Talk about a freudian slip

Minzoku Bokumetsu

"there's a version of me that didn't put her foot in her mouth"

Smoochie

And finally. Finally, we address ONE of the many sweater-vest wearing elephants in the room.

Harrison Fuller

There’s also a version of me that’s dating you and Walky’s first born. …It’s not as weird as it sounds.

P J Upton

Stirring politics into this burgeoning gay pairing… It’s so much tastier than I ever dared to dream!

Buck Caldwell

Your Freudian slip is showing, Dorothy.

C

"No wait, I mean, a version of me that's never had a surprise sudden desire to motorboat-WAIT, NO, FUCK!" *Dorothy proceeds to spend thirty minutes slipping into a Joyce-induced mess*

The25th

Also Dorothy’s face is just hilarious

Fart Captor

"Yes but in a very platonic, heterosexual way"

C.T. Phipps

There's a version of Willis who never became a cartoonist and artistic pornographer? Say it aint so!

Omnithea

The lizard brain thing is a brave thing to admit.

Railway Series Book Club

joyce detected a singular crumb of dorothy's Barely-Concealed Atomic Pining and instantly zeroed in it

Dan Rabin

Look at how Dorothy and Joyce in the two borderless panels are in similar poses with similar expressions. The two characters are looking around in different directions in the scene-setting first panel. We don't see exactly when Joyce turns to look at Dorothy, but Dorothy turns towards Joyce in panel 3, when her self-analysis dialogue moves from her long-time attitude to her crediting Joyce as catalyst of her change. Dorothy quickly moves back to talking about her old self, but Joyce quickly picks up on what Dorothy just said, and throws it back as a question. Oh, and although it's not mentioned in this strip, Joyce has used violence in the service of justice. So has Amazi-Girl. Where has the nominally non-violent Dorothy directed her admiration?

Sajuuk-Khar

“There’s a version of me that successfully beat Walky to death after getting mind controlled by Dexter the Alien, even!” “Ooh! Tell me more!”

Harold

Dumbing of Age, Book 15: I-- I Mean, Uh-- Well--

Harold

@Dan Rabin: Hey, Dorothy can be violent when she wants to be. That imaginary chair in her room is still recovering from the vigorous kicking that she gave it.

Railway Series Book Club

ok well TECHNICALLY they aren't dating, their kid just has a crush on her, which probably won't get followed up on unless willis decides to exhume the walkyverse's corpse (which would be a great thing if it were to happen, IMO. 50-something MILF Joyce would make the world a better place)

Andrea Andrew

Peace and Justice. Two things hard to find in this day and age. Love the sapphic slip up.

Andrea Andrew

I wonder if Joyce is gonna be motivated to go to Yale to make sure Dorothy doesn’t give up her education.

Rubia

Not gonna lie, there's a part of me that wants someone from the Walkyverse - other than Head Alien and maybe a few others, but yeeeaaahhh - just to see them boggle at how things are occurring here. Not that I think Willis will do this, but my brain wants what it wants.

Leon

This being revealed accidentally is great. I was initially wondering how Joyce would interpret this information before the recent development, but now it's probably not much of a mystery. I see the pretense of their initial arrangement slowly eroding and this getting really serious, so perhaps the topic of Dorothy's reoccurring nightmares come up to put the nail in the coffin. How it all ends up is a toss up, though.

Andrea Andrew

“There’s a universe where we both fought for Walky.” “Yuck.” “And…even there, I actually wanted you.”

Corronchilejano

"I was out of the room when you orgasmed!"

KaylaZX

I AM GNAWING AT THE BARS OF MY ENCLOSURE. NORMAL ABOUT THEM

Joe360

@Andrea Andrew: And sometime a choice must be made between the two: either pursuing justice and continue a endless cycle of violence and more injustices; or pursuing peace for hopefuly a better future, but leaving injustices unanswered and potentialy poisoning the future. Though it's not the situation the United States are in right now.

HenryVolt

Well that version of her might be getting railed by Walky and Joyce's time traveling love child right now so she's getting the best of both world.

5099 5618 v2.0

Now that is a hard sell. A is still A, after all.

5099 5618 v2.0

I have to keep reminding myself (since Billie brought it up) that they have not been paired off with others for even a full week of proper time, yet.

C.T. Phipps

I'm shocked that Dorothy is against protesting. I really thought she would want to be down here with the others working against the Bulmerian genocide. It would be the start of her political career actually mattering.

Mariah

not me dorothy has alway come across as a liberal that is very limited in terms of actual activism besides she doesn't say she is against protesting just protesting in a way that cause violence.

shiftdruid

I'm certain we get to fully unpack that and the girls aren't about to be interrupted by something incredibly dramatic

Jeremy AR

Oh she did not mean to say that.

Jeremy AR

No she said protest in a way that "Rock the boat" so that not actually disruptive in any way.

Maybeeus

It took a few more swings but she finally extracted those Dorothy secrets.

Kelly (they-them)

Wouldn't Joyce only be in her 40s? She was one of the original Roomies! characters and they're mostly the same age as Willis

Kelly (they-them)

Rubia, might I suggest some good ol' fanart or fanfiction?

Kelly (they-them)

Imagine Jocelyn overhearing that part of the conversation and scootching away so she can eavesdrop without them noticing -- I mean, so she can give them their privacy

Andrew

Thank cheese he was able to use his powers for good!

TobyTura

"I just want everyone to play nice and be polite. No rocking the boat. I want peace. I don't want justice." is such a perfect encapsulation of her political brand that has always, always irritated me to death. The white womanisms of it all.

TobyTura

She reminds me so much of my mom oh my god. Like the brand of liberal who hates trump but doesn't actually aspire towards change, but rather just keeping the comfortable status quo for themselves specifically. "police killing civilians is wrong but so is protesters causing a fuss and looting/fighting/etc!" type of rhetoric

HenryVolt

To be fair Joyce you're technically also the reason she got Accepted into Yale to begin with but let's not focus on that part.

Packy Anderson

For a moment I thought you wrote "autistic pornographer", and I realized it would have fit just as well.

Packy Anderson

@QueenOfSodor: walkyverse's SOGGY corpse.

Andrea Andrew

So the type of liberal who would remain closeted and has cop vibes. Here’s hoping this storyline snaps her out of these bad habits.

Terra Bruder

I always think back to MLK speaking of positive and negative peace, where negative peace is the absence of conflict and positive peace is the presence of justice. Be gay, do justice

C.T. Phipps

King would also describe Dorothy as talking about the "White Moderate" who was worse than overt racists because the latter would at least be honest to you. The former would constantly say you were going too far and throw obstacles in your way. Not because they disagreed with you but because the fight was making their lives uncomfortable. Dorothy is going to grow into a radical heroine, though, and a far better President than she would have been trying to reach across the aisle.

TobyTura

theres an out white lesbian cop at my job so no not necessarily. queerness doesn't just cure white ignorance and upper class complacency/general bad politics. many many many queer people (largely white queers in my experience but w/e) buy very hard into respectability politics and are tepid when it comes to anything that causes friction

NinjaZaku

Oh that one did psychic damage. RIP Dorothy

Rob McBobson

"Autistic pornographer" sounds like the name of an obscure anime.

Bagge

Joyce is scarily perceptive at times.

Smoochie

Wait. Was this a Twilight reference?

Sajuuk-Khar

No, that’s what really happened in the Walkyverse lmao

Sajuuk-Khar

I would say the fact that Dorothy is conscious of, and highly critical of, this part of herself is what suggests she can and will move past it. She’s not saying this because she’s proud of herself, she’s saying this because she had an epiphany about what she was striving for.

Sajuuk-Khar

Dorothy isn’t against protesting??? She’s having an epiphany about her old self and her old goals, the limits of being a milquetoast centrist liberal. She’s realizing that she WAS, in fact, a milquetoast centrist liberal, and that she’s got to do better No matter whomst she ends up kissing (it will be Joe and Joyce both as determined by the prophecy forever and ever amen etc) this is a really good development

Edwin I Callahan

Yeah, the plot lines got pretty complicated. How many versions of Head Alien were we up to at the end.?

Edwin I Callahan

Right now, we have Godzilla on a rampage but we’re supposed to accept he’s the President.

Jasmijn Wellner

Yes, she didn't go to Yale because she's in gay love with you, Joyce! Get with the program!

Harold

To be specific (Walkyverse SPOILER ALERT): Dorothy chose to go Back! To The Future! with the FutureKids, as she felt there was nothing keeping her in the present. Joyce and Walky asked their FutureKid to keep an eye on Dorothy in case her Head Alien reprogramming kicked back in, and he agreed with a nervous enthusiasm that strongly indicated he would do more than just keep an eye on her.

tifani

Yeah I’m sensing some positive growth coming her way. Some of that mythical change Rachel’s so skeptical about.

Railway Series Book Club

@Kelly (they-them): Machete and iw!Dorothy are supposed to be traveling back to 2029, iirc? I'm pretty sure iw!Joyce would be 50 that year.

Beck Chonigman

Institutions are only as violable/inviolable as the many people who work within them and whether they choose to uphold it or not, Dorothy. The people outside those institutions and the tool of protesting are vital to keeping those institutions balanced and properly functioning.

zee

There's a version of me that was an ultra lib, Joyce. A version of me that was a Mamdani fearing Democrat.

zee

Shes not really against protesting. She's saying here she knows it's a good thing and that she has a shitlib kneejerk reaction against it that she's trying to work away from. And that's pretty much what I expected out of dotty. A shitlib with a heart of gold

Andrea Andrew

This is why I prefer Dumbing of Age to previous continuities. It’s more than an ultimate style reboot.

P J Upton

It’s so crazy to read that Laundry was *last week*, yeah!!!

5099 5618 v2.0

As a model of how time feels in one's freshman year, it's pretty spot-on, tho.

5099 5618 v2.0

Epiphanies are notoriously unpleasant things, usually. Flannery O'Connor's work implies that receiving them can be the beginning of redemption, but that ignoring them comes with serious/deadly consequences. As do several episodes of Bojack Horseman, now that I think about it...

Grace Serenity

Dorothy was hit with "the gay". It's super effective!

Grace Serenity

Somehow, she manifests a bag of popcorn ala Thriller

Mojotron

Hey…wait a minute… isn’t this the alley where Dorothy decided she wanted to have sex with Walky?

TobyTura

and i would agree with that, i'm just reflecting on her character as a whole up to this point. because she is using present tense- she still feels this way- but is maybe realizing it's not something she should hold onto anymore.

David M Willis

The giant plowed snow hill Walky likes to stand on top of is just south of McNutt, which is quite a walk from Dunn Meadow.

Jeremy AR

A liberal! *Cross myself*

David M Willis

(in real life there's a parking lot where that snow hill is)

Dan Rabin

It doesn't even have to "end up"—it could go around and around for years, both enriching and bedeviling their friendship, maybe even coming and going as their lives progress.

Dan Rabin

One can get a fine education at Indiana University—I know people who have done it. The prestige places have weighty names, but things one has done often outweigh where one sat for lectures and exams.

Leon

I meant the end of this storyline lol

Rubia

@ Kelly (they-them) Not sure if you're suggesting I try other people's stuff, or if I should work on creating some myself? If it's the former, I don't dip my toes in the fanfiction pool often; my attitude is split between holding fanfic to a very high standard, and there being so many other things that pull at my interests. If it's the second, I have pretty severe avoidance issues. There are fics I've wanted to write dating back to the 90s, but I've never been able to push myself to do it. It's not fair of me not to give other people's stuff a chance, though. Is there anything out there you'd recommend?

Alexandra Falk

Dorothy is truly relatable. It's like looking just a little into the past. A decade or so is not very long ago.

Maude Reads Things

It's okay to want peace, but it's important to know it can be distinct from wanting justice. I'd rather we didn't have to keep protesting this shit too. I want both dammit. Institutions aren't inviolable but they're also how things get done. Any new system is going to have institutions too, they'll just be different ones. I still hope she changes her mind and goes to Yale next year (next year is never coming so it's irrelevant) but it'll be a new Dorothy hopefully with a clearer vision and ready to learn how to make at least some of those visions happen.

Mojotron

Oh actually I meant way back in book 4 after they chased Amazi-Girl
