Before any other remark, I want to console fellow-commenters whose hearts are now broken. Joyce and Dorothy can keep the overall progress going. Their mutual devotion is not in doubt, and no person of bad intent is trying to break it. Dorothy has not yet made explicit her updated feelings about Joyce, but she won't want that to stand between them for very long. I think we'll be seeing a lot more of their shared adventure. That being said, the little narrow last frame of Dorothy peering over the edge of the bed while the lyrics say "can't let go", well, ouch. And double ouch for Joyce's interrupted reply in panel 2 never getting to the substance, even though Dorothy herself broke the tentative caresses. Joyce's eager bounding and hasty in-vest-ment in panel 3 show her undiminished excitement about Joe. The little bit of her right heel showing in panel 5 tells us that Joe has lifted her completely off the floor—while wearing his *own* sexiest sweater-vest! The pink hearts may be an artistic convention, but I think Dorothy sees them.

So, in all seriousness, I have thoughts: 1: Joyce is still very much infatuated with Joe and wants to be physically intimate with him. Check the leg lift hug. 2: Joyce knows there is something there, but also thinks foolin’ around is much more low key and common, thanks Billie. 3: Joe at the very least seems open to the idea of either stepping aside or coming to an agreement… I don’t think he would jump to full on polycule with a woman that he thinks is disgusted by him. 4: Walky is just kinda nebulously there… but is also in a soft loathe relationship with Joyce (Jealousy over Dorthy, wasn’t it?) this could get interesting.

What's really wild is that the US government back in the 70s-80s didn't know this was a euphemism or its origin and NIS (now NCIS), during an investigation on gay military members in Chicago, spent time and money trying to figure out who she was. Jorothy fans, you may not believe it right now, but...this is what you want. Had the kiss happened here, Joe still would have knocked on that door, and the moment would have been tainted beyond saving, forever associated in Joyce's mind with hurting Joe, failing him. But because it didn't happen, the idea of it is perfect and pure in Joyce's mind, something she'll continue to think about, wonder about. (There's maybe still a little potential guilt, but it's much easier to shed or suppress.) The only thing that could prevent any follow-up is if she and Joe (and Dorothy and Walky) have a drama-free relationship with no major twists after this, and, uh, THAT'S NOT THE WAY TO BET.

They're both 18. Being "confused" is not only believable, it's what's expected! Dorothy is literally less than 24 hours into realizing she's queer. And for as much as she thinks she's "enlightened" she's got a lot of rigidity built into her. It's gonna take her some time.

What I have on and off assumed ever since Billie and Sarah I think talked about Joyce pratfalling into her sexuality is we MIGHT see an agreement between Dorothy and Joe. May the best person win over Joyce’s affections until a real choice (polycule or monogamy) happens. With Walky—It’s not just jealousy over Dorothy I feel. It’s been a lot of minor things that have put him at Joyce at odds. The comic strip thing that Joyce ultimately won, or the fact that Joyce made no secret she was actively rooting against Dorothy and Walky’s relationship time and time again. Let’s not even talk about if Walky realizes that Dorothy broke up with him for Yale but has long since decided she would stay for Joyce. (Well, maybe he’ll bring it up). Everyone says Walky jokes about it but the strip where Dorothy says including Joyce to sweeten the deal on rekindling their relationship weirds Walky out a bit. It’s not a polycule he’s against but he’s got some outstanding grievance towards Joyce. That same ‘you get everything and do nothing’ Dorothy yelled at Joe about, Walky might probably feel the same towards Joyce. ESPECIALLY if one morning he sees Joe and Dorothy doing a ‘May the best person for Joyce win’ bit.

Holy damn, so many comments already. I will say I knew this would happen because I knew Joe specifically had two more appearances in this storyline and it ended in two more strips but didn't want to ruin the tension for anyone that didn't know that. It is for the best. Joyce was not planning on stopping lol thank God for Dorothy's enormous brain and ability to think clearly even in this situation.

Unrelated to the angst in the past couple of strips: I have the same fickle bongo brain that Joyce has when it comes to music. I'm roughly Willis's age, had a similar fundamentalist Christian adolescence, and basically think all the songs Joyce likes are straight-up bangers (yes, even DC Talk). Anyway, I tried out the two Paramore songs referenced in these strips, then an essentials playlist (which fortunately had a few songs I had heard before on it), and I liked all of it! And now I think I might have enough brain familiarity to try listening to the albums in order. I haven't tried new music out in years, so this was an unexpected delight. I do like how Dorothy makes the decision herself to stop what's happening while Joyce had no intention of stopping but Joe shows up anyway during this moment. I like the subversion of the cliche and retaining character agency during such a big moment. It actually interrupts whatever Joyce was going to say and I think that would've been an even bigger step than that show of intimacy and reciprocation. No takesies backsies type of declaration.

@Leon: It promises to be an eventful day/storyline: Joyce and Dorothy (and likely a lot of the other characters) will be heading to the campus protest, to support Jocelyne and check out what's going on, and I'm guessing things there might get chaotic and scary (will we see Amazi-Girl? Incelerator?). And, obviously, there's the giant bisexual hors-- um, elephant in the room that will need to be addressed (by, and to, multiple characters). Or, not addressed, but repressed as deeply as possible, which certainly won't be unhealthy for anyone! Buckle up, indeed.

Yeah, she got completely swept up in the mood and acted somewhat impulsively. Queerness being inside her all along is going to throw her for a loop. The combination of almost cheating on Joe, only being stopped by Dorothy's hesitation, and initiating the physical contact that clearly wasn't outside of romance and sexuality will weigh harder. We also got an answer on how the thread of "learning to let each other say yes" was related to this third round of Dorothy/Joyce. Joyce said yes, Dorothy denied it in more ways than one in a panic. That's another thing, considering the moves from Joyce's perspective was probably scary as hell for her to do. What's also interesting is the idea she had that masturbating would constitute as emotional cheating on Joe awhile back. She's undoubtedly moved past that, but she also said doing it with Dorothy would be the same unfaithful act. Then you have Joe maybe perceiving something about her girls night out, Round Two, with Dorothy and saying he had no right to be jealous. Joe even says he just wants her to have the things she wants, which is eerily similar to what Dorothy said to Joyce before she wordlessly conveyed she wanted her. Joe might suspect something about Joyce's feelings, too, before he confirmed Dorothy's. Now, in Round 3 of non hanky-panky shenanigans, they both almost cross a line but this will likely stay a secret for awhile. How actually on the down low (heh) Joyce is will be a running thread in the next story line.

Her reaction to the "advice" seemed mostly a reminder for the audience about Joyce's unspoken pining because of its incoming relevance and to ease into what’s happening now. Same with the contrast between her muted reaction to Jennifer’s tit pic and Dorothy’s along with wanting to see the selfies Walky got.
