Dear PatronsAfter a short break, we're back with our first Honest Government Ad for 2021!I decided to to kick off with this one because just yesterday the Australian Government passed the "News Media Bargaining Code", a new law that fundamentally alters the relationship between Big Media & Big Tech. And one that other Governments around the world are sure to try and emulate (Australian Government: world leaders in shitfuckery). As usual when it comes to tech laws like this, there's confusion about what the legislation entails. I've seen people arguing over whether Facebook came out on top; or whether Rupert Murdoch won the battle. Which sort of misses the main point... that the legislation is designed to align the interests of Big Media and Big Tech. So I thought, wouldn't it be nice if our Government were 100% honest about what this new law is designed to do. I hope you enjoy the outcome :)For more info I highly recommend reading what human/digital rights lawyer Lizzie O'Shea is writing about it. Lizzie shared her ideas with me when I was researching this topic, and she'll be my guest next week on the Podcast. In other news: If you're in Australia, you've probably received an email from Patreon informing you that they've introduced AUD payments. This is good news, as it means you can avoid currency conversion fees when supporting us. I need to get my head around the changes before I switch our page over to AUD. So, for now USD remains the default currency. However, if you're currently on USD and would like to switch over to AUD, you can do so as follows: 1. On Patreon.com, click your avatar in the top right of the screen2. Click Manage Memberships3. Find The Juice Media, and click Edit4. Under currency, choose AUD (other currencies supported include GBP, EUR and CAD)5. Click Update to save your settings. As far as I understand, by doing this your current USD pledge will be automatically converted to the equivalent AUD amount: so if you pledged USD5, your pledge will convert to AUD7; if you pledged USD10, it will convert to AUD13, etc.Importantly, this means that we still receive the same level of support from you, except you'll no longer be charged that extra 4% on currency conversion fees. I will write you a separate post about this once I have a better understanding of it myself; but I just wanted to let you know that this is an option!Ok, that's all from me for now. I'll be back next week with the podcast companion to this HGA. Until then, take care - and thank you for supporting our work. I'm looking forward to another big year of Honest Government Ads and podcasts. Giordano & team xo

I spotted this episode in YouTube and watched it there. Another bullseye from the team. Loved how you described Murder'ock with the same checkpoints as Suck'erberg. I'll repeat: we're now in the DISinformation Age. It's pathetic that we have to get our facts from parodies rather than the media, but I'm sure glad you've stepped up to the plate to do it! High five!

Bec Smith

I actually hadn't heard anything from Patreon about the option to pay in Australian dollars, so thank you for letting us know!

Andy

Parodies ARE the media

Robert Bismuth

Brilliant. I suspect the gov in OZ is being considered a "field test" for others in the world who want to weigh in and throttle independent voices, or at least certain independent voices. This is pretty much a travesty and goes against the intent of the Internet (the originators deliberately designed a network that at the protocol level made censorship hard, if not impossible) and the original "world wide web" out of CERN - again, an intent for open sharing of information. So sorry your "liberal government" has yet again done such an un-liberal thing as tilting the playing field to the benefit of those that really don't need any benefit in the first place ... Keep up the awesome work - and I particularly liked the "guest" speakers towards the end of the video!

FractalOne

Thanks for the heads up! I've gone though my list of a mix of currencies and updated it, this is way better. As for the episode, I love the fact that Michael West and Friendlyjordies are in it, pretty epic collab of my favorite Australian news sources

George

Great contribution, educational ... and excellent collaborations. If ever there was a govt practising "don't look at us, look over there..." it's this one. Who'd have thought they'd become an antonym frequently parodied by themselves. Knowing this could be the first domino as other govts seek to follow and tax free speech makes this worth keeping in the news. The more I see the vacuous indignation directed at big tech by some of the 'vacation takers at tax payers expense' pollies, makes this issue one of the most significant attacks on civil liberty in our time. Most might just not realise it yet. So thank you again for helping to bring it to the worlds attention.

T

Wow I can't believe you had Jordan Shanks on your videos, he's a really awful person. He spends far too much time attacking unemployed people, First Nations people, and trans people.

pix

Thankyou, this is the angle I've been waiting for. It is quite clever of them to pick a scapegoat that everyone already hates and doesn't want to defend (big tech) when trying to pass a law that makes no sense. By the way, it was a bit jarring to seeing these blokes pop up, especially with their voices eerily synchronised with their mouths.

frank pires

very good, honestly I was a tad nervous on how you and crew would play this but you played it beautifully, exposed the truth in this failed policy; N1. We've been actively boycotting news corp for over 10 years and it saddens me that my meta data will be propping up news corp and friends who I consider a greater threat to democracy than google and FB. And yes the best solution would to be to reform tax law and get these folks to actually pay tax or just a digital advertising tax and then support community news. But no LNP does not want to hurt or annoy its donors.

thejuicemedia

Oh wow, I see - thanks for letting me know Bec! In that case Patreon must be giving us creators time to inform our supporters before they announce it publicly... You'll probably receive a message from them in the near future.

thejuicemedia

Yes it seems Australia has become the lab for neoliberal policies - test them out here first! Good point about net neutrality - I was going to include that in the video, but thought that might be laying it on a bit too thick for the non-geek memebrs of our audience! Thanks as always Robert!

thejuicemedia

No worries James - and yeah it's great Patreon has introduced other currencies! Glad you enjoyed the cameos

thejuicemedia

Thanks George! I agree, it really is a very consequential piece of legislation and it's a shame - although not surprsing given the many scandals raging atm - that not many people are aware of its implications. Hopefully this HGA will raise the concerns enough to ensure other countries put up more of a fight when versions of the Code are tabled in their own parliaments. Thanks as always for your awesome support!

thejuicemedia

Thanks Pix! Yeah that's a really good point actually - everyone loves to hate both Big Mark and Big Rupert, so it's clever wedge politics at play. Thanks for the feedback on the cameos - I just thought it would be a fun thing to try out! Noted :)

thejuicemedia

So glad you like how we approached the topic, Frank - a lot of credit goes to Lizzie for her insights! And yes, taxing - whilst politically unpopular - would have been the more open and democratic approach to solving this problem. But our Govt has fully embraced neoliberal shitfuckery and prefers having companies making backroom deals with Big Tech... #Leadership

David Mackay

Hi, Giordano. I love the balance of this HGA. I was particularly pleased to see people like Michael West in the video. We need a big push to promote independent journalism in this country, as media diversity is being lost, and the LNP is increasingly putting political and financial pressure on the ABC and SBS, whom they see as their arch enemies (must have something to do with that outmoded concept, truth). Keep up the wonderful work. It is a privilege to be able to support independent media, and a pleasure to watch your satire and informative podcasts.

Rohan Kilby

Cheers Giordano switched to AUD on Patreon thanks for the heads up 🤙

Rick Evans

Congratulations to the team! Excellent as always, and a good choice of topic. I've also done the AUD thing - I've always found that USD->AUD conversion clip annoying.

Kim Hillier

Good to see you holding hands with Michael West. I subscribe to Crikey / the atlantic but will roll over to michael west and the intercept soon. And you of course. Did you say Liberal Government? OMG. What's liberal about neoliberalism? Did you leave out the Nationalist part of the name on purpose to avoid being sued? Big tech has to pay to give free clicks to big media. Next stop search engines.....

DaC

Great work. I do believe that whilst this was pretty much 100% created by the liberal government it was signed off by other parties including labor as well. They should get a mention so that this isn't just seen as a left vs right thing which then means many that need to notice this just switch off to the message.

Mik Scheper

The Liberal party's name has always struck me as similar irony as the DPRK's. And it's fun confusing Yanks by saying republicanism is generally seen as progressive in Australia. 😉

thejuicemedia

Nice on Rick, hoping the AUD thing ends up saving everyone some money on conversions!

thejuicemedia

Yes it was indeed, good point - in retrospect, I should have mentioned that at the end in the Authorised by message

thejuicemedia

Hi Kim, no I didn't omit the Nationalist Party for legal reasons.... I just didn't think to mention it - in retrospect, I should have referenced the fact that other parties supported the legislation too! including Labor, the Greens etc

Kim Hillier

Legislation fatigue probably. Plus, who reads?
