Cant wait for season 2

The scene with Bjorn is so so good... Bjorn knew Askeladd for decades. Despite knowing next to nothing about him despite all that time, he could still tell who Askeladd is at his core. Rejecting everything, hating everyone, even yourself... A great detail in the scene is Bjorn's final action in life. Recall Ragnar, who after telling Askeladd the truth about the royal court, reached for his blade in death to reach valhalla, even while thinking about Canute. Bjorn, on the other hand, dueled Askeladd specifically to enter valhalla, yet chose to clutch unto Askeladd instead of his weapon. In his final moments, he finally managed to disregard his viking spirit and found ease through a human connection. The show parallels Ragnar a lot through many different characters and moments, such as the priest or Canute himself, yet it's this one that I always find most interesting. Yukimura seems to have gone out of his way to depict Ragnar's character as an overall negative one, despite his loving deeds. I think, and this is just speculation, that Ragnar embodies the kind of love that Yukimura finds to be old-fashioned, rooted in discrimination and leading to strife all around the world. This is why he's depicted as yearning for Valhalla, as he still embodies this outdated way of thinking. Characters who transcend past this simple discriminatory love get shown in a more positive light, most notably Thors, but also of course Bjorn in this scene. It's hard to say, but if he weren't dying there and then, maybe he would let go of his viking ways after hearing Askeladd's confession. Then again, maybe it's precisely because of the fact he's dying that he's able to come to such a conclusion. After all, death perfects a person... Circling back to the rest of the episode, the only thing more impressive than Askeladd cooking up that crazy plan of his, is Yukimura managing to weave the arcs of so many characters throughout it all. Even just the reunion between Leif and Thorfinn occurring when he kills that assassin, it's just such a striking visual. Leif must have imagined the moment so many times, played it out in his head time and again. He'd have dreamed many times the way he'd approach Thorfinn, talk to him, hug him. Yet, none of it happened that way. Instead, he witnessed first hand Thorfinn's inhumanity. No dialogue at all required to cement the emotional beat there. Just stellar planning by the author. And yet, we do get a couple of lines of dialogue. "It can't be enough," he says. "It won't ever be enough." And maybe that's the case. After all, he's lived his life this way for over 10 years, I can't imagine a one minute talk would shake that resolve. Yet, we as outside observers know Thorfinn's existence barely qualifies as a lived life at all. All he's done is acquired a name for himself through his killing and fighting - the exact opposite of what his father wanted. It's no exaggeration that the moment he got his new moniker, "Thorfinn Karlsefni," he got as far away from a true warrior as one could reasonably be. Short fun fact btw, "Karlsefni" roughly translates to something along the lines of "real man," and is the nickname the real Thorfinn Thorsson gained throughout his life. Obviously don't look him up, as there'll be major spoilers in that wikipedia article lol. Sorry for the long comments, but there is just so much depth in these episodes that it would be a shame not to delve into it. Even now, I've had to contain myself lest I spoil something from future seasons. The next ep is my second favorite one of the season, I'm looking forward to it!

I was vaguely worried during Bjorn's death scene that Askeladd was going to say something snarky, and then he said something so touching that I immediately dissolved into tears. T_T I got too excited and got ahead of you, so I'm finished with season 1 and I can't wait to hear your analysis on the upcoming episodes!

Adam

The weird sequence of Canute seemingly having a conversation then the double being shot throws me off as well. Minor flaw in directing? Oh well

Adam

One of my favorite scenes in the whole show, Bjorn’s duel! He is loyal, but still often questioning Askeladd. Not out of doubt, only looking for understanding.

charlie

no matter how many times I watch this scene it confuses me lol

Lama Mama

🚬😎 Rest in piss Bjorn. You will not be missed. 🪦

Jonas

it's supposed to confuse you, it's not a directing flaw, it is an intentional directing decision. The purpose is to put you in the same state of confusion that everybody is feeling there. Now you can question the logistics of how the switch happened but even that can easily be explained

Tay

uhhhhh....

Lama Mama

he's a bad hombre
