"The Ambergris Element" Full Reaction! - Star Trek: The Animated Series Season 1

Skyman's Follies

Bunny, hope your earache clears up soon! For me, I really loved this episode. The artwork is outstanding - not only all the great environments, but also the shots of the Enterprise - seemed darker and moodier - really cool. Love the idea of Trek moving to the underwater environments. Loved the message - although wish we could have seen the young ones enter the story - a casualty of the short episode length. Anyway, big thumbs up from me : )

I think this is the first TAS where I disagree with Bunny some. I really enjoy this episode, more then she did. Yes, a lot of it did feel rushed and not everything was properly explained, a hour would have been SO much better and I'm glad every other ST is that length. However, the animation was indeed gorgeous and I like the overall message. Agree with everything Skyman said also, great points. I have to assume the Enterprise was assigned special craft to be able to cruise and dive on ocean, cause shuttlecraft just can't do that. :) Very cool idea and concept, though. Lands sinking below the waves is a common and ancient idea, going all the way back to Atlantis. We've seen it a lot in fiction also, such as Waterworld. It's also the main idea behind a overlooked Playstation RPG I enjoy called The Grandstream Saga. And yes, I could see people getting violent and desperate in the wake of disasters happening, where they try to attack others in just blind fear and rage. McCoy said that Kirk needed three injections total to reverse the mutation, two small ones and one large one, and we only saw two of them. So it looks like it panned out, and that it worked on Spock despite his Vulcan body. However, the fact that they showed Kirk's hands webbed again when they already reverted was an animation error. Without spoiling anything, I'll just say that something else in Star Trek your going to watch deals heavily with the idea of the 'older' current generation in power being at odds, and having to live with things, with the 'younger' generation. It's a idea ST revisits several times.

Good episode. I didn't think that Kirk and Spock wouldn't have to spend all their time in a tank. As depicted at the end with the Aquarians on the bridge with environmental helmets.

Oh wait, nevermind... It's a Witcher necklace. It's been a few years since I've played The Witcher

The young Aquan woman spoke of the ancient air-breathers using "surgo-op" to make changes to their bodies that allowed them to breathe underwater, and that, as centuries passed, the mutations became hereditary. (Not unlike how the Terratins' miniaturization became their norm, and thus was irreversible.) So it was a forced mutation, which was needed to survive the sudden submerging of their land masses, and not a natural one, which would presumably have taken many, many years. My main issue with this episode is the inconsistency of the Aquans' attitude toward Kirk and Spock. At first, the High Tribune tells them that "we do not wish to kill, even air-breathers," but moments later condemns them to death by trapping them on the surface. I understand the need for drama/peril, but the way it's handled seems sloppy to me. Another issue is the timing of the Aquans' battle with air-breathers. One of the tribunes says the ancient records warned of air-breather spies, which suggests that it's been quite some time since they'd encountered air-breathers. A few extra lines of dialogue could have cleared this up. But all in all, I enjoyed this one.

A good episode but some of the exposition is a bit rushed and clumsy, which is probably what brought you down a bit Bunny. The art is beautiful and the animation is a notch above the usual. Top notch episode visually. Another great concept that would probably have worked better with more running time. I feel for you with the ear infection. I’ve had a few.they suck. Get better soon!

Bunnytails needs to feel better! Ear infections are awful! I won’t criticize her reaction to this ep because of her really insightful reactions to some TOS and TAS eps that made me think And I’ve been immersed in Trek since the mid 70’s!

Trilogian

Also, another ep that’s bigger than 20 mins!

Yup it’s from the Witcher. It’s also been a long time since I’ve played it. I’m looking forward to the fourth entry 😁

I thought we did see some of the young ones toward the end. Hmm. I guess this one just wasn’t clear to me during a lot of points.

Skyman's Follies

OR I missed them :) Probably I missed them. I’ll have to rewatch
