"Bem" Full Reaction! - Star Trek: The Animated Series Season 2

Comments

Greg

A very interesting and unique episode. I actually felt this one plodded in a few spots (which is weird to say for a half hour long animated show!) but it has some really amazing concepts and fun ideas here. David Gerrold wrote the script for this one. He had written the previous TAS episode "More Tribbles, More Troubles" and worked on several Original Series episodes. This is yet another episode that was original suggested for a third season TOS episode, planned for the first season of TAS, and finally got aired in the second. We get to see a new race, a 'colony' creature as it was, who can actually split himself up. Really interesting and a totally new take on a alien life form we've not seen before. The idea of an advanced alien being using this planet as it's own laboratory and studying what was happening here is also very interesting. One could argue the creature should not be doing so and should let he native lizard race develop on their own, but who is going to tell a powerful alien being what it can and can't do? I had forgotten this was the first time that we learn Kirk's middle name (I thought it was first said in one of the movies). Not sure why they included it here. We already knew his middle initial was T, I guess one of the writers felt giving him the name of a famous Roman emperor for his middle name fit his personality and character. Animation is again put to good effect here, and it was fun to see Uhura issuing orders again on the bridge and doing actions.

I really liked the humorous banter in this episode. It felt like a callback to Gerrold's first scripted episode, "The Trouble with Tribbles." As the show was devoid of humor for the entire third season of TOS, its inclusion here gives this episode some real season two vibes, and I'm here for it. As a result of Uhura being left in command (another major highlight of the episode), I think this might be the only instance in which we see her and M'Ress on the bridge at the same time. Please correct me if I'm wrong.

I remember hearing that BEM is an abbreviation for the term "bug-eyed monster", meaning when writing science fiction be sure to include one to get more readers. I guess Sulu's watch was later but it seems like the Enterprise bridge crew is being downsized. A tantalizing shot of Uhura running the ship standing next to the Captain's chair; I wanted her to sit in the command seat but the camera angle was problematic. Sort of like Basic Instinct! Oh well ❤️‍🩹

BEM might be my least favorite TAS episode, but once again Bunnytails has made me see it in a different way. She often demonstrates the Vulcan IDIC philosophy: Infinite Diversity Infinite Combination. 🖖

I liked this episode a lot, not sure why, though... but I think it has to do with the dialogue and for that, gotta thank David Gerrold. Bem's a fun character and the whole thing with having Kirk and Spock beam over water just so he could steal their equipment was well-done, especially so given the limited animation. One fun note on Kirk's middle name: in Kirk's very first episode "Where No Man Has Gone Before", as Gary Mitchell plans for his death in the finale, Kirk's tombstone reads: “James R. Kirk” .... I guess it took them a minute to settle on the "T" ; )

Fucking for fucks sake are you cute Bunny. Ahem. That’s all I will say about that. Anyway “bem” is a play on B.E.M. as in bug eyed monster, which is exactly what Rotenberry was trying to avoid when he set out to create Star Trek. The cliché, alien monster. Bem,,, is NOT a B. E.M. It’s a little meta

so few episodes in season 2... (sad pikachu face) GAH! what's up with your hair today Bunny!!! (not my business)

Carlos Stevens

Yes, Uhura is next in line for command after Spock, Scotty, and Sulu.

Carlos Stevens

ummm.. For the record Bunny... Your hair is cute. Unexpected... Astonishing.. but yeah... cute.

If you would dye that wig purple, you could pass for one of the crew women on the moonbase in the series UFO.

bunnytails

Haha thanks :D And interesting note about B.E.M.

bunnytails

Ooh, really? What about it do you not like?

bunnytails

Huh. I never even really noticed the lack of comedy episodes in season 3. Maybe that's why I enjoyed them so much in TAS.

Lee

I mean, some people interpret "Spock's Brain" as a comedy episode, but it certainly wasn't the new producer's intention.

Trilogian

I guess I dislike the “modular” aspects of Bem. It was hard to take him seriously. Seeing it again let me enjoy the stuff that worked still works for me and it’s better than I remember!
