A little funny to listen to the intro an hour after the reaction where you ask if you’re crazy for thinking Sukuna is hot as he is possessing the body of and murdering another teenage boy 😅 Not that murder is equivalent to grooming and I’m certainly not trying to defend Makima just a little funny I’ve watched this show with a lot of people now and it’s interesting to see how the reaction to episode 5 can almost be clearly divided based on gender lines. Like many of my guy friends watch that scene with their jaws on the floor barely able to keep from drooling meanwhile when I watched with my mom she watched that scene with her arms crossed and literally said out loud “She’s *never* going to sleep with you dude!!” Again not trying to defend Makima’s actions, just want to give some perspective on those dudes who seem to love her. So many people who watch this show see Denji purely as a self-insert, they aren’t seeing him as his own person as a teenager, they aren’t considering the harmful implications, the word grooming doesn’t even enter their minds, they just imagine themselves in that scenario where a beautiful dominant older woman seems interested in them and imagine how nice that would be. While they may not be understanding the gravity of what’s happening to Denji they are successfully putting themselves in his shoes…they’re just falling for the same trap he is. They’re being manipulated right alongside him which I have to imagine was intentional on Fujimoto’s part (csm was published in Shonen jump after all, the intended audience is literally teenage boys who are the last people I would expect to respect what is actually happening to Denji from an adult’s pov). Maybe a good way to summarize my empathy with people who “don’t get it” would be something like, as a dude, I would love if that happened to me now as an adult, teenage me would have loved it if it happened to me as a teenager, but adult me would *never* want that to have happened to teenage me. A friend of mine in highschool was groomed and entered a relationship with his adult babysitter and I saw personally how it fucked him up mentally. Regardless I hope this hasn’t come across as too devil’s advocate, I thank you for your maturity and responding to the situation honestly and as an adult should treat the situation realistically. Now to actually watch the rest of the reaction after writing this novel. Kobeni hold on darling I’m coming

I'm not discussing teenage boys falling into the same trap as Denji. I am discussing adult men who will likely defend Makima and use the same rhetoric to defend ACTUAL predators as 'teenage boys are lucky' - it's more about the problematic attitude leads to dismissing victims when they would be outraged if the role was reversed. With Sukuna, it's not his actions but his personality that I was commenting on which is very different to this situation where there is active grooming and manipulation. Again - if teenagers are defending Makima it can be chalked up to them not understanding the situation and its severity. I'm referring to adults in my discussion. I am also a victim of grooming from the age of 13 to 17. Which is why the subject matter hits very close to home for me and I am very black and white in my view of it.

Dinji didn't do anything sexually in his past as a child because that's not in the Manga. However if you go back to episode 2. Denji doesn't transform into the Chainsaw devil to kill a fiend because he didn't want to get blood on some porn mags on the floor. So I would argue that Dinji's behavior stems from three sources. One is the hormones of a teen-age boy running wild, the second is his craving for basic affection that he never received or was exposed to as a kid and the third is that he for sure has been exposed to pornography at some point and that's probably where I believe he has gotten his views on sex and relationships twisted up.

Just because it's not shown doesn't mean it's not hinted strongly at that there's more to it. Subtext is crucial in media - what's beneath the surface. Not everything is explicitly stated or spelled out. We don't know much about his younger years but if he was willing to sell parts of his body - he was also likely willing to sell himself sexually as was first suggested when he was told he had to pay back his father's debt. Anime depictions also differ to Manga. They aren't a direct page by page depiction which again can either remove or add further context that the Manga did not mention. It also doesn't refute my point as hypersexuality is linked to porn consumption at a young age. Even if sexual abuse is not the case but rather porn consumption, the constant exploitation he has experienced and then witnessed through viewing pornography has left a traumatic mark to the point that he doesn't see the sexual grooming as wrong but rather a normal act.

There is absolutely something wrong with Makima. Its both subtle and obvious isnt it? Too many people who watch this think that its Denji being inappropriate but Makima is clearly the adult.

I love the look of sheer disgust Sophie pulled seeing that big flesh monster 😆 also gotta agree with that scene you said being really hot 😆

My cutie Kobeni, I can't hate her, she just needs to put the knife down and get a hug 🫂 And why are devil hunting and sex work her only options, surely McDonald's is hiring 😭😭😭

As an amab person who experiences hypersexuality from my own experiences since I was like 14 or 15, I very much identify with Denji. He tends to show rather sharp instincts for danger (as Power noted when she tried to kill him to get Meowy back) but he exhibits such a massive blindspot when it comes to the idea of human connection that his own personal agency, well-being, and sanity feels powerfully overriden but predatory powers that offer such things in a transactional fashion. It took a lot of time, work, and a partner who was a very aggressive advocate for victims of such things for me to genuinely use the term "abuse" to describe it, and even then, it was at the hands of a peer that had no material or physical power over me, only that element of human connection as my friend. Now imagining that but with an adult who's your boss and may also have the means to physically threaten your life? Makima is a monster. One of my favorite characters in the series, but a monster. It's also why I like Power so much. She's still friendly with Denji even beyond their sexual interaction, she doesn't AT ALL trust Makima because she openly laments being caught by her and describes it with villainous language, and overall someone I identify with as an adult now. Thank you for your insight on such topics, it means a lot.

Love the lowkey moments that make these characters and relationships feels so grounded & real, and how it contrasts with the more insane aspects of the story lol. that moment with the two partners sharing a cigarette is such a sweet little moment. I went back to check whether those black & white shots in the outro were direct panels from the manga because a lot of them looked pretty accurate but I believe they were all either recreations or original pieces by whoever made the ed :)

Wonderful reaction - I love Aki and Himeno's dynamic. So Denji is quite interesting from a social work perspective in a bunch of ways. As a UK based Social Worker, I use something called the Brooks Traffic Light Tool when gauging and assessing natural and harmful sexual behaviours in young people and children. Using the tool, Denji is presented as remarkably well balanced considering his traumatic and neglectful youth starting out (but this kind of resilience is often a biproduct of trauma, so it doesn't minimise it at all). Sexually, wanting to have sex, wanting porn, engaging in consented sexual activity is all within typical parameters of "normal" for his age group. HOWEVER the moment Makima enters the equation his behaviours jump from green, skipping amber, right squarely into Red as harmful atypical behaviours due to the age difference, power dynamic, coercive behaviours, risk taking behaviours for sex. Although his traumatic past likely plays a significant role in his presentation - and we absolutely can't rule out sexual abuse and exploitation in his past, I feel his poor socialisation and stunted development plays a much bigger role, especially when there is someone like Makima actively exploiting his delayed social development and lack of relational skills. This is more anecdotal- but in my experience, Harmful Sexual Behaviours presenting in teenage boys were more often tied to long term neglect and sudden changes to social environment or social/family dynamics, and would tend to start presenting seemingly out of the blue. Denji going from years of solitude, abuse and neglect to suddenly being both coerced and love-bombed by Makima, who has power over whether he lives or dies and then having not only peers and colleagues, but housemates too could absolutely trigger sexually dysregulated behaviours.

Yeah, I used to do Childrens services, but moved to NHS. I'm hoping to become a practice educator and have been toying with the idea of starting a youtube channel applying social work theory to TV shows - but life is too hectic at the moment lol

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Oh amazing!! Yeah it's definitely a hard project to balance alongside the NHS! I know it can be very demanding!

Midnight_Kitty

Exactly right, Denji is a trauma victim especially when it comes to Makima.

Shahab Qalans

your point at the beginning is so true, and i remember when i first watched chainsaw man and i was about denji's age i thought that it wasnt that bad what makima was doing and obv now i realise makima is creepy asf and i hate her

HAL

the problem is people who start using that as an excuse along the lines of "its not that evil BECAUSE she's hot and so he should be enjoying it" - thats fucked up makima is evil she's still hot that doesn't make her any less evil though
