"The Juniper Tree" (also "The Almond Tree"; Low German: Von dem Machandelboom) is a German fairy tale published in Low German by the Brothers Grimm in Grimm's Fairy Tales in 1812. The story contains themes of child abuse, murder, cannibalism, and biblical symbolism and is one of the Brothers Grimm's darker and more mature fairy tales.

Fun fact! The Frankish queen Fredegund is considered to be the prototype for the evil stepmother in French/Germanic fairytales. She tried to kill her own daughter, Rigunth, by telling her to pick some jewelry out of a chest and then slamming the lid down, similar to the way the boy was murdered in The Juniper Tree, except without the actual murder and cannibalism that followed.

What I learned from this story is that stepparents should be good to their stepchildren *coughHeathcough*

The suffix "-chen" is the German diminutive. It's the equivalent of calling someone named Michael "Mikey". But that still means that her given name would be "Marlin". So, named after a fish I guess?
