So annoying you were spoiled

Christopher Lamont Harris

You saw Gates McFadden name before you could actually see her but I'm glad you're happy

Joshua Langweil

Sorry you were spoiled. Was looking forward to your reaction of the opening credits. Try not get to spoiled on anything at ST:LV!

Greg

I was really worried that Bunny was going to be spoiled about Crusher returning. It was a LONG time to keep that secret. I help mod her YT channel and I do everything I can, but the comments are so frequent and heavy that things slip through despite our best efforts. Although, let me address everyone HERE -- I an 99 percent sure that the comment that tipped Bunny off that Crusher returned was made by someone HERE and NOT on YT. I can recall the comment clearly. So, PLEASE, be mindful about what you say! Anyway, on to more positive news -- Welcome to Season 3! Not as many changes happening here as the past season, but I'll touch on the major ones.... 1) Gates McFaddden returning of course. This was in large part thanks to the new executive role that Berman and Piller had with the show starting this season -- those two would be at the helm of Star Trek for a long time to come. Season 3 aired during 1989-1990, and while Gene was still involved, he was totally in a back seat role by now as his health declined (he would pass away in 1991). McFadden was convinced to return now that new people were in charge, and the actors really wanted her back also. 2) The first appearance of the new Starfleet uniforms; several cast members had complained about the previous spandex uniforms which led to their replacement with the new Mandarin-collared two-piece wool uniforms. In an appearance on The Arsenio Hall Show shortly before the episode aired, Patrick Stewart simply said, "The new uniforms don't hurt". 3) New opening, as Bunny noticed, and an increase in the budget as the show has really gotten popular. 4) The Writers Strike FINALLY is finished, so it's all hands on deck with a full length season, really well written and directed episodes, etc. As for the episode itself? I always really liked this one, and I think it's a better opener to a season then the Season 2 was. Yes, it does re-tread some ideas, but it does them in a good way, with an interesting plot and everyone was involved in the cast in some way in this episode. Wes was front and center as the writers continued to try to write better episodes for him, and Dr. Stubbs and that whole side plot was really good. I don't agree with what the doctor did, but I understand him -- this is his life's work, his passion, what he's spent years for, and to have that ripped away from him at the moment it's supposed to happen...I'd be super frustrated and angry also. He was played by Ken Jenkins, who I really liked when he had the lead role on the TV show Scrubbs, and he had numerous other guest spots as well. Really good actor. Finally, a side note about Baseball. It's already been mentioned in a past ST episode that Baseball really isn't a spot that anyone watches or plays anymore, and that's just reinforced in this one. And there's some truth to what the Doctor was saying about how it fell from it's old position as 'America's Game' as people demanded faster games with more involvement. Baseball isn't anywhere near as popular as it used to be, although I don't see it dying out like it does in Star Trek. A number of rule changes have been made by MLB in recent years to try to speed up the pace of the games some (pitch clock on pitchers, for example) to help to increase interest, and it seems like it's working.

Fun facts! Not too many fun facts for this episode. You noticed the change in the opening credits. Obviously some big dummy spoiled Dr Crushers return. I don't know what kind of careless thought thst guy had to post it, but I'm sure he regrets it immensely... 😓 Stubbs is the actor that plays Dr Kelso in Scrubs. Harder to notice, but they're wearing new non-spandex uniforms which some of the actors complained hurt their backs in the previous seasons.

Trish

Also rodeberry forced out like season2 original series

Bruce Bromley

Such a bummer to hear that you were spoiled on Crusher's return. I hope you gave those responsible a damn good thrashing. In this episode, I do wish they had a passing back of the baton between Pulaski and Crusher. The change was fast enough to give one whiplash. I think Diana Muldaur would have left with or without McFadden returning, I think she was tired of the bit of BTS drama going on with Season Two. She has said that she enjoyed her time more on her episodes of TOS than her time on TNG.

Alexandre Santos

Diana Muldaur left, and they didnt want the 3rd doctor in 3 season, so they brough back McFadden, since the big reason she left was also out.

Alexandre Santos

Big shame this happened, I was looking forward to this episode since 1st episode of season 2 when you felt so much her departure, anyway I enjoy your reaction as always.

Desmond

Another thing worth mentioning is Michael Piller joining (and indeed leading) the writers room. He actually is credited on the teleplay on this one too. He made quite a few changes that will be notable from here on.

Mark

No spoilers here, I remember a producer saying at this time they were still finishing the scripts for the third season, and they were short on stories, hence Rikers trip down memory lane and this rehashing of a 1st season storyline but they were able to chamge the look of the show ( the bridge) and (the uniforms), thank God they got collars now and no more woodgrain panels and Crusher and Data sit closer together

Muggy

The comments are constantly full of spoilers from the morons. Why is she even allowed to read the comments at all? I'm quitting the channel.

Desmond

Home Soil was the "ugly bags of mostly water" episode lol. And yes, this is a very typical Trek plot with something that isn't thought to be alive, but actually is alive (and intelligent), so they must try to communicate with it and protect it. Not the most original plot, but pretty well executed, IMO. I'm not the biggest fan of Wesley, but given the return of his mother in this episode, it was appropriate that we got some Crusher screen time, just to check in with them and how their relationship has changed. I'm really sorry that the return of Crusher was spoiled for you, Bunny. I was actually looking forward to your reaction, given how strongly you responded to her in season 1. Hopefully we can avoid spoilers from here on out!

Carlos Stevens

Uh oh... Bunny's giving us a "talkin' to." Why can't ya'll fools learn to KEEP YOUR MOUTHS SHUT (directed at those of you who can't SHUT IT!).

Carlos Stevens

Bunny, this was the year when they perfected CGI for TV. That season 3 opener was off the chain when I saw it for the first time back in the day.

TJ

That's so ridiculous that commentors are spoiling future episodes. Sorry to hear that... Yes, this was definitely a redress of Home Soil, so not much creativity with this episode. I really think it was designed to showcase the Beverley-Wesley dynamic now that he's a year older and becoming a young man. Not the greatest start to Season 3, but good enough... Onward!

Jack

It is unfortunate that the Crusher return was spoiled. It's best when everyone works together to prevent that sort of thing. By the same token, though, there's only so much that can be done in that regard -- season 3 premiered in 1989, so we are talking about "spoilers" for a 37 year old show. Stuff is well and truly out there, and for a very, very long time. Dismaying, but not surprising, and not the end of the world. I, for one, believe the show is strong enough to stand tall and be thoroughly enjoyable even if some things are spoiled. I guess it's a matter of perspective. As for the episode, wow, were the new uniforms ever a welcome improvement! Less pinchy, less revealing (hello, everyone's nipples), and way easier to keep clean. Plus they're a bit more forgiving -- the cast could actually enjoy a dessert once in a while without worrying they'll bust out of their unitard! It's always fun to see Dr. Kelso. (If you've never watched "Scrubs," it's definitely worth adding to your queue. I normally hate sitcoms, but Scrubs is in a league of its own.)

William Terry

Didn't bunny see Crusher in First Contact? The episode Evolution is less about Dr Crusher's run-of-the-mill lateral career move and more strange Wesley actions, from hiding dangerous science research to answering his superior officer with "yeah, what?". Why do they continue to treat him like he's five? It's very good to see McFadden returned, from her smokin' good looks to her seemingly being the only cast member with comic timing to match Stewart.

Matthew Graves (Graviton)

Well, poop. Ok, yeah, I was very much looking forward to your reaction. Instead of dwelling on the negative I'll just say that I MASSIVELY appreciate your honesty and that you don't try to "fake it". That's absolutely the right choice. I can't stress that enough. Shit happens, but I'm deeply grateful that you persevere and give us your honest reactions. Here's a totally non-spoilery bit of sunshine: I think I've gotten to know something of your taste in stories by this point and I’m certain there is plenty in Season 3 that you are going to absolutely love! :) As for this episode, it's not one of my favorites. First, there's Dr. Stubbs. Now, it's legitimatee to have unlikable characters for the sake of telling a story. But Stubbs is just aggravating to watch, and the payoff is kinda weak. As you suggested, I think the payoff is supposed to be him learning some humility or gaining some new insight, but it's rushed through, and it doesn't really land effectively IMO. I also don't think the story was really structured that well. The crew leaps to the idea that the nanites are sapient too quickly and without good reason. The fact that they are proven right just exacerbates the contrivance of it all. The stuff with Wesley, Bev, and Guinan is much better. and is by far the stronger part of the episode, to the point where I kinda wish we had gotten more in depth with that and maybe made the whole bit with Stubbs and the nanites an even smaller part of the episode. If the Nanites are the A plot and the Crushers the B plot, I think the episode would have been better served by flipping those two in this case. Just a thought. And finally, yeah, I agree... Bev's hair is gorgeous here. :) The thing is, Gates started wearing a wig in Season 3. Apparently, she wanted to keep the long hair she grew out in her time off, but it was felt that the character of Doctor Crusher would want a shorter, more convenient style. Such is life in Hollywood. As an experienced cosplayer, I'm sure you can appreciate the magic of a well done wig Bunny, even when your own natural hair is gorgeous and luxuriant! ;)

Greg

I asked her that very question months ago (First Contact) and she said she didn't honestly remember anyone being in the movie. As for Wes, your comments are something that's been talked about before here -- the writers never really seemed to know what to do with him. As Gene's influence on the show got less and less, his 'pet project' was left with a very negative backlash from a lot of fans, and it seemed they were grasping at straws to figure out how to adapt. Poor Will took a lot of personal abuse for the character also, which I really hate as he's a good actor and none of this is his fault.

bunnytails

Allowed? I run all my channels by myself.

Philip

Hi, Bunny. I didn't dislike Dr. Pulaski's character, but I was both surprised and pleased when I saw the opening credits back when the episode first aired to see that Gates had returned. I would purposely avoid reading news articles or TV Guide season previews for the same reason you dislike spoilers: I don't want things spoiled. And I wasn't doing reaction videos so your concern is even greater. I'm sorry that your reaction to Gates' return couldn't have been a pleasant surprise while watching the episode instead of it being spoiled for you. I do hope that doesn't dissuade you from reading our comments though. I only wish there was an easy way for those of us who do honor your wishes to alert you without you having to actually read something that needs deleting. The baseball game that Dr. Stubbs is reliving in his quarters before the nanites attack him is the National League pennant-winning game of the 1951 tie-breaking series between the Brooklyn Dodgers and the New York Giants. Stubbs is describing the game situation just before Dodgers pitcher Ralph Branca serves up a 9th inning three-run walk off home run to Giants slugger Bobby Thomson. The win completed the Giants' miraculous comeback from mid-August that saw them over 13 games behind Brooklyn at the time. (Yes, Dodger fans, I am aware of the sign-stealing scandal.) As the disappointed Dodgers trudged off to the clubhouse at the Polo Grounds, located beyond the center field wall, there was no mistaking Branca. His uniform number was 13. Thomson home run was called "The Shot Heard 'Round the World." And that was no misnomer. The game was broadcast live over the Armed Forces Radio Network. U.S. military service personnel all around the world, including those serving in the Korea War, heard the game. There was even a M*A*S*H episode that parodied the unit listening to the game.

Philip

Bunny isn't alone. Although I am familiar with "Frankenstein, " I never read the book or saw the movie either.

Philip

I never understood the negativity towards Wesley's character back then, either.

Mark Gosine

I enjoyed watching along. However, let me grouse a minute about YouTube changes. New terms prevent pic-in-pic unless you have premium now! No watching along on phone or pad! At least I can with my laptop and the browser. A pox both on Spoilers, and YouTube TOS!

Mark Gosine

Oh, and it's not Frankenstein. It's Fraahnkensteen!

William Terry

To reiterate, it gets better, and Wesley has some good episodes coming.

bunnytails

I did ban that person from the YouTube comments.

bunnytails

I am glad you were still able to enjoy!

bunnytails

I just wanted to let you know that I have put additional measures in place to not be spoiled. I will be surprised if we have any further issues.

bunnytails

I have a good feeling that spoilers will be less of an issue from here on out

bunnytails

Yeah, people were praising season 3 so furiously and then it opens with... this episode. Not bad, but not living up to the hype. Thankfully I've seen some really great episodes in S3 so far.

bunnytails

I only remember a few things about First Contact so I would like the comments to go forward as if I haven't seen it. I didn't remember her being in that movie.

bunnytails

I am sorry that commenter robbed us all of what would have been a much different reaction had he just kept quiet. :(

bunnytails

I will have to pull back from comments from now on, but I will always read Patreon comments because everyone here is very well bahaved.

bunnytails

I think you have to vigorously roll the 'R' as well. At least, I'd like to think so.

bunnytails

YouTube changed the layout of creator dashboards as well. I hate it.

Summer

Not you Bunny, these people
