Genevieve

Yay for Joe and Joyce who I hope continue to have a lovely fulfilling relationship (with a few additions)

Megh

Damn you Willis

plant.mimic

Ah. That reaction is less than ideal.

Jeremy AR

Fucking hell Willis you leaving us with that?! Absolutely evil. I couldn't be happier.

JB Robinson

i knew this would shatter my heart into a thousand pieces one way or another

Quantum

FUCK that is heartbreaking

The25th

I'm going to blow up and not in the good way.

Sajuuk-Khar

Dotty please this is a false equivalence girl come *o n* why did we leave this trauma in the hands of IU’s terrible mental health staff

Packy Anderson

Oh, Dorothy. That familiar feeling of helplessness you've got right now.

The25th

On another note I feel for Dotty. I know what it is like to someone who is very much taken.

Joey245

And I, I hate to see your heart break I hate to see your eyes get darker as they close But I've been there before...

C

*just the ugliest cry* Fucking damn, that is one painful ending...

Girlycore

Screaming, crying, throwing up. Poor Dorothy. God this has been some good fucking writing and art.

Andrea Andrew

It’s almost like Joyce regrets leaving.

Megh

So storyline ends here, but I don't think it's anywhere near midnight And Joyce mentioned before she wants the gazebo to be at the end of the date, and I believe the gazebo preview panel was for tomorrow Which I guess means we don't get to see the date even? Was kinda looking forward to it, based on the first date I would expect this one to be quite wacky, even without Mike around

Taffy

She hates to see her go, but loves to watch her leave.

wyatt

oh baby she’s being so normal about this

Crunchos cereal

Okay, Dorothy, maybe talk also to your therapist about this. Preferably before talking with Walky, Joyce and Joe.

Ria

Find me outside blasting good luck babe and smashing shit in the junkyard like that one song in high school musical 3

William Lewis

And next on the playlist, Morphine, "Cure for Pain"...

Harold

@Andrea Andrew: Not nearly as much as Dorothy regrets her leaving.

Harold

@Girlycore: Oddly enough, "screaming, crying, throwing up" are also the next three items on Dorothy's to-do list

Jey Siksa

Can anybody refresh me on what that is? Not kidnap van or hand scar ambulance

TobyTura

comparing joyce being with her boyfriend to the kidnapping is killing me girl what 😭

Taffy

Okay okay okay BUT! Hear me the fuck out, because I think I cracked this entire thing wide open. Who saved the day *last time* Dorothy watched Joyce vanishing into the distance?

Corronchilejano

Never seen a polycule driving away that fast before.

Ragtime

Sal and Amber/Amazi-girl?

MrShoggoth

You can’t have everything you want in life, Dorothy. I’m sorry you learned it this way.

Harold

@Jey Siksa: Actually, you were right the first time. Dorothy's flashing back to being unable (in her mind) to prevent Blaine from driving off with Joyce in the kidnap van. Which is a really, really dark place for her to go right now, but it's been one hell of a rollercoaster of a day for her.

Dan Rabin

A++ for excellent use of comics medium: 1. the parallel construction between Dorothy's helplessness when Blaine kidnapped Joyce and the current emotional situation, 2. the doorpost in the second borderless panel sits where a panel gap would be, which makes Dorothy's hand look like it's overlapping the edge of a panel. A++ for subtle plotting and writing: the parallel being drawn is with a time when Dorothy was helpless to protect Joyce: this was also the big theme of the latter part of the horse dream when there were too many Joyces to save. But there's only a parallel to the current situation in that both situations are depriving Dorothy of Joyce—the part about saving and protecting Joyce is absent as she walks off with Joe. Joyce is not in danger. "Can't let go" from the previous strip hits home in the matter of her desire for Joyce, but applies differently to Dorothy's inapt urge to protect Joyce. I suggest that these are different matters, and Dorothy is, as she says, confused.

Baqly

Oh my god, fuck.

Bagge

<3

Harold

@Baqly: Is that a reaction, or a command?

TobyTura

interesting emotional equivalent for someone who just talked up joe and his love and care for joyce a couple strips ago

TobyTura

She needs to stop lying to her therapist and work her shit out I fear

Dan Rabin

The date is probably Joe and Joyce being Joe and Joyce at a restaurant and then at a cinema. We can fill that part in, but we need to be *shown* Dorothy's feelings. I don't know about the timing and the role of the gazebo, though.

5099 5618 v2.0

That does seem like the right sweatervest, tho.

Fart Captor

She literally only JUST figured out she was bi. She probably hasn't even SEEN her therapist yet since then

TobyTura

I wasn't implying she had? Just that she can't go on like this anymore

Grace Serenity

I think Toby is talking about Dorothy's trauma that she obviously hasn't begun to unpack from last term.

Andrea Andrew

It’s ironic. Joe helped her realize her feelings (helping her out), and then he swoops in to take Joyce away (unaware of the pain he’s causing).

TobyTura

Correct!!! As someone who lied in therapy myself- it did not serve me at all.

TobyTura

"ON MY BIRTHDAY? ON MY FUCKING BIRTHDAY?" <- my friend's response to this storyline ending on may 6th

TobyTura

they introduced me to this comic in ye olden days of high school like 11 yrs ago. we have been in the billieruth/joejoyce mines together forever now...

Sajuuk-Khar

That makes the “confused” part hit very different and I think you hit the nail squarely cause like jealousy is one thing, compersion another, THIS is a whole different SPECIES

Sajuuk-Khar

I feel like Rational Dorothy is at war with Emotional Dorothy in a way that suggests girl needs better mental healthcare stat

Baqly

Well, the command is unnecessary, as it will happen.

Berry

Funny, today's my birthday

Sajuuk-Khar

man at this fuckin rate Joyce is gonna have her shit together and be like “poly? :3” at these two and Joe will be like “o_o aw gee am I worth it though” and Dorothy will just start screaming and weeping at a decibel level that kills dogs, herself

Dan Rabin

Different interpretation: Joe knows about the possibility of pain from his interview with Dorothy, but believes that Joyce holds all the agency cards in the situation. He didn't swoop in, but showed up on time for a date planned with Joyce's participation, with sexual activity requested by Joyce.

Jey Siksa

Gotcha, my memory is so bluh

Uniquitous

If you don't get your heart broken once or twice during college, you're doing it wrong

Waifu Purplebutt

Dorothy still views Joe as a predator, Joyce as helpless and also her love interest, and someone who's been taken from Dorothy without her being able to do anything about it, which is happening again (socio-logical/ethical reasons instead of physical ones this time)

Morgan Byrd

Shit is this comic about Dorothy crashing out now (I am here for it)

Waifu Purplebutt

I would argue that there very much is a danger aspect in Dorothy's mind, as she still views Joe as a predator preying on Joyce, as she has yet to reconcile Joe's attempts to change as genuine

Rubia

Given that she's seen bad things happen to Joyce in the past, I'm willing to give her rational mind considerable slack.

Waifu Purplebutt

Dorothy still views Joe as a predator playing the long-game

Smoochie

I’m pretty sure the polycule idea is officially in a coma.

TobyTura

I think what she said about Joe in the previous strips negates this, though. She is at least consciously aware he is not a threat to Joyce.

TobyTura

She has stated otherwise, friend.

Andrea Andrew

Will Joyce even want the sexual activity with Joe after nearly kissing Dorothy..Nevermind.

Andrea Andrew

I mean, Joyce clearly likes them both.

NinjaZaku

I feel like that connection might be catastrophizing things a bit, Dorothy. Disaster was averted for now but oh, boy I bet that won't be the case for long.

Smoochie

She does, yes. …But I feel like we keep glossing over how everyone else in a three, or foursome even feels about each other.

shiftdruid

TIME FOR THE CRASHOUT oh boy i hope we get billy back as a bookend!! it's truly Messy Dyke Hours i'm so exciteddddd

TobyTura

this!!! like yeah everyone in a poly rs doesn't have to date each other (my friends have this situation!) but they should at least be *okay* with each other.

TobyTura

also I feel the brother/sister-y relationship joe and dotty have maybe also isnt the best foundation to share a girlfriend on.

Taffy

Dorothy Margot Keener, the M in Margot stands for "murders dogs".

Taffy

It's a reaction command, press the fucking Triangle button.

Taffy

Dorothy needs a hero(in).

Taffy

There's that frivolous, luxurious word again, "health". Tut tut.

Terra Bruder

I mean, catastrophizing things a bit is pretty much what trauma is

Daniel Adams

Joe isn’t a kidnapping dad let’s not be too dramatic here, Dorothy

Shane Wegner

Polycule has evolved into Polycruel!

Shane Wegner

How can you become Hokage if you can’t even save one friend?

Shane Wegner

You’re right of course, but brains don’t always think logically especially where trauma is involved.

Shane Wegner

If you strike Joe down, Joyce’s dislike of you shall become more powerful than you can possibly imagine!

MrShoggoth

I guess my takeaway from this is that polycules just don’t work for everyone? Dorothy’s anguished because she’s just realised that Joyce might legitimately share her finally-acknowledged attraction, but that doesn’t mean she’s magically going to want to share if it became an option. Plus, look at how she’s viewing Joe just walking Joyce down a hallway - she’s already spiralling and comparing it to the kidnapping isn’t helping her mental state at all. She won’t want anything of the sort if Joe is involved to share with. And there isn’t anything indicated yet that she’s inclined to view it as an option.

Sajuuk-Khar

Dorothy Murdersdogsargot Keener

Snail

I've been wondering what, storytelling-wise, was the point of the past week of updates. More than the question of "what does X character feel about Y", why tell this story about these two characters? Why have them cosy up just moments before Joyce's highly anticipated date night the story has been building up towards for months? Where is this going? FINALLY we have an answer - so we can watch the exact moment Dorothy's heart breaks. Fantastic. Love it. Staying subscribed to the Patreon. Happy Cinco de Mayo.

Sajuuk-Khar

Seeeee I don’t believe there’s any sibling-esque or “just don’t vibe” feelings between Dorothy and Joe, though! Joyce and Walky, yes, by design, but Dorothy and Joe have beef because of previous behavior Joe is trying actively to shed, which: 1.) is the type of enmity that communication can destroy 2.) is narratively ironic because it echoes Dorothy’s own desire to shed her previous behaviors 3.) due to the above, is some foundational “enemies/rivals to lovers” type of stuff EXCEPT every time I think there’s been some communication Willis has come through with a HAHAHA YOU THOUGHT, because DAMN HIM 😫

Sajuuk-Khar

(Of course, the addendum to the above is that it is *silly* to believe that we’re as far along in this romantic dance as it feels, because in-strip not as much time has passed, not as many things have happened, these doofuses haven’t got omniscient access to context. So of course there hasn’t been A Lot of communication yet. Willis has only begun to cook, the damnation is on a professional level.)

Jeremy AR

Thanks you! It's weird that sometimes people forget that, character deelopment exist? And relationships can change?

Jeremy AR

Good thing I never eat healthily!

Jeremy AR

Because fuck your fellings that's why!

Jeremy AR

That is a strange thing to take away from this.

Harold

@Taffy: I initially read this as "Dorothy needs heroin"

Ilana Feldman

I was hoping that Joyce would "platonically" kiss Dorothy goodbye and that would be the crazy note Willis left us on, but I guess PTSD is good too.

meh

oh if it happens it'd be a joyce/dorothy level slow burn. even if its just a web of loosely overlapping relationships its still a long way off. but hear me out. how much comedy value is there in amber accidentally engineering a ploycule with her step brother? she may evil batman the thing into extistance just for the drama of it.

MrShoggoth

I’ve seen dozens of comments over the last few weeks about how Dorothy and Joyce need to form a polycule to solve their romantic issues, and it’s been in overdrive the last few strips. It’s just what was on my mind when I reread it

Baqly

i think this is more representative of her own feelings about losing joyce rather than the inherent distaste that comes from being in a polycule. This is just a trigger for her, her own feelings about joyce have always seemed a bit romantic but this is adding on so why she is so attached to her now. She is scared of losing her. She is scared of that so bad that she doesn't know what to do with herself, that's why they did laundry, thats why she stayed in the college. She can't bring herself to think of losing her, and Joe is right now taking her away immediately after she denied her advance for a kiss. I don't think this like decomfirms the whole polycule idea, which was never to be a clean solution to the whole conundrum. I just don't really think it could go another way when thinking of Joyce's feelings, she is very clearly also in love with dorothy, and Joe. She has both of these important people in her life and I imagine she wouldn't want to just choose between the both of them, thats not fair to the either of them.

Harold

Post-Tiddypic Self-Denial

Girlycore

It isn't meant to be read that literally. Dorothy is terrified of losing Joyce and is worried she won't be capable of doing what it takes to keep her. Whether that means chasing a van with Joyce inside, or playing the Good Friend so Joyce can keep being happy with Joe.

Kyle

This is so refreshing, and such a wholesome message. It's tempting, and often easy, to traumatize your characters over and over again, to introduce new plot points as you need them. Here, the author demonstrates the best kind of reduce, re-use, recycle mindset. Re-contextualizing an existing trauma with a flashback is so much more effective! The audience can feel, viscerally, the aching void where their hearts used to be! From now on, I'm doing my best to keep this in mind. It's not about what you can do to fuck up your characters, it's about fully exploring what already makes them so very fucked up. Thank you, Willis.

tifani

It’s a tiny spark that’s going to turn into a wildfire. Give it time. You just got Dorothy to realize how she feels. Joyce too. Next you have to get Joe and Walky on board and then there’s the Amber of it all. It’s not happening overnight.

tifani

All you people going ohhhh nooo the polycule is over! God some of you guys give up so easily. Couldn’t be me. Shipper hell is my home! I’ve been waiting for Danny/Ethan to kiss for over a decade and I haven’t given up yet! I can be patient. (Even if I could see Joe/Walky kissing before they do at this point). All signs point towards polycule!

Aubrey Bryn

I mean, she suggested to Walky that they do a threeway with Joyce, and while she finds Joe quite distasteful, her reticence to accept his change is reflective of her jealousy more than anything else. I also don't think she sees Joe taking Joyce away as being as bad as kidnapping, she's just remembering the fear of losing Joyce.

Leon

Bittersweet ending. Joyce made a bi pun but Dorothy is too preoccupied with trauma to have noticed it. Fr tho, the tonal shift is staggering even when considering this strip alone. So many changes to see in the next storyline.

Andrea Andrew

I don’t think anyone has pointed out the 2 way street of jealousy that may now happen. Now that she knows she likes Dorothy, Joyce’s dislike of Walky may increase.

Harold

@Andrea Andrew: What's higher than infinity?

Andrea Andrew

They were really traveling down the bi-frost.

Astariel

This is the point where, if I'm Dorothy, I go to bed and don't get out until class on Monday.

Grace Serenity

And really, Monday is a pretty big ask. I'm taking the whole week off!

Smoochie

I continue to wait for my Walky version of Dorothy’s “NEVER TRIED, NEVER SACRIFICED AND GET EVERYTHING” when Joyce gets some smug gloating in. Because Walky and Joyce’s verbal tit for tats might escalate. PLEASE GIVE ME THE WALKY CRASH OUT WILLIS! GIVE ME THIS CRASH OUT AND MY LIFE IS YOUR—I MEAN, MY WALLET IS YOURS

Sam G

@Girlycore I really like this read on it. Totally fits with what we know of Dorothy's anxieties so far

Astariel

I wouldn't blame her! I just figure that if Dorothy isn't literally dying, she's not skipping class. Like Dorothy, I built a lot of my self-image on being a Very Diligent Student, so when I got my heart broken freshman year, I still went to class. It was at least a distraction, if nothing else. (Of course, the object of my heartbreak wasn't in any of my classes.)

Gale Tazzin

is this the first time a storyline has ended in a blue panel? not even This Was Halloween did that

Alexandra Falk

And we say, as of old: Damn you, Willis.
