This video explains the Rebuild of Evangelion ending pretty well if you're still confused hehe: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4F4rlafkbyA Also the part with Asuka transforming was because of her getting nearly fully corrupted in 2.22. But she resisted its completion and survived by sheer will alone. By unsealing her eye-patch in the ending, she was unlocking the 2.22 corruption angel she had sealed away for years in order to fully transform herself...😿 But the lore is still too much to keep track of and process for someone like me, so I'm just happy that Utada Hikaru made One Last Kiss such a great new song for the final ending of Evangelion and hope she can make a song just as good for Kingdom Hearts 4! 😻

Awesome seeing your reactions to the final film! Happy your overall takeaway was positive too despite the confusing story layers lol. I mainly just voted Eva 2.22 all those months because it's where the Rebuild movies start a significant detour from the og plotline you'd seen years ago... And because you enjoyed Xenogears, and Eva has similar mecha vs "god" & psychological themes~ More deeply understanding the plot of Eva (both the remake films & og) has "layers" let's just say lol... There's the "literal in-universe plot" layer which many fans have obsessed over understanding more due to it being presented more as a mysterious puzzle to unlock with clues just hinted throughout the narrative that can be noticed more each time watching. Eva franchise creator Hideaki Anno has stated "there will never be an official 'manual' explaining Evangelion" so I'd guess his intention with how the story is presented might be to just let viewers decide their own personal meaning of the plot however it makes most sense to them based on clues they notice. There are of course major fan theories based on the "clues" that have become the main predominant plot explanations over the years. Also, a huge help to filling in "missing holes" in the Eva universe's backstory lore were actually found by reading a series of "classified files" unlockable in-game of a 2003 ps2/psp rpg "Neon Genesis Evangelion 2" where Hideaki Anno was interviewed extensively by the game's dev team in order to get their lore straight for making the jRPG's story. (So most of this "knowledge" about the Eva universe's backstory lore comes from a ps2 game's unlockable files, not even by watching the anime itself lol) Info from these files is compiled on pages in the Evageeks wiki, and many "Eva explained" youtube vids reference this "Eva universe backstory lore" in their explanation videos. Of course for anything that came after the 2003 jRPG such as the 2007-2021 Rebuild movie series, understanding the in-universe plot is still just by clues, theories, personal subjective interpretations, etc. only lol. Oh and some fans have even used the manga adaptation which was produced in parallel to the og anime for "companion content" as a source to fill-in plot unclear or unrevealed in the anime XD Hence why there's an abundance of videos explaining og Eva's world lore in 20 minutes like this one below (but not many youtubers brave to explain 2021's Rebuild ending concretely without a more authoritative guidebook like those rpg lore files provided, thus assuming much more guesswork for Rebuild's new lore) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5gVDDpviKo

However, in-universe plot isn't the end-all-be-all for stories especially in the case of Eva. Often the reason for stories themselves are the lessons, morals, or msg the author wants the audience to know aside from just to be entertained. So there's the "emotional/character dev" layer of the plot which is much easier to relate to even without understanding the full lore details of the plot. (Which is why whatever feelings or meaning you get from your own personal interpretation of watching it is the most valid understanding of it for your own self which can also change/evolve upon rewatch ;) This is connected to the "meta/metaphoric/symbolism" layer of the plot ie what is the author trying to tell the audience beyond just the literal plot itself? There are many theories here... But to better understand them, some background info ought help first: Hideaki Anno made the og Eva anime in the 90s when Japan was in an economic depression. (He had clinical depression as well, and this could be seen in the themes present in og Eva which resonated with many viewers at the time of somewhat economic/future uncertainty as Eva became huge in Japan) The final 2 tv episodes 25 & 26 didn't give fans a proper in-universe plot conclusion and instead focused on character development, analysis, growth & self-acceptance which I guess to him seemed to be the main point of the show anyway and the only conclusion he felt that mattered also given how the studio was running outta cash going bankrupt. While nowadays many fans praise or at least accept the og tv ending's choice, back then many fans became confused & furious that the in-universe plot never got proper conclusion and went as far with their rage to send him hatemail/deaththreats. So when the studio finally got enough financial returns from the tv anime to budget making End of Evangelion, it was a somewhat bittersweet in-universe plot conclusion delivered to the fans who demanded it while a still borderline clinical-depression movie director worked-in some more controversial or ridiculous parts of the film as a subtle trolling "middle finger" to those fans who didn't understand the point of his original tv series ending by being unnecessarily over the top on in-universe movie ending plot which he may have deemed ultimately inconsequential to understanding the characters' resolutions that the tv ending had provided.

Flash-forward to the Rebuild of Eva movies in 2007, 2009, & 2012 with a now more successful, wealthier, and much less depressed Hideaki Anno... it then took 9 more years until the finale film Eva 3.0+1.0 released in 2021 (He and of course any remaining longtime Eva fans have been with Eva for as much as over a quarter-century by then)... So one major fan theory about a "meta" message within Eva 3.0+1.0's ending is a theme of "CLOSURE on being stuck within unhelpful mindset/behavioral loops/patterns of immaturity in order to get moving on with actually LIVING LIFE" Evidence for this could be all main characters getting more mature development/closure than any prior endings, the eva pilots being trapped in their 14yr old bodies as long as they immerse themselves in the orange LCL fluid filled entryplug cockpits of their evas, them destroying all Evangelions at the ending, even the movie poster's tagline "Goodbye Evangelion" etc. Not just for the in-universe characters' development & closure, but for Hideaki Anno having worked on the Eva franchise so long & for fans who obsessed and followed it all those years (For their own closure on Eva, and moving on from obsessing over its world & lore or possibly even escapism entertainment in general to start anew chapter focusing on facing & living life that actually matters)... Evidence for this symbolism could be when the mass numbers of floating white Evangelion copies vanish by getting "farewelled" at the very end, the "souls" within them revert to the forms of living things like people and animals... So could this imply that the human souls trapped within these giant floating white Eva-unit forms were the souls of fans who trapped themselves within their own obsession for more lore/content of fictional escapism stories "entryplug womb" holding them back from more fully living their own lives outside the fandoms?? (If so, it's one hell of a META Layer to *layer* into the plot and the ending lolol!) I mean even the final scene when Shinji & Mari run outside the train station is actual irl drone footage of Hideaki Anno's hometown in Japan in 2021 not anime or computer visuals! (implying that the characters finally "grew up" enough to face living life in the REAL World without *needing* to endlessly immerse themselves in their fictional "worlds" like Evangelion to feel whole?) :D

This is the video proposing that META Plot Layer theory of the Evangelion/Rebuild series which my own interpretations got inspired by https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHIvs0Q-uKI Highly recommended if you ever got any time to watch some Evangelion analysis youtube! XD

O.T.O.H. What if all the plot's confusing layers of lore elements/imagery/naming/symbolism were all just Hideaki Anno grabbing terms from biblical mythos & psychoanalytical theory simply because he assumed that by borrowing & incorporating "big ideas" from past biblical myths & psychology theories, he could actually just "shortcut" everyone's understanding of the themes he wanted to convey to the audience regarding character journey development he mainly cared about quicker and more clearly if the audience already had some familiarity with those terms? Which would be ironic considering how deep into the in-universe lore many fans became rather lol. For example when asking "what are Eva units" ...Eva units are described as "copies" of adam (or adamS since there are a handful in the updated Rebuild lore) with a human soul merged inside it such as Shinji's Eva etc. The naming for this came from The Bible where EVA (EVE) was created by taking a "piece" of Adam (his rib) while having a soul of her own (and of course a womb for a children of the human race she'll protect) Lore resources like https://wiki.evageeks.org have endless pages explaining every major term ever mentioned in the fictional world of Evangelion like Angel, Evangelion, Seele, Impact, Spear of Longinus, Cassius, Lilins, etc... Tho hopefully clarifying basic understanding of such terms only eases the ability to better understand/relate about the series biggest focus on characters & meanings instead of becoming a rabbit hole of each wiki page linking page after page of lore terms to explain deeper details lol... Perhaps it's a similar case of the main core messages being simple important ones but which get harder to notice with all the other highly detailed yet passionate self-expression going on... (Oh the curse of information overload when expressing one's self flooding alongside their main point! Can't we all relate to it on some level?? LOLol~ X')
