i felt like i was seeing double lol

We loveee a shounen era tbh! I feel like they're great comfort shows, even when there's so much pain, cuz of the lovable casts and humour. Also would be really interesting to see your reactions to older shows like Naruto (the writing of the women is rough in this one (it still has an odd nostalgic place in my heart), but again I think it'd be a great vehicle for discussion since I find so many times reactors lowk just fall back on misogyny when speaking of the women in the show instead of the poor (imo at least) writing choices that make them dislike those characters in the first place) or just shows you don't end up loving much/at all (cuz authenticity ftw!! also just great to have differing opinions in the reaction space). Anyway time to get traumatized by THAT scene again lol.

charlie

that thumbnail 😂don't worry Sophie we are all there with you lol

DARK SOULS 2 MENTIONED!!! Also that kiss...that was something 😆 the "errrrUUUUURURURGH" noise was perfect, proper fucking gives you the boke 😆

So alot happens in episode 7, Himeno is weird to talk about particularly without spoiling anything. She's been through alot and she wants a life with aki outside of this devil hunting shit. There's still no excuse and yeah it's not a "fuck yeah denji" moment there's no music in the scene, denjis not excited he confused and lost. As this goes on I'll be interested to see what you think of himeno going forward. More fun things is my love of devil's weird little quirks like the fox devil will offer better deals if she thinks they're hot, she saw aki went " ay yo" and he can now call on her head. The bar scene with denji looking at the menu and he can't read it, he's 16 and can't read a menu. His education or lack there of comes up every now and then but he needs more care how is it ok for him not being able to read.

*Makima mentioned* "Fuck you Makima" The correct way to watch CSM

What struck me around here reading this is the rapid speed at which Denji seems to achieve (what he thinks are) his goals/fulfill his dreams. Like for example I initially expected the quest for boobs to take longer but it was achieved in a handful of chapters, then he gets his first kiss extremely quickly, and his episode one wish of ‘getting with a girl’ is now in front of him a short time later. In most Shonen my expectation would be that achieving these goals would be subverted by having them dangled in front of the protagonist for a long time and maybe achieved at the culmination of long arcs like as a reward. In CSM they are subverted by being achieved quickly relatively easily and then just as quickly being shown to be disappointing or *wrong*. Touching boobs proved to feel completely hollow when there was no emotional intimacy behind it, the kiss wasn’t worth it because it could never feel good enough to erase the memory of the vomit, and now he’s being propositioned while vulnerable by someone who should know better. Doing it this way really lets the audience examine and think about what it means to dedicate yourself to similar kinds of goals in real life? How many young boys reading this series can only think about losing their virginity and nothing else? Denji seems to keep asking himself Are all these goals flawed from the start or is there something inherent to being human that makes a state of total satisfaction impossible to achieve? will we always as people be more happy during the chase. I love how these are the kinds of ideas being thrown around in a show about a kid with a Chainsaw head

And DS3 is best Souls 😁 though Sekiro’s my fromsoft goat

All though there usually are some common tropes and themes among shonen anime, they are all still different shows and unique in their own ways. And I feel like people who will dismiss a show just because it’s a shonen are missing out. I mean for example the show k-on is a slice of life show about a group of high school girls in a band and it’s classified as a seinen, meanwhile a show like chainsaw man is a lot more mature than k-on and yet it’s a shonen. So really the classification is just based on what magazine the manga is serialized in. Even a show like Vinland saga which most people would agree is a show that is very deep and a mature, actually originally started as a shonen manga then later moved to a seinen magazine. Also glad to hear your considering watching Naruto, that was actually the first anime I ever watched besides like Pokémon or beyblade. and while it is a long series I feel like it grabs your attention right away and it’s not like a show that takes alot of episodes to get good like some other long running series.

Ster_arch_13

I am very glad you‘re talking about Denji‘s age. A lot of people seem to either miss or just completely disregard the fact that he‘s 16 and being taken advantage of by women who are well into their 20s. And I agree, „it‘s just fiction so why care“ is a ridiculous view, especially here. Like clearly the author wrote it this way for a reason, it‘s SUPPOSED to be talked about.

I think is perfectly fine to not like Makima for the reasons you brought up, what she's doing is disgusting and she should be in jail. But I also think it's fine to like her and find her hot, so long as you are willing to have that conversation and not normalize her behavior. She was literally designed by the author to make people feel "if evil, why hot". I find her hot for the same reasons as someone like Sukuna from JJK, despite him literally being a mass murderer. They were meant to have that aura and make people feel that way. Doesn't mean we agree with what they do or are trying to normalize it.

Carlo Marasigan

As a shonen enjoyer, my favorites are Hunter "eks" Hunter and Jojos Bizarre Adventure! Solo leveling I also enjoyed but I do agree that its a bit shallow in terms of plot or characters. But it scratches a very basic itch.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I never said people couldn't find her hot just that they can't use it to justify her actions / minimise Denji's status as a victim of grooming and sexual manipulation BECAUSE she's hot.

Carlo Marasigan

"She knows he is 16, she wouldn't kiss him!" Proceeds to take him home! I knew we would be in trouble when you said that. I think some of these events though are important before we get to the movie. Cant say more without spoilers but I think darker themes are there to make the bright spots brighter.

Torje Amundsen

Fun Japanese wordplay/pun in the outro song: The subtitles say "Get on chu!" but the Japanese above it says ゲロチュー (gero chu) which phonetically sounds like "Get on chu!" but ゲロ (gero) also means vomit, and チュー (chu) is the Japanese onomatopoeia for kiss, so she's actually singing "vo vo vomit, vo vo vomit, vomit kiss" in the chorus where the spinning shot of the kiss is playing lmao

Cirac1

Lol I felt that "I can't have anything!". One thing I like (well not like) about the end of this episode is that the way it is animated and framed in a uncomfortable, confusing and morally wrong way - it isn't fun, humorous or played as a victory for Denji. It almost acts as a slap to the audience members who DO want these things to happen to the characters as a "Oh yeah, this is what you wanted? Not so great is it, huh?"

Shahab Qalans

makima's eyes remind of the hypnosis rings, reflects her character pretty well too

Atena

Adult women leave Denji alone, pleaseeee In the manga, the puke kiss is an uncensored full page, you turn to a new page and are met with that jumpscare 😨🤮

OnikeNew

I reacted exactly the same way to you as I watched this and it seemed that this is what Fujimoto intended us to feel. I feel so sorry for Denji, everyone taking advantage, he's never been safe D:

HAL

solo leveling is nowhere near frieren or apothecary diaries in quality but it is FUN and definitely worth watching to analyze anyways and especialyl ia ngenre with a lot of back and forht influence and inspiration it can be absolutely owrhtwhile to analyze shows that aren't necessarily the best

HAL

honestly the fact she's twice his age is far worse than the puke part as such

HAL

30:40 there are a lot of shows that just have questionabel fan service in them but many also just critically deal with hard topics and then have fans who trivialize that as fanservice cause they don't get the show, I'd argue chainsaw man and also evangelion would fall verymuch into the latter category while a lot of other shows actually just use fanservice as well... bait for horny fans though hteres a general problem wiht there being a blurry line between the two and people intentionally confusing it if it's gonna be a relevant part of hte story it has to actually be meaningful not just an excuse

domi

Gotta say, I have a friend who watched Solo Leveling to know how it was and he said it sucked ass lmao, but I havent actually watched it. If you do it I might accompany you on your journey... Also fyi the "X" in HunterxHunter is silent lol, no idea why tho. I think the fact that we have Denji clearly state his age and the other woman being like "holy shit SO young" in front of Himeno, and then she does everything that she does in the same night... it's pretty obvious Fujimoto is saying that it disgusting, but people insist on being obtuse. Sadly I think the show hurts itself a little by being a shonen, only bc it attracts people who don't believe that a shonen can convey messages beyond the typical ones like the power of friendship and believing in yourself, so they turn an extra blind eye to it. (I wish I was more articulate in eng, I had to rewrite that like 50 times and thats as good as it gets lol)

PrisonicFog

Twice his age is crazy. not saying it's fine but we don't have to exaggerate just to slander.

Peach

This is totally what always gets me with shounen stuff - it can be so entertaining, interesting, heartwarming, etc. but often female characters are just done dirty, if they even exist, or even when they start out interesting 🥹 It's one reason I always liked for example, Fairy Tail, even though it has plenty of fanservice, many of the girls get to have fun and be full characters too

PrisonicFog

I think it's extra important that the normal shonen demographic hear more complex messages especially when it's about something that can happen in real life.

PrisonicFog

Hunter x Hunter is a very character focused show with clever, but more importantly, emotional writing. My favorite shonen and top 5 series. Jojo is a very fun, very silly series but it does have legitimate emotional and thematic depth - I think a lot of people underestimate it as a "lolsorandumbxd" type show. Solo Leveling is fine. It's literally just Aura Farming The Show. It has an interesting hook but it very soon forgoes anything interesting or substantive in favor of hype action. It can still be fun in a "junk good" way, but it's really nothing like any of the other shows. On Chainsaw Man, I find it very interesting the way Fujimoto chose to tackle Denji being taken advantage of by Himeno. We just spent the 2 previous episodes empathizing with her, seeing some of her deepest fears and feelings, then we showcase her trying to get with a minor. There are so many beautiful and wonderfully animated scenes of just people interacting in the show and yet we are not only reminded of the visceral brutality that exists in this world, but also the heart-aching loneliness that drives and torments so many people in the show, including Himeno. While the point is obvious that what Himeno is doing is not good, i think having it be done by someone we've grown to like and understand is much braver, more realistic take on things like this. A lot of times, when people do bad things, they aren't cartoonish, conniving villains - sometimes they might be people you like which makes it all the harder to properly recognize and call out the behavior. While the side-effect is people do a lot of bargaining or choose to deny the behavior, I think it's still valuable if someone is able to contend with a fictional character they like doing a bad thing so that they might become more aware in their real lives.

What you mentioned at the start made me recall that I simply must recommend Orb: On The Movements of The Earth, it is an absolutely incredible series based in real life events(ish) with plenty of philosophy at its core and some shounen dashed in too. It was a real sleeper hit when it came out and still not many heard about it, but it is one of the greatest anime I have seen.

domi

That is very true, I just hate that people seem unable to realize it :(

Mickael Landry

I wanted to thank you and particularly Hanna Marquez 👋 in Episode 5 for totally called out that seriously messed-up dynamic between Makima and Denji in Chainsaw Man. Yeah, your discussion was so powerful! Seriously, the age gap, the major grooming red flags, and how society tends to gloss over or even romanticize this stuff when it's a woman and a younger guy? 🙄 That's some heavy stuff we need to be talking about, not shying away from. It's so true that we usually see media focusing on older guys preying on younger women, which is absolutely awful. But when the roles are flipped, it's like this whole issue just gets shoved under the rug. This creates this crazy blind spot where we're not really seeing how vulnerable young guys can be, and we totally miss the massive power imbalance at play. As you well-articulated Sophie, this whole idea that a teenage boy might feel "lucky" to get attention from older pretty women and more powerful, especially when that attention is manipulative or exploitative, is just a toxic narrative and dangerous fantasy from grown-ass men. 🤢🤮 It’s the kind of narrative that silences victims and keeps the cycle of abuse going. And honestly, props to Chainsaw Man for tackling sexual abuse, and particularly for shining a light on how boys can be victims too. That’s a huge part of why the series is so compelling and sparks such important social commentary. 💯👐 It's these raw, uncomfortable themes that make a story truly hit different and get us thinking. By showing this twisted dynamic, even in a fictional world, Chainsaw Man is basically throwing open the doors for conversations about power, consent, exploitation, and the often-ignored struggles young men face when they're in vulnerable spots. It's only by staring these uncomfortable truths in the face that we can start to dismantle those harmful societal views and make sure everyone, regardless of gender, is protected from abuse and exploitation. Let's keep the conversation going! Sorry for the lengthy comment but it must be well addressed. 🫡

charlie

I really hope you'd consider One Piece before Naruto. One Piece has some of the best writing to discuss and could be even just reading the Manga and doing manga reviews would be great. I think you'd absolutely fall in love with it

Deatheye

The national age of consent in Japan is 16, a change implemented in June 2023 that raised the limit from the previous 13 years. Individuals aged 13 to 15 can legally consent to sexual acts only if the partner is less than five years older. Guess this explains the difference in how anime handles some relations.

Chris Walker

exactly the correct reaction to that scene 😅🤣😂

Presley

not to excuse himeno's behavior or necessarily refute any of your points because what she did is clearly an abuse of power, but i do think its a bit silly that people fixate on this instance of predatory intimacy, when every character in this show is knowingly participating in denji's enslavement lol. in a world where denji is literally enslaved by his coworkers and forced to fight to the death against devils, i think himeno's actions are relatively mild on the scale of predation.

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Which I've also discussed so it's not me singling out Himeno but also criticising the system as a whole that doesn't protect minors like Denji. I even criticised the fact that grown adults ALLOWED Himeno to take Denji home knowing she was intoxicated and not doing anything to stop it which includes Aki and Makima. I've also criticised Makima incessantly so I'd be a hypocrite to not ALSO call out Himeno for preying on a minor too. I loved her as a character but that behaviour leaves a sour taste in my mouth. Without trauma dumping - I am a victim of grooming so I don't stand for any predatory behaviour towards minors by anyone and don't see it as mild but part of a larger system of predatory actions being justified and normalised.

KinsmokeWill

This reaction made my day 😂. Thank you!
