Jennifer can fix that for ya, Joyce

HenryVolt

Both shot her down.

Jey Siksa

Joyce, social media mogul

Andrea Andrew

Okay! A lot to take in (unlike Dorothy. Heyooh!) Joe interacting with BJ again is funny, and Joyce finding out they almost hooked up. Joyce is open to her and Jennifer having sex? Wow. Joyce finds Alice pretty. Subtle. This seems like a take that to Twitter, which had just got conservative in 2023.

Harold

@Andrea Andrew: We already know, canonically, that Joyce could crawl up into Jennifer's breasts and be safe and warm forever

Harold

LOL at Panel 2. We are getting some incredible Joyce faces in this storyline.

C

Joyce: Not yet anyways... Jennifer: ...*blinks*

Sajuuk-Khar

No wonder I didn’t remember it! It was a whole-ass “ships passing in the night” moment, energy there one second and gone the next

Andrea Andrew

I love how, now that Dorothy has come out, Joyce can also now be as openly and obviously queer as possible.

Astariel

Love Joyce's eye-take in panel 2. Also, though Joyce is a wonderful precious cinnamon roll, her plans tend to leave a lot to be desired.

“Now that I’ve given you no incentive to pursue my goals, and it’s been fully three minutes since I’ve tasked you, what action plan have you constructed to ensure my success?” I’ve worked with people like this! Jennifer may be management material.

So, there’s this song called “You Cain’t Make ‘Er Love You If She Don’t”. Apparently inspired by a stalker defendant’s heartfelt explanation to a judge of “what have you learned from this incident?” Although the love part seems taken care of, it may be more “I love you but I can also see you’re wrestling with alcoholism and toxic drama and for my own health I need to keep you at double arm’s length.” Jennifer’s “I can claw my way back to her with clinginess, if I just recruit more minions!(the Raidah and Blaine success strategy?)” is the same mentality causing the problem!

Vaguely related to this strip cuz of Joyce acknowledging that another woman is pretty I'm finally on book 13 on my read through of the whole damn collection of DoA books I got from the last kickstarter. Dorothy gives Walky (bad) advice for his relationship with Lucy. When he leaves the room, she expresses jealously and longing for him. The next fucking strip she goes to collect Joyce to teach her to masterbate. It is EVEN GAYER having just read Dorothy's conversation with Joe. Joe gets Dorothy to acknowledge her feelings for Joyce. She can't have Joyce. She goes to Walky. It's exactly the same but opposite!! Can't have Walky, go to Joyce. Can't have Joyce, to to Walky. Like, DAMN. I wish you all were rereading all of DoA cuz I love reading the discussion on Patreon. And also cuz I need everyone to realize the laundry masturbation lessons were even more queer than we initially thought

C

Honestly might do a reread of Dumbing of Age. It's been too long since my last one (waiting for that Dumbing of Age animated series, lol). Might refresh my memory for coming interactions.

Rozenn Keribin

I've been re-reading DoA, a portion thereof at least, and I think I might now believe Mike isn't dead? Is that a common theory? Like for some reason I never doubted given the tone & themes of the strip that he is dead, and I'm not sure a reveal to the contrary would be consistent with that tone tbh, but re-reading I noticed stuff I hadn't noticed or had forgotten about and that Raised Questions for me.

Andrea Andrew

I’ll bet that habit of Dorothy’s was also in full effect before the time skip. Think about it. She broke up with Walky, then spent more time with Joyce (even noting that Joyce’s Bible verse to her was used in lesbian weddings), but then Joyce developed a crush on Jacob, so she tried Walky only for him to start dating Amber. She then was critical of Joyce’s pursuit of Jacob. When Walky made a few passes, she declined. See what I mean.

T Campbell

Joyce is doing it right, actually: nobody has freakin' time to look at the whole posting history of anybody they friend, and it looks like Alice just went, "Goes to my school? Has some posts that aren't just profile updates? Sounds legit." In social media as in life, focus more on the now than on correcting all the mistakes of your past.

Harrison Fuller

It’s why David Willis’ joke about how Walkyverse!Dotty’s perfect partner was the literal love child of Joyce and Walky works so well.

Phil_M

Or don’t bother with the whole toxic swamp at all.

Phil_M

What those managers needed was underlings who were eager to please and fannish about precisely the sort of task they were being given. Joyces, in other words. Or a certain type of nerd in programming jobs. Works for El*n M*sk, after all.

Andrea Andrew

Wow. Dorothy’s feelings go that far back?

Beck Chonigman

The better question is, how does Joe remember it? He seemed very distracted in that moment.

Harold

@Andrea Andrew: That particular early instance was more about Dorothy's concern for Joyce's well-being after the roofie incident - and her unfairly blaming herself - than about any nascent romantic feelings.

Kevin Ryan

I feel that; there was a freshman when I was a senior who seemed really brilliant, really into space, dreamed of working for SpaceX. Heard she got the job when she graduated. Heard it was damn near killing her at a wedding a few years later. Don’t know where she is now, but I hope she got out.

Andrea Andrew

I know. This moment clearly had a profound effect on their relationship/friendship. They have each other’s backs.

Rozenn Keribin

Update on continued re-read: oh right that theory was addressed in-strip during the Halloween flashbacks wasn't it Hm.
