I could use your help in reshaping the Patreon rewards. Below is a poll to determine what current and potential rewards are important to you. Please vote on which things would impact your happiness in being a patron. I know that you may say that you're only a patron to support the channel, but if a certain perk would make you happy, then that's useful information.

I'm not retaining or recruiting enough patrons to make Actualol financially viable - so I'll be running a pledge drive, and trying new, bold things to make becoming a patron more appealing. I'm trying to work out which would be the most appealing, in relation to the amount of work they require from me.

I've opened this up to free patron members as well - because the question applies even more to you. Would any of these offerings convince you to become a paid member?

Please vote on current perks you enjoy, and potential perks that you'd welcome. Some of them are exclusive perks, some benefit the channel as a whole.

If you have other ideas that you'd like me to consider, please leave them in the comments

Can I add ‘some comments from the designers’ to this. I think we don’t hear enough about what the designers and publishers set out to achieve with their games, old and new.

Richaell Ribeiro

Id love to see more stuff on game design, talks with other designers, etc.

Unscripted tier lists /other videos make a ton of sense. We don’t expect scripted content that’s as prepared/joke heavy as the main channel content, but some candid behind the scenes discussions and opinions are a very real incentive.

I signed up to specifically watch the fun density extended video. I love the concept of being able to bring like 15 games when I’m walking across the city to a board game night and picking by vibes. I have an ok collection but I think I want a shoebox collection or 2 so I wanted all the recs I could get

Will Butler

I really love the newsletter, and I agree with some of the comments above on unscripted content.

Aimee Bundy

I joined for the additional video content. I've been rediscovering my love of board gaming this last year and your tastes seem to fairly often align with mine so I've found your videos really useful to help sift through the last seven or eight years of board game releases. (I used to work in a FLGS, and then I had a baby... Fast forward and he's watching your videos with me. I really regret not pre-buying games I used to sell to stash for when he was older though, some of my favourites are quite hard/expensive to source these days(!) I've really enjoyed reading back over your past newsletters today and can see me looking forward to new releases of those in the future. Things I enjoy from other content creators (not specifically board game reviewers, you're the only person I follow the content of in a focused way, rather than dipping in and out) include - YouTube lives (perhaps unboxing videos/first impressions, solo run throughs, live question and answer sessions with questions already submitted from Patreon subscribers to give initial content while waiting for people to join the live). Maybe something that all the subscribers on YouTube can access "in the moment" but only Patreon subscribers can rewatch them/view them at a later date. I like lives because they often tend to be 'unimportant' - I don't feel like I'm missing out if I don't watch one, but I also feel very lucky/privileged when I do. I do enjoy a shortish podcast (30 minutes or so? Something I can listen to in one drive or while doing the dishes etc, I often put your videos on while cooking etc and only casually watch, but that's less ideal given the visual format), but I think they're often more intensive to edit than they appear (whereas lives don't have to be polished, so the majority of the work is the time spent actually interacting etc.) My favourite merch is a badge, and definitely something that can - perhaps to my shame - motivate me. I'd definitely love interviews with designers etc. I'm not heavily invested in scripted content, I subscribe to Actualol because I think your opinions seem honest, your preferences roughly align with mine, but you explore a good variety of games. The scripted content is a bonus, but really isn't in anyway essential to how I feel about the channel. I tend to stick with patreons when I'm conned (happily, with my full consent) into feeling like there's a personal connection to the content maker. Obviously in reality there is none, but I find it much harder to leave when I feel a connection with the human (via them sharing personal stories, interacting, asking for opinions like you've done above or simply not being too robotic and business-like), because then I actually feel like I'm supporting someone rather than buying an item from a shop and my brain likes the self-important pat on the shoulder feeling it gives me.

Actualol

Thanks, that's a really helpful perspective.

Aimee Bundy

I feel appropriately emotionally conned now, thank you.

I've been a patreon subscriber for a few years now and I originally joined when you were more focused on comedy/songs. I know those are much much more effort and you have much more going on in your life, so i'm not asking for it as much as I'm suggesting that it might be an alternative way to fund your patreon. There are other content creators, specifically I know acapellascience, that base their patreon entirely on money that's debited _per video_. I'm personally unlikely to be able to offer you more monthly but I think that there are others that would pay more on a per-hilarious-video-that-I-send-to-all-of-my-friends. :-)

Philippo

I think I would find BTS content quite enjoyable. Like what a day of shooting an actual video looks like. Or what the process was like actually figuring out which 20 games you could fit in a shoebox haha

Ben Broomfield

I’d like to see another musical number one day. Even if you only did one a year, it’d complement your channel output.

Derek Foote

Was just thinking the other day what I'd like is more of hearing from Jon. Shorter, doesn't need as high a production quality, while still entertaining.

What makes me want to be subscribed to the Patreon is feeling like being part of the Actually community. I feel that discord engagement is a big part of that, and unscripted videos or meetups/ BGA games would also help with that. Alternative videos like the last Patreon bonus one (to me at least) feel weird. For lack of a better word, they feel 'clickbaity'; providing an additional list (or shoebox) to go through. Alternatively, an off the cuff ramble about fundensity in the first video would make it feel like more of a behind the scenes community event.

Patricia Gonzalez

Podcasters have found that what people want and why they join their Patreon is basically, more of what they already like. You could do a weekly podcast where you play through something with someone, talking about what you like and don't like, give members the option of joining live. I have tons of examples of people doing this but they're all in Spanish :-)

Stephanie

I have a number of subscriptions where they throw in the occasional 'coffee chat', just a brief little QA or what's going on in their life, and it definitely makes me feel more connected to those creators. Mostly I don't care about extras, I just liked your videos and I wanted to support you! Your game recs for well with my style, and I enjoy your humor.

Actualol

Haha, I knew you'd say that. But that's because we're so connected 😁

I would like some shorter videos to go with the long ones. I watch only on Patreon, not YouTube, and struggle to find dedicated time to sit and watch some of these long videos. Sprinkling in some shorter quick videos would increase my enjoyment of this channel. I am thinking of videos 3-8 minutes in length. To be more specific…I like your style, I enjoy who you are on camera and I want to see more. I want more interaction with this digital version of you. Your videos make me smile, they give me new games to try, and they help me feel better about myself as a gamer when I have no interest in the latest and greatest 6 hour long game. You tell it like it is and I have purchased many games you recommend. This is the only board game channel I follow anywhere online, you’re the best. I hope you find some rejuvenation and are able to make this work financially, but absolutely understand if you need to step away.

Janet Morris

I agree that more frequent content is what I need. A mid-month unscripted short video would make me feel like I was getting my money's worth. I think you have set a high bar for yourself, but within this patron community we could do with a more relaxed version of you. We generally receive our patron videos on the same day as your public video release. I'm sure there are reasons for that, but I often wish they were separated by a week so I would get an additional dopamine hit and it would shorten the time frame between my "visits" with Actualol.

Adrian Schmidt

None of the above. I just want you to continue making videos you love making.

Eric

Keep your costs down, no need to send things in the post. Unless it is a really high tier.

Eric

Sorry forgot to add. Various strategies to use when playing a particular game would be a cool podcast. I need to learn how to play Outer Rim, Heat, Rise of Rome and Everdell better
