Regarding your question about the Romulan ships - in TOS "The Enterprise Incident" we see Romulans using the Klingon design for the first time. There's dialog in the episode that mentions it. Behind the scenes the Romulan Bird of Prey model was destroyed by the creator (Wah Ming Chang) because TOS crew used it in "Balance of Terror" and returned it to him without paying for it. That's the only time it showed up in TOS. So when they needed Romulan ships again for "The Enterprise Incident" they just used the Klingon D-7 model and invented fiction about the Romulans using Klingon designs. In TAS they use the Klingon model for both Klingon and Romulan ships, but they mark them differently. The Klingon ships have the Klingon Empire symbol and the letters that resemble 7CS on them. The Romulan ships have yellow and red Bird of Prey symbols on them. In the TOS Remastered version of "The Enterprise Incident" one of the three Romulan ships was replaced with the original Bird of Prey model and the two that are still Klingon models have the Bird of Prey painted on their underside. Hope that helps!

THIS... was a FANTASTIC episode on two fronts: firstly, as an animated episode: GREAT visuals ("star gate tunnel, anti-gravity off, and ESPECIALLY introduction of the "holodeck", great humor, and a plot that just kept moving at brisk pace. Secondly, imho, this idea was finally a new addition to either TAS or TOS: "Enterprise crew is "attacked" by... the Enterprise!" It's just a great idea that hadn't really been explored yet and I think "The Practical Joker", more than any other TAS episode to date, could really have been a terrific TOS episode (as a more humorous episode ala Tribbles, I Mudd, Piece of the Action). I really would've LOVED to see this as live action. Would've been great fun. Lastly, Bunny, I really hope you get to a "nice weather" beach (So Cal, Mexico, Hawaii, etc...) I think your "forest/beach" ratio will change to at least 50/50 ; ) Thanks for the great reaction...

This is a fun episode, and I agree it's a really strong one and rather unique. Just how the programming of the computer got so badly damaged I don't know, but we got to see parts of the ship such as the mess hall we don't often see. And just where did that giant balloon version of the Enterprise come from anyway? LOL So Bunny, you were correct about the practical reason as to why they had to use Romulans in Klingon ships from TOS. But to explain it they also came up with a lore reason -- a short term alliance between the Klingons and Romulans, in which the Klingons got the cloaking device and the Romulans got a number of Klingon D7 Class Battleruisers which they refitted. The writer and director decided to keep this going for the sake of the story and for keeping it consistent with what we saw in TOS. I had totally forgotten about the Rec Room in this episode! This is really an early version of the Holodeck, which we see a LOT of in later ST shows. The Rec Room here is more limited -- it uses tapes for the programs so it only has several on hand it sound like, and from what McCoy and the others said, walk far enough and you'd hit a wall. Still, i have to imagine the writers of Next Generation looked at this and went 'hum, this is a great idea!' and took it as their own. Also totally agree that everyone here did great voice work, even William Shatner with that 'I'm scared!' impression. Once again, the writers here had experience with Star Trek -- writers Chuck Menville and Len Janson, who together also wrote the first season episode "Once Upon a Planet".

Practical jokes are my second lowest form of humor, after puns, but here at least they're persistent, so l can't help being amused. Laughing is a difficult thing for actors to do convincingly. Bunny says Takei's is the best; I thought Doohan's scene was great too. Another story where computers have it out for Kirk, e.g. Nomad, M-5, Landrue, I Mudd... and turn the tables on him, like the Platonians. If the Holodeck could take me anywhere I'd go to Yosemite, like Kirk in one of the movies.

Greg

She's seen some TNG and some movies so she knows about the Holodecks.

Another fun episode. I’ve always been a fan of TAS, but I agree a lot of these are even better than I remember. Bunny the only proper way to experience the beach IMO is at a resort, under a nice shady cabana, with waiters and waitresses refreshing the tropical beverage of choice on demand. :)

Hard to say where the Enterprise rec room could take me, though Austria in summer might work! Watching these eps again gives me more appreciation, especially the ones I was worried Bunnytails wouldn’t like, but she always surprises. There was an old Trek miniature tabletop game that included the Romulan/Klingon D-7! It had a beautiful set of blue Romulan wings painted on the top, and it was called a Stormbird!

bunnytails

I would love to see the miniatures for that! Do you recall what the game was called?

bunnytails

I knew it! I've been doing the beach wrong my whole life!

bunnytails

I do remember why they stopped using them in TOS but I guess I was just hoping they would revert back to the original Romulan ship designs since they no longer had to rely on the physical model anymore :(

bunnytails

I will do my best to get to a nice weather beach one of these days!

Trilogian

The game was called The Starship Tactical Combat Simulator made by a company called FASA. It had lots of great miniatures! There’s a good reference site for the game, but it might contain spoilers for future Treks. An image search for Romulan Stormbird gave me several great versions of the blue wings!

Whoa. Holodeck (reck room) introduction in TAS. Didn't see that coming (don't remember it either, considering I don't' know if I've seen all these or not). It also answers some questions I had about Canon going forward. That for a later discussion.

NateWiz

In the FASA star trek rpg it explains the ships come from a Romulan/ Klingon trade agreement, ships for cloaking devices.

Bunny take a trip to San Diego like La Hoya for a good beach in CA
