Marius Edward

Finally we are starting to get on business, as a LN reader, things are about to get wild.

Mei

Half wishing you watch OP/EDs because this season's are as good as the previous seasons. The ED's lyrics is so JinMao 😭💕. The OP is gorgeous and full of symbolisms but I feel like you can easily clock their meanings, so I guess it's more fun with you not watching them and going blind this season 😆

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Yeah I'd rather not risk spoiling anything for myself :) I can't just watch them - I'll stop and analyse them haha!

Mei

Yeah, you'll probably be able to form a looot of theories watching them 😆 it's more fun to listen to you craft theories/analyse charas as you watch the episodes so it's the best decision haha

Peaches

To preface this, I am going into this season completely blind and anything I write is, as Maomao put it, completely conjecture. I am really excited to see the new theme of this season. Currently I believe this season is going to focus on "science vs religion". As we have seen in the past, Maomao is a quintessential women of science. Even in the scary stories circle, maomao has a very pragmatic way of viewing the world around her. However, not everyone has this same viewpoint. I wonder if something equivalent to a religion surrounding this "miracle cure" for the famine is going to be contended with Maomao's realism. With the views that the plague being a punishment for the execution of the Shi Clan and how peoples religious ideations can shape how they make decisions just as much as more personal motivations Maomao has delt with in the past. Religion isn't often logical and I wonder if Maomao is going to have to grapple with someone who is as smart as she is who uses this to their advantage. Also with the fact that the older clans were named after the zodiac and are thus deemed higher is interesting compared to the fact that the la clan is granted a name but are newer. Maybe this can be a show of the rise in "modern" thinking being valued in a traditionally religious circle. I don't know if I explained that well. We've seen in previous seasons that "supernatural" things do occur in this universe. I'd like to see some discussion from maomao if she rationalizes them or if she pulls compartmentalizing until she if forced to contend with it instead. (Maomao im looking at you with jinshi's identity, don't play dumb!" Anyway these are just some thoughts, I wonder how this season will grow (pun-intended) and Sophie will be hot on the case!

I am also a fast reader, but I had to pause a few times as well when I did my solo watch, which was right before I came here to watch you! Hopefully they do fix it soon, though, because what a pain! XD You remembered SO much more than I did! I was like, do I need a recap? Nah, I remember the important stuff... No, I forgot about the bugs, forgot Chou-u lost his memory and was partially paralyzed, forgot about the pin in the bushes... >_> I'm so looking forward to watching this season with you! I bet your theories are mostly on point (as usual!), but I'm excited to watch and see how things play out! YAY APOTHECARY DIARIES IS BACK!

Dillon leeming

The La clan. this whole family out here running round imperial China, sorry li undiagnosed and unbothered. Ones basically the personal doctor to the emperors top concubine, ones a top military strategist and another has a member of the royal family acting like a love sick puppy. And what makes it so funny is they probably didn't mean to do any of that

Dillon leeming

The emperor being actually fairly nice, at least to the women in his life is nice. Normally the kings are horrible tyrants or monsters. Maybe i should watch happier anime.... yeah that might be a me thing

DrSophieDarlingReacts

Well we already have seen this theme reoccur through S1 and S2! :D The Curse Killing The Emperor's Newborns > Poison Cursed Eunach > Chemical Reaction Spiritual Manifestation > Consort dancing for her true love Blue Roses Miracle > Maomao dyed them Inheritance Divine Myth (Shrine of Choosing) > Maomao figured out it was purely biology Emperor's immaculate corpse > Arsenic that preserved him from the inside Moon Fairy Divinity > Was Grandma and then Jinshi Resurrection Drug > Anaesthetic S3 is building on the conflicts of S1 and S2 between tradition and modernity in that Maomao is seen as very 'out there' in her methods and 'misunderstood' because she expands her knowledge through science and experimentation. She's not beholden to fear and superstition. Which the general population are going to be incensed by at the idea of an impending famine. It may be that they bring in an actual religious faction but so far the theme itself of science vs the spiritual isn't new to Apothecary Diaries. It's not so much retribution in a religious sense but a divine retribution which is supernatural / spiritual which makes sense considering mythology plays a huge role in Apothecary Diaries and the founding of their Empire. The Zodiacs would also be traditional spiritualism rather than religious. The cloaked figure will be an interesting one to see if it's more religion vs modernity rather than spiritualism/tradition vs modernity. We definitely need more episodes to figure out the direction beyond the idea of an upcoming famine, especially in how it ties together with brewing resentment, jealousy, and anger at Gyoukyou's elevation!

I had to restrain myself so much from all the clues Shisui was passing along in season 2 about grasshoppers, locusts and a locust plague. The author is really good. She was setting up the next story while we were still so fucused on the last. 8:49 Some viewers have surmised that the software Crunchyroll is now using for subtitles cannot handle more than one subtitle on the screen at a time. The text just flashed by because it needed to show the translation of the text on screen. I think I'm going to agree with them that the subtitle timing was likely done by AI. Rikuson is finally getting a ton of speaking roles this season, where as the last two seasons, he showed up just twice, I think. 18:47 I'm not a fan that they changed how Maomao refers to the old lady in season 3. Another hint that the translation was heavily assisted by AI, or the current translator cares little for continuity. I really don't like it when localizers opt to replace culturally significant phrases. 33:59 Chou-U was the son of a high ranking noble, I would assume a branch family of the Shi clan. I had to delete so much of what I wrote because I feared it was probably too much info.

Starting the reaction with your own 2 Mao Maos was peak. Salutations for Gus and Sully

DrSophieDarlingReacts

I know he was the son of a high ranking noble but my theory is, that like Shishou, he was set to inherit the Shi clan as Shishou had no son of his own :) Shishou was also not biologically set to inherit so it would make sense. Hence why he was raised close enough to be considered a brother.

gus and sully are so cute i can barely handle it 🥹🥹🥹

I’m so happy that this show’s back!!! Your discussions are on-point as usual! Very excited to see how this season will play out.

Peaches

Oh man! I didn't even realize how much of religion was already a theme! Apothecary Diaries sure has some tasty writing :3

Karina

From season 2 it can be deducted that Lahan has an in with Treasury or Commerce (all those numbers he presented oh so very conveniently) so literally all of their bases are covered lol. If they had any agenda and common cause to unite under they would be utterly terrifying. And I guess others with a lick of sense and much political power can see it and are appropriately terrified (including the Emperor) while the clan members are just… doing their own things and dgaf about anything not related to their interests. Goated.

Karina

We are so back!!! I’ve missed your Apothecary Diaries reactions. 😭

Buzzard

What a great first episode. You can't imagine how much fun it is to see characters that I've met in the novels come to life, as it were. Rikuson, Onsou, Gyokuen, Uryuu and more. They're really fleshing out the cast this season.

Gpinko

LETS GOOOOOO. Gosh it’s so weird seeing Jinshi just out in the open as the Emperors Brother….lots of political drama already. So I watched the episode myself on Crunchyroll today, and the issues you were having have been fixed. However, I also just watched FlexieJay who was using Netflix the day it aired and those subtitles seemed to be much better, no lags/skips so far, so that could be an option if you have issues next time. I will say that I’ve noticed Crunchyroll has issues with dialogue and text at the same time in some series, it really is annoying. I’ve had to switch to Netflix or Hulu when it happens, really irritating. I also was going to read the Light Novels last year and I just…haven’t gotten past volume 1 yet haha. Now I’m going to wait until season 3 is over.

Seryu Ubiquitous

yey, we are back. finally we meet "meow meow" again.
