I think in Hohenhiem's case, his "sacrifice" was his people (6:20)

Pedro D. G.

I can only think of 3 other people in the show who could pull off using your own life as a single soul philosopher stone and 1 of them might not be able to do the same and that's Marcoh, the other 2 have lived for Hundreds of Years, Ed is a genius by all means, the amount of knowledge in all areas he has since he was just a child is insane. I don't remember if we talked about it during the show or not but Alchemists are bound by their knowledge about the things they try to manipulate with Alchemy and that's why most Alchemists spend their life's perfecting one "path", but Ed is highly knowledgeable about many different areas and he's only just an adolescent a lil bit more than a child. It also brings us to Winry, Al and Mei, all brilliant and hard working children.

This chapter was released shortly after Hiromu Arakawa was finally able to conceive her first child. She said she wanted Ed to know the pain of harnessing life, which is how the rod scene was created. What I really like about this episode is that Ed knows that showing mercy is precisely the reason he is in the situation he is in, yet, instead of doubting his values, he just accepts it as part of the price he has to pay to keep his convictions

The only part that doesn't add up about Hoenheim being the one that brought alkahestry to the East is that Ed and Al should've had a better understanding of it. If their dad established eastern alkahestry it doesn't make sense that they only had books on western alchemy to learn from around the house. Oversight perhaps

Perhaps but I think it could be explained by the fact that Hoenheim is really a little knowledge goblin so he probably has books upon books studying alchemy to try and find a way to stop the father. We see him putting together the pieces of what the Father is doing and it's the Western Alchemical circle so it makes sense that if he's studying it for his own purposes - the boys would pick that up in turn as they learned from his books as he never directly taught them :(
