NOW WE HAVE TO WAIT UNTIL OCTOBER!

CRY!!

I thought Kyou-u could stay with MaoMao because he lost his memories, therefore he was not considered a threat. The rest of the children remembered their origins, lived through the uprising and know their whole clan was essentially wiped out. The Emperor considers them a liability and he placed them with Ah-Duoh so they could be watched (as he trusts Ah-Duoh to be loyal to him, or most importantly to Jinshi.) But what a journey this was! Thank you for watching and sharing your thoughts, can’t wait for season 3!!! ❤️

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Perhaps but it's the implication that it's 'safer' for him to not remember implies that there's more to him and his position than we will ever have clarified. If it's safer for him to remain unknown and to never remember his connection - it could be because someone could weaponize him in the future if he is the heir to a clan now wiped out. Whereas living an anonymous life keeps him out of harm. Especially as he was treated with such respect during Maomao's time in captivity. It seems he's of higher birth.

Your reaction when Kyou-u interrupted Maomao and Jinshi was so funny haha. My favourite part of the reaction for sure! The scene where Maomao read Xiaolan’s letter really made me emotional especially when we saw Maomao cried. I’m very happy to hear that Shisui has become one of your top characters!! Thank you for your wonderful reactions as always! It was really nice to rewatch the series again with you!

Nouf

The first time I watched this I broke down crying. Didn’t think I’d cry AGAIN watching your reaction 😭

JemLC

Not sure if someone told you this but Shisui is loosely based off Tamamo-no-Mae, the nine tail fox spirit. It’s an interesting read if you ever get the chance!

Mina E.D

It's so funny how they're intentionally edging us with the kiss we want 😅. I can feel the writers laughing at us. I'm glad they fed us with a lot of "moments" though. Can't get enough of Jinshi and his yearning especially in this season 💘 Also "Chou-u" is on the chopping block fr, and I'm sure many people agree🪓🪓. My lizard phobic ass could have also gone without him bringing one in the room. He disturbed me in more ways than one 😑

I want to express my gratitude once more for yours reactions videos to Apothecary Diaries. Your reactions were not only entertaining but also felt incredibly authentic, making it seem as though we were experiencing the show together in your room. I truly enjoyed every moment of it! I’m eagerly looking forward to watching Season 3 with you as well. Your talent for synthesizing and analyzing content continues to amaze me! I particularly admire how you delved into the nuanced emotions and intentions of the characters this season, especially Jinshi, Shisui and Suirei. Your insights into their psyches were profound and enriching. Thank you again for your wonderful work! ❣️

A few observations 🔎 I sensed that if Jinshi bore a scar from the last episode, Maomao would find it appealing, as it adds character and enhances his masculinity. Now that he has this blemish, his beauty feels more relatable, especially since he earned it while saving her. Maomao’s tears, despite her emotional reserve, highlight the depth of their friendship. Her reaction to Xiaolan's letter and losing her first genuine group of friends was particularly heartbreaking. I felt more emotion from Xiaolan's abrupt departure than from the anticipated outcomes featuring Shisui at the end. Xiaolan’s exit was sudden and without ceremony, a proper goodbye, leaving her unaware of her friends' fates. 😢 Suirei’s joy at the news of the children waking up brings happiness and relief, especially after witnessing Shisui's death. The contrast between her sadness and the uplifting news is heartwarming. 🤗 Shisui’s decision to trade the hairpin, despite its significance, raises questions. Perhaps she hopes it will return to the palace, prompting Jinshi to seek answers about what it was exchanged for. Additionally, providing her new name to the trader may be a way to signal to Maomao that she is still alive. Tamamo does sound by thr way like Maomao. 👀

Mickael Landry

Could you possibly clarify these points for me? 🤔 Why was Maomao dismissed from the rear palace? Is it because she was an apothecary, and now that her father is present as a doctor, they prefer to retain him instead of Maomao? Or is it connected to the likely official announcement regarding Jinshi? I understand that she can no longer work under his command since he is no longer a eunuch, but why can't she remain under Gyokuyo's supervision? Did I overlook something? Are we aware of the content of the letter that Shisui handed to Jinshi in the previous episode? Could it be the letter written by Xiaolan? I'm a bit lost haha. Why does Maomao want to chop off her pinky finger in a manner reminiscent of her mother, who, in a fit of depression and resentment, did so to curse Lakan? Although the scene may seem trivial and comedic, watching Maomao attempt to mutilate her finger felt quite unsettling.🤙🏻🔪🙀

Kita

Jinshi has taken his rightful place as the Moon Prince - it wasn’t explicitly said here but that’s what was implied - I guess I just knew that cause I read the light novels and it’s a lot clearer in the light novels. That’s why he says he was in charge of the Shi clan and cleaning up that mess. He wouldn’t be in charge of that if he was still playing the role of the Eunuch Jinshi.

Kita

I am going to reread vol 5 and 6 before season 3. Maybe vol 5 before October and then vol 6 before March 2027. It will be my third time through the volumes….i am just obsessed. Currently I am reading vol 16 which releases parts weekly on j-novels so that will take me to April. Season 3 will be very exciting, but I am looking forward to season 4 more. With the way we are going, we should get season 4 sometime in 2028 🤞🏽

Mickael Landry

As a final thought, you were hoping for a kiss and are disappointed not to have seen it, but I feel quite the opposite, haha. 💋🙅‍♀️ I've come to view this show more as a series of mysteries and intriguing plots rather than a romance. I'm beginning to wonder if Maomao accepts Jinshi's love, could that mean the end of the show? This creates quite a dilemma; we want the series to continue indefinitely, yet we also want to see Jishi and Maomao unite at the same time. Where are we meant to go from here? I believe this is why every time Jinshi attempts to kiss Maomao, he is always interrupted. Their kiss could very well be the conclusion of the Apothecary Diaries. Quite the predicament for you!🙈

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Yeah it was really unclear as he's back in the outfit and guise of Jinshi so I presumed until everything is cleared up with the Shi Clan they would just make an excuse to explain Jinshi's departure and then he would step out as the Moon Prince officially.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

She was never Gyokuyo's Lady in Waiting after her initial return. She only ever worked with Gyokuyo on Jinshi's command. With Jinshi stepping into his new position she likely had to depart and Gyokuyo likely wouldn't stop Maomao from leaving unless she specifically asked. Plus with Loumen deciding to stay in the Rear Palace I imagine she did not want to leave the Pleasure District without someone capable of keeping them stock because they are her family. So that probably factored in her decision to return. The letter that Shishui handed to Jinshi has no connection to Xiaolan. It featured potential threats / plots against the Emperor so she was helping to weed out the rot left behind by her mother truly and completely. We never know what was said but it may factor in to S3 especially as Aylin and Ayla were not dealt with in the end of S2. I think it's more part of her practicing medicine and having no regard for herself. We've also seen lizards and their tails regenerating as a thematic prospect so I think Maomao is likely trying to see if she could get her pinky finger to grow back again and to document the process now that she's able to see it in action haha!

Greybeard

I also started rereading from volume one in December. Now, I am on volume 15 and eagerly awaiting the release of the ebook for volume 16 at the end of May. Season 3 will be great, I'm sure. However, I hope we make it to at least season six, which should be the best one yet.

11:44 The effect of a man who had been suppressing his hormones for so long now having to deal with being reintroduced to them so suddenly, like an animal in heat. 19:37 Having interacted with people with memory issues, learning you have memory loss is painful, it can tear a person apart. Imagine learning you have lost much of your memory, you would desperately try to recall it. Being around the other children would be a daily reminder that he's lost something important. He can grow now, not having to relive those traumatic memories of his mother's corruption and ignorance of him. You can tell how nicely this story ends after 4 books now, with exception to the minor details the author introduced to further the story. So, Tamomo is a Japanese mythological tail about a foreign princess who crossed the ocean to Japan. . . or so I've heard. here's an interesting thought. Lihua had a male child, but the emperor never took her as empress. Gyokuou, though, he doesn't hesitate to make her empress. While I would love to assume he's in love with her, it's also a possibility that he chose her as empress because of her intelligence. I'm bummed, though. I really wanted to see your reaction and theories about where season 3 is going from the spoiler free teaser of a field of grain that aired right after the final episode.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I didn't even know there was a teaser because nothing appeared :') In terms of Lihua not being made empress - I'm fairly sure there wasn't really any time as her baby died fairly shortly after birth and Lihua also got sick so there was a lot of stress ongoing. Which is different to Gyokuyou's situation. It could be because she's seen as better suited to her role as the Mother of the Empire but it could also be that she's had 2 surviving children further securing her status above all others?

OH MY GOODNESS (last omg till October :( ) SPOLIERS SINCE NOW YOU ARE CAUGHT UP First thing, I love this scene between maomao and jinshi so much! you can tell just how much maomao has grown over the seasons by allowing jinshi to touch her and even reciprocating that touch by still holding his hand. The only time we have seen her feel comfortable enough to do this was with Shisui (and if you have to know I was a Shimao shipper till the very end and I was a proud captain on my "it was never meant to be" ship tyvm). And then she shows her care by rewrapping jinshi's wound, a way we have seen in the past is how maomao communicates her worry, her actions towards those she loves are often acts of service or healing since she see those as having immense value. And then finally we can see Maomao touching jinshi of her own accord. But we can also see that Jinshi has grown! No more smiley conniving enuch, no more forced facade. He is childish yes but he is honest, and I think that's when maomao loves him the most. He remembers that she is not allowed to touch corpses but he also knows maomao respects her father enough to follow that rule even now. Jinshi also pushes maomaos boundaries, but now it is a push and pull between them that feels finally balanced. Oh man and then jinshi's insecurity with his scar and how maomao quells it instantly using her honesty though bluntness, and that is when Jinshi loves Maomao most. And all that was just the one scene! The next scene is really sad but I really want to point out its importance. Maomao at no point in this series until this episode, has shed a tear. The show decided it would be too depressing but after losing, Shisui and Xiaolan. Then with her father being in the rear palace. This would all be terrible but there is one final thing that makes Maomao so depressed she almost follows her mothers footsteps. Jinshi never visits her. In her deepest depression, she sees her parents story playing out before her like a movie she's seen before and in her grief was ready to cut off the same pinkie finger that grew back to never be in love again. Whether platonically or romantically she decides all it brings is pain. This is all thwarted by Jinshi interrupting her. Like seriously she was about to cut off a limb for real but the moment Jinshi showed up, maomao unties her tourniquet at just him appearing is proof enough to keep it. OH MAN I WISH THE SHOW KEPT THAT. Dude I feel like it was so important just to be lightly hinted at. Also Xiolan doesn't know Shisui is "dead" or that maomao was kidnapped and cant come back the palace after being rescued or anything, by maomao not responding she can live in blissful ignorance that the trio will always be together. (BUT THEY WILL NEVER MEET IN THIS LIFE AGAIN AHHHHH MY HEART)

Peaches

I want to thank you for uploading this series, I have been looking forward to it every week for awhile now and ill miss our weekly updates. I'll see you again for season 3 part 1 in October and then part 2 next year in April. <3

Buzzard

That letter to Maomao is still one of the saddest anime moments I've ever seen. 😭

Mickael Landry

Looking back on Maomao's journey, it's indeed truly amazing to think about how she used to flinch at just the sight of Jinshi, seeing him as a miserable person.  Now as you mentioned, she has made physical contact with him multiple times, letting him lean on her and even recognizing his kind nature. This change shows a lot of personal development.  📈 Maomao's tears for Xiaolan mark as well a powerful moment in her character development, I totally agree with you, especially given her history of suppressing emotions from a young age. This vulnerability signifies a significant change, as she begins to reconnect with her feelings and embrace the emotional depth she had long avoided. This awakening likely contributes to her increased openness to Jinshi's advances by the end of the story. 🤗 Your idea about Maomao's extreme action of trying to cut off her own limb is really interesting.  💯👍 You think it was caused by a mental breakdown due to losing her friends and being separated from everyone at the rear palace.  As if she chose physical pain over being stuck in her sadness. That's a solid theory you're putting forward. I was actually curious about what Sophie thinks about this scene.  Is it also possible that our quirky scientist did this as part of an experiment, maybe as a future project to look into how a eunuch's body part could regenerate, as hinted in earlier episodes, haha?  🤙🏻🔪🔬👩🏻‍🔬 On the other hand, Xiaolan's lack of knowledge about Shisui's fate and Maomao's situation helps her keep a sense of hope and happiness.  This blissful ignorance, to use your words, acts as a protective barrier for her emotional health, shielding her from the harsh realities that could disturb her peace. 💕👧🏻💬

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I've already explained what I think in relation to that scene and it has nothing to do with her being depressed and wanting to sever her attachment to love or relationships. Maomao constantly experiments on herself. We know she has a fascination with lizards and their tails being able to grow back. Considering how giddy she is in the moment - it's not a decision made from duress or upset but one of scientific curiosity. Michael I'm confused by the 'curious about what Sophie thinks about this scene' 😂 as the point you made is exactly what I mentioned in a previous comment about regenerative abilities. I'm like "you already know because we discussed it?!" We'll agree to disagree Peach but Maomao is not the type to sever her pinky finger for anything less than scientific curiosity. We know she experiments on herself. Untying the tourniquet is because she knows Jinshi won't let her harm herself in pursuit of scientific knowledge. That's something that has been set up time and time again with him confiscating items that she could use to poison herself. If the scene played out immediately after reading Xioalan's letter I'd maybe agree to some extent but considering she's happy in her new position and the relationship she's building with Kyou-u - it doesn't match the tone or the mood. It's meant to be a light hearted "oh fgs Maomao not again" because she's been so restricted on her personal experiments being in the Rear Palace that now she has the freedom she's not looking at it in concern to herself. Jinshi's concern is what disrupts her and distracts her. But again, it has NOTHING to do with her severing connections to love or emotion. I think that's a very presumptive statement considering the tone of the anime completely shifts and contradicts your perspective. If you are using additional context from the Light Novel - then I can understand where your perspective may be coming from but that likely differs in tone so an Anime Only watcher is not going to come to that same conclusion. The tears alone show that Maomao is learning and growing. I discussed that in my outro extensively. I highlighted its importance. This also isn't the first time we've seen Maomao being more open in her affection to Jinshi - it's more just a continuation. She touched Jinshi a lot in 2 x 11 and 2 x 12 without flinching or pulling away from him. It's been a development we've seen playout across the entirety of S2. Peach I will preface that if you are referring to the Light Novel and its context and applying that to the Anime then please don't - I'm going to be reading the novels and making my own comparisons so I don't want spoilers for the Light Novels. I have mentioned time and time again in the reacts that I will be reading them. Takes away from the fun if people just straight up provide context that's different between the LN and the Anime. Perspectives are going to be different based on whether someone has additional context from reading the Light Novels versus Anime Only. I'm already counting down the days till October :') Holding off on reading the Light Novels until the summer so I don't feel the urge to just immediately read ahead!

Mickael Landry

I misspoke, my bad. I informed Peaches that I had previously asked your perspective on that particular scene haha. Sorry if this has caused any confusion. 😅 Don't worry, I have read your credible response to my comment. I believe that this scene is open to various interpretations, something I actually appreciate about this show: the possibility to consider different angles. That being said, I tend to lean towards your theory Sophie. It's true that the light and humorous tone of the scene mainly reminds me of Maomao just doing Maomao things, which means conducting silly experiments on herself. 🤪 If there had been a soundtrack with a melancholic sound in the background and Maomao had appeared serious and quiet, Peaches' theory would have carried more weight.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I think from my understanding Peaches perspective is correct for the Light Novel but my perspective is correct for the anime. There seems to be some criticism with the anime for changing the tone from the Light Novel so I think it is just an artistic difference leading to differing perceptions across media! :')

Mei

Xiaolan's letters and Maomao crying is such a heartbreaking scene. I'll really miss their trio! I really, really love how this part showed us just how Jinshi and Maomao's relationship has come a long way. Like, she's no longer averse to his touch. Maomao let him hold her hand while they were laying down together. She reached out to touch his face (with THOSE eyes). The BITE! THE HUG! THE LAP PILLOW! THE ALMOST KISSES (esp the one toward the end AAAAA)! Her assuring him that his value isn't on his beauty ;u; I laughed a lot when you said "you should die for real" because Jinshi actually muttered something about how he should've sent him to the gallows in the LN HAHAHA Btw, it may not be too obvious since they look similar, but Jinshi's wearing his imperial clothes here (it's darker with more layers). ^^ Thank you so much for the reacts to this series! So excited to see more of them on October!

Carlo Marasigan

Hey Sophie! I love that you loved Apothecary Diaries. This was one I didn't expect to love myself but it turned out to be exactly the type of story I love. It reminds me of one of my favorite TV shows, House MD with a nicer protagonist and a romance angle. If you ever want to go into rom com I just want to recommend Kaguya Sama Love is War. In the meantime im looking forward to Demon Slayer!

Peaches

Yes Yes! Sorry for the late reply, I should have clarified that this all happens in the light novel and I was lamenting that it wasn't implemented in the anime. Although anime maomao is inspired by ln novel maomao they definitely have a different personalities and how they view the world. It's quite hard to describe in just these comments so you'll just have to read them later yourself :p. I also apologize for the spoiler. I thought you were reading the light novels sooner than October since I heard about you going out and buying them, not clarifying I was referring to them and accidently spoiling is definitely on me, so sorry!

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Haha it's okay!! I will be reading them but I'm trying to hold off until Summer time because I worry I'll want to read ahead of S3 :')

Unholy

I love this show so much. And now I will cry

Dillon leeming

"You should die for real " is crazy. Don't disagree tho
