Dear PatronsHere's the podcast companion to our latest Honest Government Ad; and my guest is the former Prime Minister of Australia, Malcolm Turnbull. Cool and normal. Juice Podcast 13 | with Malcolm TurnbullIt's my first ever interview with a politician, let alone a former PM. So I hope I did it justice. My main aim was to try not to get caught up too much on the past but to focus more on solutions and the future.I had to of course ask him the most pressing question - are the Honest  Government Ads *genuine* satire? - to put to bed years of doubt ever  since Attorney General Brandis refused to answer this question in the  Senate...

But more importantly, I asked Malcolm about the climate  wars and why no Australian Government has been able to pass *genuine*  climate legislation... and what we can do about it. I hope you enjoy it. As always, thank you for making this work possible.Giordano

Well played Giardano by sticking it to him early. Great work mate.

Ellejoy W

I promise to listen when my phone isn't dangerously close to a battery cliff, but please tell me you at least questioned him about the $500m GBR Foundation shitfuckery?

Ellejoy W

And ... are you not counting Scott Ludlum in your disclaimer about interviewing politicians?

Ellejoy W

Well ... now I'm on the fence about buying his book ... what the f* is it with Lib & Labor people blaming the Greens for 2009? They keep erasing Gillard & I've had a fkn gutful of it!

Ellejoy W

Oh, and I do like how Malcolm lead towards the LibNats in its current form as being incompatible for human life because of their inability to have meaningful action on the Climate Emergency.

Ellejoy W

(*Lead towards but would not confirm*)

Alan Tyrer

Malcolm was so happy with his internet speed at the start of the interview but what we got all the way through was chopped up poor quality video.

George

A refreshing cool and normal with nowhere to hide... love the podcast... and a pano would make it light better.... but kept on thinking we need to get Malcolm new curtains.

I don't know how you felt DOING that interview - but it was very revealing of the weasel words and legitimate corruption of the political class in Australia and i wanted to say specifically a very curtain pulling back interview. He admitting the extreme right wing is in charge of the liberal party was important and a fundamentally important snippet of what people who care about our planet NEED to hear - would make a good promo piece - that alone would bring people to ponder and reconsider. (BTW i loved you tied it to the liberal party therefore being incompatible with life on earth. MUCH RESPECT for saying those words out loud - so few people connect the political dots and intent to the ramifications for substantive change barring Extinction Rebellion and a few others . Listening to it - i had to take a break because the emotional rollercoaster was pretty stomach churning at times and honestly - he is while an oral smooth talker (like Obama) he is a creepy corporatist still and dissing the greens was chunderous. Also the worst heart dropping part for me was his visible wishy washy repeating bs crapfest about Assange. God i hate him for that. Bravo team for independent media starting to really show it's head in Australia besides Crikey you guys are definitely getting the word out there. Love it and stay safe and healthy!

Nice one Giordano, so pleased to see that you can attract people from across the spectrum. I don't dislike Turnbull as a person but the compromises he made to play the Liberal game always disappointed me. AND he's still playing his guard like a politician, in a forum where he could have let that slip and just be a normal bloke. I just keep thinking that he would have made a great leader if there was a better party for him to lead. Oh well. I look forward to seeing more interviews with people whose arguments/opinions/view of the world are contrary to yours (and mine) Bravo!

I guess my tolerance level is waning as the earth's temperatures are waxing. Turnbull gives a lengthy diatribe of how Oz's politicians have played patty-cake with one other, and I have to pinch my nose. For example, the conversation touches upon "compromises." Hate to tell them, but good luck trying to "compromise" with the sun's rays. What they're really talking about is trying to have their cake and burn it too. It's greed. Pure and simple. Mammon. Stuffed pockets of an elite few. "Cool and normal." And YES, you're right, Giordano: the fossil fools and their government puppets are incompatible with the continuation of human life on this planet —or the life of other species. Y'know what I would've loved to see? Naomi Klein also join in THIS conversation. As for Assange… I think Turnbull could give Fred Astaire dancing lessons the way he tap dances around your questions. Finally, I saw THIS on YouTube and it sounds tailor-made for an Honest Government Ad: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Xq8H0GHU8AQ

Ellejoy W

Can someone also explain (mathematically) how he thinks it's a minority of hard right pollies calling the shots and ready to blow the govt up if they don't get what they want? Wouldn't it be a majority of Libs are hard right?

thejuicemedia

I hope you get a chance to listen Lynda - and no sorry, I didn't manage to ask him about the Reef grant - there's so many things I wanted to talk about but I wanted to steet the conversation away from specific policies as I would've just given Malcolm a platform to defend them... which isn't want I wanted to do with this interview! Nevertheless, I hope you enjoy what we did discuss

thejuicemedia

Yes I noticed all the buffering whilst editing the video - super ironic!

thejuicemedia

Thank you for this great feedback Wendy! I am glad I did ask him that question about the survival of humanity on the planet... In retrospect I think I could have set the question up better to make it harder for him to disagree! But hey I suppose that comes with experience Thank you so much for listening and I hope you are keeping well despite all the chaos raging around you up there!

thejuicemedia

Thanks Peter! Yes, I also felt Mal could have let his guard down a bit more. I think the problem for him is that he felt like he had to be very careful about how his words might be quoted by the media - which is probably true. But then on certain issues, like the bill of rights, medevac legislation and the prosecution of Witness K, and especially Assange, I really felt he could have afforded to be less guarded.

thejuicemedia

I'm not sure of the numbers Lynda but that minority of Liberal MPs + the Nats are enough to deprive the LNP of the Senate majority needed to pass legislation such as the NEG, and the CPRS before that. You could look up the NEG and see who voted against it in the LNP to find out the exact numbers

Diana Deeley

Very well managed Giordano, a great start; onwards and upwards!

Moz in Oz

The problem happens when they propose legislation bad enough that Labour and the smaller parties won't support it, but the far right within the Liberal-National-LiberalNational-Country party won't either. If they were prepared to be a bit more flexible they could get it through. But remember that 90% of bills are supported by Labour and for that stuff it doesn't matter what the far right think.

Michael Salt

I had manier lol moments in the car, particularly when you were trying to get that endorsement for being genuine satire.

Alan Tyrer

If he was open and honest he would be shunned at the gentlemans club for sure.

Ellejoy W

Yep, I understand why you didn't bring up the GBR Foundation shitfuckery - if we got caught up on all the past actions, then that would prevent us from solution orientation.

Paul Elwell-Sutton

Giordano, its a good start, but you need to improve your interviewing skills to ensure the interviewee doesn't control the interview. Be less deferential and more concise. We have some very good interviewers in NZ such as Kim Hill and Katherine Ryan on Radio NZ, where you could get some ideas.

thejuicemedia

Thanks for the feedback Paul. It's funny, some people said I shouldn't interrupt my guests as much; others say that I should not allow the guest to control the interview.... I'm learning that everyone has a personal preference! Nevertheless, thank you for the recommendations

Casey Handmer

It's always easier to control the narrative when making videos because the subject can't reply or prevaricate. But all politicians are really good at changing the subject, though few are as transparent as Rudd in that regard.

Casey Handmer

Another point is that as much as you would like to crush Turnbull in an interview, beyond a certain point it's not constructive.

Fern

Oh god, once a politician always a politician with that man - he was virtually unable to give straight answers to anything you asked... not for lack of trying on your part though, Giordano. Good job! Just found this great YouTube video you may appreciate, BTW: https://youtu.be/VkfTJbt-Ejg.

thejuicemedia

haha yes it was a bit frustrating! Thanks for the link, Fern :)

Scott Hend

The greens are self righteous and deluded. If they let the CPRS pass they could have bargained to ramp it up as an easy way to horse trade. And Labor would have done that because they said as global action ramped up so the number of permits to pollute under the CPRS would fall.

Hettie Lynch

No, Murray, they could not. The CPRS legislation locked protection for big polluters in place for 30 years. The Gillard/Greens legislation worked. Pollution fell. Then They the wrecker axed it, just as it was about to morph into an ETS. The carbon price then was $27.40 per tonne. 2Weeks ago, the EU carbon price was Aud $41 per tonne. Using Google,I found that inflation alone would have driven the Aussie price to $30.19,well below the EU price. Yes, n the last 2weeks, because of the crash in fossil fuel use during Covid lockdown, that price has fallen by 40%, but he same would have happened here, and in the meantime, our total emissions had The carbon price been allowed to become an ETS, would have continued to fall, and Australia would have had much higher revenue, being part of the EU ETS.

Kim Ryan

Malcolm just came off as a self serving, weak man trying desperately to rehabilitate his image and incapable of admitting his failures and complete capitulation to the extreme right of his party. Hugely disappointing, but well done on the interview.

Kris Thomas

I guess I see it differently than most people. I think politics is difficult, and although I completely disagree with Malcolm's politics for the main part, at least I think he is trying to engage in a mostly honest conversation here. I'm never going to forgive him for lying about the NBN, however, fighting the extreme right wing nutjobs in his party is what got him kicked.
