i went into my hard drive to pull out an earlier version of today's strip, but looks like i have something saved for yesterday's strip as well! so here it is

an unused strip

which became the used strip

See, I was worried initially that, in my long, storied history of comics, that I've had too many drunken nose-boops. Or just too many nose boops in general, sober or otherwise. And so I was like, am I falling into a rut? I asked Wack'd, who has a good handle on Shit I've Done, and also I asked my wife, who is also an expert on these things, but in the meantime, I drew up this alternate version:

...wherein instead of the nose boop, Joyce momentarly loses her balance, while sitting. And it's fine! I guess. Dorothy's response doesn't really follow through anymore, but I'm skipping over a potential rut, right?

anyway both wack'd and maggie disagreed that this was a rut, and honestly neither could remember a pattern that i was remembering, and so... i went back to the original version and completed it, and we got the final strip as-it-is:

There is no such thing as "too many nose boops." It's impossible to imagine the strip without this one, especially combined with Dorothy's raised-eyebrow reaction.

Even if there was a long running pattern, the drunken nose-boop is so in-character for Joyce that it would almost make more sense to go back and remove one of the previous nose-boops (tho I only remember one other?) that'd already been published than to remove this one

I thought Walky drunkenly did one to Dina in It's Walky!, but apparently, upon trying to dig it up, he did not! But Sal definitely booped Danny's nose in Roomies!.

Twice in eleventy billion years is not a rut.

It adds to the scene's mood, I appreciate its use.

Minzoku Bokumetsu

"too many nose boops" sounds like "too many makeouts" no such thing

zaratustra

clearly we need a boop tag

I'm so glad your wife and wack'd convinced you to keep the original. "Blippity bloop" was an instant classic, and I'm not even kidding.

Dean Reilly

One boop per continuity, that's the rule!
