Dear PatronsI wasn't planning to make another podcast before the next Honest Government Ad. But at the end of our last podcast, in which I interviewed our former PM Malcolm Turnbull, I said I would give the leader of The Greens a chance to respond to some of the accusations Malcolm made - specifically, the claim that the Greens are responsible for the past decade of climate shitfuckery because they voted down Labor's proposed CPRS legislation in 2009.This is a claim that's constantly being made - both by Labor and Liberal supporters. So I thought it would be fair to give The Greens the chance to explain their side of this story. And that's why my guest on the podcast today is the leader of the Australian Greens, Adam Bandt - who promptly accepted my invitation. There you go, folks - I said we'd be hosting the occasional debate on the podcast!Jokes aside, I really believe this is a crucial issue we need to understand more clearly, if we are to elect a government at the next federal election that will pass genuine climate legislation. Because the record shows that the only Government that has been able to do so, was a minority government (in 2010-13).And yet, for the past decade, there have been constant attempts to deligitimise and discredit this government's achievements on climate policy; such as the claim that the 2010-13 Gillard government "did not have a mandate".The way I see it, a minority government *does* have a mandate - in fact, if anything it has an even stronger mandate because it represents more than one constituency - in the case of the 2020-13 government: Labor voters + Greens voters + Independent voters - rather than just Labor or the Coalition.I address this point in my conclusion to the podcast; and I hope to explore these kinds of things more deeply as we head towards the 2022 federal election. Because if we don't understand our history, we're likely to keep making the same mistakes and being fed the same bullshit. And we just don't have time for that.I hope you enjoy this podcast, and I'll catch you all very soon for our next Honest Government Ad!Giordano xo

Thanks very much for that Giordano. I had not heard a clear explanation of the problems with the CPRS, which Adam gave. Nor had I heard the full Julia Gillard quote .,, no tax on carbon, but a price on carbon. Can you give us the quote in full, and a source? Just a note - I suspect why both Libs and Labs are so pissed off about losing the CPRS vote is that it was the trigger for BOTH parties to implode - Rudd walked away from climate policy and eventually got rolled, and Turnbull got rolled by Abbott as Opposition leader for collaborating with the enemy - if I remember correctly.

I am so glad that I changed my vote in 2010, that I changed my blind political allegiance (as "taught" by my Dads political views) and started to vote with my values. I've been volunteering at elections since 2014 and joined the party in 2018. Every election is an opportunity to vote with your values. Well done Adam & good job Giordano.

Peter Todd

Great to hear Adam's account of what went down. Shame Rupert hasn't the balls to promote all sides of a story but of course, that wouldn't be in his own selfish interests. It would be fantastic if we do end up hearing Julia's point of view in this discussion. Fingers crossed. By the way, I think it's awesome that you are able to get time with the calibre of people you've been getting for these podcasts. Full credit to you, you must be chuffed :)

My first reaction to the notice of the Bandt show was unbridled horror, however after viewing the interview I must heartlly commend Giordano for giving no ground to the wilted greens. Philosophically I am a dark green greenie but practically I cannot abide the inherent duplicity of the wilted greens. Since I choose to live in one of the most environmentally sensitive parts of Australia, I am extremely concerned about the ecosystem. In the past ten years, the greens have consistently refused to take any interest in refused to take ANY interest in eco-system-related issues however islamic rights / queer rights ALWAYS get attention. In that respect, Turnbull is 100% correct in that the greens will not be taken seriously. Note particularly that I will never again support the LNP despite hundreds of years of ancestral conservative ancestry, but neither will I back a deliberately duplicitous tribe which uses a deliberately deceptive label to delude the gullible. Whilst I have the utmost contempt for both islamics and queers, I have no problem with them having political representation. The honorable way to achieve this is by way of a 'Queers and Assorted Misfits Party' rather than a supposedly eco-system focussed party which demonstrably doesn't give a rats about the eco-system. As for the federal ICAC, the ONLY way this will ever be meaningful is if all politicians, bureaucrats and judges are permanently excluded from getting within a thousand kilometers of its implementation and administration. All three arms of government are corrupt to the core, there is no real separation of powers and consequently anything conceived by these grubs is guaranteed to be corrupt to the core.

Tremendous interview Giordano. Adam has vision. We all need to de-programme ourselves from 40 years of neoliberal social engineering, and know that actual values far transcend the narrow monetary values currently placed on everything, including the foundations of life. Here in NZ, I have always voted Green, and Values before them, because the Greens are much more than environment alone, and hold broad holistic values. What is the value of a diamond, compared to the value of justice and peace, a roof over one's head and food on the table?

Mark D Larsen

Just as I suspected: there were "booby traps" in the CPRS that would have enriched the COAL'igarchs, OIL'igarchs, and GASs'holes with more and more mammon.

thejuicemedia

Yes it's quite amazing that people keep saying yes when I invite them onto the podcast haha. I think people see this as a way of communicating to a demographic that they might not otherwise have access to. So it's probably mututally beneficial in some way...

thejuicemedia

Dammit!! I even double-checked it this time before posting... but no! Thanks for lmk about that Moz - fixed now

Gary Martin

Minority governments are not always good, it depends on the parties that they have to negotiate with. Israel is a good example.

Mark

John Howard demonstrated in his last term that "efficient" majority governments aren't all sunshine, rainbows and lollipops either.

Lea

Well... I think the term "mandate" in the terms of Australian politics is interpreted as "the opposition has to vote for X, Y and Z because the voters have clearly said they want that to happen". So, from that strict definition, people were correct, as they didnt "have a mandate" not having "got the majority of the votes" But its a rubbish concept, they don't know how many of their policies people were willing to put up, in order to get some of the policies. But, in 2010 they had something better: they had a consensus between multiple parties to bring many ideas together. So the legislation we got that year reflected _more_ of the people's views than if the govt just "had a mandate" So, I agree with you, event if I quibble your wording :)

thejuicemedia

Loving the political nerdery, Lea - yes, I agree that's better wording!

thejuicemedia

I agree, Gary, they're not always good - that's a different point.. I was just commenting on the claim that they don't have a mandate

Sandra Kirby

Hi Giordano Any tips to help me access the podcast? My iPhone screen simply goes black. Was fine for Malcolm’s podcast. I soooo appreciate Juice Media. Many thanks.

Sandra Kirby

The link did the trick thank you G.

Sandra Kirby

Fine interviewing skills Giordano. We patrons are receiving first rate returns. Just a pity that the Greens are given such a restricted platform to address the country. Surely Adam’s last few moments here would be music to many many anxious Australians’ ears( and hearts). Look at the amazingly surprising success of minority government in NZ. Consensus at work. One half of the population doesn’t feel disenfranchised as here in Oz. Currently it’s government for the winners. This isn’t democracy. All strength to you, Juice Media.

Miriam Aberdeen

Whoa… those are some strong statements "I have the utmost contempt for Islamics and queers". Skipping over the homophobia and Islamaphobia, why are suggesting that environmental issues are incompatible with lgbtq and "Islamic rights" (not even sure what you mean)? A political party is capable of supporting both. A bit horrified to see Giordano just say "cheers" to such a hateful comment.

thejuicemedia

Apologies Miriam, I agree with you and that's certainly not something I'd support. Tbh I hadn't read that part of Doug's post, I was responding to his first paragraph. Lately I've had to skim over long posts in order to respond to everyone, but that's something I'll be changing going forward to avoid this kind of thing. Doug, I think the points Miriam raises are valid. The Greens can and should support more than an environmental agenda, these struggles are intimately connected. You are of course free to disagree on that. But this isn't the place for expressing "contempt" for any group based on religion/race/gender/sexual orientation etc.

thejuicemedia

Thank you Sandra I am so glad to hear that you feel your patronage is worthwhile - that's like, the best thing to read :)

Doug Young

I have every right to have contempt for whatever group In wish and I will most definitely NOT pander to a group just because it is politically correct to do so, indeed the mere fact that something is politically correct is sufficient reason for me to oppose it. Is it suggested that we should respect politicians because they have misappropriated a title implying they are 'honorable' ? that aside, the point i was making about the wilted greens is that the name of the party is deliberately misleading. Numerous times I have attempted to get the clowns interested in very serious environmental issues but without success. They never have any problem however taking the side of minority groups which have stuff-all to do with the ecosystem, even when doing so is seriously damaging to the very thing they purport to be on about. Australia is already horribly over-populated (the virus nonsense has well demonstrated that !!!) and consequently ANY immigration is crazy, let alone encouraging a mob whose very culture is incompatible with peace. As I stated, the honorable way to support minority interests is via a party dedicated to those ends, NOT a party with a name suggesting its primary focus is something completely different. Duplicity is part and parcel of Australian politics but don't expect me to support it.

Kim Ryan

This was a fantastic interview and Adam presented a fair and balanced and gracious view not just of history but of what is possible right now as the climate emergency accelerates. Bring on the Green New Deal! And Julia!

thejuicemedia

Doug, you have every right to have contempt for whatever group you wish, I agree. And we have every right to decide what is shared on our page. What I am asking you to do is to please respect our rules if you wish to be part of this community. This isn't to be "politically correct", but simply *correct* - and more importantly, it's to ensure that this page is inclusive of all groups irrespective of religion, race, gender, sexual orientation etc.

Brozza

Poor 'ol Malcom. Still in hypocrite poli-speak mode.

Morten

You make the best political satire I have seen in along time- I love it. It brightens my day. Thank you

Miriam Aberdeen

Thank you for responding to this Giordano. From the perspective of a patron, I think I can speak somewhat on behalf of most other patrons. Even though we enjoy receiving your direct replies, please don't feel obliged to get back to all of us. I imagine our numbers will continue to grow, so it's understandable (even though I appreciate the sentiment). Your videos are gift enough :)

thejuicemedia

Thanks for this Miriam, I agree. I just really appreciate everyone's support and it's nice to show it :) But yes, agreed. PS. Doug decided to leave which I think is for the best. Sorry you had to read that here.

Mike Kidson

Audio is 80% of the intellectual content of any interview. As a professional politician with an allowance that is larger than most people's salaries, Adam Bandt would benefit greatly from investing ~$700 in a good lavalier mic and wireless transmitter.

Chip Gallo

Do they have Squadcast in Australia? I am doing an interview series right now and evaluated it because the files get stored locally to the interviewee and uploaded in the background. Higher quality but doesn't support iPhones at this point so we are using Zoom as the primary platform. I agree about putting a mike on the "talent" so to speak, but hopefully the captions make up for any intelligibility issues.
