I really love the dynamic these two are falling into. Both came to College with these fairly rigid views on how the world works. The difference, I think, is that when adversity came to Joyce, she changed. Billie fought through a massive wave of depression with Ruth, who had been the person to kind of break her out of chasing popularity. As soon as Ruth breaks things off with Billie "For Real," Billie/Jennifer reverts back to chasing status, but finds no happiness in it. Also, I really enjoy Jennifer's face journey through this one. That last panel is adorable.

Of course, Joyce doesn’t know that if part 1 of her plan works, the actual consequence will be Alice deciding that she’s either misguided and in need of a warning (though she tried that once) or toxic and in need of a wide berth.

Last time Alice saw Jennifer with Joyce, she told Joyce (and Walky) that Jennifer was toxic and best avoided. But of course, that doesn’t fit Joyce’s worldview, so she’s deleted that memory. Joyce’s belief in the classic geek fallacy that friendship is transitive makes this far less clever a plan than she thinks.

I love it how even one of Jennifer's new friends questioned Jennifer's perception of her evolution as being more engaging with friends. The fact that she even rebuddled at all about Joyce's plan to actually be friends as an example shows that she really hasn't improved at her core.

Well no. You can’t force somebody to be your friend. The fact that the only people who currently want you be Jennifer’s friends are people she doesn’t actually want to be friends with (even if she does want the odd favour from them) is kind of tragic and messed up.

Joyce's previous meeting with Alice occurred on the day of the Whiteboard Dingdong Bandit, when Joyce was in terror of the consequences of being found out as said bandit. She may have been distracted.
