alternate sub and dub? I may have missed this topic in the past so if someone could kindly let me know (kindly please) I would appreciate it.

RyssaVionus

So ecstatic to see this movie show up in my feed; I figured it had to be on your list sooner or later! I was lucky enough to get to see it in theater, and at the end there was this special feature segment (that I was really disappointed to find wasn't on the DVD) where they had an interview with Shoko's voice actress, who really is deaf! So I was really excited to see you decided to do this one dubbed too!

Fee

I hate this movie. And when I say that I mean I hate how much this movie makes me cry 😭😭😭

ShaniaBADDIE4LIFE🤘🐶🐱✨

Wow, this movie, man, had me head-hearting... in a good way, of course, because wow, this brought me back to high school and elementary school. Shouko saying, "I'm sorry, and it's my fault," hit home for me because that's how I feel, and I still am that way as a grown-up, apologizing and saying sorry all the time and just being a nice fucking human being. And the social anxiety is real for me. I get along with everybody, and I'm the sweetest person, and I do what I need to do, but I still feel like people are talking about me, especially when I make mistakes. But when you have something in your life that brings you absolute happiness in this world, don't run from it LIVE. i'll still be that bright, sweet person till the day I die. ❤

ShaniaBADDIE4LIFE🤘🐶🐱✨

I swear to god, every time I react with you guys, I just learn more about myself; every day I open myself up to new things and have me really think outside my head. you guys already know this, but you are fucking awesome. 🥹 🥹

Leif

I loved everyone’s discussion and ofc I knew Oak would have some heartfelt words

Abi

pls watch Grave of the fireflies

Rawaby 1204

Never seen Answer this quiet before ! but i guess the loud quiet in the room was the realest reaction cause that movie will make you watch so focused and almost making you forget to breathe , glad we got to watch this ! Thank you for the reaction

Tania R

Wow. The only anime movie I’ve truly loved before this was Ponyo, but this one… this one destroyed my soul a little, then slowly put it back together again. I think I really liked it. It’s definitely not something I’ll forget easily, although I’m still processing it. Not sure I could put myself through watching it again though 🩷

Andrew

I've been seeing some camera freezing or skipping recently, like in 28:25. Is this just edited because the movie lagged or smth?

Ac7iv3

As a 19yo yound adult, this film resonated with me soo much and felt soo relatable at times. Its kinda insane to remember how much stuff you can remember from grade school if it DOES genuinely stick with you like what oak said cause I really do remember stuff back then clear as day! This film definitely brings insight on young kids going through social problems and even anxiety as what shoko was going through cause I felt the exact same in my years.

Aria Isara

I'm discovering many things with the guys too, these Japanese animated movies have been really good!

Aria Isara

Why do so many teachers suck on so many levels 😭 various people I went to uni with became teachers and I've seen them badmouth and make fun of their pupils (as young as 6 yo) on social media, and other crazy stuff 🤦‍♀️😒

Aria Isara

Kind of a realistic portrayal I'm afraid

rin

I swear the worst ppl you know are teachers or in healthcare

Josh

This may not be an important detail, but Shoya got "the moon" from Shokos confession since the phrase "the moon is beautiful, isn't it?" Is a subtle way to tell someone "I love you".

CeeEl

Whoa. Just found out Robbie Daymond was the voice for Shoya

Evelyn Guerrero

fr I have lost count how many times I have watched it and everysingle time I cry

Jennie

I swear this movie makes me cry every time wtf
